TOKYO — Draymond Green is taking a swing at owning a team, but it’s not for a sport one would expect. Green joined forces with LeBron James and Kevin Love to invest in a new professional pickleball team. The trio joined LRMR Ventures in buying a Major League Pickleball team, the league announced Wednesday. It’s unclear when the team will be up-and-running and where it will be located. MLP currently has 12 four-person teams, with Green’s future team being a part of an expansion to 16 teams next year. “To see that there was an opportunity to be a part of an ownership group for such a fast growing sport, to be a part of an ownership group and to help continue to push that sport forward, it’s great,” Green said Thursday before Warriors practice, “and I’m excited about it.” Pickleball, often described as a combination of tennis, ping-pong and badminton, has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. in recent years. A 2022 study by The Sports & Fitness Industry Association found that more than 4.8 million...

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports Love them or hate them, the Golden State Warriors are going to be much-watch basketball this season as they try to defend their title. These are not the same old Warriors. Yes, we’ve seen them come off a championship run before and yes, the heart of this team is still Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Steph Curry. But there is a budding youth movement on this team and several new faces with JaMychal Green and Donte DiVincenzo replacing Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II. Whether you’re rooting for them or against them, they play one of the most exciting brands of basketball and offer plenty of reasons to get excited for the 2022-23 season.3. Andrew Wiggins and Jordan PooleWiggins and Poole were the breakout stars of the Warriors championship season and there’s every reason to think they’re just getting started. The Jets will honor three former players throughout this season by adding them to the team’s Ring of Honor. Nick Mangold, who was the glue of Gang Green’s offensive line for 11 seasons, will be the first player honored. Mangold, who played for the Jets from 2006 until 2016, will officially be the 19th person to enter the team’s Ring of Honor at halftime of Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (Oct. 30 against the Patriots) and cornerback Darrelle Revis (Nov. 27 against the Bears) will also be added later this season. Mangold said he learned about the honor during the spring, but it didn’t hit home for him until the Jets’ recent kickoff luncheon. “It’s been a process until now of really coming to grips of what it means to the family,” Mangold said at a press conference Wednesday. “It’s really special and I’m really excited about it. “There’s emotion in it as there’s a lot of people I want to mention and it is a little tricky leaving those in and out. Maybe the ghost of the Babe was watching over them Tuesday night. Aaron Judge led off the bottom of the ninth inning of what looked like a blowout loss to the Pirates with a 430-foot shot to left-center field for his 60th home run of the season. Judge tied Babe Ruth’s 1927 home run record and sparked a four-run rally that was capped with Giancarlo Stanton’s walk-off home run for a 9-8 win over the Pirates at Yankee Stadium. Judge is one shy of the American League record set by Roger Maris in 1961, with Maris’ family in attendance at the Stadium to see him challenge his record. With the 430-foot shot off of Pirates’ right-hander Will Crowe, Judge became just the sixth player in Major League history (ninth time) to hit at least 60 home runs in a single season, tying Babe Ruth’s long-standing 1927 record of 60. Judge is now tied for the second most homers in Yankees’ history. He is one shy of the team and American League record set by Roger Maris in 1961. Only Maris,...
Seven weeks after they traded for him, center fielder Harrison Bader made his Yankee debut in the Bronx on Tuesday. The Bombers traded lefty Jordan Montgomery for Bader, even though Bader had not played since June because of plantar fasciitis. The New York native was excited to put the injury and rehab in the past and get going against the Pirates at Yankee Stadium. “I’m excited to get on anything. I’m excited to put on any big league uniform and I’m excited to go out there and compete at the major (league) level,” Bader said. “So it’s definitely some special history for me here, I was in the stands here when I was younger. “But, again, at the end of the day, we got to be effective,” Bader said. “We got a baseball game to win so I’m just gonna focus on taking clean routes to the ball and go out there and just hit my first cut off man.” Bader, who grew up in Bronxville and went to the private school Horace Mann, was a career .246/.320/.409 hitter in...

Getty Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams. After Week 1 of the NFL season, it’s clear that Davante Adams‘ greatness wasn’t solely due to Aaron Rodgers. The five-time Pro Bowler had 10 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. He was unguardable and should be in for a massive year with the Las Vegas Raiders. Though the team lost to the Los Angeles Chargers, Adams proved his worth. He’ll have a chance to replicate his success in Week 2 against a weaker Arizona Cardinals defense and hopefully come out with a win. The team plays a lot of man coverage which could make things interesting for Adams. He was asked about the style of defense Arizona plays and he put their defensive backs on notice. “Anytime I get man coverage, I’m excited about that. So yeah, I hope they do that as much as possible,” Adams said Wednesday. Those are some confident words from the wide receiver and he’ll likely back them up. It’s going to be a long day for the Cardinals’ defensive backs on Sunday.Adams Talks...

Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports A disappointing season for the Lakers was followed by a quiet offseason filled with trade rumors that didn’t pan out. But they still have plenty to be excited about. Expectations were sky-high after the addition of Russell Westbrook but nothing really worked out the way the 2021-22 Lakers were hoping. Westbrook struggled and never seemed to be on the same page with his teammates or head coach Frank Vogel. Injuries were a constant issue and the team finished below .500 and missed the playoffs entirely. After a chaotic offseason for the league as a whole, Westbrook is still on the roster and potential trades for Myles Turner, Buddy Hield and Kyrie Irving never materialized. It may seem the Lakers are rolling into next season facing the same problems they couldn’t solve last season but there are plenty of reasons for optimism and they will still be one of the most...
Getty Lakers guard Russell Westbrook There are a lot of storylines heading into the 2023 NBA season, but none of them compare to the attention the Brooklyn Nets will receive. After being uncertain about their stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving remaining in Brooklyn during the offseason, the Nets are set to debut their All-Star trifecta of Irving, Durant, and Ben Simmons. And even with a roster that is already star-studded, Brooklyn could be in the market to add another All-Star. Getty One teammate called Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts the "best in the league" at extending plays. The Philadelphia Eagles upgraded their offense in significant ways during the offseason, and now just days away from finally playing a game that matters, there’s a palpable excitement around a unit that feels like it can be special. Last year the Eagles ranked 12th in points per game (26.1) and 14th in total yards per game, with just under 360 yards of offense, according to the NFL’s Game Stats and Information System. They were 25th in passing yards per game, with 200 yards through the air. They’ll expect all those numbers to improve as quarterback Jalen Hurts enters his second season as starter, and enjoys the benefit of having added wide receiver A.J. Brown. “I think it’s going to be tough for defenses,” tight end Dallas Goedert told the media on September 7, speaking of the addition of Brown alongside DeVonta Smith. “Smitty and AJ are two tremendous football players, both in their own ways, they both bring a lot of different...

Getty Patrick Beverley, Los Angeles Lakers As the start of the new season continues to draw near, there is mounting concern regarding the Los Angeles Lakers‘ current guard rotation – especially their limited three-point shooting ability. Neither Russell Westbrook nor Patrick Beverley is known for their ability to light things up from deep, and given the number of interior players within the Lakers rotation, the lack of shooting projects to be a problem. LOS ANGELES — Speculating last week about possible September call-ups, one name quickly came to mind for Giants manager Gabe Kapler. Speaking Monday before the Giants’ series-opening win here over the Dodgers about giving players “runway” to uncover their “treasure chest,” that same name dominated the conversation. It was 26-year-old infielder David Villar. “We want to see as much of David as possible,” Kapler said of the Giants’ September plans. It didn’t take long for Villar to show why, slugging one of the Giants’ five home runs Monday night in a 7-4 win over the Dodgers in a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. However, the homer was only Villar’s second in 72 at-bats between two call-ups with the Giants this season, after hitting one every 11 at-bats at Triple-A. “It was good to connect, whether it was a home run to left or right,” Villar said afterward. “Just knowing that I was on time and put a good swing on a pitch, it was a feeling I haven’t had in a while.” Plucked out of South Florida as one of...

Stanford is turning to a familiar name and number to try to help turn around a running game that has gone from one of the best in the country to one of the worst over the past five years. Emmitt James Smith IV, who goes by E.J., will be the starting running back when the Cardinal opens its season Saturday at home against Colgate (5 p.m., Pac-12 Network). While Smith shares the same No. 22 uniform number as his Hall of Fame father, the junior is also forging his own path. For one, he chose Stanford over Florida — dad’s alma mater— and Texas A&M. E.J. was drawn to The Farm after seeing what Christian McCaffrey and Bryce Love accomplished with the Cardinal. “Christian and Bryce are the main reasons I came here,” Smith said. “Being able to see how dynamic they were in this offense just helped me understand how they can use me once I got on campus.” McCaffrey and Love both finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting when Smith, 20,  was a teenager. But Stanford’s running...

A young Aussie has recalled the gut-wrenching moment she realised she only had '10 seconds left to live' during a freak skydiving accident.  Emma Carey, now 29, almost died in 2013 when her parachute tangled and then strangled her skydiving instructor, causing them to fall 14,000ft out of the sky.  It was only the fifth day of her three-month-long overseas adventure when she decided to skydive in Switzerland alongside her best friend Jemma Mrdak. The adrenalin junkie realised something was seriously wrong when she spotted her parachute flapping in front of her, rather than in the air above.  Emma Carey, now 29, almost died in 2013 when her parachute tangled and then strangled her skydiving instructor, causing them to fall 14,000ft out of the sky It was only the fifth day of her three-month-long overseas adventure when she decided to skydive in Switzerland alongside her best friend Jemma Mrdak When her instructor finally deployed their parachute it had became tangled with the strings of the safety chute and choked him, causing him to pass out.  'I remember thinking, 'oh my god,...
(CNN)In order to take the next giant leap for mankind and put a person on Mars, NASA first wants to go back to the moon, 50 years after the last Apollo mission. A spectacular baby step comes Monday with, weather and mechanical issues permitting, the Artemis I mission, as the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Rockets blasting off for space might seem relatively routine at a time when companies and countries are crowding the atmosphere and the wealthy can buy a ticket on a rocket to the International Space Station. But the uncrewed Artemis I mission is a flashback to the inspiring space program of yore, when space captured national attention and exploring it was a critical mission.CNN will have live coverage starting this weekend and through the launch Monday. IT’S been almost ten years since GTA 5 launched and it’s still one of the best-selling games, week in, week out. That’s because nobody does it like Rockstar.  I hoped that the launch of Saints Row would tide me over until the next Rockstar game. After all, it’s another open-world crime game where you steal cars, fire guns, and roam around a virtual recreation of an American state.  1Credit: Deep Silver But Saints Row isn’t GTA. To be fair to the developers, they don’t have anywhere near the number of resources Rockstar has. It’s an unfair comparison, but it’s the one that regular players will come at the game with due to the genre.  Because the developer was working with fewer resources, that means the licensed soundtrack is a bit of a dud, the animations are nowhere near as intricate, and the world doesn’t feel like a simulated place. It doesn’t even rain in Santa Ileso.  Fire up GTA V and you’re met with an iconic soundtrack filled with bangers, lifelike animations, and a world filled with NPCs who go...
Deion Sanders has made it publicly clear that he is not a fan of the NIL and offered a strong opinion behind it.  Deion Sanders is as real as it gets. He will tell it like it is, regardless of what the topic is. As you can imagine, the NIL is not off-limits. On Wednesday, Sanders appeared on SportsCenter and offered his opinion on the latest trend in college sports. The Jackson State Head Coach is not a fan. [email protected] weighed in on NIL on SportsCenter ???? "I want these kids to start back focusing on the NFL not the NIL. … The NFL is whats going to sustain you and maintain you, not the NIL." pic.twitter.com/b3PowBT0rl — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) August 24, 2022 In some ways, Sanders is incorrect. Given how rule changes have allowed college athletes to be paid for their work, it is essential that they benefit from it from a financial perspective. Also, there is a flip side where Sanders is spot on. There is a more significant opportunity in the NFL for these players,...
The summer movie season proved skeptics wrong. Turns out folks did want to go back to theaters after all, especially to see blockbusters. Although the U.S. box office totals lagged behind summer 2019 numbers, there were enough huge hits — “Top Gun: Maverick” ($663 million), “Jurassic World: Dominion” ($372 million), “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($411 million) — to suggest that people will venture out to see sequels and superhero movies. But will the trend continue this fall, when the meatier releases leading up to holiday/awards season land in cineplexes? If not, it won’t be because Hollywood didn’t give it a good shot. Cinephiles this fall are are in for juicy treats, with the arrival of Steven Spielberg’s most personal film yet — “The Fabelmans” — as well as two intriguing Harry Styles dramas, numerous period pieces and mysteries, a look at the two New York Times journalists uncovering the evil that Hollywood men can do and ushering in the #MeToo era, and a sequel to East Bay native Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther.” In all, it’s quite a...
The Portsmouth Public Library continues to serve patrons in a variety of ways, not just through brick-and-mortar locations, but in satellite locations and delivery services. Some of these services are revamping or improving and the organization wants the community aware of services they offer that may not be known about. One service being grown and pushed further is the home delivery service, where people in the community sign up for a special card that allows them to receive books without leaving home. It is designed for people with health or mobility issues. “It is great with home delivery,” Portsmouth Public Library’s Marketing Manager Katie Williams said. “A patron signs up for the program and they then actually meet with library staff, whether it is in person or by telephone, and they go over what format of items they would like. They’re also going to see what genre of library items they may want to pull from. They make a connection with patrons and ensure they get the right products into their hands.” While the meeting sets up the relationship between...
HARRY KANE feels in a “great place” at Tottenham after celebrating ten years since his Premier League debut. It was a decade ago on Thursday that the then teenager, sporting the No37 shirt, came off the bench for the final four minutes of Spurs’ 2-1 defeat at Newcastle. 1Harry Kane is celebrating ten years of playing in the Premier LeagueCredit: GETTY What followed has been one of the greatest careers in modern top-flight history, with Kane smashing in 184 goals in just 281 games. He has won the Premier League golden boot award no fewer than three times and has Alan Shearer’s all-time record haul of 260 goals in his sights. But for all the personal accolades, a trophy still eludes the England captain, which was a major factor in his agitating for a move to Manchester City last summer. Yet he now seems content at Spurs playing under Antonio Conte, with a possibility of a new contract in the offing. As Mackensie Alexander absorbed the South Florida heat and humidity for a third training camp practice with the Miami Dolphins this week, he was reminded on Thursday of the hard work he had to endure both working with his parents in his youth and as a high school football standout in Immokalee in similar conditions. Alexander and his twin brother, Mackenro, gathered everything from oranges to tomatoes on the fields of the rural Florida town just southeast of Fort Myers for his working-class parents, who were Haitian immigrants. It was commonplace for Alexander to have to wake up at 4 or 5 a.m. to spend the morning on the fields before getting ready for school. It motivated him to see football as a way out of that lifestyle, and he made the most of his opportunities at Immokalee High, becoming a five-star recruit that played for Clemson and eventually became a second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2016 NFL draft. Spending five of his six seasons with the Vikings and 2020 with the Cincinnati Bengals, Alexander was available...
