NASA is keeping a watchful eye on an asteroid that will make a close pass of Earth tomorrow. The space rock 2022 RM4 is up to 2427 feet long, making it almost twice the size of the Empire State Building. 1A huge asteroid will safely fly past Earth tomorrow in a 'close approach'Credit: Alamy Luckily, it's expected to scorch past at a safe distance and poses no threat to our planet. The asteroid has been added to Nasa's "Close Approaches" database, which tracks thousands of so-called near-Earth objects (NEOs). According to Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the rock is travelling at 52,500 mph (84,500 km/h) – 25 times faster than a bullet. It'll zip within about 1.4million miles (2.3million kilometres) of Earth – a stone's throw in space terms. Read more about spaceA-MARS-ING! It's a question that has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years – how exactly did our moon form? Since the 1970s, astronomers have suspected that the moon was created when a giant protoplanet called Theia struck Earth. However, the nature of this collision and what happened immediately after has been subject to debate. Some scientists believe that the collision created a vast cloud of debris, which coalesced into the moon over time. However, in a new study, researchers from the University of Durham claim that the giant impact immediately placed the moon into orbit around Earth. Vincent Eke, co-author of the study, said: 'This formation route could help explain the similarity in isotopic composition between the lunar rocks returned by the Apollo astronauts and Earth's mantle. 'There may also be observable consequences for the thickness of the lunar crust, which would allow us to pin down further the type of collision that took place.' In a new study, researchers from the University of Durham claim that the giant impact immediately placed the moon into orbit around Earth (artist's impression pictured)...
After officially escaping a concussion on Sunday in Miami, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a different outcome in Cincinnati on Thursday, where he was diagnosed with a head injury following a medical evaluation process that is suddenly at the center of a growing controversy for the NFL. Tagovailoa was cleared to return Sunday, despite stumbling to the ground and continuing to struggle even after getting back on his feet. Teammates needed to help keep the 24-year-old Hawaiian upright before he was removed from the game moments before halftime. But as both he and the team later claimed, Tagovailoa was not suffering from a head injury, but rather, an aggravated and existing back problem. And his play certainly supported that assertion, as he returned in the second half to lead an upset win over the visiting Buffalo Bills. Afterwards, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins both said he was cleared by doctors, who had examined him for concussion symptoms.  Critics weren't buying it.   'If Tua takes the field tonight, it's a massive step back for #concussion care in the NFL,' Chris Nowinski, a...
The NFL has vowed to learn from the concussion controversy surrounding Tua Tagovailoa after the Miami Dolphins quarterback suffered a sickening head injury just days on from another worrying collision that left him stumbling down the field. One prominent campaigner called for job losses and even jail time for Dolphins staff after Tagovailoa was hospitalized following the incident in Thursday's defeat by the Cincinnati Bengals. The quarterback was hurled to the turf in the first half and remained down for more than seven minutes. On Sunday, against the Buffalo Bills, the 24-year-old was seen shaking his head and stumbling to the floor, before returning to play shortly after. The quarterback was officially diagnosed with a back problem but a review is ongoing to determine whether the league's concussion protocol was properly followed. Earth is not yet staring down a doomsday asteroid scenario like the one in Armageddon, but scientists are taking steps to ensure the planet is prepared. On Monday, NASA will conduct an end-of-the-world prevention experiment by flying a spacecraft named DART head-on into an asteroid at a breathtaking 14,000 mph to bump the giant space rock out of its current trajectory in a bid to see if such a strategy can safeguard humans from meeting the same fate as the dinosaurs. WEBB TELESCOPE CAPTURES PHOTOS OF NEPTUNE RINGS WITH NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN CLARITY “This really is about asteroid deflection, not disruption,” Nancy Chabot, a planetary scientist involved in the effort, said, per the Associated Press. “This isn’t going to blow up the asteroid. It isn’t going to put it into lots of pieces.” The asteroid getting slammed by DART is Dimorphos, which is barreling through space roughly 7 million miles away from Earth. Dimorphos presents no Armageddon-style threat to Earth, and scientists are confident that altering its trajectory won't set it on a collision course with the planet....
Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson is reportedly already at home recovering after walking out hospital Monday night following a sickening collision. Jackson's head and neck bent back in a scary collision with a teammate during the Bills' 41-7 victory over Tennessee Titans.   But he had already arrived home Tuesday after being released from hospital, even walking out himself, according to Mike Garafolo.  Speaking on the NFL Network, Garafolo said: 'Dane Jackson I am told, already home. He has been released from the hospital. In fact, he walked out of the hospital. And all indications are that he has avoided a major injury.  'Sean McDermott will speak to the media later this afternoon but that update I just received, excellent, excellent news for Dane Jackson.' The Bills confirmed Jackson had been released from hospital in a statement on Tuesday morning.  Buffalo tweeted: 'Dane Jackson was transported last night to ECMC and underwent various tests which determined there was no major injury to his neck or spinal cord.  'He was released from the hospital and is undergoing further evaluation.' SANTA CLARA — The Niners want to play bully ball this season. The Niners running backs are big — all three that will suit up for Sunday’s Week 2 game against the Seahawks weigh more than 215 pounds. Their tight ends pack a punch — especially when George Kittle is in the lineup. It’s demanded that Niners wide receivers are committed blockers in the run game. They’re also runners of the football. And this season, they have a quarterback, Trey Lance, who can bulldoze over defenders at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds. “There’s certainly been an evolution in us as an organization and what we covet,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said earlier this month. “You grab a player like a Deebo Samuel, and you see the physicality that just wears on people. “It’s not all about scheme. At some point, you got to impose your will on people.” But how does head coach and offensive play-caller Kyle Shanahan balance that imposition with the need to keep the team’s top players — specifically Samuel and Lance — healthy and available for the...
Although Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the United States’ last eight presidential elections, the U.S. Supreme Court certainly doesn’t reflect that. Six of the High Court’s nine justices were appointed by Republican presidents, and three of those six were appointed by one-term former President Donald Trump — who lost the popular vote in 2016 and lost both the popular vote and the electoral vote in 2020. Moreover, the Court’s socially conservative supermajority is way to the right of such GOP-appointed justices of the past as Sandra Day O’Connor and libertarian Anthony Kennedy. It was this socially conservative majority that, on June 24, 2022, overturned Roe v. Wade after 49 years with its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. And journalist Cristian Farias, in an article published by Vanity Fair on August 25, warns that the worst may be yet to come from the High Court’s radical-right supermajority. “Power,” Farias writes, is the “only sensible explanation for the “present course” of a Supreme Court that overturned a decision that was not only handed down in...

(CNN)Before there was "fake news," there was "lamestream media." The phrase, popularized by Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin during the 2008 campaign, became part of her brand: folksy and snarling, the perfect combination for her media-savvy grievance politics. Nicole HemmerPalin's eventual political decline gave way to former President Donald Trump's rise. Taken together, their careers have been mirror images: he went from reality television to Fox News to the campaign trail; she went from the 2008 Republican presidential ticket to Fox News to "Sarah Palin's Alaska" and "The Masked Singer." For years, it seemed as though she had -- with her exaggerated persona, populist message and shots taken against the media -- built a bridge toward Trumpism, one she herself, as an increasingly obscure figure, was then not invited to cross. But in Tuesday night's Alaskan primary elections, the state's former governor attempted a two-part comeback. Her name appeared on the ballot twice, as a candidate in a special election for an open House seat, to finish out this session, and as a primary candidate for that same seat in...

Here's everything you need to know. 1A rocket crashed into the moon on March 4th 2022Credit: Getty What happened to the moon on March 4th, 2022? A rocket part collided with the moon on this date at around 7:25am ET as predictions came true. A new crater was seen on the surface of the moon thanks to the collision. The crash wasn’t visible to humans, but the “rogue rocket” is said to have created a plume of dust that may have lingered “for hours”. It was suggested the rocket could belong to China’s Chang’e 5-T1 mission, which was launched in late 2014. However, The U.S. Space Command later confirmed that the Chinese rocket body “never de-orbited”. They said: “We cannot confirm the country of origin of the rocket body that may impact the moon." For the first time, astronomers may have spotted the afterglow from an epic cosmic event known as a 'kilonova'. Kilonovas are immense explosions caused by neutron stars colliding into each other, sending an intense jet of of high-energy particles through space.  They produce a luminous flash of radioactive light that produces large quantities of important elements like silver, gold, platinum and uranium.  Researchers think they've detected an 'afterglow' from a 2017 kilonova event, in the form of X-rays captured by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.  In this artist's representation, the merger of two neutron stars to form a black hole (hidden within bright bulge at center of image) generates opposing, high-energy jets of material (blue) that heat up material around the stars, making it emit X-rays (reddish clouds). X-rays also could be produced during violent collisions as material falls into the black hole (golden yellow disk around central bulge) KILONOVA: A VAST COSMIC EVENT Kilonovas are immense explosions caused by neutron stars colliding into each other, sending an intense jet of of high-energy particles through space.  They produce a luminous flash of...
Moscow (CNN)There were fireworks in the skies over Moscow Wednesday night, but not for the reasons one might expect. February 23 marks Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia, a holiday that officially honors those who have served in Russia's armed forces, but in practice is known as День мужчин, or Men's Day -- a sort of Valentine's Day for dudes. Were it to hit, 2022 BH7 would be large enough to destroy an entire continent. Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has provided a rundown of the space rock on its near-Earth Object (NEO) online database. The platform keeps track of anything passing within 120million miles of Earth – a relatively close call by the agency's standards. Thousands of NEOs are tracked by scientists to monitor whether they're on a collision course with our planet. If there's a small chance they'll collide with the Earth and cause significant damage in future, they're labelled "Potentially Hazardous". (CNN)A rogue rocket expected to collide with the moon on March 4 was wrongly identified as a SpaceX Falcon rocket stage and, instead, is likely from a past Chinese lunar mission, according to NASA. The object now on target to hit the moon was first made public by Bill Gray, an independent researcher focused on orbital dynamics and the developer of astronomical software. He identified it in 2015 as the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon rocket, used that same year to launch the US Deep Space Climate Observatory, or DSCOVR.The object, initially called WE0913A by asteroid spotters, had gone past the moon two days after DSCOVR's launch, he said. A rocket booster could crash into the moon in the next few weeks"I and others came to accept the identification with the second stage as correct. The object had about the brightness we would expect, and had showed up at the expected time and moving in a reasonable orbit," Gray said on his website. His assessment was widely accepted by other space experts and NASA, which said it was monitoring...

IN THE upcoming film "Moonfall" a mysterious force knocks the Moon on a collision course with Earth. In the sci-fi flick, which is out this year and stars Halle Berry, the careening object's inflating gravitational pull triggers apocalyptic tsunamis and yanks huge chunks of rock and debris from our planet's surface. 2 It's a farfetched idea and all a bit of fun, but could it ever actually happen, and what effect would this have on Earth? Scientists have chipped in with their theories – with some claiming that our planet is currently on a (very slow) collision course right now. What would happen if the Moon came closer to Earth? Speaking to BBC Science Focus magazine on Wednesday, physicist Dr Tony Cook painted a gloomy picture of any would-be close encounter with the Moon. He said that even if the Moon was half its current distance from Earth, the tides on our planet would be eight times stronger. "There would be a lot of coastal flooding," said Dr Cook, a physics lecturer at Aberystwyth University. There would also be "some...
The Guardian reports that Bill Gray blogged about the Falcon 9 making a "close lunar flyby" this past January, which helped substantiate the theory that the two would soon collide. Eric Berger, a meteorologist and the senior space editor for the technology blog Ars Technica, says that this is probably the first time a piece of hardware accidentally will make contact with the moon. He writes, "It's likely that this will be the first time a piece of space hardware unintentionally strikes the Moon. Typically, during interplanetary missions, a rocket's upper stage is sent into a heliocentric orbit, keeping it away from the Earth and its Moon." Berger claims that the soon-to-occur impact will enable nearby satellites to gather data about what lies beneath the moon's surface for the first time since 2009. "NASA deliberately impacted a spent rocket upper stage into Moon in 2009," stated Berger, "Although scientists are most keen to understand the presence of ice at the lunar poles, being able to observe the subsurface material ejected by the Falcon 9 rocket's strike could still...
The shocking moment a motorcyclist died in a head-on collision while fleeing police has been inadvertently broadcast live on television in Los Angeles.  The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon in West Hills, California, as a news chopper from KCBS-TV was broadcasting live footage of the suspect's wild 130mph flight from a traffic stop.  According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the motorcycle was reported stolen, and police were 'tracking' it after the rider fled from a stop, but officers were not involved in a pursuit.   'Oh my gosh,' a news anchor said, clasping her hands to her mouth as the rider collided head-on with a car. 'We have just seen -- sorry, we just saw that motorcycle crash into a car there at the intersection.' The child, the report added, never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead en route to the hospital. The U.K.'s Sun reported that the suspect — who hails from Saint-Jeoire — is offering his full cooperation with the investigation. He remains in custody in eastern France's Bonneville region. An investigating source said, "The skier involved in the death has been indicted for manslaughter. He has been placed under judicial control and is specifically accused of a deliberate violation of safety obligations." If convicted, the skier could face up to five years in prison and an $85,000 fine. What else it there to know about this? The child's family, according to the report, is "suffering from extreme shock." Jean-Paul Constant, mayor of nearby Arâches-la-Frasse, said that authorities are desperately seeking emotional counsel for the family, which is devastated by the loss of the child. "We are actively looking for a psychologist who speaks English for the family, who have returned to [their home in] Geneva," Constant said according to Sky News. A man has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a five-year-old British girl who was killed in a collision while learning to ski in the French alps.  The 40-year-old suspect, who has not been identified, has been in custody since Saturday in Bonnevile, eastern France. Witnesses recalled watching him skiing ‘at high speed’ over ‘a slight bump’ and then colliding with the little child, who has been named locally only as Ophélie. She was taking a lesson on a Blue beginners’ slope in the resort of Flaine, in France’s eastern Haute-Savoie department. ‘The skier involved in the death has been indicted for manslaughter,’ said an investigating source. A fugitive businessman has been arrested for the beating of a woman following a New Year's Day head-on collision in the southern Dominican Republic province of Peravia. Alexis Villalona, 47, was found hiding at a family member's home in Baní, Peravia, on Friday. A spokesman for the Dominican National Police told Noticías SIN that Villalona was almost arrested on several occasions on Thursday, but each time managed to slip past the police by changing homes.   Villalona's actions sparked outrage across the Caribbean nation after a surveillance camera captured him violently attacking Santa Arias, 35, after she crashed her scooter into his SUV at an intersection the morning of January 1. The word “encirclement” does not appear in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed into law by President Joe Biden on December 27th, or in other recent administration statements about its foreign and military policies. Nor does that classic Cold War era term “containment” ever come up. Still, America’s top leaders have reached a consensus on a strategy to encircle and contain the latest great power, China, with hostile military alliances, thereby thwarting its rise to full superpower status. The gigantic 2022 defense bill — passed with overwhelming support from both parties — provides a detailed blueprint for surrounding China with a potentially suffocating network of U.S. bases, military forces, and increasingly militarized partner states. The goal is to enable Washington to barricade that country’s military inside its own territory and potentially cripple its economy in any future crisis. For China’s leaders, who surely can’t tolerate being encircled in such a fashion, it’s an open invitation to… well, there’s no point in not being blunt… fight their way out of confinement. Like every “defense” bill before it, the $768...
A Royal Navy warship collided with a Russian hunter-killer submarine in the icy waters of the north Atlantic in what is believed to be the first collision between Russian and British vessels since the Cold War.  The Russian submarine was lurking under the waters 200 miles north of Scotland when the crew of HMS Northumberland was dispatched on a 48-hour mission to hunt it down amid fears it would try to tap into or cut undersea cables essential for communication and the internet. The Royal Navy's Type 23 frigate sailed into the region where the sub was believed to be hiding and deployed its array sonar - a cable covered in hydrophones pulled along behind the hull - to listen for sounds from the sub. But in what a navy source has described as a 'million-to-one chance event', the submarine passed right behind the British vessel and smashed into the sonar cable being towed behind the frigate. The collision, which was caught on film by a Channel 5 TV crew, did considerable damage to the HMS Northumberland's sonar device which was...
(CNN)Perhaps it was naive to expect that China's rigid approach to fighting Covid-19 -- complete with locking down millions of people and using invasive surveillance to keep tabs on citizens -- would not eventually cause problems for the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics amid an ongoing global pandemic. Michael BociurkiwAn indication of how uncertain the situation has become for Olympic organizers was last week's decision by North America's National Hockey League (NHL) to skip the Games amid the league's surge in coronavirus cases and potential lengthy quarantine in China if players test positive in Beijing. Last week, a Delta Air Lines flight from Seattle to Shanghai was turned around midair due to new airport cleaning rules that an airline spokesperson called "not operationally viable."Meanwhile, China is battling one of its worst outbreaks of the year in Xi'an, a city 600 miles southwest of Beijing, where 13 million residents are currently on lockdown. The city reported 175 new local symptomatic cases on Tuesday -- the highest daily count in nearly two years.China, which has relied on a number of...
Promising data from South Africa, the world's first Omicron hotspot, suggest that the country's Omicron-driven Covid wave is fading after just one month. After seeing a 1,800 percent increase in infections from late November through mid-December, cases appear to have peaked nationally at about 27,000 on December 15. Cases have fallen in the country for the last five days in a row. Between December 15 and December 22, the case rate has dropped by about 22 percent. At the same time, data from South Africa suggests that Omicron cases are more likely to be mild, in part because vaccinated and previously infected people who catch the variant have protection from severe disease. In the U.S., new Covid cases are rising sharply with about three in four cases nationwide caused by Omicron. On Wednesday, the US recorded a staggering 238,378 new daily infections, and 2,024 new deaths. Since the start of the pandemic, the US has recorded 51.5 million cases of COVID-19 and 812,069 deaths.  The Omicron variant now accounts for 73 percent of new cases in the US and pushes...

The closest pair of supermassive black holes to Earth ever seen have been observed by astronomers. They said the two objects — which are just 1,600 light-years apart — also have a much smaller separation than any other previously spotted pair of supermassive black holes and will eventually merge into one giant black hole. Scientists detected them using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) and said they were about 89 million light-years away from Earth. This is the shocking moment a spectator at a bike race walked out onto the track just before the finish line, knocking over the would-be champion. Racing fans can be heard screaming as the woman and rider are knocked to the floor in the head-on collision. The incident took place at the 'Condaca Salmor Bike' event on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands on Saturday. Footage taken at the scene shows the apparent frontrunner sensing victory in sight and sprinting towards the finish line marking the end of the 55-mile-long route. Spectators account on both sides of the road, and at one point a man is seen casually crossing from one side of the track to the other but with plenty of time to spare.
