The teams' designs are an extension of GEA's microfactory innovation hub, FirstBuild, known for products such as the Opal Nugget Ice Maker and Prisma Cold Brew coffeemaker. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Safer-at-home orders have predictably led to an increase in the use of house appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers. People in the business of repairing these appliances say they’re getting more calls about machinery and business has been booming as a result. “We’re working pretty much full time, seven days a week. you know, waking up at 7 getting home at 7, 12 hour days so we’re swamped right now,” said appliance repair specialist Robert Villatoro. “Right now we’re booked three to four days in advance so we’re having to turn people down or tell them to call someone else or sometimes we try to troubleshoot.” The experience is similar for other appliance workers throughout Southern California. Robert Ehrid, who is the sales manager at Appliance Outlet in Northridge, said foot traffic has doubled since the store reopened after a five-week shutdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. “So once we opened back up, business kind of took off because we’re able to produce,” Ehrid said. With the increase in people at home and hot summer temperatures,...

An appliance shortage is gripping the nation — and Labor Day sales are expected to be a major casualty. Shoppers looking for big-ticket appliances like refrigerators, gas ranges and washer-dryer sets will see downsized, low-key discounting events on the holiday weekend that are likely to disappoint, industry executives say. The traditional end-of-summer blowout sale will be deflated due to the coronavirus, which is crimping supply at the factory level and sparking a surge in demand from locked-down homeowners who are spending money revamping their houses instead of on restaurants and vacations. Last year, General Electric offered promotional pricing on some 330 appliance models, noted John Carey, owner of Designer Appliances, an upscale outlet with showrooms in Montclair and Bedminster, NJ. This year, the number was 25, Carey said, adding that washers, dryers and dishwashers weren’t even on the list. “We are spending 50 percent less on advertising this time of year than we did last year,” Carey told The Post. “If the manufacturers know they can’t fulfill the orders, there is less incentive to try to drive sales at...

Arianny dressed up to go shopping for a washer, dryer, and television. UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste showed off her wild summer style in a flashy ensemble that looked like it was appropriate for a fun night out on the town. However, in the caption of the Instagram post that she shared on Saturday, she revealed that she was dressed up for a trip to the appliance store. In fact, the snapshot that she posted was actually taken in front of a row of stacked washers and dryers. The chrome appliances all had round glass doors that reflected the florescent lights inside the store. They didn’t dim Arianny’s pregnancy glow, but they seemed to be a bit much her eyes. She protected her peepers from the brightness by rocking a pair of oversize sunglasses. The chic shades had dark lenses and shiny black frames that appeared to feature a subtle spotted pattern. The design matched the leopard-print mini dress that she wore. Arianny’s skintight dress hugged her growing baby bump to display it in all its round glory. It also...
A Westchester man will avoid time behind bars after being busted using a fake credit card to illegally purchase appliances last year. Yonkers resident Rahul Masih has been sentenced after pleading guilty in October last year to attempted criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony. Last week, Masih was sentenced in Westchester County Court to five years probation after paying $2,580 in restitution to Atlantic Appliance in Yorktown, where he used the credit card. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. said that on Aug. 3, 2018, Masih received an appliance to be delivered to a Park Avenue address in Yonkers that had been purchased with a fraudulent credit card. Two days earlier, Scarpino said Masih received a delivery a few houses away from that address of a similar purchase with the same company. He alleged the appliance was for renovations though when employees arrived to make the second delivery, they were suspicious because they recognized Masih and the close proximity of the two locations. According to Scarpino, the payment for the first delivery had been reversed...

The effects of the COVID-19 shutdowns are now reverberating across the appliance manufacturing industry. Residents are reporting that refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers are out of stock with a months-long wait for orders across the region. Some are finding orders made in spring being cancelled as retailers grapple with the lack of supply. Others are being told outright that it’s going to take much longer than usual to order and install appliances. “It’s like coming to work with handcuffs on,” David Tarpley, a sales representative with Sargent Appliance in Clinton Township, said. “We had someone come in this weekend who wanted a white side-by-side fridge the same day. We laughed. If we ordered that today, it might be here by the end of August.” Freezers especially have seen higher demand since the beginning of the pandemic as consumers look to keep stocked up on food at home to avoid frequent grocery store trips. The demand for refrigerators, washers and dryers is about the same as always. Martin Hartunian, CEO of ABC Warehouse said the coronavirus’ affect on the supply chain...

If you think of Amazon’s Fire HD tablets in the same way you approach other tablets, you’re going to be disappointed. They’re technically tablets, but the technology in them can’t keep up with the kinds of things you normally associate with tablet computers. Attempting to do all the things you might do on an iPad, high-end Samsung tablet, or a Surface is a recipe for frustration. That’s a criticism, but more importantly it’s a context-shift. I don’t think of the Fire HD 8 Plus as a tablet. I think of it as an appliance for Amazon’s services. The prices Amazon charges for Fire tablets are another hint that you could think of them as part of a different category than the iPad. They’re incredibly (and perhaps unfairly) inexpensive. The Fire HD 8 starts at $89.99, the Fire HD 8 Plus that I’m reviewing starts at $109.99, with the option to buy a wireless charging dock bundle at $140. You can get three Fire HD 8 Plusses for the price of Apple’s least expensive iPad. A $110 tablet is...
