    The Bronx DA's office who charged a New York City sex offender with a misdemeanor assault charge after he punched a diner, fracturing his skull and leaving him in a coma, has defended itself by claiming it is 'still investigating' the shocking attack. Bui Van Phu, 55, a registered sex offender on lifetime parole, was allowed to walk straight out of Bronx Criminal Court on supervised release without bail Thursday afternoon, after appearing before a judge where he was arraigned on third-degree assault, and second-degree harassment.  Neither of those charges are bail eligible under current New York state laws.  The victim, Jesus Cortes, was left with a fractured skull and a brain bleed after the attack a week ago. He has since had brain surgery and is in a coma.     A Pennsylvania man was charged with the abuse of a corpse after allegedly purchasing human remains from a woman on Facebook. Jeremy Lee Pauley, 40, who is known for purchasing various bones and teeth that he restores and resells, was arrested for trying to buy the corpse from a mortuary worker online.  Some of Pauley's purchases have included pelvis 'antiques' and 'very old' skulls from children.  Pauly allegedly purchased $4,000 worth of human remains from Candace Scott, who police say stole them from a mortuary partnered with the University of Arkansas. The human remains included: half a head, a whole head, three brains, a heart, a liver, a lung, two kidneys, a female pelvis, a torso with a nipple, and four human hands. The shop owner was set to receive the shipment from Scott in Pennsylvania, but police intercepted the remains while they were in transit.     A Pennsylvania man has been arrested after he allegedly purchased human remains that were stolen with possible intentions to resell them online. Jeremy Pauley, 40, was arrested on July 20 and charged with abuse of a corpse, receiving stolen property, and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities, according to the East Pennsboro Township Police Department. Pauley initially appeared in court on Thursday and was released on a $50,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing.     A 52-year-old man from Alexandria was arrested for shooting a victim on Thursday, August 18 at a bus stop, Fairfax officials said. At around 1:53 p.m., the 33-year-old victim got into an argument with the suspect, Paul Malone in Huntington, according to the Fairfax Police Department. Malone shot the victim multiple times in their upper body,  before fleeing the scene, authorities reported. Witnesses and police investigation revealed there was a handgun near the scene, and that Malone was located at a nearby hotel, where he was later arrested, police said. Law enforcement said they do not believe the suspect and the victim, who was hospitalized for their injuries, knew each other. Malone was charged with aggravated malicious wounding, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, officials said.     A woman was arrested after threatening to kill a Sussex County homeowner, authorities said. Officers responding to a harassment report on West Shore Tr. in Byram Township found that Caterina Capalbi had threatened to kill the homeowner on Sunday, July 31, police said in a Wednesday, August 17 release. Capalbi had left the scene before officers arrived, but she was placed under arrest after being contacted and investigated, police said. Adam Bies, 46, was arrested in Mercer, Pennsylvania, just days after the FBI conducted a raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, leading to what federal authorities warned was a rise in threats against law enforcement and government officials.     A Long Island man was arrested after allegedly barricading himself in an apartment and threatening police officers following a fight with another person. The incident took place in Levittown around 3:40 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11 at the Kent Garden Apartments on Division Avenue. According to Nassau County PD detectives, officers responded to the Kent Garden Apartments for a disturbance.  Upon arrival, it was determined that Isaac Kodsi, age 35, of Levittown was involved in an incident involving another tenant in the apartment complex. When police attempted to make contact, Kodsi barricaded himself inside his home and made threats to harm the officers, Nassau County police said. Officers then requested assistance from the Special Operations and Emergency Service Units, and the Hostage Negotiation Team.  The officers were eventually able to have Kodsi agree to come out and he was arrested without incident and transported to an area hospital for evaluation.  No injuries were reported.     (CBS DETROIT) – Three people are in custody after leading Michigan State Police troopers and Detroit officers on a high-speed chase while firing shots from an AR-15 pistol at them. Troopers assisted after Detroit Regional Communication Center notified them that Detroit officers were pursuing a stolen black Dodge Ram pickup truck.     A huge blaze has destroyed the home of former NFL star and Super Bowl champion Earl Thomas, according to firefighters in Orange County, California. The massive fire started on Thursday afternoon, and fire chief Matt Manshack told reporters on the scene that it was a 'total loss', per reports from 12 News. It was also reported that fire crews would still be at the property into the night as they continued to battle to put out the flames, while it is as yet unclear what caused the blaze to start.     A man wanted for assaulting and robbing a mother while she was driving with her young child in the car has been arrested, authorities say. Osirameh Garaba was arrested on Monday, Aug. 8, after a warrant was obtained in connection to the robbery, on Wednesday, July 27 according to Prince George's County police. On Monday, July 25, the victim called police from the 8100 block of Bird Lane in Greenbelt after Garaba entered her vehicle while she was stopped at a red light driving away from the Greenway Shopping Center, investigators said. Garaba sat in the back with the victim's child and ordered her to begin driving and to not stop. He then allegedly began beating the victim with a closed fist and the victim brought the car to a complete stop before grabbing her child to flee.  Before the victim was able to flee, Garaba stole her phone, police said.     D.C. police arrested a teen for his involvement in a May carjacking and robbery, authorities said. On May 16 at around 9:50 p.m., Marquis Funderbunk approached a victim in the 2500 block of 9th Street, showed he had a gun, and demanded the victim's property, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Once the victim complied, Funderbunk fled the scene in the victim's vehicle, police said. The 19-year-old was arrested on August 10 and charged with armed carjacking with a gun, officials reported.

    A Florida man, completely naked and armed with a machete, ended up lying on his stomach and arrested after trying to steal another man's clothes Monday.  Brandon Wright, 34, was allegedly picking palmetto berries in the woods in the town of DeLand, officials in Volusia County say.  Wright suddenly wielded a large, machete-style knife and demanded that a nearby surveyor give him his clothes, wallet and phone, according to QFox13.  The surveyor started to comply until Wright threw the machete and some of the berries he'd collected at him.     A 75-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the 40-year-old cold-case murder of a 15-year-old girl who was raped and stabbed 59 times in Palo Alto, California, after police matched his DNA to blood found on the victim's leather jacket. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced on Tuesday that Gary Gene Ramirez had been arrested in Hawaii in connection with the grisly murder of Karen Stitt, the teen who was raped and stabbed at a Northern California bus stop.  Ramirez was arrested at his home in Makawao, Maui, on August 2 and will be arraigned on charges of murder, kidnapping and rape once he is extradited to Santa Clara County.  His next court date in the extradition process is on Wednesday; if convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. In Albany County, Watervliet Police arrested 64-year-old Jamal Ali, of Watervliet, on multiple sex crimes following an alleged incident that occurred on Thursday, Aug. 4. Investigators said Ali approached the victim, an adult man with autism, at a bus stop and invited him back to his home to drink alcoholic beverages and watch a movie. Shortly after they arrived at Ali’s Third Avenue home, he sexually assaulted the victim, according to police. Watervliet Police arrested Ali for criminal sexual act, a felony, and sexual misconduct, a misdemeanor.     State troopers said a large duffle bag they found in the trunk of a car labeled "cookies" this week had less to do with baking and everything to do with getting baked.  Bryan DaRosa, 18, Rick Pierre, 23, and Halland Pierre, 18, all of Lynn, were pulled over on Revere Beach Monday, Aug 8, after a state police trooper spotted DaRosa's BMW had no front license plate and an expired inspection sticker, the Massachusetts State Police Office said. The registration also had lapsed a month prior.  Because of that, police had to impound the car, which meant troopers would need to search it. That's when a simple traffic stop went from annoying to very bad for the three men.  Troopers found a loaded Colt single-action revolver with 30 rounds of ammunition in the front seat, police said.
