U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called the August 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report “code red for humanity.” CNN said, “There’s now a 50-50 chance that the world will surpass a critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming in the next five years. The report says that surpassing the limit is likely to be temporary — temperatures could come back down again — but science shows that even a temporary overshoot could bring irreversible changes to the planet.” Remember the heat waves, drought and wildfires of 2021 that drove away the tourists our economy depends on? A convicted murderer who escaped from custody after stabbing a prison bus driver and is suspected of slaying a family of five while on the run is dead after a shootout with police, authorities said Thursday. Gonzalo Lopez was armed with an AR-15 and several pistols that authorities believe he stole from a home in Centerville, Texas, after killing two adults and three children at the residence. Police in Atascosa County, Texas, on Thursday spotted a vehicle believed to have been stolen from the home by Lopez and gave chase, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. Lopez wrecked the vehicle in Jourdanton, Texas, and was killed after he fired at officers, according to authorities. The escaped convict had been on the run since May 12. “We are very saddened that the murders happened but I will tell you we are breathing a sigh of relief that Lopez will not be able to hurt anyone else,” said Texas Department of Criminal Justice Chief of Staff Jason Clark at a press conference. During his primetime speech, President Biden referenced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and claimed more kids are killed via firearms that via motor vehicles. He said, “Guns are the number one killer of children.” Biden’s claim is only true if you count 18- and 19-year-olds as children. On May 26, 2022, FOX News noted that CDC figures show firearm-related deaths of people ages 0-19 totaled 4,368 in 2020, while motor vehicle deaths for the same age range totaled 4,036. However, if you do a custom search on the CDC numbers so that you are limiting the category of “children” to those 0-17, i.e., those below voting age, then the data completely flips. The number of firearm-related deaths for children aged 0-17 was 2,281 in 2020, while the number of motor vehicle deaths for the same ages was 2,503. Biden did not mention that even in the expanded age range of 0-19, CDC numbers show unintentional motor vehicle deaths were 27 times higher than unintentional firearm-related deaths.

Washington, DC (CNN)General Motors announced Wednesday that it's cut the price of the most affordable Chevrolet Bolt to $26,595, making it the cheapest electric vehicle in the US. The Bolt's new price slightly undercuts the electric Nissan Leaf, which has a suggested retail price of $27,400. The Bolt's price has fallen 27% from the 2020 model, which it sold for $36,620. GM's electric vehicle push has been hampered by a recall of Bolt batteries, which led to supplier LG paying it $1.9 billion last year. A series of fires triggered the recall, which was among the most expensive ever on a per-vehicle basis. GM halted production of the Bolt in September 2021 as it worked with LG to prioritize batteries for recalled vehicles, but the company restarted the assembly line in early April 2022. GM introduced a Bolt crossover, known as the Bolt EUV, in 2022. GM introduced the Bolt sedan in 2016 and sold 23,297 units in 2017. But sales slumped and have been generally flat, with GM selling a combined 24,828 Bolt sedans and crossovers in 2022.Read MoreGM...

The Saudi Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources on Friday announced $6 billion in funding for a plant that will manufacture metals for electric vehicle batteries, plus plans for another $32 billion invested into Saudi Arabia’s mining industry. Al-Arabiya quoted Industry and Mineral Resources Minister Bandar al-Khorayef’s description of the investment plan: The nine projects include a $4 billion steel plate mill complex for the shipbuilding, oil and gas, construction and defense sectors and a “green” flat steel complex that will supply the automotive, food packaging, machinery and equipment, and other industrial sectors. Both projects are already underway, as is a $2 billion EV battery metals plant. … “These targeted investments represent an important ‘down payment’ in our efforts to move beyond exploration and extraction and into the creation of integrated value chains, a central focus of our overall mining strategy,” al-Khorayef said in the statement. In April, the Saudi government signed a deal with Lucid Motors to buy at least 50,000 electric vehicles over the next ten years.  Saudi officials called the deal “a significant move that supports the key...

Brown | AFP | Getty Images DETROIT – Wholesale used-vehicle prices have notably fallen from a record high, set in January, signaling the worst of sky-high prices related to higher inflation in the U.S. may be behind us. Cox Automotive said on Friday that its Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index, which tracks prices of used vehicles sold at its U.S. wholesale auctions, declined 1% in April from March – marking the third straight month of declines from the first month of the year. "We clearly have returned to vehicles depreciating again. That's a good news story for both inflation and for consumers looking to buy a vehicle," Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive told CNBC. Wholesale vehicle prices have dropped 6.4% since the January record. However, prices are still extremely high, and the index remains up 14% from a year ago. The drop-off in pricing comes as Manheim estimates used retail sales declined 13% in April from March, suggesting demand is easing amid...

(CBS4) – When a car goes off-roading in the high country and gets stuck, a nonprofit group called Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery is there to help. Last weekend the group put together a team to remove an SUV from where it was sunk in deep snow in the backcountry on Shrine Pass. Shrine Pass is located to the west of Vail Pass and Interstate 70, and the group wrote that “it took quite a lengthy amount of winch rope to reach the vehicle from an area that was still safe for vehicles to be at.” Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery shared photos of the vehicle rescue on Facebook. They said it took only a few hours to complete. On its website, the group describes its team as follows: “(It) provides emergency support to local and state agencies through large area vehicle based search, person extraction, back-country access support, communications support and other means.”

Chicago Bears receiver Byron Pringle complained about it being hot as he squirmed around uncomfortably in the back of a police cruiser, and told officers 'I see how people die in the backseat of this b****' after he was arrested in Florida for doing donuts in his Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat while his son was in the car.  Pringle, 28, who sat handcuffed in the backseat of the trooper's vehicle for about nine minutes before they started driving over to the Pasco County Jail, begged them to hurry up.   The exchange and Pringle's arrest was captured on dashcam and bodycam video that was later released by the Florida Highway Patrol.  Florida Highway Patrol officers say Pringle became 'verbally confrontational' after he was stopped around 6 p.m. while burning rubber doing donuts in his vehicle on Saturday night in Pascoe County, north of Tampa.  Bodycam video shows Pringle and his passenger, believed to be his son, being pulled from the car, as he's heard on the video telling trooper 'Come on, let me get out.' He then asked for the deputy on the scene to...
