For 60 years, TOSRV has brought bicyclists to the area on a trek that starts in Columbus, Ohio and ends here, all over the course of one day. Of course, those same riders are only here for a night’s rest in the Portsmouth High School Gymnasium before packing up to travel back. According to TouringOhio.com, The tour starts at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus and heads south. It used to follow SR 104 on the west side of the Scioto River, but in recent years because of increased traffic along the route, they switched the route so it travels on the east side of the river on a less traveled road into Circleville. In June of 1988, to inaugurate its 500,000th handcrafted piano, Steinway & Sons threw a glamorous New York gala attended by Van Cliburn, Lazar Berman, Shura Cherkassky and other acclaimed pianists. But the honor of playing the 500,000th piano for the first time in public was given to a little-known 10-year-old Korean musician who, as the emcee put it, was meant to symbolize “the future of piano music.” This past June, 34 years later, that symbolic “future” may have been realized, in spectacular fashion, at the Van Cliburn piano competition. That was when the prestigious event in Texas crowned its youngest-ever winner, South Korean Yunchan Lim, 18, who makes his West Coast debut Sunday with a Steinway Society recital in San Jose. “An absolute superstar,” “a miraculous talent,” “already one of the most stupendous pianists I have ever heard,” tweeted Michael Lewin, head of piano at Boston Conservatory, who echoed the sentiments of thousands worldwide as the Cliburn competition unfolded. Young musicians captivate the music world with stunning regularity, but rarely to Lim’s extent. He has created a fervor and...

More than a year later, the outing still resonates with Chicago Cubs manager David Ross. The Cubs put right-hander Adbert Alzolay in the bullpen for the final month of the 2021 season to manage his workload coming off a hamstring injury as he approached a career high in innings. Alzolay’s dazzling performance in his first relief appearance Sept. 1, 2021, in Minnesota featured four one-hit innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The outing highlighted how great Alzolay could be as a multi-inning reliever, and the Cubs soon will get another look at the 27-year-old in that role. Ross was confident before Wednesday’s series finale against the New York Mets at Citi Field that Alzolay will be activated from the 60-day injured list and join the Cubs this weekend at Wrigley Field. Alzolay has not pitched in the majors this season, limited to five rehab outings to work back from a right shoulder strain he sustained before arriving at camp in March. Ross said Alzolay will be used out of the bullpen once he is activated. Alzolay thrived in relief...

The programme is expected to be postponed following the death of Her Majesty Elizabeth II. 1Manchester United's Europa League game went ahead yesterday with a minute's silenceCredit: Getty Buckingham Palace confirmed yesterday in a statement that The Queen had passed away peacefully at Balmoral aged 96. And while the Government is not planning to enforce a shutdown in sport, Prem chiefs are aware of a potential backlash if they play the weekend’s matches as scheduled. An SEC-caliber senior running back is now eligible to play for the Clayton Valley Charter football team.  Will Stallings Jr., who is committed to play at the University of Tennessee and is a native of nearby Pittsburg, sat out the Ugly Eagles’ first couple of games after transferring from Bishop Gorman high school in Nevada. The 6-1 and 225-pound Stallings Jr. was cleared by the North Coast Section this week.  “They don’t need me, per se, to come out with a win,” Stallings Jr. told the Bay Area News Group before last week’s game against Del Oro. “It’s still a team game, I’m just one player. It’s a team game, so they can always come out with a win without me.” The senior tailback ran for 714 yards and eight touchdowns with Bishop Gorman in 2021. He now joins an Ugly Eagles team that has lost its first two games by seven and four points respectively. Clayton Valley will play at Canyon Springs in Nevada on Friday night.  “I expect big things from him,” Clayton Valley coach Tim Murphy said...

There is a lot to see and do this weekend (and beyond) in the Bay Area. Here’s a partial rundown. Pavement returns Pavement, the Stockton-born band that evolved into something of an icon for a music genre that largely rejected icons and mainstream attention, has reunited for a big concert series early next week in San Francisco. Led by singer/guitarists vocalist Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, Pavement became a pinnacle of the indie/underground rock sound of the 1990s, with its loosely-structured, low-fi, feedback-drenched songs. Though its sound got tighter and more polished as the band evolved, it remained throughout an influential part of the “slacker” rock movement, keeping its distance, and sometimes mocking, more famous alternative rock bands like Smashing Pumpkins. The band drew considerable attention with such releases as 1994’s “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain” (and its single “Cut Your Hair”), and 1995’s “Wowee Zowee,” internal divisions led to the band’s breakup after the release of 1999’s “Terror Twilight.” Pavement reunited in 2010 for a run of concerts and festival appearances, including Coachella. A planned second reunion in 2020 was...

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Sunday, and also on Monday, Labor Day. “Rail Fair is the only time when we bring out our historic railroad car collection from the 1800s. One box car ran through Ardenwood over a century ago and you can actually walk inside and see how it was built,” said Jacque Burgess, event organizer for the Railroad Museum at Ardenwood. “During Rail Fair some of our volunteers will be working on restoring a caboose, and there will be other railroad-related displays.” Train riders will also get a chance to see the group’s new steam locomotive, she said. There will be live music and tours of the historic Patterson House on the property. Families may bring a picnic lunch to eat onsite or purchase food at the Farmyard Cafe. This Labor Day Weekend 2022, the United States’ two most recent presidents — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump — are heading to Pennsylvania. Biden will be in Pittsburgh for a Labor Day parade, while Trump will be in Wilkes-Barre campaigning for two GOP candidates: far-right gubernatorial nominee, conspiracy theorist and Christian nationalist Doug Mastriano and Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is competing with Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman for the U.S. Senate seat presently held by retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey. Biden’s visit to Pittsburgh comes only a few days after his Thursday, September 1 speech from Independence Mall in Philadelphia, where the president forcefully condemned the extremism of “MAGA Republicans.” During his speech, Biden was careful to emphasize that he wasn’t attacking conservatives in general or Republicans in general. Biden, in fact, has a long history of boasting about all the years he spent making bipartisan deals with the late conservative Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona when they were serving in the U.S. Senate. But Biden made it clear, during his forceful speech, that he...

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) are urging motorists to practice safe driving habits this weekend as they travel to celebrate Labor Day, the last summer holiday. The holiday travel period begins Friday, September 2, at 6 p.m. and ends Monday, September 6, at 11:59 p.m. “The Labor Day holiday signals the end of the summer travel season, and travelers will use the extended weekend to take their final summer trips,” said Colonel Christopher Wright, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “Celebrations across the state will increase traffic on our highways. We encourage all drivers to practice safe driving habits to make it to their destinations and back home safely.” To keep the number of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities as low as possible, Troopers and MCCD Officers will be highly visible during the 78-hour weekend patrolling interstates and secondary roads, looking for impaired drivers, speeders, distracted drivers, seatbelt violations, and unsafe drivers. During the 2021 Labor Day holiday period, Troopers investigated...
