Lonzo Ball will have left knee surgery next week and miss the start of the season as the Chicago Bulls continue to seek answers for their starting point guard’s lingering injury. The Bulls announced Wednesday that Ball on Sept. 28 will undergo an arthroscopic debridement — a procedure that removes cartilage, tissue and other debris — of his left knee. The procedure will take place in Los Angeles, where Ball has spent the offseason attempting to rehab the injury initially suffered in January. Ball will be reevaluated four to six weeks after the procedure, sidelining him through at least the first five games of the season. His absence is likely to stretch longer. By the time he is reevaluated, Ball will have gone more than 10 months without being able to run at full speed or scrimmage with contact, and that volume of missed games will require a lengthy onboarding back into the weekly workload of the regular season. In the meantime, Ball’s absence leaves a gaping hole in the Bulls lineup, which will rely on second-year pro Ayo Dosunmu...

SANTA CLARA — Kyle Shanahan reaffirmed what appeared to be obvious Wednesday when he said quarterback Trey Lance would be out for the season after surgery to repair a broken right fibula with ligament damage. The good news? It would be a big surprise if Lance was unable to participate in non-contact offseason work and then be ready for training camp next July. Although the broken bone in Lance’s leg will likely be healed before the end of the season, getting him back up to speed for a violent collision sport is another matter. That’s the opinion of Dr. David Oji of Stanford Hospital, an orthopedic surgeon and an expert in ankle injuries. Oji doesn’t know the specifics of the Lance surgery other than the 49ers’ statement of “broken right fibula with ligament disruption,” but has experience treating and operating on patients with broken ankles. “The fracture for these types of injuries is in about two months the fracture is fairly stable,” Oji said in a phone interview. “It’s not fully healed but there’s enough bone healing that it’s mechanically...

"It’s unfortunate that the judge’s ruling today does not square with his vague April decision,” he added. ACLU attorney Malita Picasso expressed outrage at the statement by Brereton. “It’s shocking that after this morning’s hearing the department would allege there was any lack of clarity in the court’s ruling from the bench,” Picasso said. “It was very clear that Judge Moses expressly required a reversion to the 2017 policy, and anything short of that is a continued flagrant violation of the court’s order.” Here's more about the Montana fight over gender: Montana judge blocks anti-trans birth certificate rule www.youtube.com

Lonzo Ball missed much of last season after knee surgery and he won’t be ready for training camp. How much does his absence limit the Bulls? In less than a month, the Chicago Bulls will open their training camp for the start of the 2022-23 season. Unfortunately, they’ll have to do so without their starting point guard, Lonzo Ball. After missing over 50 games last season, Ball is doubtful to be ready for the start of the season, and is expected to miss all of training camp due to continued issues with his knee from the meniscus surgery he had last season, according to ESPN’s Jamal Collier and Ramona Shelburne. The Bulls enter this season with championship aspirations and hopes of rekindling last season’s early success. Losing Ball to start the season is a drastic setback for an offense that was reliant upon his playmaking to balance the floor. With two of the game’s best wing scorers in DeMar DeRozan and Zach Lavine, Ball’s facilitating became an integral part of an offense that reinvigorated the Bulls last season. In only...

A 5lb newborn boy with a life-threatening heart defect received a world-first partial heart transplant using living tissue that may never need to be replaced. North Carolina child Owen Monroe, who is now four months old, was born with his two main arteries — the aorta and pulmonary artery — fused together in a condition called truncus arteriosus. Doctors separated them and replaced 'leaky' heart valves shortly after birth using with living tissue that will grow with him, avoiding further surgery. In operations to repair fused valves, dead tissue is usually used — but it needs to be replaced in extensive surgery up to three times before adulthood, and every 10 years after that.  Now four months on from the surgery at Duke University, North Carolina, the infant is 'thriving' and hitting every development milestone.  His mother, Tayler Monroe, called the procedure a 'miracle' and said that it saved her son's life.  Truncus arteriosus is normally a death sentence for infants without surgery, as the heart over-works itself struggling to get nutrients to every corner of the body. It is also...

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to miss training camp as he continues to battle long-term pain and discomfort in his left knee following a January meniscus surgery, according to an ESPN report. The latest setback throws greater doubt about the point guard’s availability for the start of the regular season in October. Ball spent the summer in Los Angeles focusing on rehabilitation after missing the final four months of the 2021-22 season following arthroscopic surgery on Jan. 28. Ball doesn’t have structural damage in the knee, according to the ESPN report, but pain has persisted for more than six months, preventing him from returning to full-speed drills or contact play. The Bulls front office and coaching staff have been vague throughout the summer in detailing Ball’s recovery plans and the likelihood of his availability for the start of the season. Executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas hinted at setbacks during a summer league broadcast in July, echoing concern from general manager Marc Eversley’s account that Ball hadn’t been able to scrimmage in June. “He’s progressing. That’s...

Orlando Magic guard Gary Harris had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after tearing his meniscus, a league source told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday. The Magic announced Harris had surgery after the Sentinel’s reporting. The procedure took place Wednesday. His return to play will depend on how he responds to rehabilitation and treatment, according to the Magic. An arthroscopic meniscectomy is “a minimally invasive surgical procedure” that’s used to treat a torn meniscus cartilage in which only the torn segment is removed, according to the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. Daniel Kharrazi, an orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, told the Sentinel a meniscectomy is a “very common procedure,” adding it generally can take up to two months for an athlete to return. “Think of the meniscus as a cushion between the bones and joints that gives you padding,” Kharrazi said. “When that tears, it creates inflammation and pain inside the knee. In professional players, if it creates symptoms, we recommend arthroscopically fixing it so it can go back to...

This Chicago White Sox season has seen 30 injury list moves since opening day, including multiple trips for several players. Manager Tony La Russa was the latest to miss time after the team announced Wednesday he would be out of the dugout indefinitely while dealing with an undisclosed medical issue. Now the injury bug has even spread to the grounds crew with news that longtime groundskeeper Roger “The Sodfather” Bossard will undergo a hernia operation next week. Bossard confirmed the surgery will sideline him for most of the final month of the regular season. Bossard has only missed seven home games in his 56 seasons working for the White Sox at old Comiskey Park and Guaranteed Rate Field — and two of those absences were because he was asked to go to Arizona to work on the field at their spring training facility. Bossard even worked the field at Sox Park during the start of the pandemic in 2020 when the season was delayed and only a few employees were allowed inside the ballpark. He’s been the Sox’s head groundskeeper...

Twelve months later, when he was prepared to return to the mound, the 2020 minor-league season was canceled because of the pandemic. Then he experienced elbow tightness and battled a nearly deadly case of COVID-19 last August. The date remains seared in Estrada’s mind — Aug. 25, 2021 — beginning an ordeal that landed him in the hospital fighting for his life, let alone his baseball future. “It was the worst feeling and the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life,” Estrada, 23, said Tuesday. Estrada initially was sidelined with elbow tightness. As he ramped up to rejoin Low-A Myrtle Beach, Estrada contracted COVID-19 while with the team in Fayetteville, N.C. A detransitioner has told how he was 'brainwashed' into having gender reassignment surgery after believing himself to be a woman trapped in the wrong body. Going by the name Shape Shifter, the 32-years-old who lives in Massachusetts grew up in a Muslim country in the Balkans where even being gay was frowned upon, but he believed that if he transitioned to female he would finally feel happy with himself. He was given a referral letter by Fenway Health in Massachusetts, which he claims has been taken over by biased pro-trans activists. The surgery itself was performed by Dr Sherman Leis of the The Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery. He is regarded as the United States' most experienced gender reassignment surgeon. But soon after the operation was complete in 2015 in his mid-20s, Shape Shifter quickly realized he had made a terrible mistake, and that he was just a gay man who enjoyed presenting in a feminine way.  The procedures he has undergone - which include the removal of his penis and the creation of a 'neo-vagina' are irreversible. Sleeping through the night evaded Brennen Davis. Even something as basic as sitting to watch TV caused pain, let alone trying to play baseball, as Davis’ day-to-day quality of life was suffering. What at first manifested as back tightness in March during big-league camp with the Chicago Cubs by early May had morphed into debilitating sciatica. “If you’ve ever had sciatic pain, it is miserable,” Davis told the Tribune Thursday. “Every little thing would just flare it up and it was aching. It was one of the worst things I’ve ever done.” When his symptoms progressively elevated from his leg to numbness in his right foot, Davis knew he needed to dig into what was going on with his back and body. Back surgery was ultimately deemed the solution and the June 2 procedure revealed his best-case scenario: no structural damage. A cluster of blood vessels were cauterized and subsequently eliminated the sciatica symptoms. Davis began his rehab assignment Tuesday with High-A South Bend after five games in the Arizona Complex League, his first game action in nearly 3½ months....

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones revealed on Thursday that he underwent a “non-football related procedure” on his neck “early in the winter.” Jones said the previously undisclosed surgery was “completely unrelated” to the “neck strain” that prematurely ended his 2021 NFL season after a Week 12 injury in Philadelphia. A small scar at the bottom of Jones’ neck, in a photo circulated on social media, prompted a question about whether he’d had surgery to correct last season’s injury. “No, I didn’t. I didn’t at all,” he said. “I had a non-football related procedure done on my neck. I saw there was some [speculation] about it [online]. But it was completely unrelated. I feel good. Neck’s great.” Jones added that the surgery happened “early in the winter” and reiterated that it was “unrelated” to last season’s injury. The press conference was cut off at that point, and he took no more questions on the topic. It’s unheard of nowadays for an NFL team to successfully keep a surgery to its starting quarterback under wraps. This story isn’t over, though. Understanding the exact...

It’s hard to measure the impact of any one drug on world history. But here are five drugs we can safely say made a huge difference to our lives, often in ways we didn’t expect. They have brought some incredible benefits. But they’ve usually also come with a legacy of complications we need to look at critically. It’s a good reminder that today’s wonder drug may be tomorrow’s problem drug.1. Anesthesia In the late 1700s, English chemist Joseph Priestley made a gas he called “phlogisticated nitrous air” (nitrous oxide). English chemist Humphry Davy thought it could be used as pain relief in surgery, but instead it became a recreational drug. It wasn’t until 1834 that we reached another milestone. That’s when French chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas named a new gas chloroform. Scottish doctor James Young Simpson used it in 1847 to assist a birth. Soon anesthesia was more widely used during surgery, bringing better recovery rates. Before anesthesia, surgical patients would often die of shock from the pain. But any drug that can make people unconscious can also cause harm. Modern...

The Houston Astros are sitting pretty in the division and as a whole, but they’ll finish the 2022 season without a veteran bat in the lineup.  It’d be hard for the Houston Astros to have much of a complaint about anything at this point of the season. The club is sporting an 11-game lead in the AL West over the Seattle Mariners — despite that team surging — and has the best record in the American League as a whole as they’ve overtaken the Yankees. Yet, as the Astros are clearly on a trajectory to not just make the playoffs but also go on a deep postseason run, the latest injury update out of Houston is at least minorly alarming. On Friday, the team announced that veteran outfielder Michael Brantley underwent surgery and will be out for the rest of the 2022 season. A Las Vegas hockey team expected to challenge for a Stanley Cup was dealt a massive blow Thursday, when it was announced goaltender Robin Lehner would be out for the entire season. In a statement on social media, the team said a hip injury that requires surgery was the cause of the absence. The team did not say what caused the injury or if it was at a team event.  Lehner suffered from a shoulder injury at the end of the 2021-22 season that saw him undergo surgery and miss the last three games of the year. The Golden Knights now head into the season with a tandem of Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit, as new acquisition Michael Hutchinson serves the role of the No. 3 option. All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson will have surgery on his injured left middle finger and is expected to miss about six weeks, the Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday. The Sox placed Anderson on the 10-day injured list and reinstated reliever Reynaldo López from the 15-day IL between games of their doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals, who won the first game 4-2. Anderson suffered a sagittal band tear in the finger on a checked swing during the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers, the Sox said. Anderson looked at his hand after checking his swing, then grounded out to third on the next pitch. The injury is causing a dislocation of the finger’s exterior tendon, according to the Sox statement, and Anderson will undergo surgery Thursday in Chicago. “My understanding is he’s getting examined,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday’s first game. “We’ll know something about it by the end of the first game. “We’re definitely concerned. We’ll see what that exam says.” Anderson began serving a two-game suspension in Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers...
