Getty Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics. Almost everything has gone right for the Boston Celtics this season. They lay claim to the best offensive rating in the NBA this year (and in NBA history) and also sit at 18-4 on the season, giving them the best record in the Eastern Conference (and the league). However, before the season began, they were in the news due to their ongoing extension talks with Grant Williams. Since they never got a deal done, Williams will be a restricted free agent this summer. According to sources who spoke to Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports, the Celtics should be “afraid” of a big offer. “I would be afraid of a big, front-loaded offer for Williams,” an Eastern Conference executive told Deveney. “Something that tails downward. He does not want to leave Boston, and they don’t want to lose him, but if it comes to it and someone gives him a deal that starts at $20 million and descends from there, can the Celtics match that? Probably not. But is any team going...

Q: What’s the expected schedule for repairing/repaving Interstate 680 southbound from the Benicia Bridge to Concord??? Unless a driver knows this road well, especially just coming off the bridge at speed, you could easily shred a thin tire, bend a rim, or stress a strut on the long, deep stretches of expanded cracks, destroyed pavement, and giant potholes. Most of the damage is in the tire worn sections of the lanes, so it’s hard to avoid, unless there’s light traffic with room to quickly maneuver. It’s ugly and dangerous!!! Any information is welcome! Cathy Aaron, Walnut Creek  A: Most likely this will be done next summer. There’s more 680 news for a different part of the Bay Area. On Dec. 6, Caltrans will activate ramp meters to northbound 680 at interchanges from Calaveras Boulevard (Highway 237) in Milpitas to Stoneridge Drive in Pleasanton. Ramp meters will operate only on weekdays during the afternoon peak period, between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The meters will only regulate traffic when congestion develops. Otherwise, they will be dark or on continuous green. Q:...
Respiratory Therapist Adel Al Joaid treats Melissa Wartman, a COVID-19 patient, in the ICU at Rush University Medial Center on January 31, 2022 in Chicago, Illinois.Scott Olson | Getty Images Infants too young for vaccination were hospitalized with Covid-19 more often than any age group other than the elderly during the omicron BA.5 wave over the summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC, in a report published Thursday, found that hospitalizations among infants younger than six months surged elevenfold from April through July of this year when omicron BA.2 and subsequently BA.5 were the dominant variants circulating. The average weekly hospitalization rate among young infants during this period was about 13.7 per 100,000. This was about the same as patients ages 65 to 74 at 13.8 per 100,000. It was more frequent than all other children and adults younger than 65, according to the CDC report. Fortunately, the surge in hospitalizations among young infants was not associated with increased severity. In fact, the length of hospital stay and the proportion of admissions that needed intensive...

The “Looking Glass” ponders economic and real estate trends through two distinct lenses: the optimist’s “glass half-full” and the pessimist’s “glass half-empty.” Buzz: It wasn’t just homebuying that slowed this summer. Californians spent frugally in the third quarter. Source: My trusty spreadsheet analyzed state sales tax collection by industry, looking particularly at consumer-centric activity in the third quarter. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration’s tabulation of sales taxes payments is a rough indicator of consumer spending. Debate: Homebuying binges and wild consumer spending is history. Yes, the almost $19 billion in statewide sales tax collections for the three months ended in September equals 7%-a-year growth. However, that upswing is roughly one-third of the 20% spending pop during the summer of 2021 that was a speedy bounce back from coronavirus lockdowns of 2020. Glass half-full So, where is spending increasing? Let’s start with gas stations, which collected $766 million in sales tax, up $120 million or 19% in a year vs. a rise of 55% in the previous 12 months. Rising pump prices fueled this spending growth, which certainly...

Between staffing shortages, aircraft delays and airlines' conservative schedules after costly travel meltdowns, available seats are limited. Airlines are also passing along higher fuel prices and other costs to customers, keeping ticket prices elevated. But travelers, at least so far, are willing to pay the price. "Holiday flights are going to be expensive once again," said Scott Keyes, founder of flight-deal site Scott's Cheap Flights. "The pricing power has shifted back to the airlines for winter holiday travel." The EU is working on new measures to mitigate gas prices.Donato Fasano | Getty Images News | Getty Images LONDON — The European Union is working on new measures to prevent extremely high gas prices after "excessive" levels seen this summer, in a move that could have major implications for European consumers. The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, proposed Tuesday setting a limit on daily gas trading levels. The aim is to avoid price spikes, which can lead to higher energy bills for households. The front-month gas price at the Dutch TTF hub, a European benchmark for natural gas trading, reached historic levels in late August, when the price of natural gas jumped to 341 euros ($334) per megawatt hour, from around 45 euros a year earlier. Prices have come down since then as EU nations have taken steps to improve their energy supply, but they remain relatively high on an historic basis and are a major problem for the European economy. European natural gas prices were trading around 120 euros per megawatt hour Tuesday. "We are in...
Getty Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics. Last year marked a season of growth for the Boston Celtics. Obviously, their trip to the NBA Finals was the first under the current core, but it meant so much more than that. Coming two wins away from a championship meant a lot, but a deeper look reveals how much it affected the leaders of the team. For the first time in their careers, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown seem to be the unquestioned leaders of this Celtics team. They may have been the best players last year, but Al Horford and Marcus Smart provided the necessary veteran leadership behind them. And while those two will still play crucial roles, it seems as though the Finals loss sparked a change in mindset for Boston’s stars. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated noted this in regard to Jayson Tatum in his recent cover story. “I spent a few weeks before that talking to people that were close to Tatum. And they did describe a shift in him, a change that they’ve seen from...
In an attempt to find a drought-tolerant ground cover for his Irvine homeowners’ association landscape, Jim Harrison introduced kurapia in selected areas this summer. Harrison wrote that it was “planted in July, filled in nicely in August, and survived well in September heat.”  He found it to be a “great substitute for brown grass problems. We are expanding the use in mixed shade/sun areas; it uses the same sprinkler time as low-water plants watered from the same valve.” He did mention that “some dog owners are concerned about the increase of bees” since bees do sting dogs, as you may know. I would suggest monthly mowing of the kurapia since that generally prevents kurapia flower development. The kurapia had been installed in sod-like strips. I received another email from Irvine, this one detailing the history of a Japanese maple that was planted in an enormous ceramic pot five years ago. It is doing quite well in an area where it is exposed to sun in the early morning and shade throughout the afternoon. However, it now has an unkempt look...

They have a deeper rotation this year with the return of Joe Harris, the addition of Markieff Morris, and re-signing Patty Mills. Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors and soak up as much sun as possible before the inevitable chilly weather of fall arrives. It’s a time for cookouts, parties, and visits to the park, and a time when we love to relax on beaches and play in the water. But as we walk along the sandy beaches, we often see a sad and unsightly reminder of what humans are doing to the planet. Sprinkled along the shoreline, people find balloons, food waste, bottles, and cans — even tires and fishing nets. Some of it was intentionally left behind by careless people, but much of it comes directly from the ocean, which has slowly turned into a plastic soup. Our oceans are filled with so much plastic trash, it is estimated they will contain more plastic than fish by the year 2050. A combination of sun and friction from the water breaks down plastic items into microplastics that are ingested by fish and marine animals. Birds have been found deceased with stomachs full of plastic, and marine animals get tangled...

The Queen's final heartbreak before her death age 96 last week was the news that her beloved dorgi Candy had died after 18 years of being by her side. Known for her immense love for corgis, the loss of her oldest and longest-surviving dog hit the late Queen hard and was said to be 'distraught' about it. Which makes it all the more surprising that Her Majesty found her final days in Balmoral so consoling, as Candy's death came soon after her arrival in the Scottish Highlands earlier in the summer. The loss of the dachshund-corgi cross breed was a huge blow to the Queen as Candy had been at her side since 2004, making her more than 18 — a remarkable age for a dorgi. Poignantly the dog had the same name as a much-loved yellow Labrador of Prince Philip. She was one of the Queen's four dorgis (Cider, Berry and Vulcan being the others) but outlived them all. Dolphins are among the most complex and intelligent species on the planet. They are self-aware and can recognize themselves in a mirror and notice changes in their appearance. And just like us, they have deep social and emotional bonds with their pod members. Studies have also shown that dolphins have personalized whistles for members in the pod, similar to how humans give each other names. Unfortunately, due to their impressive learning abilities, dolphins are often exploited by humans for use in entertainment at aquariums, marine parks like SeaWorld, Miami Seaquarium, Marineland of Canada, and Loro Parque.  While the award-winning 2013 documentary Blackfish shattered the wholesome image of marine parks being fun, family-friendly destinations, swim-with-dolphin tourist attractions are still on the rise. webidrole/Pixabay As with any attraction where animals are used to turn a profit, swim-with-dolphins attractions have a dark side. Self-tanners have come a long way since the days of off-putting chemical scents and the potential for turning a hideous orange hue that resembles a certain former president’s look (!!). Besides a healthy golden glow, a tan camouflages all perceived imperfections, making me feel more confident in the buff. Since you’re not going to a nude beach (let’s be real), self-tanner is the best way to get an all-over, healthy tan in the privacy of your home. My search for a natural-looking product ended with St. Tropez’s deliciously watermelon-scented gradual tanner. Getting bronzed while smelling like candy is now a thing. I was intimidated by applying the tanner, so I got an application mitt for even spreading and to avoid stained hands. It took a few attempts before I felt like a pro, but once I got the hang of it, it was easy. The formula is super hydrating and absorbs quickly, making skin soft but not greasy. I really love the fresh...

When it rains, water pours through the ceilings of the California Correctional Center in Susanville, sometimes flooding the cells of incarcerated men who have resorted to using soap to seal leaks. Some toilets in the prison don’t flush and are filled with green algae. And when the Dixie fire — the second-largest wildfire in California history — burned last summer a few miles outside town, inmates were not moved from the facility, even as electricity and water were shut off, smoke filled their cells, and they had to cover their faces with wet towels to breathe, according to court documents filed in Lassen County Superior Court, signed by about 100 men incarcerated there. “These kinds of barbaric, inhumane conditions are unacceptable in a civilized society,” the documents say. Inmates and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation agree on one thing: The remote, aging prison, which needs millions of dollars in repairs, must be shut down. The state was supposed to close the facility by June. But it remains open. California California’s prison boom saved this...

The death of a Nebraska child has been linked to the brain eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri that kills nearly every single person it infects.  The unnamed child is believed to have caught the infection while swimming in Elkhorn River, which crosses through the Omaha, Nebraska, area. Officials revealed that he died in Douglas County, which includes the state's largest city. If confirmed, this would be the Cornhusker's state first recorded case of brain eating amoeba infection. Brain eating amoeba infections are rare but incredibly deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 154 cases from 1962 to 2021, with another three so far this summer. Only four Americans have ever survived the infection. Experts warn that the beings are most active during summer months when the temperature begins to warm. They are found in lakes and rivers around America, though they can also be hiding in swimming pools and splash parks that do not have proper sanitation practices.  'Millions of recreational water exposures occur each year, while only 0 to 8 Naegleria fowleri infections are identified each year,'...
