Pixabay A heart is drawn in the sand at the beach. A former “Bachelor” star has found her Prince Charming after a rocky run on reality television a few years back. Madison Prewett’s journey on “The Bachelor” did not work out as she had hoped, but she just got engaged to her boyfriend of nine months, Grant Troutt. Prewett was on Peter Weber’s season of “The Bachelor” in 2020, and their dynamic became quite complicated due to how he handled the Fantasy Suites. Prewett had told Weber that she was saving herself for marriage. When she learned Weber had been intimate with the other two remaining women during their respective overnight dates, she quit the show. Weber gave Hannah Ann Sluss his final rose, and the two got engaged. Soon after filming ended, however, rumors swirled about Weber wanting to reconnect with other contestants from his season. He reunited briefly with Prewett during the “After the Final Rose” show, but the two quickly determined their romance was not meant to be. Now, she’s engaged to Troutt, and she...
Getty Brooklyn Nets stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant look on during a playoff game against the Boston Celtics. Potential trades for Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell are still floating around the ether but, barring something unexpected, it looks as though the Miami Heat may find themselves boxed out of the action in both cases. As it stands, Pat Riley likely lacks the assets to get something done. That may end up being the logline for the offseason, too. Despite the Godfather’s lengthy history of landing stars, not to mention the prevailing thought that standing pat wasn’t an option for the club, Miami is treading shockingly close to simply running it back (sans PJ Tucker) next season. Of course, making blockbuster trades is hard to do — and it takes two (or more) to tango — so the South Beach faithful may just have to temper some expectations. Having said that, Bleacher Report‘s Greg Swartz does see one potential star-grabbing trade out there for the Heat. It’s one that comes with a level of risk, however.B/R: Miami Could...
Getty Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell directs the action during a bout with the New York Knicks. Donovan Mitchell’s potential move to the New York Knicks may be the talk of the town currently, but rumblings of his Eastward march have actually been percolating for some time now. After all, Mitchell is a New York guy, the CAA connection is in full effect and the Knicks already plucked his developmental guru, Johnnie Bryant, from the Utah Jazz back in 2020. As the possibility of a trade between the Jazz and the Knicks teeters on the edge of reality, though, there are some clear roadblocks preventing it from coming to fruition. Namely, Utah CEO Danny Ainge’s desire to receive almost all of New York’s youth contingent and something like 47 (or six-ish) draft picks as a return package. Consequently, the two sides look to be in something of a holding pattern, with each waiting for the other to blink. In the meantime, Bleacher Report‘s Andy Bailey just floated a deal that would yield a major haul for Utah while...
Getty Kevin Durant drives against Jimmy Butler during a game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat. Perhaps more than any decision-maker in the NBA, Miami Heat president Pat Riley has shown a knack for landing big-time stars (and seeing big-time results for his efforts). So, even before the Heat fell short in the East Finals against the Celtics, there were rumblings about his next home-run swing. Two weeks into the Association’s proverbial hot stove period, though, the Godfather has yet to make a headline-grabbing move. But that’s not to say that the Heat haven’t figured prominently in trade chatter. In the wake of Kevin Durant‘s jaw-dropping request to be traded from the Nets, Miami was namechecked as one of the franchises at the top of his wish list. And why not? The Heat are built to win now with a low-key superstar in Jimmy Butler, one of the game’s best pivots in Bam Adebayo, an elite coach in Erik Spoelstra and a cornucopia of high-level role players. Whether or not Riley can actually offer something the...
(CNN)When Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah proposed his Family Security Act (FSA) last February, he was met mainly with silence or criticism within the Republican Party. The proposal called for paying families an unconditional cash benefit of $250 to $350 per child per month ($3,000 to $4,200 per year), which Republican Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Mike Lee of Utah characterized as "universal basic income" and "welfare assistance." No member of Congress signed on. Oren Cass But Romney did succeed in triggering a vital debate among conservatives about how best to support families with public policy, prompting a range of events and proposals. And since the leaked Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization made clear that Roe v. Wade would soon be overturned, the question of how public policy can better support expectant and new mothers has become a top priority. Now, Romney has partnered with Sens. Steve Daines of Montana and Richard Burr of North Carolina, both rock-ribbed conservatives, to release a Family Security Act 2.0 that appears to have squared the circle....
There were many in golf who thought that Jack Nicklaus had damaged his reputation irrevocably when he came out and warmly endorsed Donald Trump in 2020 to serve for a further four years as President of the United States. SKOPJE, North Macedonia (AP) — Nightly protests in North Macedonia over the past week have left dozens injured. At the heart of the turmoil is the small Balkan country’s long-running quest to join the European Union, a process that has faced one hurdle after the other. The most recent obstacle is a veto by EU member Bulgaria. A French proposal for a compromise to address Bulgaria’s concerns has divided North Macedonia, sparking the sometimes violent protests. France’s plan also met deep objections in Bulgaria and helped to bring down the government, which had accepted the compromise. WHAT IS THE DISPUTE ABOUT? North Macedonia has been an EU candidate for 17 years. The country emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and sought to forge a strong national identity. But in a region where borders and ethnicities have shifted and overlapped over centuries, it was beset by problems from the start. The country’s chosen name, Macedonia, sparked outrage in neighboring Greece, which said the term harbored expansionist aims against its own province of the same...
The Chicago Bears are making progress toward completing their purchase of Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, officials say, with the clock ticking toward a deadline to seal the deal in 2023. Village documents obtained by the Tribune show the highest levels of the team’s administration, including Chairman George McCaskey, have been involved in meetings to make the purchase and subsequent construction of a new football stadium happen. The documents showed that the team deposited $125,000 with the village for studies of the stadium proposal, and they also included a former baseball executive’s proposal to add a minor league baseball complex to the site. In September 2021, the team announced it had signed a purchase agreement to buy the property from Churchill Downs Inc. for $197 million, pending final approvals by both parties. Churchill Downs Inc. subsequently closed the famed racetrack. The Bears would have to break their lease at Soldier Field to build a new stadium at Arlington. The new baseball fields were proposed by William Larsen, former general manager of the Kane County Cougars minor league team. In...
Getty Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant laugh together following a 2021 game between the Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn Nets. Free agency has already been incredibly eventful for the Golden State Warriors, who suddenly find themselves with a slew of roster spots to fill. Although the club was able to re-up with its biggest offseason priority in Kevon Looney, Bob Myers and his brain trust were less successful with Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr. Payton looks to be joining the Portland Trail Blazers on a three-year deal worth $28 million, while the Toronto Raptors are signing Porter to a two-year pact, presumably using part of their MLE. Elsewhere on the roster, Chris Chiozza and Juan Toscano-Anderson were given their walking papers as well. However, the biggest news of early free agency (and the summer, really) is that former Dub Kevin Durant has requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. And while opinions are mixed on whether such a move would be possible — or even advisable — pundits are already talking about a Bay Area return...
Getty Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins on the court prior to Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. For Golden State Warriors people, Andrew Wiggins’ exorbitant contract has been a point for discussion since before the 2021-22 campaign began. With the former No.1 overall pick slated to make $33.6 million in the final year of his deal next season, many have felt as though the time is nigh for the team to cash in on the pact before it expires. That urgency to get out from under him has only increased with the Dubs expected to dole out a massive extension to Jordan Poole, who averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.4 assists per game this past season. However, after Wiggins became a first-time All-Star in ’21-22, as well as a key cog in the Dubs’ effort to recapture the NBA championship, there’s suddenly a thought that they could re-up with both Poole and Wiggins — luxury tax be damned. Or, there’s a third path that Golden State could take with their star wings....
Getty Kevin Durant congratulates Steph Curry during a Golden State Warriors game. The Golden State Warriors have meticulously created a “two-timeline” path that has already produced an NBA title with the opportunity to compete for many years to come with a young core of potential stars. One insider believes the team could consider blowing up that plan to build an entirely new path. Dieter Kurtenbach of the Mercury News noted that the situation in Brooklyn is set to implode, with Kyrie Irving potentially leaving and Kevin Durant now considering whether he stays with the team that he picked over the Warriors in 2019. If Durant does choose to leave, a reunion with Golden State wouldn’t be out of the question, Kurtenbach noted. The latest Warriors news straight to your inbox! PRESIDENT Joe Biden has asked Congress to approve a gas tax holiday to combat rising gas prices. The request comes as gas prices have hit an all-time high, reaching an average of $5 per gallon across the country. 2President Joe Biden proposed a gas tax holiday What is the proposed gas tax holiday? If passed, the gas tax holiday would extend over three months, alleviating the strain on consumers at the pump. President Joe Biden's proposal would remove the federal gas tax which amounts to 18 cents per regular gallon and 24 cents per diesel gallon. The gas tax holiday would occur over the summer months, typically when drivers take to the road for their travels. PRESIDENT Joe Biden announced Monday that he is considering enacting a federal gas tax holiday to help Americans save money. Prices have increased by 8.6% overall since last May, according to inflation data, and energy costs have experienced the sharpest rise. 1President Biden is considering a proposal that would save Americans roughly 18 cents per gallon at the gas pump Overall energy costs are up 34.6% in the last 12 months, while gasoline prices have jumped 48.7%. By enacting a gas tax holiday, Biden would suspend the 18.4 cents per gallon tax on every gas purchase nationwide. For a small car with an average-sized 12-gallon tank, the tax freeze would mean savings of around $2.21 per tank. Homes are missing from governor’s plan Re. “Mental health bill faces push back,” Page A1, May 3: I am disturbed by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to allow courts to force the mentally ill to submit to a care plan. While this proposal ties into Newsom’s plan to tackle the homeless situation, there simply isn’t enough thought put into this plan. Mental health issues are only one facet of what brings someone to homelessness, and this bill fails to account for what should be the biggest one: How will these people be housed, and who is responsible for it? If we spend money, time and effort on imposing treatment upon the mentally ill, but leave out the matter of housing, then doesn’t that just leave those people exactly where they started? Surely, there must be a more compassionate way to care for our homeless population. I urge legislators to push back against this proposal and carefully consider solutions that prioritize housing. With the Miami Heat fresh off a big Game 3 win over the Celtics in Boston, fans have to feel good about the club’s current direction. Whether the Heat advance to the NBA Finals and win the championship or not, though, team president Pat Riley will undoubtedly be exploring his options this offseason. As the old saying goes, if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. Moreover, the Heat have shown time and time again that they’re willing to push a lot of chips to the center of the table if it means bolstering the team’s star quotient. Washington (CNN)A prominent Republican, Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, is still falsely describing what his own tax proposal says. President Joe Biden, meanwhile, is attacking Scott's proposal by misleadingly describing a key number from a think tank's analysis -- an analysis based on rough assumptions about what Scott might mean -- as if that number is much more definitive than the think tank says it is.The prolonged argument between Scott and Biden, which has flared once more this week, is centered on a brief item in a document Scott released in February. Getty Josh McDaniels of the Las Vegas Raiders. After having six first-round picks over the last three years, the Las Vegas Raiders aren’t set to draft until the third round this year. However, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and quarterback Derek Carr shut down those rumors before they got out of control. Luckily, that’s not the only path the team would have to move up in the draft. Getty Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson reacts during Game 3 of his team's first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks. Duncan Robinson had one of the best games of his pro career during the Miami Heat‘s playoff opener against the Hawks last week, scoring 27 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Since then, though, the sharpshooter has had little to no impact on the proceedings. Over the last three games, Robinson has averaged just 10 minutes per outing while scoring a grand total of nine points. That’s the kind of year it has been for the 28-year-old, who has been less and less of a factor for the Heat during the team’s biggest moments. This season, Robinson logged just 296 fourth-quarter minutes after racking up 484 in 2020-21 and 511 in 2019-20. Clearly, that’s not what the Heat had in mind when they signed him to a $90-million extension last summer. As such, it’s entirely possible that the club considers shopping him in the offseason. If they do, here’s one trade possibility that would net the club a versatile big...

Under the proposal he submitted to the legislature, the Hynes would go to the highest bidder and that money would go back to the community as affordable housing or investments in the Back Bay neighborhood. The buyer would have to promise to set aside space for meetings, recreation, and public use. Lawmakers need to approve the proposal before the convention center can go up for sale.
Musk has said he believes Twitter has incredible potential — and he believes that he can unlock it as its owner. "I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy," Musk wrote in a letter included in his SEC filing announcing the bid. Twitter, however, is attempting to block the purchase by adopting a poison pill maneuver. In a Friday press release, the company said it implemented the plan "following an unsolicited, non-binding proposal to acquire Twitter" — in this case, Musk's proposal. Under the poison pill plan, "If any person or group acquires beneficial ownership of at least 15% of Twitter’s outstanding common stock without the board’s approval, other shareholders will be allowed to purchase additional shares at a discount." The plan, which is set to expire on April 14, 2023, "will reduce the likelihood that any entity, person or group gains control of Twitter through open market accumulation without paying...

NEW York City lawmakers want to turn up the heat during fall and winter. The New York City Council is weighing a proposal to increase the minimum required temperatures in residential rental properties. 1The Big Apple could be a bit warmer this winterCredit: Getty Images Currently, landlords must keep multifamily buildings at least 68 degrees during the day and 62 degrees at night from October through May. The new proposal would lift the minimums to 70 and 66 degrees for day and night, respectively. Brooklyn Democrat Crystal Hudson brought the proposal to the council in March, and the council’s Committee on Housing and Buildings will debate the heat hike on Wednesday. The bill itself contains just 145 words, and it's not yet clear how the council will enforce a temperature bump. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser speaks at a news conference April 4, 2022. (WTOP/John Domen) D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says a $30 million budget proposal to eventually hire 4,000 police officers for the District is necessary to improve 911 response times and increase the presence of officers in neighborhoods across the city. The department’s current staffing level — about 3,500 sworn officers — is at its lowest level in two decades. “It is critical that we close the gap between 3,500 and put ourselves on a path to 4,000 officers,” Bowser said at a news conference Monday outside Dunbar High School in Northwest D.C. to promote her budget proposal. Bowser said that goal is also aimed at ensuring officers can close high-profile cases and respond to an uptick in protests and demonstrations that have snarled D.C. streets. In the short term, the proposed budget calls for hiring 347 officers in the next year and aiming to retain as many as possible of the 300 officers typically lost each year to attrition. The total $30 million package includes a panoply of incentives,...
Further details of British researcher Peter Daszak's role in facilitating risky coronavirus research in China have been revealed in a new report, outlining how his EcoHealth Alliance raked in millions in federal grants. Daszak's group, which bizarrely evolved from a save-the-manatees non-profit to a top champion of viral gain-of-function research as it chased federal funding, has long been at the center of questions about the origins of COVID-19. A lengthy new report in Vanity Fair, based on dozens of interviews and more than 100,000 leaked internal documents, details how EcoHealth operated in a world of 'murky grant agreements, flimsy oversight, and the pursuit of government funds for scientific advancement, in part by pitching research of steeply escalating risk.' The report does not offer conclusive evidence as to whether COVID leaked from experiments in a Wuhan lab that worked closely with EcoHealth, or was transmitted to humans by an animal in a 'natural spillover' event, as Daszak has long insisted. But it does outline the lengths to which Daszak -- and Dr. Anthony Fauci, whose agency helped fund his research -- went...
Joe Biden's $5.8 trillion Fiscal Year 2023 budget includes a lot of progressive agenda items like clean energy and climate initiatives, but will also alienate that branch of the Democratic Party by giving additional funding for law enforcement. The president announced on Monday afternoon his proposal for funding for next year, starting in October, which was sent off to Congress for review. Rarely does an executive budget make it through the legislative process without at least some changes. Biden was joined alongside newly sworn-in Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young for his remarks announcing the proposed budget. The proposal, according to President of Taxpayers Protection Alliance David Williams, is unrealistic. 'With spending AND tax increases, Biden's FY 2023 budget is not based in any sort of fiscal reality,' Williams told DailyMail.com. 'We live in a strange world when the President brags about a $1.4 trillion deficit. Continued increases in spending will add to inflationary pressures and the tax increases proposed in the budget will weaken investment and job growth.' 'Included in the budget is...
(CNN)Looking for ways to fund its spending plans, the White House is turning to a familiar target: billionaires and other super-wealthy Americans. As part of its budget proposal for fiscal year 2023, the Biden administration is pushing a measure that seeks to ensure that those worth more than $100 million pay a federal income tax rate of at least 20% on their income, including unrealized gains on assets -- which are not currently taxed.Under the present tax code, growth in the value of assets is taxed only at the time of sale -- and at lower rates than the highest income tax rates for investments held for at least a year. The rich often borrow against their holdings to build more wealth and fund their lifestyles, while avoiding adding to their annual income tax tab. And many have seen their portfolios swell in recent years as the stock market has boomed."Under current law, when an American worker earns a dollar of wages, that dollar is taxed as they earn it," according to a White House fact sheet released Saturday, which notes...
Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), has drawn a great deal of criticism from Democrats for his proposal to raise taxes on half of Americans — specifically, those with lower incomes. But some Republicans are calling Scott out as well, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. And Scott got some pushback from Fox News’ John Roberts as well during a March 27 appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” In his 11-point Rescue America Plan, Scott proposes, “All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently, over half of Americans pay no income tax.” "It's in the plan! It's in the plan. But Senator, hang on, it's not a Democratic talking point. It's in the plan" -- even Fox News's John Roberts can't believe it when Rick Scott lies about his own policy plan, which calls for a tax increase on a majority of Americanspic.twitter.com/sa4WgUBgyJ — Aaron Rupar (@Aaron Rupar) 1648390840 Roberts, not to be confused with the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative chief justice, quoted...
Joe Biden's 2023 budget proposal includes $32 billion to fight rising crime in the U.S., according to two White House officials, despite years-long calls from the progressive wing of his party to defund police. Massive crime spikes, particularly in cities, are one issue that could threaten Democrat's majority in the upcoming midterm elections. Republicans are effectively branding the issue as widely Democrat-caused due to calls to abolish police and rhetoric against law enforcement in general. The officials tell Axios that Biden's budget proposal would require $30 billion in new spending over the next decade to expand law enforcement and increase crime prevention. President Biden will detail on Monday his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2023 alongside newly sworn-in Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young. At the same time, his proposal is landing on Capitol Hill for review and approval. But the $20.6 billion for Justice Department (DOJ) discretionary spending on federal law enforcement, crime prevention and intervention is likely to be a tension point with far-left wings of the Democratic Party who have called...
The National Republican Senatorial Committee chair wants his party to increase taxes for more than 100 million Americans. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) claimed on Friday that he stands by his proposal to raise taxes on most Americans and to have Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid expire and be subject to renewal every five years. Moments later he called himself a guy fighting "for lower taxes every year" and complained that Congress isn't doing enough to preserve those entitlement programs. In an interview, Scott, the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, was asked by host Bob Harden about the response to the 11-point "Rescue America" proposal he released in late February. Scott noted that some in his party have opposed being candid with the voters about what they would do if they win a majority in the 2022 midterm elections, but that he is proud to stand by his proposals: The real world, we all get judged. In politics, people don't want to be judged. I'm fine. I'm fine with telling people, "This is what I'm gonna do." When I...
Californians are still letting out a collective groan when seeing the prices at their local gas station, but some relief could be on the way. Several California assembly members are expected to announce a proposal for a $400 gas rebate Thursday morning. The average price of unleaded gas in California went up by a cent Thursday from $5.77 to $5.78 a gallon, and is 10 cents more expensive than it was a week ago, according to the American Automobile Association. The national average price of a gallon of gas hit a peak of $4.33 on Friday before falling one cent and dropping to $4.28 Thursday — two cents cheaper than it was on Wednesday. Gas prices have continued to rise in the Golden State, despite the national average and crude oil prices on a downward. In San Francisco, the average went up two cents to $5.90 a gallon Thursday while prices increased from $5.77 to $5.79 in San Jose. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, prices rose from $5.81 to $5.82 in Oakland, $5.75 to $5.77 in Santa Cruz/Watsonville and stayed...
