And with the cost of groceries soaring by an inflation-busting 16 per cent, those Brussels sprouts will seem like a luxury. But as you think twice before turning on the fairy lights – let alone any heating – due to record-high energy bills, consider how the spirit of Christmas is one of the few things that still remains free. By following our tips on how to make your own decorations – everything from festive cards to the baubles for a tree – you can still share in the magic of Christmas without breaking the bank. CHRISTMAS is a wonderful, fun time of year but it can also play absolute havoc with your health. There are already winter colds circulating and soon we will be overindulging with food and booze, leaving us with gut issues. 3Echinacea has been a popular herbal remedy for colds and has helped people strengthen their immune systems for centuries And if that wasn’t enough, winter allergies will shortly raise their ugly heads. How good do you think you are at spotting when someone is lying? I’ve just finished jury duty and the case we tried turned, at least in part, on the credibility of the defendant, a middle-aged man caught in an online forum chatting up a girl, who said she was 13 years old. In fact, it turned out that the person he was pressuring to send him photos wasn’t an underage girl but a police officer, who recorded the whole conversation. The prosecution had to prove that he believed the person he was communicating with was underage and that he was chatting to her for sexual purposes. His defence was that he was bored, suspected that the person he was communicating with was not a girl and he was simply doing it to be provocative. When he took the stand and told his story, did he look as if he was telling the truth — or was he lying? You might think you can tell, but in fact research shows that most of us are pretty terrible at working out...

Cholesterol has been demonised over the years for its damaging effect on our cardiovascular health — but it’s not all bad: in fact, it plays such an important role in bodily processes that, without it, you simply wouldn’t exist. For instance, our cell walls are made from cholesterol. It is also needed to produce vitamin D and hormones, and it forms a key part of bile acids, without which we couldn’t digest fats. So to say we would fall apart without cholesterol is no exaggeration. In recent years our understanding about cholesterol — and how to tackle it — has shifted, sometimes quite significantly. For a start, we used to think that our diet was a major contributor, but now we know almost 80 per cent of cholesterol is, in fact, made in the body — in the liver. So this means that foods such as eggs, which are naturally rich in cholesterol, are back on the menu for most people, a good thing as they’re a powerhouse of nutrients. Cholesterol has been demonised over the years for its damaging...

Women who claim they're regularly mistaken for being much younger than they really are have shared their skin and lifestyle secrets - including a mother who is often 'mistaken for her son's girlfriend'. From diet to good genes, this group of youthful-looking females, ranging from their 30s to their 70s, claim that others often find it hard to figure out their true ages. Not only that, but many of them say that refusing to 'act' old is another factor in looking and feeling young, more so than resorting to costmetic treatments like Botox.  A woman in her 70s shimmied into a sequined LBD for a photo shoot, while a 60-year-old says she walks miles a day with her dogs after reinventing herself during lockdown made her feel 'much younger than she is'.  Theresa Castleman from the US is a 57-year-old grandmother but she doesn't look it - and praises her 'good genes' for her smooth skin RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Am I wrong to tell my nine-year-old she's pretty every day?... Congress decimated that amount as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, making it so even a single transaction worth $600 will cause users to file the federal Form 1099-k. Spencer Platt/Getty Veterans and others carry a large American Flag while marching in the nation's largest Veterans Day Parade in New York City on November 11, 2016 in New York City. As the nation celebrates our 17 million living veterans, it is also important to know that the chance these heroes will end their own lives prematurely is still higher than among civilians. Among veterans with PTSD, suicide is the fourth most common cause of death. Among veterans younger than 35, it’s second. Over the past decade, suicide rates have also risen among members of the military. For most years since 2017, rates for active-duty service members have been above those of civilians. The same is true for National Guard service members since 2015 and for veterans for the past decade. I’m a researcher who studies risk and resilience in military and veteran families. I can tell you that the single most common stressor for those who attempt or complete suicide is a serious relationship difficulty with an intimate partner or someone else within the past year....

On Friday, we honor our nation’s veterans, a practice that goes back more than a hundred years to the end of the first world war. Politicians from Baltimore to Honolulu will make will make rousing speeches, as generations of politicians have done before them. As a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I’m grateful that they value our service, but I think we can do better than empty rhetoric. When the U.S. government ended the draft in 1973 and adopted the all-volunteer force military model, it effectively segregated the armed forces from the rest of the country. Today, veterans account for only 7% of the U.S. adult population, meaning most Americans probably don’t know anyone with military experience. This can result in misconceptions about service life, such as Tom Brady’s recent offhand comment comparing a football season to a combat deployment. War is now something that happens to other people. There are roughly 19 million veterans alive today, and while hardly any have played in the NFL, 78% have served in combat, from World War II to Iraq....

Personally I am not a fan of cutting anything entirely from your diet — it’s rarely warranted medically and can leave you at risk of nutrition shortfalls. But plenty of the people I see in clinic have chosen at one stage or another to cut one staple out of their diets: bread. The low-carb movement, associations with weight gain and, of course, the gluten it contains have helped move bread to the dietary equivalent of the naughty step in many people’s eyes. But bread can be a convenient source of nutrients and, let’s face it, a nice slice of freshly baked bread is one of life’s pleasures — and I don’t want to start denying people those. Radio host Howard Stern expressed his shock over Georgia Senate hopeful Herschel Walker’s chances of winning Tuesday’s midterm elections. “Everyone’s just feeling really empowered to say whatever dumb fucking thing is on their brain. And then they go, ‘Oh, come on — Come on man,'” Stern began, discussing the recent string of anti-Semitic headlines. “‘Free speech. Free speech,'” co-host Robin Quivers echoed. “‘Heil Hitler. Now let’s move on. Hitler threw the Jews in the ovens. Leave me alone. I just wanna say things like that. Just want — I just wanna — I wanna say what I have to say,'” Stern joked. The SiriusXM host turned the discussion towards Tuesday’s midterm elections and the attitude many candidates have adopted where they can say anything under the guise of free speech. “Some of these candidates that people are actually — fucking Herschel Walker. Holy fuck. They’re saying he’s gonna win in Georgia,” Stern said. “Are you fucking dummies? There’s gonna be — they, you know — and they always talk about another Civil War. I think there is gonna be one....

SCIENTISTS have discovered how you can shed pounds while boozing. Until now, it's been assumed by experts that drinking puts on weight. 1Drinkers should munch on lean protein sources such as lean red meat, chicken, fish, seafood to avoid weight gain.Credit: Getty But as long as you nosh on nuts and other healthy bar snacks, you can actually lose weight, experts have said. An Australian study found that drinkers who opted for high-protein, lean foods consumed fewer calories overall than people who abstain from drinking entirely. This is because protein has a satiating effect, so people eat less. Lead author of the study, Amanda Grech, of The University of Sydney, said: “It’s known alcohol increases appetite, particularly for savoury food, a phenomenon that’s known as the ‘aperitif effect." When I realised my husband Thomas, an NHS GP, was going to be working on the Covid-19 frontline I wanted to do everything that I could to help support his immune system.  We were both working long hours, and while I’m far from being a domestic goddess — I’m not a big cook at home — I knew that Thomas would be incredibly vulnerable because of his work. So after reading as much scientific literature as I could lay my hands on, I came up with a plan to make immune-strengthening changes to our lifestyle that were easy enough to keep up for the long haul.  This involved quick and simple plantpowered and fibre-filled meals such as stirfry, vegetable lasagne and tasty soup.   The intensity of working on the frontline means that medics often end up eating canteen food or takeaways. While Thomas was still having these, he started adding lentils to his Indian curry or a bag of mixed salad on top of a pizza, and he finished every meal with a piece of fruit and small handful of my...
When people start coughing and sneezing around us, it may be tempting to reach for those ‘super’ immune-boosting supplements. But, in truth, they don’t do a whole lot for you. Instead, investing time in nurturing the trillion of microbes – that is the bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites – which live in your gut, is the best science-backed line of defence. The fact is that our immunity is powered by the gut, and what our gut needs to function at its best is a diverse diet alongside three other key pillars: sleep, movement and less stress. In yesterday’s Daily Mail, I explained the vital role the colony of gut microbes plays in shoring up the immune system and how eating a diverse plant-based diet – though not necessarily plants-only – is the best way to support them. The fact is that our immunity is powered by the gut, and what our gut needs to function at its best is a diverse diet alongside three other key pillars: sleep, movement and less stress Today, my focus is on sleep and stress....

Putting one foot in front of the other and hitting your 10k steps really does do wonders for your wellbeing, but now power walking is in the spotlight. 5Power walking does wonders for your physical and mental wellbeingCredit: Getty Images New research claims that walking fast is the key to living longer – focusing on the pace and power of your steps, not just the number you rack up. The study, published in two medical journals, found walking with intensity reduces numerous major health concerns, from dementia, heart disease and cancer to premature death. Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Leicester have discovered power walkers have a life expectancy up to 20 years higher than slow walkers. The NHS also credits power walking with helping slash depression, burn calories and reduce obesity (depending on your speed, you can burn up to 400 calories per 30 minutes!) – and a brisk 10-minute daily...

Anyone who reads my column knows I am a big fan of planned sex (for lots of long-term couples, sex simply wouldn't happen unless they make time for it.) But there are many reasons why your sex life will benefit from having more spontaneous sex, too. Doing it right there, right then, reminds you of what sex was like at the heady start. Adding danger gets your heart thumping and causes those (long dried up) sex and love hormones to come flooding back. Doing it when the urge strikes is often the most satisfying time. Delaying by mere seconds usually means the moment has passed, the excitement drains – and opportunity is lost. Having any kind of risky sex pushes you out of your comfort zones - one of the few known ways to keep us interested in sex when we're forced to do it with the same person repeatedly. Seriously, how exciting is sex in your bedroom, just before sleep, ever going to be when it's the thousandth time you've done it? Tracey Cox says spontaneity is usually lacking...
Skynesher | E+ | Getty Images As inflation has pushed the cost of living higher, those eligible for Social Security retirement benefits may be tempted to claim benefits sooner than they had planned. Social Security beneficiaries stand to get a record 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment in 2023 that will help them contend with higher costs. But the COLA adjustment alone is not reason to claim. Your benefits will still be adjusted for that increase, whether you claim now or later, experts say. But you should consider the amount of benefits you may receive based on your age. For most people approaching retirement now, age 67 is when they will receive their full benefits based on their earnings history. If they delay up to age 70, their monthly checks will be even bigger.
