Shortly thereafter, police were called to the residence, and found 57-year-old Matthews dead and his 35-year-old girlfriend seriously injured, having been stabbed multiple times. The man who went on a shooting spree targeting homeless populations in Washington DC and New York City last march has been indicted on 17 charges including first-degree murder, federal officials said. The indictment charges Gerard Brevard III with “aggravating circumstances,” finding that the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel. If aggravating circumstances are found by a jury at trial, Brevard faces a maximum of life imprisonment without the possibility of release on the murder charge. The indictment only charges offenses committed in Washington, D.C. Brevard set out on the biased attacks March 3, when he assaulted the first victim with a gun in an effort to kill him on the 1100 block of New York Avenue in Washington DC, according to the indictment returned by a grand jury in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and local authorities. On Tuesday, March 8, police responded to the 1700 block of H Street, where another man had been shot. He, too, was hospitalized with serious and permanent injuries, authorities said. The next day, Brevard shot and stabbed Morgan Holmes, 54, killing him.  Brevard...

CAVEMEN carried out medical amputations more than 30,000 years ago — and the patients survived, scientists have discovered. The prehistoric procedures were tens of thousands of years before the discovery of antiseptics — normally a must to fight off post-surgery infections usually leading to death. 3The remains, which have been dated to 31,000 years old, mark the oldest evidence for amputation yet discovered 3The 'clean sloping cut' on the remains excludes the accidental loss of a foot, say experts 3Artist's impression issued of an individual who had their lower left leg amputated as a child and survived into early adulthood Experts found the skeleton in a cave in Borneo of a Stone Age human male who had his left foot surgically removed — and lived around another ten years. The patient is believed to have been aged around 11 when his foot was cut off. A “clean sloping cut” excludes an accident, experts said. They reckon this “remarkable” find is the first example of a complex operation and “rewrites history of human medical knowledge”. Amputations require detailed understanding of human...
In the wake of 9/11, an immediate second wave of terrorism gripped America via a series of letters, sent through the United States Postal Service, that contained anthrax, resulting in five deaths and 17 additional infections. The first of those victims, photojournalist Bob Stevens of Boca Raton, Florida, contracted the disease on Oct. 4, 2001. Six years, nine months and 19 days later, the FBI broadcast to the public the name of the person they believed was the culprit: Bruce Edwards Ivins, a senior researcher at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), whose RMR-1029 flask was determined to contain anthrax spores that were genetically linked to those mailed throughout the country. In what turned out to be one of the largest and most expensive investigations in FBI history, an answer was finally attained—even if, days before the bureau’s press-conference announcement on Aug. 6, 2008, Ivins had taken his own life. The Anthrax Attacks: In the Shadow of 9/11 is not, however, a clear-cut tale. Premiering on Netflix on Sept. 8, Dan Krauss’ documentary is a...
The use of no-knock searches by police appears to have declined sharply across Minnesota after a Minneapolis officer fatally shot 22-year-old Amir Locke during a raid in February, though stark racial disparities remain in who law enforcement targets. New state data says police and sheriffs carried out an average of 14 no-knock entries each month between September and the end of January. But that dipped significantly between February — when Locke was killed — and the end of April.  Law enforcement across the state reported carrying out just eight total no-knock raids in nearly three months of data following Locke’s killing on Feb. 2, yet four of the nine people targeted in the raids were Black. Locke was also Black. No knock warrants carried out in Minnesota by month, Sept. 2021-April 2022 Note: Of 12 no-knock raids reported to have been carried out in February, 10 were carried out on or before Feb. 2, the day Locke was killed. Because law enforcement agencies have three months to report, data are only complete through April. Source: Minnesota Secretary of State Much...

The accused assassin of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reportedly carried out a “test shooting” at a building before ending up at the rally where the former prime minister was shot and killed with a homemade gun. CNN’s Matthew Chance, reporting from Nara, Japan, said he had been to the building, which had tarp up to cover damages. Chance said the door read “Unification Church,” a South Korean church that may be tied to Abe’s assassination, though this has not been confirmed by police. Police arrested 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami after the shooting, and Chance reported that he has confessed and cooperated with authorities, but expressed no regret over the shooting. Police said the killing is tied to an organization Yamagami took issue with, but they would not identify the specific organization, nor would they confirm the site of the “test shooting” was tied to the Unification Church. “He believed, rightly or wrongly, that the former Japanese prime minister was linked in some way to that religious organization,” Chance reported, adding police would not allow him or his crew to enter...

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Explosions were heard in the Syrian capital Friday night, which Syrian media said were the result of a new Israeli attack near Damascus. State-run news agency SANA said Syrian air defenses confronted “hostile targets” in the skies in the Damascus countryside, a reference to Israel which has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in war-torn Syria over the past few years. The pro-government Cham FM said the Isreali attack resulted in a fire near Damascus International Airport, leading to the postponement of two flights. There was no comment from Israel, which rarely confirms its activities inside Syria. It says it targets bases of Iran-allied militias, such as Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group that has fighters deployed in Syria and is fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government forces, and arms shipments believed to be bound for the militias. The last attack was on May 13, when Israeli missiles struck the town of Masyaf in the Hama countryside, killing five people, according to Syrian state media. Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment a pair of Russian tanks suffered a direct hit from bombs stealthily dropped from a Ukrainian drone. Expertly flown by an operator believed to be from Ukraine's 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion, the drone swooped above two Russian infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) at an estimated height of around 400ft, before letting loose its payload. Five seconds later, the anti-armour grenades detonated and engulfed the IFVs in a pair of huge fireballs. Ukraine's armed forces have used drones to great effect amid the Russian invasion, expertly conducting small-scale airstrikes and using drone-mounted cameras to analyse Russian troop movements to prepare ambushes. It is unclear where the drone strike took place, though Radio Liberty reported in February that the 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion was deployed in the Donbas region of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, where fighting has intensified amid a major Russian offensive. It comes as the Land Forces of Ukraine today reported an estimated 23,000 Russian soldiers have been killed thus far in just nine weeks of war. A Russian armoured vehicle is seen centre seconds...

Emmanuel Macron was lambasted by Ukraine last night after he refused to back Joe Biden's accusations of genocide at the hands of Russian forces. The US President used the term in a speech to voters on Tuesday. But French president Mr Macron, who has tried to position himself as a conduit to Vladimir Putin, warned Western leaders to be careful with their language.  He then angered Kyiv by suggesting the mass slaughter of civilians could not be considered genocide because 'the Ukrainians and Russians are brothers'. Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian foreign ministry, said Mr Macron's 'unwillingness to recognise the genocide of Ukrainians, after all the outspoken statements of [the] Russian leadership and criminal actions of [the] Russian military, is disappointing'. He continued: '''Brotherly'' people don't kill children, don't shoot civilians, don't rape women, don't mutilate the elderly, and don't destroy the homes of other ''brotherly'' people.'  French president Emmanuel Macron (pictured), who has tried to position himself as a conduit to Vladimir Putin, warned Western leaders to be careful with their language over use of the term...
BANGKOK (AP) — Celebrations of Thingyan, Myanmar’s holiday marking the traditional new year, were uncharacteristically quiet Wednesday, as the violent struggle for power between the military government and its opponents cast a shadow over the usual merrymaking involving the playful splashing of water. Opponents of military rule, who have widespread support, urged a boycott of the celebrations organized by the government. The armed wing of the resistance reinforced that call by warning that it might carry out bombings targeting security forces in Yangon, the country’s biggest city. In 2010, at least 10 people were killed by bombs in an attack the military government then in charge blamed on a fringe opposition group. But no major incidents had been reported by nightfall on Wednesday, the first day of the holiday. Small nonviolent protests, some online, were carried out in several spots around the country against the army’s seizure of power last year. People usually celebrate the hot season holiday by pouring, spraying and splashing water in gatherings large and small. Many who have moved to cities for work return to...

Two US soldiers suffered minor injuries after a rocket strike on a base in eastern Syria - an attack which a war monitor and a tribal source said was carried out by Iran-backed militias.  A pair of shells fell on the base in Green Village, Syria, on Thursday. The base is used to train local forces to fight against what remains of the Islamic State. One of the soldiers was treated for a traumatic brain injury and the second was treated for minor injuries, according to a since-deleted tweet from the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Levant, which oversees the U.S. led forces in the region. An anonymous American official told the Reuters that both soldiers have been cleared and returned to duty. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, though its comes amidst years of continued violence against U.S. forces by Iranian-backed militias.  A tribal source in the area said several rockets were fired by an Iran-backed militia, and two landed in the area of al Omar oil field where U.S. forces are based in Deir al-Zor province, near...
Shocking CCTV footage captures the moment a British ambulance donated from Wales was shelled by Russian troops in Ukraine.  The ambulance travelled more than 2,000 miles to the city of Mikolayev to help deliver vital emergency healthcare amid the Russian invasion. Dr Mateo Szmidt, an emergency medicine consultant at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, believes it was one of two vehicles sent from Wales in March.   Reposting CCTV footage of the attack on his Instagram page the doctor said: 'I am sad and angry as this just shows how the Russians have no conscience about attacking civilian sites. 'Our 1st ambulance that made it all the way to Mikolayev has been shelled at. I am waiting to hear if our ambulance is salvageable. Will keep you posted.' No one was in the vehicle when it was struck by the missile. The footage was also shared by Medical Aid Ukraine which said 18 ambulances are being destroyed in the country every day.  Dr Szmidt has discovered the engine is still working and the inside is largely undamaged. The ambulance travelled...
ROME—It is very likely that Pope Francis is dreading this week. Steady criticism for his seeming unwillingness to blame Russia for the war in Ukraine—but rather blame the West for supplying weapons that keep the war going—has been gaining steam. Even his prayer service in Rome Friday night as for Ukraine and Russia, not just for the victims of the now month-old war. But things are very likely going to get even more uncomfortable for the ailing pontiff as 30 indigenous elders from Canada—among them victims of horrific abuse at the hands of Canadian Catholics—will hold a series of meetings in which each one will demand he apologize for the atrocities of the Church, including the burial of 215 children on Catholic grounds. “We expect that these private encounters will allow the Holy Father to meaningfully address both the ongoing trauma and legacy of suffering faced by Indigenous Peoples to this day,” the Canadian Bishops Conference said in a statement. That trauma includes what the group says is “the role of the Catholic Church in the residential school system, which...

Police investigating a series of murders in New York City have confirmed that the horrific crimes are linked to a similar murder spree in Washington D.C. The chilling crimes began March 3 when the Metropolitan Police Department of D.C. responded to a call around 4 a.m. and discovered that a homeless man had sustained a gunshot wound. He was treated at a hospital and survived the injuries. Five days later, another person was found shot in the early hours of the morning and survived. The following day, a similar attack proved fatal. Around 3 a.m. on March 9, responders discovered a body inside a burning tent northeast of the city’s center. After extinguishing the flames, investigators discovered that the person, formerly homeless, had been shot and stabbed. The D.C. police confirmed that all three victims had been experiencing homelessness—and all three had been targeted by the same suspect. The murder spree then took an escalating turn for the worse when three more homeless people were attacked over the weekend. This time, the victims were in New York City....

The state-run Saudi Press Agency announced the executions and confirmed that those included were convicted of various crimes such as the murdering of innocent men, women and children. A statement said: "The kingdom will continue to take a strict and unwavering stance against terrorism and extremist...
