by Christian Wade   Maritime groups are criticizing New England governors for urging the Biden administration to lift federal restrictions banning foreign vessels in domestic waters in response to a regional energy crunch. In a letter to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in July, the chief executives called for a blanket waiver from the Jones Act, which requires cargo shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on American owned and operated ships. The leaders, who included Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, Maine Gov. Janet Mills and Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, said the nearly century-old maritime rules are preventing liquified natural gas shipments from reaching the region to help ease a looming shortage of fuel this winter. “The insecurity of global natural gas markets in 2022 exacerbates the long-standing ramifications of the restriction and undermines reliability,” they wrote in the letter. But, the effort faces pushback from maritime groups who say a waiver would cost jobs and threaten national security, while doing little to ease the regional energy crisis. In a letter to the governors, the American Maritime Partnership said that claims the Jones Act is...
Jay-Z met with Bills quarterback Josh Allen Thursday night after Buffalo's 24-10 win over the Patriots, with the rap mogul taking in the game with New England owner Robert Kraft earlier in the night. While Jay-Z's words to the young quarterback can't be made out from a video of the short encounter, Allen can be heard saying 'appreciate it, thank you' before the pair go their separate ways. And it wasn't the only time during the night that the Roc Nation founder brushed shoulders with an NFL figure. Jay-Z was spotted in Kraft's suite during the game, and the gathering comes after previous reports of the rapper's interest in buying the Commanders with Jeff Bezos. Bezos and the musician were spotted getting dinner together in November after TMZ reported that a joint bid between the 52-year-old Shawn Carter and the 58-year-old Amazon founder was 'on the table.'  Robert Kraft (left) and Jay-Z were spotted in the owner's box at Gillette Stadium on Thursday Josh Allen and Jay-Z briefly met after Bills' 24-10 win over the Patriots on Thursday night Jay-Z...

Cases are up six per cent on last week, when 972,000 Brits tested positive. The data shows that in England, one in 60 people currently have the bug. In Wales this is one in 75 people and the experts said figures released today includes...

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft lent one of the team's two planes to University of Virginia football players attending the funerals of teammates who were killed in an on-campus shooting earlier this month. Teammates D'Sean Perry, Devin Chandler, and Lavel Davis Jr. were murdered on November 13 aboard a charter bus as they returned to campus after traveling to Washington, where their class attended a play.  Authorities have said that Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a UVA student and former member of the football team who was on the trip, began shooting students on the bus as it pulled to a stop at a campus parking garage. Two other students were wounded, including football player Mike Hollins. Perry's funeral was held Saturday in Miami, while Chandler's was in Virginia Beach on Sunday, according to reports. Services for Davis will be held in South Carolina on Wednesday. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL will look a little different from 2023. What changes will be made to base size? From 2023, bases will increase in size from fifteen to eighteen inches square. The primary aim of this change is to reduce the risk of injuries to first basemen from an incoming base runner. The league also stated that the four and a half inch reduction in distance between bases (excluding home plate) may "have a modest impact on stolen-base success rate," including more attempts. John Eliot Preaching to the Indians, Gift of Martha J. Fleischman and Barbara G. Fleischman, 1999, The Met The English believed God communicated through plague – and viewed the epidemic which decimated Algonquian territory between 1616-19 as a sign. The Europeans who began colonising North America in the early 17th century steadfastly believed that God communicated his wrath through plague. They brought this conviction with them – as well as deadly disease itself. Plague brought by early European settlers decimated Indigenous populations during an epidemic in 1616-19 in what is now southern New England. Upwards of 90% of the Indigenous population died in the years leading up to the arrival of the Mayflower in November 1620. It’s still unclear what the disease behind the epidemic actually was. But this was the first of many plagues that swept through Algonquian territory – Algonquian being the linguistic term used to describe an array of Indigenous peoples stretching, among other places, along the northeastern seaboard of what is now the US. Upon review of the film, Chicago Bears safety Jaquan Brisker is convinced New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was trying to hit him below the belt during Monday’s game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. That’s because four plays before Brisker was briefly knocked out of the Bears’ 33-14 victory after Jones kicked him in the groin while sliding, the quarterback attempted to trip him at the end of another slide. Jones kicked Brisker with his right foot, lifting his leg high into the air at the end of a slide as Brisker attempted to jump over him and avoid contact on the second snap of the second quarter. Jones gained 8 yards on the play, beginning his slide at the Bears 37-yard line. As he approached the 35, Jones lifted his leg and struck Brisker, who fortunately needed only one snap to regroup on the sideline before reentering the game. Justin Fields’ fifth touchdown pass of the season was another one he didn’t fully see. It was a simple concept, a quick-hit screen left designed to get Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert moving behind a wall of blockers. But immediately after the snap, New England Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise darted into the passing lane, disrupting Fields’ vision and timing. Alertly, Fields double-clutched, went into second baseman mode with his arm slot and steered his throw around Wise’s left side. “We work on that in practice,” Fields said, “just maneuvering the screens around that D-end.” It was a crafty throw followed by an easy catch. Off Herbert went. Yet as he went, Fields was face down on the Gillette Stadium turf, having been smushed between Wise and outside linebacker Matthew Judon and absorbing a nasty hit that left him with a welt above his left eye. Fields never saw Herbert’s 25-yard sprint to the end zone. Nor did he even realize the running back had caught the pass. “I got smacked on that play,” Fields said. “I didn’t know...

Heating oil suppliers in the Northeast and New England have begun rationing the key fuel ahead of winter, after stockpiles dropped to a third of their normal levels. Concerns are rising that supply shortages and soaring prices will leave families in the cold this winter, particularly in New England, which is more reliant on heating oil than other parts of the country. Chris Herb, president of the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, told Bloomberg recently that heating oil wholesalers are beginning to limit allocations for retail suppliers. The rationing measures, intended to prevent panic buying and hoarding, are in turn being imposed on consumers, limiting the amount of heating oil they can purchase, said Herb.  Heating oil suppliers in the Northeast and New England have begun rationing the key fuel ahead of winter. Rhamondre Stevenson has been running well and with Damien Harris backfrom a hamstring injury, the Patriots had a second quality back. But they never got going. New England went three-and-punt on its first two...
In the press box at Gillette Stadium before Monday night’s game against the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles told reporters what he saw as the next step for his young team. “For the age of our team, there have been a lot of games where we’re knocking on the door to win games,” Poles said. “The next step is learning how to finish.” Nearly five hours later, the Bears granted his wish, scoring 23 unanswered points from late in the second quarter into the fourth quarter to pull off a 33-14 victory over the Patriots. The game had some historical significance beyond the Bears beating the Patriots for the first time since 2000 and the first time ever in New England. It prevented Patriots coach Bill Belichick from passing Bears founder George Halas for sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list, for a week at least. But the significance of the game for this season was that Justin Fields led the offense to 390 yards — including 243 on the ground — and...

Obama, 61, is a Bears fan and joined the brothers for the first quarter of Monday's game against the Patriots. 'Be honest, who was the better guest?' Obama laughed and then responded: 'Both of you guys were gentlemen. There was some silverware missing after that visit but we couldn't trace it back to you. 'We had a great...

His play helped the Bears overcome a strong showing by Patriots rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe, who led touchdown drives on his first two series after replacing starter Mac Jones. The Patriots turned to Zappe when Jones, who was coming back from a three-game absence due to an ankle injury, threw an interception to Bears safety Jaquan Brisker on their third drive. Zappe then led a 55-yard drive,...

Patrick went into the medical tent after the Bears’ second drive and came out limping a few minutes later. He left the field on a cart, and the Bears announced he was doubtful to return with a toe injury. The Bears shook up their offensive line to open the game, moving Patrick from left guard to center. Veteran Michael Schofield started at left guard, and Sam Mustipher, who had been starting at center, went to the bench. With Patrick out, Mustipher played center on the Bears’ third drive. Matt Eberflus dropped enough hints during the Bears’ review of the first six games that it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were to make a change on the offensive line. The most likely scenario is Michael Schofield taking over at left guard with Lucas Patrick sliding over to center and Sam Mustipher heading to the sideline. There are also questions about the team’s punt returner duties. Special teams coordinator Richard Hightower declined to say Friday whether Velus Jones Jr. would retain his job. But Hightower made it clear an in-season competition has become necessary, listing receiver Dante Pettis, defensive back Josh Blackwell and, yes, even safety Eddie Jackson as candidates to jump in. 5 things to watch in the Bears’ ‘Monday Night Football’ game...
The Chicago Bears play their second prime-time game in two weeks when they face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on “Monday Night Football.” The Bears (2-4) hope 10 days of rest and preparation will help them as they try to bounce back from an ugly 12-7 loss to the Washington Commanders in a Thursday night game. As kickoff approaches against the Patriots (3-3), here’s our snapshot look at the game. 1. Player in the spotlight Mac Jones (or Bailey Zappe) Jones returned to practice this week after suffering a high left ankle sprain on Sept. 25, and the second-year quarterback is listed as questionable to play Monday. After completing 64 of 97 passes for 786 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions in the first three weeks, Jones missed the next three games with the injury. Brian Hoyer started in Week 4 but suffered a concussion, paving the way for rookie fourth-rounder Zappe to make his debut. Over two-plus games, Zappe completed 51 of 70 passes for 596 yards with four touchdowns and an interception, a strong showing...
Matt Eberflus dropped enough hints during the Chicago Bears’ review of the first six games that it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were to make a change on the offensive line against the New England Patriots on Monday night at Gillette Stadium. The most likely scenario is Michael Schofield taking over at left guard with Lucas Patrick sliding over to center and Sam Mustipher heading to the sideline. If so, it will be the fourth lineup the Bears have used on the line in seven games with the team needing to plug a hole while Cody Whitehair is on injured reserve with a sprained MCL in his right knee. Whitehair is sidelined for at least two more games, and the soonest he could return is Nov. 6 against the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field. Despite the ongoing shuffling, the Bears have run the ball extremely well, ranking second in yards per game (170.8) and seventh in yards per carry (5.2) — numbers boosted by Justin Fields, who trails only Jalen Hurst of the Philadelphia Eagles in rushing yards by...
N’Keal Harry’s restart in the NFL took months longer than originally planned because of an ankle injury, but it fittingly could come this week against his former team. The Chicago Bears wide receiver practiced in full all week leading up to Monday night’s game in Foxborough, Mass., against the New England Patriots, the team that drafted Harry in the first round in 2019. Harry was cleared to play in Week 6 against the Washington Commanders, but without a full week of practice, the Bears held him out. Coach Matt Eberflus wouldn’t say Saturday whether Harry will get an opportunity against the Patriots, but Harry said he’s comfortable in the offense and ready to go physically if the Bears want him to play. “I’m trying not to get too caught up in it being the Patriots and it being my former team,” Harry said. “I’m obviously excited, excited to see some of my guys.” After Harry totaled 57 catches for 598 yards and four touchdowns over three seasons with the Patriots, they traded him to the Bears this summer for a...
Four-times winners the United States will open their World Cup title defense against Vietnam in New Zealand next year after being grouped with the Asian nation, the Netherlands and a playoff winner at Saturday's draw in Auckland. Vlatko Andonovski's side go into the tournament as the favorites having won the previous two, at France 2019 and Canada 2015, but they will face tough competition from the likes of England, having recently lost to them in a friendly at Wembley. The draw has placed the USWNT and England on opposite sides of the draw, meaning there could be a blockbuster showdown between the two sides in the final. These "shoes" are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do. A 24-year-old African penguin at the New England Aquarium in Boston is putting that statement to the test after receiving customized footwear to help her walk properly.  Beach Donkey developed a foot condition two years after she hatched at the aquarium on April 21, 1998, NEA reports. The penguin was diagnosed with pododermatitis, also known as bumblefoot, due to large calluses that had developed on her feet. The condition is common among penguins both in the wild and in captivity, the aquarium says. If left untreated, it could lead to infections of the bone.  So, staff at NEA immediately started developing a care plan for Beach Donkey before the condition worsened. The result was not only something practical, but fashionable. “Training an animal to be comfortable with this level of interaction and treatment requires very small steps and a positive trainer-animal relationship,” said Eric Fox, the Aquarium’s manager of penguins. “Nuanced understanding of each individual penguin and what they find reinforcing is crucial to a trainer’s success and is essential...
Getty Jakobi Meyers, Patriots WR Since he was signed as an undrafted free agent, Jakobi Meyers has improved as much as any player within the New England Patriots organization. After going undrafted, Meyers said he had a few teams make him an offer. In an episode of Elite Eatz from former Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy, Meyers revealed it was the presence of first-round pick N’Keal Harry that motivated him to pick New England. Meyers and Harry weren’t friends yet, though they would become friends as teammates. Meyers said he chose to sign with the Patriots simply to prove he could compete and ultimately outperform a receiver selected in the first round. “I’m going to go in there and show them I could play with a first-rounder,” Meyers said. After a Week 6 loss to the Washington Commanders, the Chicago Bears will be back in front of a national audience when they play the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football.” Barring an unforeseen flex game, this will be the Bears’ final prime-time game of the season and another chance to show progress. In the lead-up to Monday night’s game, here are a dozen eye-catching facts and figures. 46-10 Bears-Patriots. Jan. 26, 1986. You know what it is. 324 Career coaching victories for Bill Belichick, including the postseason, during his 23 seasons with the Patriots and six with the Cleveland Browns. The Patriots’ 38-15 victory over the Browns on Sunday moved Belichick into a tie for second on the NFL’s all-time wins list with Bears legend George Halas. Don Shula holds the all-time victories record — regular season plus playoffs — with 347. Halas still holds the distinction of winning the most regular-season games with one franchise with 318. Belichick has won 257 regular-season games with the Patriots. 16 Games started by Justin Fields — 10 as a rookie...
Residents in New England cities are facing rolling blackouts this winter if temperatures drop for a prolonged cold snap because of lower fuel supplies. The region relies on natural-gas imports to bridge the gaps during the winter but is now having to compete with European countries for shipments of liquefied gas. Russia’s halt of most pipeline gas to the continent has ramped up the price and demand for natural gas across the globe. Both Europe and the US are now scrambling to import more LNG, which could send gas prices skyrocketing next winter - despite America being one of the top importers in the world.  New England does not import American LNG because the Jones Act bans it from being shipped internally, forcing them to buy from outside the US. Several cold spells in the Northeast could reduce the amount of gas available to generate electricity, as more of it is burned to heat homes in the plummeting temperatures. ISO New England Inc, the region’s power-grid operator, have wanted that an extremely cold winter could result in the need for...
Getty Denver Broncos fans cheer for their team at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. For Colorado sports fans, it’s usually pretty exciting to see a homegrown product playing professionally in the Centennial State. That’s exactly what has happened to former Chatfield High School star Dalton Keene. This week, Denver picked up the former New England Patriot and Philadelphia Eagle tight end to their practice squad. Keene grew up in Littleton where he was an All-State senior for Chatfield. During his prep days, Dalton played running back and middle linebacker. He also ran for the track team. During his senior season he finished with 1,175 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns. Keene’s Colorado prep success led him to accepting an offer to play at Virginia Tech. Keene played for the Hokies as a true freshman catching 10 passes for 167 yards that year. A big junior season would lead him to make the decision of foregoing his final year of collegiate eligibility and entering the 2020 NFL Draft. Dalton was selected as the third round’s 101st pick...
