ARGENTINA are in the World Cup again - and are, of course, one of the favourites. And their anthem is one of the most iconic at football's biggest tournament and Lionel Messi is hoping to finally win the big one to round off his stellar career. 3 Argentina singing the national anthem prior to their match against Saudi ArabiaCredit: Getty Why is the Argentina national anthem shortened? The first Argentinian anthem was composed as early as 1810, before it was adopted as the official song three years later following the Revolution. Its lyrics were written by the Buenos Aires-born Vicente Lopez y Planes, whilst the music was composed by a Spaniard, Blas Parera. There is a long, anti-Spain section in the middle of the piece which has been omitted since 1924 - and the whole piece is extremely long. As a result, in the Olympics, rugby games and at the World Cup, only the instrumental introduction (which lasts 1 minute 6 seconds) is played. 3 The Argentinian Pumas use the same short version as the footballersCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd What is...

When the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) walks onto the pitch in Qatar on Monday, it will be appearing at a men’s World Cup for the first time since 2014. Thousands of Budweiser beer cans have been left piled up at a warehouse after the 11th hour decision to ban the sale of alcohol in stadiums. The beverage giant had been announced as one of the sponsors for the tournament, and had been granted a monopoly to sell beer at the grounds, but it is now only able to sell its alcohol-free version of its beer there.  Furious football fans started demanding refunds from World Cup bosses when the decision was made on Friday, understood to be following pressure from the Qatari royal family. It has left Budweiser facing the prospect of large amounts of stock now going to waste, The Sun reports.
