Jared Trainor had heard from a coworker there was good surf near Centerville Beach, so he decided to check it out. A 31-year-old farm technician and an experienced surfer who enjoyed the wildlife-heavy area, he had been thinking of going over there anyway on Sunday. Then during the drive, he had remembered it was now October. “Sharktober,” Trainor recounted in an interview on Wednesday. “That was kind of on my mind.” As a surfer with nearly a decade of experience across the California coast, Trainor is always aware of the potential risks sharks can pose. The Fortuna resident is also aware of the precautions to take, particularly on the North Coast where the presence of sharks can be higher. In hindsight, potential signs of risk came more sharply into focus. “It did seem like there might be a little more seals than normal,” said Trainor. “They were hanging out in the whitewash, which is pretty common for them anyways.” He watched the waves. After seeing a nice set roll through, he decided to suit up. Trainor paddled out past the...
FOLSOM  — Two inmates serving life sentences have died after being attacked at Northern California prisons, corrections officials said Wednesday. Robert Tunstall, 64, died Wednesday morning after another inmate attacked him in the recreation yard at Salinas Valley State Prison, according to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Life-saving measures failed and Tunstall was pronounced dead about a half-hour after the attack, authorities said. An inmate-made weapon was recovered and a suspect identified as Lawrence Adams, 42. Tunstall was admitted to prison from Solano County in 1976, to serve life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, corrections officials said. Adams was admitted from Tuolomne County in 2007 to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole under third-strike convictions for arson and other charges. He also was serving additional years for two attacks on other inmates at separate prisons, authorities said. Meanwhile, authorities were investigating the death of an inmate at State Prison, Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon. Two fellow inmates assaulted Felipe Rodriguez in the prison yard and the 36-year-old was pronounced dead...
The Mayor of a small south-western Mexican town, with a population of about 4,300 people, has been identified as one of 18 people gruesomely killed during a mass shooting. Mayor of San Miguel Totolapan Conrado Mendoza Almeda, his American brother-in-law Gustavo Salazar and the mayor's father, who shares his name, have been identified along with 7 others. Police and councilors were among the victims of the suspected gang crime, with the attack being blamed on the Los Tequileros criminal group, according to BBC. Police said gunmen stormed the town hall at 2pm on Wednesday leaving the council building riddled with bullet holes. Graphic images of bloodied bodies have been circulating social media with the Mayor's party condemning the attack as a 'cowardly assassination.' It is believed that the gunmen attacked Medoza Almeda's father's home before storming the council building. A highway in the state of Guerrero, where the town is located, has been reported to be briefly blocked by large vehicles to prevent security forces getting into the city. A Wayland police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him while he was at a house for a 911 call on Monday, Oct. 3. Dispatchers fielded a hang-up call around 11 a.m. and traced it to a home on Concord Road, the Wayland Police Department said in a release. The officer went there to make sure everything was OK, but while he spoke to the homeowner, their pit bull mix dog darted out of the house and attacked the officer. The animal bit him several times, authorities said.  The officer ran toward his car to get away, but the dog gave chase. The police department said the officer felt he had no choice but to shoot the animal as it charged at him. Paramedics took the officer to an area hospital to treat his bite wounds. Authorities haven't released any information on his condition or his name.  Wayland police opened an internal investigation into the shooting, which is standard procedure when an officer uses their weapon, officials said. Investigators said the dog had a history of aggressive behavior. ...
Two dogs were attacked and injured by coyotes in separate attacks in Connecticut. The Hartford County incidents took place in Burlington around dusk on Sunday, Oct. 2 in the Johnnycake Mountain Road area. According to Burlington Police Animal Control Officer Katie Meskun, the first dog was attacked by two coyotes when he was let outside of his home. The second attack took place close by when, again, a dog was let outside and attacked by a single coyote, Meskun said.  "Unfortunately, both dogs were bitten and pretty banged up from the attacks," she said. The dogs, who were both up to date on their rabies vaccines, were treated by their veterinarians and given rabies boosters, Meskun said. Meskun said animal owners should use care when letting their pets outside.  State conservation officials do not usually get involved unless the attacks become frequent, she added.

By David Klepper | Associated Press The Kremlin and Russian state media are aggressively pushing a baseless conspiracy theory blaming the United States for damage to natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in what analysts said Friday is another effort to split the U.S. and its European allies. The Russian position is also reverberating on social media forums popular with American conservatives and far-right groups. NATO leaders believe the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines between Russia and Germany is the result of sabotage. NATO has refrained from identifying a suspect pending an investigation into the damage. Russia began blaming the U.S. quickly after the damage was reported Monday night. On Friday, speaking at a ceremony to annex four Ukrainian regions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said “Anglo-Saxons” in the West were behind the “terror attacks” but did not specify any nations. Pravda and other Russian state outlets reported Thursday that the U.S. operates underwater robots capable of carrying out the acts of sabotage. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman wrote about her suspicions of U.S. involvement in...
Ewing was accused of attempting to force two of the women into his van on Sunday. He is now being charged with one felony count of attempted kidnapping and two felony counts of aggravated battery. During a photo line-up, two of the victims identified Ewing as their attacker, prosecutors said. On Wednesday, Ewing faced Judge Ahmad again in court. During the hearing, Ewing asked if he could make a statement, but the judge immediately denied his request and muted his microphone. Judge Ahmad reviewed Ewing’s prior convictions and prison sentences for sexual abuse, aggravated battery, and criminal trespassing. Based on that information, the judge concluded that Ewing was a “real and present danger to the community” and set his bond at $500,000. According to WGN-TV, Ewing’s defense attorney stated his client suffers from mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
A woman was attacked and a cat killed by a pair of "aggressive" dogs that are continually on the loose around the Lehigh Valley area, police say. Officers are now attempting to have the canines classified as dangerous around the state but are running into a series of legal technicalities due to the owner’s alleged refusal to surrender them. The first attack occurred on a woman near Willow Drive in North Catasauqua on Friday, Sept. 9, police said. While officers were searching for the two dogs, a second attack report came in that involved a cat that had been killed by the same dogs, according to police. After these attacks, local residents were asked to shelter in place as the dogs were contained. A short time later, their owner was found and was able to lead the officers to the dogs, who were then temporarily secured in the borough’s kennel, police said. Three days later, the owner refused to sign the dogs over to the Pennsylvania dog warden, authorities said. Legal proceedings have now been initiated to have the dogs...
A self-proclaimed California “incel” is facing federal charges on Tuesday after allegedly committing a string of violent assaults and harassing several women for months—and posting some of the assaults on his Youtube channel. Johnny Deven Young, 25, was hit with several crimes—including assault with great bodily injury, illegal use of tear gas, personal use of a deadly weapon, eight hate crime enhancements, and faces misdemeanor counts of violation of civil rights—after prosecutors say he attacked at least six people in three different incidents dating to last November, according to an Orange County Superior Court criminal complaint obtained by The Daily Beast. Young, who has been wanted by police since May, also allegedly attacked a man who tried to stop him. He appeared in court Monday after being arrested in San Mateo County and is now being held on a $500,000 bond until October arraignment. “No one should have to live in fear that they could be indiscriminately attacked and then publicly humiliated on the Internet because of their gender,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a Tuesday statement....

The victim explained that she might lose vision in her right eye. She said, "I can't see anything on my right side, honestly. And it just hurts." Gomes noted that her head is still throbbing from the attack, and she has barely slept in a week. "Man, I watched the video, and it tears my heart out of me," said the victim's husband, Clement Tucker. The victim explained that the man who attacked her was muttering incoherent nonsense and talking about "Satan" before grabbing and beating her. "Every day is an incident in the subway," Gomes said. "What happened to all these police officers they said they will have there to protect us? There's like nobody to be found. I don't understand." Following the attack on Gomes, Foster was charged with felony assault and is currently being held without bail. In 1995,...

Former President Donald Trump complained to Sean Hannity that he’s being “attacked” so close to an election he isn’t even running in. Thursday’s Hannity aired part two of the host’s interview with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. On Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the state filed a civil suit against the Trump Organization that alleges the company overvalued assets to obtain low-interest loans from financial institutions. The suit seeks $250 million, as well as the banning of Trump and his adult children at the company from operating businesses in the state. “Donald Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself and to cheat the system, thereby cheating all of us,” James said at a press conference. Trump called the lawsuit an attack by New York Democrats before claiming there’s a tradition of not bringing legal action against politicians so close to an election. Of course, Trump is not running this year. “And there’s a rule,” Trump said. “It’s an unwritten law. You never do this politically. You won’t see Hunter Biden...

Former President Donald Trump told Fox News on Wednesday he posted about the Aug. 8 FBI raid on his home, as he was receiving calls from reporters about a large police presence at the estate. He said he decided to announce the search of the property himself on Truth Social as the calls continued to come in. In a special, hour-long interview with Sean Hannity, the host asked him to describe the moment he heard his home was the subject of a search by federal agents. “I was in New Jersey, I got a call in the morning from somebody that’s here [who said,] ‘Sir, the FBI just came in,'” Trump said. “I said, ‘What, the FBI who?’ And they go, ‘The FBI,’ and I said, ‘How many people?'” Trump said the person on the other end of the line said there were “many, many people” on the property.” He added: And [the FBI] wanted to do it quietly – silently. And I said, “What do you mean silent? They’re not silent,” because I watched the way they were so...

A Boston man who authorities say has a history of attacking corrections officers is now accused of beating a female caseworker last week while at the Nashua Street Jail.  Ahmad Maiden, 43, faces charges of assault and battery on a correctional facility employee, disturbing a correctional institution, and threats from the alleged attack, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said.  Officials said Maiden was meeting with the woman on Thursday, Sept. 15, when he started to punch her in the face and head. It's unclear what sparked the alleged violent outburst. Correctional officers quickly separated them, and paramedics rushed the woman to Massachusetts General for treatment, authorities said. The prosecutor's office did not release any information on her injuries.  As officers were restraining Maiden after the attack, he threatened that he would have them killed, the DA's office said.  Maiden is accused of attacking a corrections officer last month, as well. He's also charged with beating a family member last year, the prosecutor's office said.  Suffolk County officials transferred Maiden to the Essex County Sheriff's Department to hold him before his trials.
Memphis woman Alicia Franklin says she was raped by Cleotha Abston, who authorities believe abducted and killed billionaire heiress Eliza Fletcher on September 2 A woman in Memphis who was allegedly raped last year by Eliza Fletcher's alleged killer has filed a lawsuit against the city's police department accusing them of negligence for not sufficiently investigating her case.  The suit, filed by Alicia Franklin on September 20, says Memphis police may have been able to prevent Fletcher's kidnapping and death if they had adequately investigated Franklin's assault in September 21 more seriously. Franklin, 22, says she was raped by Cleotha Abston, who authorities believe abducted and killed billionaire heiress Fletcher on September 2 as she was running early in the morning.  'Cleotha Abston should and could have been arrested and indicted for the aggravated rape of Alicia Franklin many months earlier, most likely in the year 2021,' says the suit filed in Shelby County Circuit Court. The suit contends that if authorities had acted when Franklin reported her assault, 'the abduction and murder of Eliza Fletcher would not have occurred.'...
Sargeant reported that as he stood facing the oncoming crowd, an individual approached him and took his sign. "As best I could on a cane, but with a little adrenaline going, I kind of hobbled after him down the street, got my sign back," Sargeant told the news outlet. After retrieving his sign, Sargeant said he returned to where he initially stood and continued silently protesting, but it did not take long for more activists to confront him. A video posted to Sargeant's Facebook page showed a woman attempting to rip the sign from his hands. Another parade attendee accused her of assaulting Sargeant, and she replied by accusing him of starting the altercation by elbowing her friend. Sargeant claimed that during the Vermont pride parade, he was shoved, smacked, and knocked to the ground by radical transgender activists. He also stated that the activists poured coffee on his head and stole his property. He wrote on Facebook, "So, I went to Pride to protest their misogyny, homophobia, exclusionary policies and divisiveness. I was met by screaming, multiple assaults,...

After spending thousands of dollars to attack Republican Senate candidate JD Vance for attending Donald Trump's campaign rally on the same night as a major Ohio college football game, DailyMail.com has learned that Vance's opponent, Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, skipped the festivities himself. The race has captured national attention, with Democrats hoping to flip the battleground state seat being vacated by retiring GOP Senator Rob Portman. Trump announced earlier this month that he would be in Youngstown, Ohio on Saturday night to campaign for Vance and a slew of GOP Congressional hopefuls. Ryan's campaign immediately seized on the timing, casting Vance as an outsider who purposely scheduled the rally for the same time as Ohio State University and the University of Toledo, both Ohio schools, faced off on the football field.
