LIV Golf defector Martin Kaymer has claimed he does not feel comfortable teeing it up at the BMW PGA Championship next week amid the ongoing tension between the rebel tour players and the DP World Tour loyalists.  The German, 37, was one of 19 LIV Golf players listed in the field for the DP World Tour's, formerly the European Tour, flagship event at Wentworth in Surrey, England.  However, the two-time major champion has decided to withdraw from the event as he insisted he does not want to play somewhere he 'is not welcome'.  'Of course, there will be friction there, that's why I'm not going,' Kaymer told Golf Digest on Thursday after finishing the pro-am at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston.  'I don't need to go to a place where, feel-wise, you're not that welcome. They don't say it, but [it's there].' Kaymer is the first Saudi rebel to withdraw his name from the field, while other defectors and mainstays of the DP World Tour are still set to play, including former Ryder Cup teammates Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell...

It's happened again: another case of mistaken identity involving a celebrity who attended the U.S. Open in New York City. Earlier this week, fans mistook actress Laverne Cox for Beyoncé when the Orange Is The New Black star attended the Grand Slam tennis tournament on Monday.  Now, just two days later, ESPN commentators were listing off the various celebrities in the stands and mistook the identities of legendary singers Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick. SANTA CLARA — If 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is shifting into a crisis mode with the return of Jimmy Garoppolo, he’s hiding it well. In his first public comments Thursday since learning the 49ers’ starter since 2017 was back on the roster to serve as his backup, Lance was as positive and upbeat as he’s been in every media opportunity through the offseason and training camp. “It’s good to have him back, good to have him back in the meeting, in the QB room again,” Lance said. “He’s been a big brother to me since the day I got drafted. I know he’s got my back, I’ve got his back.” The two quarterbacks went through the normal paces of practice along with rookie Brock Purdy, surely aware that all eyes of a sizable media contingent were upon their every move. Yet to Lance, it was just another day at the office. “It was super normal, actually,” Lance said. “You guys probably wouldn’t even believe it. It was fun having him around. He’s a high-energy guy, in the huddle, outside the...

Any talk about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa these days sounds more like a heated political debate than traditional sports analysis and commentary. Opinions on him range so far from one another, and those on opposite ends of that spectrum could never possibly find common ground with their adversaries. On one side, you have national media pundits, many of which have already deemed Tagovailoa’s career doomed off of two uneven seasons. There are factions of fans that hold the same view, even some Dolphins fans who don’t think he has what it takes and want to fast-forward to the next signal-caller. Then, you have a group of Dolphins fans that have given Tagovailoa a cult-like following called TuAnon, playing off the far-right conspiracy theory movement, QAnon. Yet, maybe even more willing to go to bat for Tagovailoa than his unwavering fans has been Miami’s new star receiver, Tyreek Hill, hyping up Tagovailoa on his new podcast this summer as a more accurate passer than Patrick Mahomes, arguably the NFL’s top quarterback today. Of course, national media then had weekslong segments...
A Florida zoo keeper had his hand bitten off during a routine interaction with one of his own alligators due to an errant leaf.  Greg Graziani, wildlife director of Florida Gator Gardens in Venus and an alligator veteran of 46 years, had his wrist chomped on August 17, the park reported on its Facebook page.  Graziani was using his hand under the alligator's jaw to give it a command when the wind blew a leaf between himself and the beast, severing essential eye contact that triggered the predator to lunge forward and bite. 'Lack of visibility was the problem,' Graziani told CNN. 'There was no malice.' The creature pulled back on his arm, crushing and twisting it instinctively, until it responded to a command and released its death grip. 'Had this been a totally wild alligator with no training, it would've been a lot worse,' he said. 'This was an occupational hazard, not a public safety issue,' he added. San Jose hasn’t beaten rival Lincoln in the annual Big Bone Game since 1997. If ever there were a perfect time to end the streak, Friday night would be it. The long-running series between San Jose’s oldest public high schools — now played on Labor Day weekend after decades of Thanksgiving Day clashes — will be hosted by San Jose High for the first time in the modern era. “Our alumni and community are behind us, so we’ll have people supporting us,” said first-year San Jose coach Prashant Kumar, previously an assistant coach at Overfelt. “Lincoln talks about keeping the Bone home, and we talk about taking that Bone back home.” While a new tradition of playing at home sites is a recent one — the game was played at San Jose City College for years — the mutual respect between the two programs is not. Playing on Thanksgiving allowed the schools to plan a massive dance for students from both high schools. With the game now on Labor Day weekend, Lincoln coach Kevin Collins said there’s no longer enough...
After years of failed attempts to impose health and safety buffer zones around new oil and gas wells in California, state lawmakers on Wednesday sent a bill to the governor that would require setbacks between those production sites and residential neighborhoods and other sensitive areas. Senate Bill 1137 is a major part of a package of climate legislation that Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged to bolster the state’s environmental policies. “It’s a long-standing and glaring example of environmental racism,” said state Sen. Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach), who introduced the bill. “Research shows, of course, that people of color, Black, brown and Indigenous people suffer the greatest consequences of this toxic proximity and these are the same communities that have oil production in their backyards.” The legislation prohibits the California Geologic Energy Management Division from approving a new oil well within 3,200 feet of a “sensitive receptor,” defined as a residence, education resource, community resource, healthcare facility, dormitory or any building open to the public. Similar efforts have failed to gain traction in the state Legislature in the past, succumbing...

A new study is shedding light on the impact of cell phone screens and how blue lights could have aging effects on mobile users. According to The Daily Beast, researchers at Oregon State University recently conducted a study where they determined that "blue light from digital LED screens accelerated the aging process in fruit flies." On Wednesday, August 31, the study was published by Frontiers in Aging and reportedly suggested: "that the light altered levels of metabolites—a chemical used to keep cells working correctly—in the insects." by Scott McClallen   Michigan’s K-12 education spending, per pupil and adjusted for inflation, increased by 10% between 2002 and 2020 because the state lost 25% of enrolled students, according to a new report. The nonprofit Reason Foundation’s 2022 K-12 Education Spending Spotlight includes real and nominal U.S. Census Bureau data for all 50 states dating from 2002 through fiscal year 2020, the most recent available. Michigan schools were losing students far before COVID-19 began. In the 2010-11 school year, Michigan public schools boasted 1.6 million students. As much as this weekend marked a reunion for Trey Mancini, the same applied for Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias. The former top assistant in the Houston Astros’ front office caught up with several familiar faces and former coworkers throughout the series at Minute Maid Park. It also offered an opportunity to compare where the Orioles’ rebuilding process stands relative to the one Elias was a part of in Houston. Since being hired and promising to build an “elite talent pipeline” after the 2018 season, Elias has pointed to the Astros’ successes as a framework for the Orioles’ project. Houston, of course, won the World Series in 2017 to spark five straight runs to the American League Championship Series, holding the AL’s best record this season. The Orioles, seeking their first playoff appearance and winning season since 2016, are 1 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. The budding similarities between what occurred in Houston and what might in Baltimore showed themselves this weekend, when Elias’ former team took on his current one with the latter...
In possibly his final game in a Jets uniform, Denzel Mims might have saved his best for last. Mims recorded seven catches for 102 yards in Gang Green’s 31-27 victory over the Giants. On Wednesday, Mims’ agent Ron Slavin publicly requested the Jets either trade or release his client, stating, “It’s just time.” After Sunday’s game, Mims spoke to the media for the first time since the request, saying that was a decision between him and his agent. “I can just control what I can control,” Mims said. “I just need to come out every day do my part, come to work every day and come grinding.” Mims has fallen down the Jets’ depth chart as he has dealt with illnesses, injuries and inconsistent play during his two seasons in New York. In two years with the Jets, the 24-year-old has caught 31 passes for 490 yards and zero touchdowns. This summer, Mims performed better throughout training camp and the preseason. However, that hasn’t stopped the Jets from fielding calls for Mims as they’re expected to grant his request. Mims...

The United States is facing a looming crisis of utility shutoffs, with a record number of households falling behind on their power bills, industry observers and experts say. About 20 million US households, or one out of six homes, are behind on their utility bills, the most on record, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (Neada). 'I expect a tsunami of shutoffs,' Jean Su, a senior attorney at the non-profit Center for Biological Diversity, which tracks the power industry, told Bloomberg this week.  Electricity prices have soared due to rising costs for natural gas, which has skyrocketed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in late February. At the same time, inflation is sending the prices of groceries and everyday necessities soaring, and many households have had to make tough choices about whether to pay utility bills or put food on the table. Electricity prices have risen sharply in the US, hitting record-high $0.166 per kW-h in July US households now owe $16 billion in late energy bills, double the pre-pandemic total Millions of Americans could face utility cutoffs in the coming month,...

These had all been recovered from different locations in Asia, Europe, and Africa.  The aim was to search for signs of Neanderthal influence on human facial anatomy, which would result from interbreeding events.  'Neanderthals had big faces,' said Steven Churchill, co-author of the study and a professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University. 'But size alone doesn't establish any genetic link between a human population and Neanderthal populations.  Discovery: Most interbreeding between humans and Neanderthals took place in the 'Near East' region between North Africa and Iraq around 50,000 years ago, a new study suggests 'Our work here involved a more robust analysis of the facial structures.' Some of the ancient skulls did show such evidence of Neanderthal influence on human facial anatomy, leading researchers to pinpoint the Near East as...
George Foreman is being sued for upwards of $50million by two women who claim he groomed and sexually abused them as minors while a young boxer in the 1970s. The 73-year-old former heavyweight champion, who denies the allegations, was introduced to the pair, named only as Gwen H and Denise S, by their fathers, who worked closely with Foreman at the time. Two separate law suits claiming compensation for 'physical and mental pain and suffering' were filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court yesterday, alleging that Foreman first met the girls when they were under the age of ten. He had sex with them when they were 15 and he was already a boxing champion, the plaintiffs claim. The filling alleges Foreman, estimated to be worth around $300million, sexually abused Denise S when she was 13 years old, before having sex with her two years later. Nevada resident Gwen H said Foreman threatened to fire her father, a longtime advisor to the boxer, if she did not submit to his will. She said the abuse continued until she was 16....

The U.S. economy shrank at a 0.6 percent annual rate from April through June, a more moderate contraction than originally estimated, revised figures showed.  The Commerce Department said in its first revision on Thursday that gross domestic product shrank at a 0.6 percent annualized rate last quarter, rather than the previously estimated 0.9 percent decline. Still, the revised figures confirmed a second straight quarter of economic contraction, which meets one informal sign of a recession. The economy contracted at a 1.6 percent rate in the first quarter. While the two-straight quarterly decreases in GDP meet one definition of a technical recession, other measures of economic activity suggest a slowing pace of expansion rather than a true downturn.  The U.S. economy shrank at a 0.6 percent annual rate from April through June, a more moderate contraction than originally estimated, revised figures showed The revised GDP estimate reflected a significant upgrade in consumer spending figures, blunting some of the drag from a slower pace of inventory accumulation.  Underlying retail sales were much stronger than initially reported in May, and that strength persisted through...

What began as an ordinary rail trip under the English Channel turned into pure claustrophobia nightmare fuel on Tuesday when a train came to a stop and passengers were left stranded for hours in a narrow concrete pipe under the seabed. Alarms sounded on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service from Calais in northern France to Folkestone in south England at around 3:50 p.m., and the train grounded to a halt. As the cause of the incident was investigated, passengers were directed to evacuate the train’s carriages and walk down an emergency service tunnel. Surreal videos of the incident shared on social media showed travelers carrying luggage and pets along the 24-mile tunnel. The holidaymakers had to make their way down the concrete shaft on foot for around 10 minutes to get in front of the stricken train and meet a replacement vehicle. The passengers then faced an hours-long wait for the new train to arrive. “The service tunnel was terrifying,” traveler Sarah Fellows said, according to The Times. “It was like a disaster movie. You were just walking into the...
(CNN)Rep. Jerry Nadler will win the Democratic nomination in New York's 12th Congressional District, CNN projects, unseating Rep. Carolyn Maloney in a clash of longtime Upper Manhattan incumbents.Nadler and Maloney were drawn into the same district by an independent mapmaker after state Democrats' proposed lines were thrown out in court. For decades, the pair enjoyed parallel dominion over the East and West sides, but the new map -- and their mutual refusal to consider another district -- prompted what became one of the nastiest primary races of the year."This district does not belong to me, or to my opponents for that matter," Nadler said in a speech Tuesday evening. "It belongs only to the voters of this district. The New Yorkers who get up every day and busy themselves with building a better, fairer city. Those New Yorkers get to choose who represents the people and values of this city," he continued. "You know what? I think the voters made themselves clear tonight."Attorney Suraj Patel appears to be on track to finish third, his argument that the new district was...
