The war that Vladimir Putin thought he would win in a matter of days is still raging on after nearly a year, with both sides desperately seeking more equipment, soldiers, and international support. But Russia, it seems, may soon be in for a knock-out blow—courtesy of Ukraine’s friends in the U.S. and Europe. Last week, Washington announced a new $3.8 billion arms package to Ukraine that included everything from sorely-needed air defense systems to artillery shells. Most of Ukraine’s excitement, though, was reserved for the inclusion of the Bradley fighting vehicle, a capable armored vehicle that Ukraine has long sought to help reclaim land seized by Russia. The decision to finally send Bradleys signals that even more sophisticated weapons systems, including tanks, might be just over the horizon. The line of what systems are “too escalatory” to send to Ukraine has constantly been moving in Ukraine’s favor, with weapons thought to be too escalatory at the start of the war now either on their way or on the table. The U.S. and other countries have sent artillery to Ukraine throughout...
German humanitarian Georg Lange, 63, has been freed after being held hostage in the Sahel for four and a half years, his NGO Help announced on Saturday. “We are so relieved and grateful that our colleague Georg Lange of more than four and a half years has returned to his family,” HELP executive director Bianca Kaltschmidt wrote in a statement. The NGO “heartily thanks all those who contributed or supported this publication, especially the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Criminal Police, as well as officials and friends in Mali, Niger and neighboring countries.”. As we reported yesterday, according to the German weekly Der Spiegel, the release could take place thanks to Moroccan secret services and their connections with jihadist groups in the Sahel. Lange reportedly returned to Germany on a military plane, Der Spiegel adds. The German government declined to comment when asked by AFP. Jörg Lange was abducted on motorcycles by armed men near Ayoro in western Niger on April 11, 2018, a victim of a series of jihadist attacks along the border with Mali....

SCHÖNAU AM KÖNIGSSEE, Germany (AP) — At 23 minutes before midnight, at 1,703 meters (5,600 feet) above sea level, the lashing rain and furious winds outside the darkened bunkroom prompted two questions to turn over in my head: Will the roof of this hut be ripped off in the dead of night? Will I be able to continue my ridge trek to my next destination on the German-Austrian border the next day? Several sleepless hours later, the answers emerged: 1) No, these aren’t just simple mountain huts and 2) yes, this is typical Alpine weather for southern Bavaria. And so at dawn, I trekked out, up through the undercast clouds. The reward was the majesty of the Bavarian Alps, showering glory upon those willing to hike serious trails, and maybe endure copious amounts of apricot schnapps in the company of hearty German hikers. This is Berchtesgaden, a national park in southeastern Germany, wedged into a thumb of land poking into Austria. The Alps slash the skies, in jagged granite and knife-drops into sudden valleys. Berchtesgaden’s huts are serious...

The announcement of the signing has been made through a video posted on the RRSS of Real Betis, which will have to pay slightly less than 4 million euros to Fiorentina for the transfer of the second captain of the Argentine team and recent winner of the Copa América . The ad video is a fun tribute to the GTA IV video game. This will be the second stage of German Pezzella, 30, at Real Betis, where he already played between 2015 and 2017 – he was booked from River plate by Eduardo Maciá-, and was under the orders of Pepe Mel, Juan Merino, Gustavo Poyet, Víctor Sánchez del Amo and Alexis Trujillo. A German journalist who spent four years in the Luftwaffe has revealed how he attended the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials to 'meet the past in flesh and blood' and examine if he do could have partcipated in the worst atrocities of Nazi Germany.  Horst Krüger, who died in 1999, spent four years in the Luftwaffe, serving as a lance corporal and paratropper on the Soviet and Italian fronts and publlished his memoir The Broken House in 1966.  After being rediscovered in Germany in 2019, his book is now being published in English later this month, examining what made so many 'good' people fall under the spell of Hitler.  Krüger explained he was shocked  by the fact the men standing trial looked no different than him, and had build successful lives after the atrocities they committed during the war.  He said that the trial made him reflect on what he would have done if he had been assigned to the death camp, and whether he would have participated in the crimes the 22 defendants were accused of, admitting that he too could...
In addition to her status as chancellor, Angela Merkel is ultimately a citizen like any other. Evidenced by a funny sequence that has gone viral on the web in recent days. In a video posted on Twitter, the Chancellor can be seen participating in a session in the German parliament, the Bundestag. After a speech in the gallery in front of the deputies – during which she was able to remove her mask – she returned to sit quietly in her seat. After a few seconds, a glimmer of doubt appears in Merkel’s eyes: she seems to realize that something important is missing on her nose and mouth …: her mask! Neither one nor two, the Head of State then jumps up and rushes to the desk to retrieve her precious mask, before returning to her seat, hilarious. If the sequence made the German assembly laugh a lot, it also made the rounds of social networks. The video, initially posted on Twitter, now has nearly four million views. In any case, it is clear that the health...
The Conversation Spain The man who drew bread from the air (but also killed millions of people) The “green revolution” promoted by the “father of modern agriculture”, the North American agronomist Norman Ernest Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1970, would not have been possible if, forty years earlier, the fields had not experienced another revolution whose Promoter was both a war criminal and responsible for the salvation of modern agriculture. Inspire thoroughly. You probably think you are filling your lungs with oxygen. It is not like this. Almost 80% of the air we breathe is nitrogen, the most abundant element in the atmosphere, which is vital for our existence, because, among other things, it is an essential component of nucleic acids and amino acids. Organic life, our life, is pure reactive chemistry, but paradoxically nitrogen is inert, as it does not interact with other elements. When we breathe, nitrogen enters the lungs and leaves again immediately without causing any reaction other than serving as a diluting agent for oxygen in respiration. To be useful, it must adopt other more...
TONIGHT, RB Leipzig will take on French giants PSG in what promises to be a Champions League semi-final with plenty of goals. However, aside from The Red Bulls very own supporters, German football fans will most likely be cheering on Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Co. 11RB Leipzig's players celebrate beating Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions league semi finalCredit: Getty - Pool 11The club are owned and financed by the Red Bull energy drink companyCredit: Getty Images - Getty For RB Leipzig are the most hated team in Germany, thanks in part to the way they were formed, have been financed, and gone against the country's fundamental approach to the beautiful game. Founded by Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz in 2009, when the energy drink company bought fifth tier SSV Markranstadt, their success story knows no bounds. Four promotions in just eight years saw RB Leipzig enter the Bundesliga, where they've provided a genuine threat to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund's dominance. And now, they've got the biggest game in their history - and one step away from the biggest...
