The brother of a late police officer who responded to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot explained why he didn’t shake hands with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Congressional Gold Medals were awarded on Tuesday to those officers. There were 21 House Republicans who voted against awarding the medal to the officers. The brother of Capitol Police officer Brain Sicknick, who died of a stroke shortly the day after the riot, did not mince words explaining why he snubbed McConnell and McCarthy. “Self-explanatory, but, you know, they came out right away and condemned what happened on Jan. 6. And whatever hold Trump has on them, they backstepped and danced,” Ken Sicknick told CBS News congressional correspondent Scott McFarlane. “Not necessarily they themselves but of Trump and the rioters. I mean, people like [Texas GOP Congressman] Louie Gohmert who presented the American flag that was flown on the Capitol to a Jan. 6 rioter and told them they were a patriot. It’s disgusting. Takes away everything my brother’s done. Takes away the heroism my...

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My sister-in-law has always given me an extremely frosty reception. She never says anything rude, but she will avoid saying hello when we visit,  only doing so an hour after we arrive. She also drinks beverages in front of us without offering, and generally avoids speaking to me for the entire visit. Anything I say to try and get a conversation going is often met with an odd stare or her not understanding what I mean, despite it being very clear. If we’re at the dinner table, she will either remain silent or talk to someone else. President Joe Biden shrugged off polls showing voters believed he was not mentally fit, during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday. One reporter asked Biden why only 40 percent of voters in a new Morning Consult survey believe Biden is mentally fit, 37 percent say he is in good health, and 43 percent believe he is stable. “I have no idea,” Biden replied. The president appeared aware of recent polling showing his approval ratings at record lows but expressed disbelief that his approval was low even among independents. “I don’t believe the polls,” he said shortly. Biden appeared to relish the length of his 112-minute press conference, telling reporters he was considering staying for as long as three hours. “I can still stand. It’s amazing,” he said wryly when reporters thanked him for taking their questions. “I can do pushups.” But his answers to questions from reporters grew longer and more meandering as the press conference continued. Biden indicated he would shift his communications strategy in the coming months, and get out of the White House to...
They are known to be extremely social creatures that thrive in the freezing waters of the Artic. So the discovery of a lone beluga whale off the coast of Seattle — almost 1,500 miles from its nearest population in Alaska — has left scientists baffled.  The wayward creature's 'very rare' appearance is the first documented sighting of a beluga whale in the inlet of Puget Sound in more than 80 years. The closest beluga whale population is in Cook Inlet, Alaska, about 1,450 miles away. The marine mammals feed feed on fish, crustaceans, and worms. Ranging from 13ft to 20ft in length, the whales are common in the Arctic Ocean's coastal waters. But they migrate southwards in large herds when the sea freezes...

New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole seems to have embraced the hatred for the Red Sox in this longstanding MLB rivalry. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have had a long history of intense games and bad blood. For years these teams have been fueled by wanting to dominate the other. They met again on Friday night, and it seems like pitcher Gerrit Cole has embraced the spirit of this heated rivalry. At least that is the best guess for why the star pitcher looked so angry while at the mound. Of course, it could also be because of his less-than-stellar outing during the game. Yankees Pitcher Gerrit Coles looks irritated during matchup against rival Red Sox.The Yankees need these wins against the Red Sox to make up ground in the AL East. Unfortunately, things didn’t start well for New York as they trailed Boston 3-1. Gerrit Cole gave up three runs by the sixth inning, and he didn’t look too happy about it. It was that or relishing in the hatred his team has for the...
Apparently, wind turbines can also freeze when it gets hot. Or at least, after a deadly outage that left much of Texas in the dark over the winter, the Texas energy grid managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is once again warning that Texans need to cut back on energy use, or face the possibility of a new extended outage.  It’s a situation that will surely lead Republicans to howl once again about the unreliability of renewable power. However, just as in the winter outage, wind and solar are actually performing at a rate above projections. The real problem comes because of “power plant outages,” according to ERCOT. That would be the coal and natural gas plants that make up 64% of Texas’ electrical energy mix. The energy management organization describes those outages as “unexpected,” but it’s providing no additional details. Even at the time it was occurring, it was clear that the primary cause of the outage during the winter was a cascade failure of fossil fuel plants—and especially of natural gas. But what’s happening now isn’t so...
Authorities in Maryland said on Monday that they have "no idea" why a man allegedly killed 4 people, including gunning down his parents in their home, before killing himself. Joshua Green, 27, killed his parents and fatally shot two others at a convenience store before setting fire to his apartment and killing himself on Sunday, Baltimore County Police said in a release sent to the Washington Examiner. "As to why this occurred, we have no idea yet," Baltimore County Police Col. Andre Davis said during a news conference. "Our homicide detectives are tirelessly investigating a motive, but it appears that the shooter acted alone." Police allege Green killed his parents — Douglas Green, 58, and Olivia Green, 62 — at their residence in Baltimore County before driving to a Royal Farms convenience store in Essex before 7 a.m. Sunday. WHITE HOUSE CONFIRMS BIDEN WILL SIGN EXECUTIVE ORDER ON GUN CONTROL IN WAKE OF BOULDER SHOOTING When he arrived, Green reportedly blocked a car in the store's parking lot. He stepped out of the vehicle and fatally shot Alpha Smith, 62,...
Species of turtle, shark, penguin, seal and whale swim in circles, new research shows – but scientists aren't sure why.  Japanese researchers examined high-resolution 3D movements of the various marine animals, gathered from biologging technology.  Biologging uses using small instruments mounted on an animal to track their movements over long periods of time.  They revealed circling 'events' where animals consecutively circled more than twice at 'relatively constant angular speed'.  This finding is surprising in part because swimming in a straight line is the most efficient way to move about.   At first glance the behaviour may appear random, but it could serve several similar purposes, including foraging, social interactions, and navigation.   This artist's impression shows the circling behaviour of various large marine creatures WHAT IS BIOLOGGING? Biologging is the practice of logging and relaying of physical and biological data using animal-attached tags.  They track movements of large ocean-dwelling animals.  Biologging technologies have become available within the last couple of decades and are advancing rapidly.  Animal-attached tags are being applied to a wide range of animals.  In marine environments, it is otherwise...
I spent a morning in Glasgow's Dennistoun, which was recently named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world. Mikhaila Friel/Insider I visited Dennistoun in Glasgow, which was recently named the coolest neighborhood in the UK and the eighth coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out. After speaking to some of the locals, I discovered that Dennistoun is prided on its food and nightlife. However, when I visited on October 23, all restaurants and bars were closed in Glasgow due to the city's lockdown restrictions.  Cafes were still open, so I ate breakfast at Mesa on Duke Street — it turned out to be the highlight of my visit.  But besides the nearby Alexandra Park, there wasn't much to do in the neighborhood besides dining.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. I've called Glasgow, Scotland home for most of my life. But until last week, I had never visited Dennistoun — a neighborhood in the city's east end which was recently named one of the coolest in the world. Dennistoun came in at eighth place in...
