Fashion week has come back to the big apple with nearly six days of in-person runway shows, including Gabriela Hearst, Prabal Gurung, LaQuan Smith, Collina Strada, and Batsheva, hosted in different locations around the city. So, what sustainability did we see during New York Fashion Week? New York designer Gabriela Hearst came to New York fashion week with a plan, showcasing women activists and heroes while keeping sustainability in mind. Hearst, who is known for her sustainable manufacturing practices, made one-third of her spring collection from deadstock fabrics and all of the shoe soles were largely biodegradable, and she did not stop there. The glue that held together the gold-foil knitted dresses was also eco-certified. In addition, British designer Stuart Vevers used old leather jackets to rework into jumpsuits, coats, and bags. The Collina Strada Spring/Summer 2023 show at Fashion Week included collaborations, including two footwear capsules from sustainably-minded brands Virón and Melissa. Nike just announced a hoodie that has been five years in the making to ensure sustainable fabric and reduced carbon emissions. The sports brand introduced Nike Forward with the launch of a sustainable fleece hoodie. We’ve taken away all of the steps that we can, down to the simplest process, so that we can have...

In an ideal world, we would all never buy fast fashion. However, this is just not realistic for everybody. Fashion is exciting and always changing. New trends often attract overconsumption. Many people wear new clothes a handful of times and simply discard them when a trend goes out of style. Most clothing cannot be composted and end up in landfills. The good news is that as a consumer, you have the power to vote with your wallet. Buy fair trade, or as close as you can get to it, and you will be making an immensely positive difference in this world. We hope this guide helps you to do just that. What is Fast Fashion? Fast fashion is a design, manufacturing, and marketing method focused on rapidly producing high volumes of clothing, according to The Good Trade. It’s centered around trends and utilizes low-quality materials to bring inexpensive styles to the end consumer. The business model depends on consumers endlessly buying clothes to keep up with these ever-changing trends. Why We Need Ethical Fashion Sustainable fashion is an all-inclusive...

The new documentary ‘SLAY’ will expose the animal cruelty in the leather, fur, and wool industries along with the greenwashing tactics of the industry. The fashion industry kills at least 2.5 billion animals every year, which is what prompted the creators to release this documentary to finally expose the cruel practices of the industry. Over the last three years, investigative filmmaker Rebecca Cappelli and her team have been investigating and filming inside fur and wool farms, leather tanneries, and skin processors in Australia, Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, and the United States. In a crowdfunding teaser, Cappelli, the director and producer of the film, tells people that the issues that are talked about surrounding the fashion industry are usually workers’ rights and environmental impact. However, animals are far too often left out of this discussion. “One of my main inspirations for doing this film is the animals, who are completely left out of this conversation,” Cappelli says in the video. SLAY shows horrifying investigative footage that Cappelli and her team took with numerous interviews with sustainable fashion experts....

Now, there are many leather alternatives available, including apple leather, mushroom leather, and synthetic leather. Many of these materials, like apple leather, get very close to the look and feel of leather, but unfortunately, production costs can be high, and there will still be people unwilling to try something like leather alternatives....
Some animal rights issues have gained more traction than others in recent years. The one that probably stands out the most is our use of animals in the fashion industry. Fur has probably gained the most notoriety, but people and brands are also beginning to understand the ethical consequences of using wool and exotic skins. Here are 10 high-profile fashion brands that have dropped fur, wool, and exotic skins in the past year. 1. Moda Operandi Bans Fur and Exotic Skins Source: PETA/YouTube In April, Moda Operandi decided to stop sourcing exotic skins and fur after PETA sent them information documenting the abuse in these industries. After PETA received the confirmation that the company was going to discontinue these products, they sent Moda Operandi some bunny-shaped vegan chocolates.   “Exotic skins and fur belong on the animals born with them, not on collars or clutches,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The champagne corks are popping at PETA as we celebrate that Moda Operandi is making the fashion world a kinder place for foxes, alligators, and other animals.” 2....
Animals have long been used on runways and in fashion ads. The marketers in fashion have realized that something about them fascinates audiences. Maybe it’s because something primal in our brains is triggered, perhaps they are there to symbolize an attribute the clothing is supposed to represent (fierceness, majestic, etc.), or maybe people just love seeing “cute” animals. But putting animals on display to sell a product is inherently exploitative. Animals have desires of their own, and they almost assuredly don’t involve having to sit still for a photograph or walking down a runway as flashbulbs go off in their faces. Here are ten instances where animals were used on runways or in fashion ads, both the good and the bad. 1. Julianne Moore Poses Nude With Lion Cubs Source: Pursuitist/YouTube In 2012, Julianne Moore stripped off her clothes and posed for Bvlgari, an Italian jewelry company. The recent fashion of not bathing followed by celebrities seems to be gaining more and more prominence, generating a whole debate that is already part of the social conversation. For this reason, more and more voices are speaking about it. Now it has been the actor Jason Momoa, known for his roles in ‘Aquaman’ or in ‘Game of Thrones’, who has spoken about it and his response could not be more brilliant. In an interview that the actor gave to Access Hollywood, Momoa was asked about this growing trend. The actor had this to say: “I’m Aquaman. I’m in the damn water. Don’t worry, I’m Hawaiian, we’ve got salt water on top. We’re fine.” In this way he settled his position on this controversy, with a hilarious response. Momoa gave this interview with actress Isabela Merced, on the occasion of the promotion of the film ‘Sweet Girl’ in which both star. This film premieres on Netflix on August 20. The film tells the story of a man who seeks revenge on those responsible for the murder of his wife...

The actor has given an interview to Vanity Fair magazine as the new face of the fragrance Luna Rossa Ocean by Prada and in it he has admitted that “More and more I find that bathing is less necessary, sometimes”. Gyllenhaal believes that reducing the time spent under the tap also improves your skin: “There is a whole world in not bathing that is also very useful for maintaining the skin, we wash ourselves naturally.” He also adds that, when he has no choice but to go through the shower, he prefers to use natural and natural pumpkin or cucumber sponges: “It seems that they had been made in a factory, but, in fact, they have not, since I was young. I find it amazing. ” Of course, this cleaning has nothing to do with oral hygiene and brushing your teeth is unforgivable: “Good manners and bad breath get you nowhere.” Is in fashion But Gyllenhaal is by no means alone in this battle...

Israel is the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur for frivolous fashion, effective six months from now, Humane Society International reports. The news comes ahead of the G7 summit where world leaders are gathered and activists have urged the UK and US governments to ban fur sales. Environmental protection minister, Gila Gamliel, who passed the ban into law, issued a statement after the occasion, “The fur industry causes the deaths of hundreds of millions of animals worldwide, and inflicts indescribable cruelty and suffering. Using the skin and fur of wildlife for the fashion industry is immoral and is certainly unnecessary. Animal fur coats cannot cover the brutal murder industry that makes them. Signing these regulations will make the Israeli fashion market more environmentally friendly and far kinder to animals.” Israel’s ban allows for the use of fur in “scientific research, education or instruction, and for religious purposes or tradition.” The ban allows for the use of shtreimels, which are fur hats traditionally worn on holidays and Shabbat by Orthodox men. What will Fashion Week 2050 be like? Hopefully, it will have less plastic. Sixty percent of clothing made today have plastic microfibers. Clothing accounts for a third of microplastic pollution. Popular fabrics polyester, nylon, and acrylic are all made partly with plastic. And like a lot of other plastics, these fibers end up in oceans. Some end up there just from normal daily wear. But the majority is from the washing machine and laundry. The fashion industry is known to be incredibly polluting. But plastic has become a top concern. 8 million tons of microplastics are washed into the oceans annually. Research found for an average washing machine load, up to 700,000 fibers are released into our water supply from clothes in the washer. So to prevent plastic from entering water, we must remove it from our clothing. Scientists are looking to nature to figure out how to make fabrics in a more sustainable way. Mushrooms, eucalyptus, and pineapple are just some of the natural places our clothing could come from in the future. And all of these are...

What we choose to wear and how we choose to wear it provides an inexhaustible flow of information about the modern human society. Historians of human culture know the importance of looking toward the style of dress across different time periods and different cultures in order to better understand the values and lifestyles held by their wearers. Our personal fashion also says a lot about us, and helps us present who we are — or who we want to be seen as — to our audience, whether that audience is a potential friend, potential employer, or potential significant other. Much of our life will be shaped by the various styles that lay the foundation for an entire industry of fashion. And as much as fashion choices can enrich our own lives, fashion that isn’t consumer conscious can have grave negative effects on the lives of others. This becomes quite apparent when we look at what sort of materials are considered essential in the high-end competitive fashion world, what we see celebrities promoting through use every day. These “materials” — such...
hello.com Gigi Hadid’s triumphant return to the runway six months after being a mom If 2020 was the year of Gigi Hadid, she expanded the family with Zayn Malik by giving birth to little Khai, their first daughter together, 2021 could well follow in her footsteps. The model, who has stayed away from her profession due to the health crisis, would be back, 100%! As well as other of her professional colleagues -Elsa Hosk, for example-, they prefer to take their return calmly, selecting only certain jobs, the oldest of the Hadid goes with everything. In addition to having starred in photographic campaigns -for which her mother Yolanda took care of the baby-, this week she would be living a nostalgic moment since she has climbed (again and finally) on a catwalk. And yes, it would be a special occasion not only because it was the first time that she walked after becoming a mother, but because after the cancellation of events and fashion weeks around the world, fashion would be beginning to recover again. People are buying more secondhand clothing than ever before and the trend is only going to increase. The latest research projects that over the next 10-years the second-hand clothing industry will more than triple in value. It is expected to grow from $28 billion in 2019 to $80 billion by 2029. This trend is welcomed news to those concerned with the impacts of a growing clothing and textile industry. The fashion industry has a large carbon footprint and accounts for 10% of global human-emitted greenhouse gasses. This is due to long and often spread out supply lines in addition to the emissions from the production of garments. 20% of industrial water pollution comes from the treatment and dying of clothing as well. The environmental impacts of the fashion industry are in addition to the numerous human rights concerns regarding the treatment of textile workers in factories across the globe. Both the human rights abuses and environmental impacts decrease the more people purchase their clothing secondhand in lieu of buying new garments, however. News that more people are purchasing second-hand...
Kalani Sitake teased that his sense of style includes clothing given to him for free and that has some form of “BYU” branded on it. The Cougars coach just isn’t into fashion or statements. That’s why any assertion that No. 8 BYU needs to beat North Alabama, a 47 1/2-point underdog, with “style points” on Saturday at home to impress voters wasn’t exactly an in vogue notion for him. “We want to be at our best and whatever the scoreboard shows, I think if we’re at our best, we can live with the results,” Sitake said. “Whatever happens and how everybody evaluates it, they can see it however they want.” With another strong showing, the Cougars (8-0) can make a compelling case for a high ranking by the selection committee, which will release the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season on Tuesday. After that, it’s the waiting game. At the moment, the Cougars aren’t scheduled to take the field again until Dec. 12 against San Diego State. That’s a long layoff and another reason...

Fox News host Chris Wallace batted aside Donald Trump’s boast that he “aced” a cognitive test at Walter Reed hospital, telling the president that he took it too and “It’s not the hardest test.” With the president challenging presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden to go down and take the test with him, the Fox News host pulled the president up and smiled as he pointed out there is little to be about for passing such a simple series of exercises. “I took the [cognitive] test too, when I heard you passed it,” Wallace said as a shot of the test scrolled on the screen for the viewers. “It’s not the hardest test. It shows a picture and it says, ‘what’s that,’ and it’s an elephant.” “No, no,” Trump snapped back. “You see that’s all misrepresentation.
