Every cat owner has a story to tell of being blanked by their cat: We call to our cat, it turns away, and some of us might be left wondering why we didn’t get a dog. But your cat may be listening after all. More than that, it cares more than you may think. A study by French researchers that was published last month in the journal Animal Cognition found that not only do cats react to what scientists call cat-directed speech — a high-pitched voice similar to how we talk to babies — they react to who is doing the talking. “We found that when cats heard their owners using a high-pitched voice, they reacted more than when they heard their owner speaking normally to another human adult,” said Charlotte de Mouzon, an author of the study and cat behavior expert at the Université Paris Nanterre. “But what was very surprising in our results was that it actually didn’t work when it came from a stranger’s voice.” Unlike with dogs, cat behavior is difficult to study, which is part...

GRANT HENRY: Every dollar Terry Rowland had saved of his lifetime was stacked into a large Tupperware container: $82,373. At 79, he was aging and worried about keeping cash on hand. So during one of his daughter’s visits – her name was Rebecca Brown – he asked her to open a joint bank account. Now Rebecca was catching a flight home from Pittsburgh early the next day, and she said she didn’t have time to stop by a bank, so she would just take the cash with her. She confirmed on a government website that it is legal to carry any amount of cash on a domestic flight. And so she tucked this 82 grand into her carry-on. But just minutes before departure, a DEA agent met her at a busy gate and questioned her about...
Apple has quietly confirmed that the much-anticipated rollout of its iOS 15.4 update is coming sometime next week.  iOS 15.4, which has been tested in beta since January, will allow iPhone users to unlock their smartphone while wearing a mask.  It also includes 37 new emoji, including a pregnant man, a motorcycle tyre, a slide, a disco ball, a troll with a club, coral, kidney beans and a low battery. There's also a new 'gender neutral' voice for its smart assistant Siri, called Quinn, recorded by a member of the LGBTQ+ community.   Apple's confirmation follows the unveiling of new products on Tuesday, including the third generation phone in its 'budget' iPhone SE line, starting at £419 ($429).  Since the start of the pandemic, getting Face ID to automatically recognise our face to unlock our iPhones has been a bugbear as we've had masks over our faces. Todd Rokita coordinated the letter from 17 attorney generals to Biden and Garland Republican attorney generals representing 17 states have signed a letter to President Joe Biden and Merrick Garland demanding that parents be guaranteed the freedom to speak their minds at school board meetings. On Monday attorney generals pushed back, urging Secretary of State Garland to guarantee the freedom of speech. The letter was coordinated by Todd Rokita, the attorney general of Indiana. 'Concerned parents passionate about their kids' education are not terrorists,' he said.  'The Biden administration and its special-interest allies need to dial down the rhetoric and respect the rights of parents to be heard.' Rokita's letter drew the support of the attorney generals of Texas, South Carolina, Utah, Oklahoma, Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, among others. He said he was determined that 'Hoosiers' - people from Indiana - should be allowed to express themselves freely.  'Hoosier parents have a First Amendment right to speak their minds to teachers, administrators and school board members,' he said.  'That's why I'm demanding that the Biden administration immediately stop attempting to shut...
Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images A Tuesday piece in The Athletic on the Kyrie Irving Covid vaccination saga prompted widespread disbelief and mockery on Twitter. On Tuesday morning Irving, who is not vaccinated against the virus, was prohibited by the Brooklyn Nets from participating in all team activities. “Kyrie has made a personal choice, and we respect his individual right to choose,” said Nets general manager Sean Marks in a statement. “Currently the choice restricts his ability to be a full-time member of the team, and we will not permit any member of our team to participate with part-time availability.” According to sources cited by The Athletic, the star guard is not anti-vaccine, but “he is upset that people are losing their job due to vaccine mandates.” Multiple sources with direct knowledge of Kyrie Irving’s decision have told The Athletic that Irving is not anti-vaccine and that his stance is that he is upset that people are losing their jobs due to vaccine mandates. The captain of the Afghanistan women's team has called on FIFA to help 'save' her team-mates from the Taliban after the country fell to the Islamist group.   The future of Afghan women remains uncertain after the Taliban took control of capital city Kabul earlier this week, with women's rights severely suppressed when the group last ruled the country between 1996 and 2001.  Previously, Afghan women were not allowed to work, study, or be treated by male doctors unless accompanied by a male chaperone. Individuals who violated the sexist laws were imprisoned, publicly flogged, and even executed. And with the lives of many of her football team-mates under threat, national team captain Shabnam Mobarez, 25, who is currently residing in the United States, has asked the world football governing body to intervene in the situation in her home country.  Recalling a conversation with one of her peers on Twitter, Mobarez posted her interpretation of the conversation, which started with her saying: '“are you okay?” Afghanistan women's team captain Shabnam Mobarez has made a plea to FIFA to help her team-mates in the...

As a former police officer whose campaign ads recount what he says was his own mistreatment by police as a teenager, Adams, should he win, could immediately become the national voice we need — asserting that minority communities especially need the presence of police to beat back the crime that brings fear and tragedy to daily life. In its desire for expansion, the American company wants to be more inclusive and more responsive to the new desires of its users. Disagreement is constantly evolving and diversifying. In its early days, the creators of Discord (Stanislav Vishnevsky and Jason Citron) saw their software as a forum for mutual assistance and video games. Since 2015, a lot of things have changed. With the pace of epidemics, remote voice chat has gained considerable importance in our lifestyles. Summary has become a kind of 2.0 forum, a place to study, have parties, get new interests or offer advice. To continue to nurture and satisfy its growing community, the American company is considering new forms, while remaining true to the “random and unpredictable disagreement” desired in user feedback. The US company now offers “Stage Discovery”, which allows you to explore these events...

As per the instructions of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Bill & Keep Rule 2021 will come into force in the country from January 1, 2021. This puts an end to interconnected usage charges (IUCs) for domestic voice calls to all other networks. In recognition of its commitment to a complete overhaul of off-net domestic voice calls once IUC charges are discontinued, Geo has announced that all off-net domestic voice calls will be free from January 1st. In September 2019, when the deadline for implementing the Troy Bill & Keep rule was extended to January 1, 2020, Geo had no choice but to charge off-net voice calls from customers. In doing so, Troy assured Geo users that these charges would only continue until IUC stopped charging. Today, Geo has kept that promise and made off-net voice calls free again. Geo is committed to turning ordinary Indians into beneficiaries of innovative technologies such as VoLTE. “All our users can now enjoy free voice calls with Geo,” Geo said in a statement. Vocal training can be done with a speech therapist or on apps. FatCamera/Getty Images Transfeminine people can use methods like vocal therapy and vocal training apps to make their voices sound more feminine. NBC Sports HEDMAN with a shaaawwwwwwwt! Over the past few weeks I’ve gone to bed with that hollered phrase, or something akin to it, ping-ponging around in my brain. They came courtesy of Mike “Doc” Emrick, NBC’s lead hockey announcer who called most of the Tampa Bay Lightning playoff contests, including Monday night’s Game 6 that saw the Bolts win their second Stanley Cup championship. It was Tampa Bay’s first major sports title since the Lightning’s in 2004. GOURDE with a shaaawwwwwwwt! Am I getting on your nerves a little? Perhaps you’re among the Tampa Bay area residents who, like me, don’t watch hockey unless it involves the Lighting—and then mostly when they’re in the playoffs. [Let us pause here … “Fuck yeah, LIGHTNING! Congrats!] Let me say first that Doc Emrick is amazing. He’s 74 years old. No one that age—or any age, really—should be able to talk as incessantly, with as much energy, precision and volume, as Emrick does during a hockey telecast. And you can argue that no one should be allowed to. He has a shrill,...
Melanie McFarland September 14, 2020 11:38PM (UTC) Paris Hilton is no dumb celebutante. Among the many misconceptions the Hilton heiress, ur-social media influencer and businesswoman is hoping will be cleared by the new biographical documentary "This Is Paris," that may be the foremost. Don't let the infantilized voice, the tuned-up smile, the vacuous catchphrases ("that's hot"; "loves it") overshadow the fact that she's constructed a multi-million dollar brand attached to more than 19 products generating billions in worldwide sales. : Or that she commands a reported $1 million for each of her DJ gigs. Before the pandemic hit, she was spending more than 70 percent of her time on the road promoting her makeup, her accessories, or headlining gigs. That's not the work of a fool. On the contrary, Hilton refers to her "brand" countless times throughout the film, because the brand is who she is. The brand is quite literally her life. And the documentary shows her coming to terms with the twinned notions of what it means to be a character and a brand, the quandary within...
Give them their due, Meghan and Harry appear to have played a blinder with their Netflix deal. We have wondered about the valuation they place on their celebrity: it turns out to be about £100 million, if reports are to be believed. No wonder they bet the £11 million, nine-bedroom, 17-bathroom Californian house on it. We don’t know what audiences will make of their documentaries of hope and inspiration but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can afford to get professionals in to make the shows, plus a ton of liberal money is moving towards the causes they support. It might irritate their critics but wokeness is commercial. The exiled couple are a triumph of their own narrative. They have taken to heart the guidance of the self-help guru Brené Brown: ‘You either walk into your story and own your truth, or you live outside of your story, hustling for your worthiness.’ Celebrity is an act of faith. The British tend to say: ‘It is for other people to judge.’ Americans have been quicker to understand that a new world...

Harry Shearer, 76, the voice of Dr Hibbert, Mr Burns and Ned Flanders on The Simpsons, said actors should be able to play outside their own experience, “The job of the actor is to play someone who they are not.” 5Harry Shearer, 76, stepped down from the role of Dr Hibbert on The Simpsons amid Black Lives Matter protests around the USCredit: Getty Images - Getty The longest-running television series confirmed in June, under renewed pressure from the Black Lives Matter movement, that it would “no longer have white actors voice non-white characters.” The move followed years of public criticism about the Fox television show’s “stereotyped” Indian convenience store character Apu, who is voiced by Hank Azaria. Two months after the shows decision, Shearer appeared to criticize the move, “I have a very simple belief about acting. The job of the actor is to play someone who they are not,” he told Times Radio. “That’s the gig,...
Amazon is working on a new feature for its Alexa voice assistant that will let the software launch Android and iOS apps using voice commands, a first for Amazon’s assistant and a bold expansion of its strategy to position Alexa as a platform-agnostic alternative to Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant. Called Alexa for Apps, the new feature is launching today in preview form, meaning Amazon is working with select developers on how they’d like to make use of it. For instance, Amazon imagines users on either an iPhone or an Android device asking Alexa to open Twitter and search for a hashtag, and the app would then let the companion Alexa skill do the work of launching the app and inputting the search term. The results would then show up on the phone instead of being read aloud. Another example Amazon gives is using a voice request to launch TikTok and start a hands-free video recording (in the event you’re filming yourself). It’s a new type of interaction Amazon is hoping could catch on and help better position...
