AUTHORITIES have issued a warning about Christmas scams targeting online shoppers with fake toys and electronics that can overheat and explode. The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) and the FBI have come together to warn Americans of the danger of buying counterfeit products online. 2Authorities are warning about online scams during the holidaysCredit: Getty “For most, the holidays represent a season of goodwill and giving, but for criminals, it’s the season to lure in unsuspecting holiday shoppers,” said IPR Center Director Matt Allen. According to the agencies, counterfeit electronics can overheat and explode, while bicycle helmets can break upon impact because they are not subject to federal regulations. “Counterfeit and knockoff toys sold by unreputable sellers are highly unlikely to comply with strict toy safety laws that are designed to protect children at play," said Steve Pasierb, president & CEO of The Toy Association. "These fake, non-compliant products might have small parts that can break off, may not be age-graded appropriately, or may pose other risks to children," he added. New York (CNN Business)Online shopping used to be the one part of the economy where prices would reliably fall. Covid has changed that.Online prices rose in November for the 18th month in a row, Adobe said Thursday. And not only is inflation suddenly a force in the e-commerce world -- it's a growing one. Online prices are up by 3.5% from a year ago, the biggest 12-month increase since Adobe began tracking this metric in 2014. As holiday shoppers rush to fill online shopping carts, senators on both sides of the aisle said Tuesday that additional measures must be taken to protect consumers from potentially hazardous counterfeit products.  Third-party online retailers, who often advertise on social media, can make it difficult for consumers to differentiate between real and counterfeit products, said Sen. Last month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized hundreds of Lagori 7 Stones toys, a popular game in which kids toss a ball at seven stacked, square stones to knock them down. A lab analysis found the toys were coated in lead, cadmium and barium — heavy metals that can impair the brain and nervous system, make breathing difficult and lead to numbness and paralysis. Last year, the European Commission issued safety alerts about counterfeit L.O.L. Surprise! dolls containing phthalates, a chemical that softens plastic but is also an endocrine disruptor that can impact the reproductive and immune systems. The chemical also was found in counterfeit Disney Frozen II dolls. Clip Clop Infant Activity rattles were recalled in April by the Consumer Product Safety Commission because the plastic handle could come loose, freeing small beads that could choke a baby if swallowed. The trumpet toy in the Janod Confetti Live Musical Set was recalled in January because small parts could come loose and do the same. But both recalled toys could be found on e-Bay this holiday season. “As...

Toys on sale at a Wal-Mart location in Burbank, Calif.Patrick T. Fallon | Bloomberg | Getty Images Before each holiday season, Walmart gathers hundreds of kids at a convention center near its Arkansas headquarters. The young testers try out lots of toys and pick those they would like to get from Santa. That shapes the retailer's list of top toys and determines which ones it orders in abundance. This year, the company mailed toys to several dozen kids to test at home instead. It's just one example of how the coronavirus pandemic has changed norms for the holiday season — even before it's truly begun. The retailer's preparations for holiday toy shopping look different this year, said Brad Bedwell, merchandising director of preschool toys and omni merchandising. Walmart had to come up with the workaround for its toy testing group to compile its list of top-rated toys. It developed an online tool that lets kids virtually unbox, test and play with toys since multiple kids can't wheel around the same truck or play with the same doll in store aisles or at demos due to...

Those strong sales continued in April, with a 22% pop from the previous year. Construction sets like Lego grew in popularity with adults and kids.
