An Oscar-winning producer has slammed Will Smith and Chris Rock for robbing his film, and documentary category as a whole, of its moment to shine last Sunday night at the Academy Awards. 'I think what Will did was selfish,' Summer of Soul producer Joseph Patel wrote Wednesday in a since-deleted Twitter thread, claiming Smith slapping Rock 'robbed the category of its moment.' 'It robbed the other excellent and amazing films of their moment to be acknowledged in what was a STRONG year for docs,' Patel claimed. 'And it robbed Summer of Soul and our team of our moment. Of a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a celebrated film.' Patel also accused Rock of being an 'absolute f*****g d**k' for allegedly making a racially insensitive remark when he announced Summer of Soul had won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.  When Rock announced the award, he reportedly said the winner was 'Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and four white guys,' ignoring Patel's south Asian heritage.  'I'm angry,' he wrote. 'Angry at Will Smith. Angry at Chris Rock. Angry for me. Angry for Ahmir. Angry for...
A doctor was hit and killed by his own Mercedes while chasing down the carjackers who stole the car. Intensive care unit Dr. Rakesh Patel, 33, of Silver Springs, Maryland, had his car stolen on Vernon Street in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington DC on Tuesday around 8pm. Patel had left his car running when he got out to give a package to his girlfriend Rachel Lincoln. As the couple embraced, at least one carjacker jumped inside the doctor's car and sped off.  Patel ran after them but was run over by the thief when he caught up with them on corner of Florida Avenue and 18th Street, a busy intersection surrounded by row houses and shops. He was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital.  Lincoln described the moment as 'a nightmare,' as she witnessed her boyfriend's final moments, and now his family is left grieving over the senseless killing.  '[He died] for what? A car?' his mother Charulatta Patel told NBC Washington. 'I always used to call him my baby.'  Scroll down for video ...
A 33-year-old Maryland man was killed by his own car when a thief jumped behind the wheel in Washington DC — and the suspect remains at large, authorities said. Patel was struck at the intersection of 18th Street and Florida Avenue, Northwest, as the driver started to pull away, police said. The suspect then fled the scene in Patel's car. Patel was taken to a local hospital where he later died.    Police are offering rewards of up to $1,000 for anyone with information regarding the incident. The car has an Ohio license plate of EVB5183. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text a tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
Indecision’s final HOLIDAYS in France set to come off the “amber-plus” quarantine list. Spain to be kept off the list. Covid cases down for a fifth day in a row. So why is it difficult to react with unbridled enthusiasm? 1With his approval rating ebbing away, Boris Johnson had better get clear on virus guidanceCredit: Getty For that, the blame must lay squarely at the feet of the Government, which has made such a hash of its virus guidance over a prolonged period. Christmas was on, then off. Freedom Day became Freedom Delay. Vaccine passports, once an inconceivable imposition, are now firmly on the table. Holiday destinations pop in and out of risk lists almost faster than planes can get there. When there’s a new Covid policy along every day, who can blame the public for becoming less and less compliant? It’s not helped when the reasons for rules are muddled, poorly explained or simply non-existent. Take the latest suggestion that football fans will need to be double-jabbed to get into stadiums holding over 20,000. So transmission...
What happens when a country loses interest in protecting itself? That’s what we are living through in America today. COVID-19 has killed 600,000 Americans. Yet the U.S. government and top American leaders have generally been passive, or even uninterested, in learning how it all started. How can that be? It’s almost unimaginable that every single American would not want to find out the truth. That so few do is just another example of the sad place we find ourselves. Six hundred thousand dead Americans? Ho-hum. That’s the attitude nationally. The debate about the origins of COVID-19 is not purely an intellectual one. Learning how this deadly disease started is crucial to preventing it from recurring. The dominant theory early on, rapidly declining in likelihood, was that the disease passed from a bat to people through a Chinese outdoor food market. If this were true, then we may want to pressure China even more than we already are to clean those markets up and to reform some of their dangerous practices. If, on the other hand, the disease escaped from a...

One of the most memorable scenes in the “Hunger Games” books and movies is when the poor kids from the outer districts take the train into the glimmering capital. There they see affluence and decadence completely foreign to them in their poor, hyperregulated homelands. It’s all fiction, of course, but it’s not too far from what we are actually seeing in coronavirus-ridden America in 2020. In case after case, we are seeing public officials completely flout the rules they are imposing on their own constituents. It’s never been clearer that we are devolving into some sort of tiered society with different laws and regulations depending on your station in life. Politicians and top business executives can fly around on private planes, book private dinners and continue with their lives, while regular Americans see stricter and stricter lockdowns and mandates. French Laundry was for years heralded as America’s finest restaurant. A fixed-price dinner starts at $300 per person and can easily hit $1,000 per person with wine pairings. After locking down his state with all sorts of onerous coronavirus restrictions, including...
President Donald Trump said during Tuesday night's first presidential debate that fraud has already been "established" as a risk with mail-in voting, citing a recent race between two Democrats. What are the details? As the debate began to wrap up, Trump pushed back on Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's claim that "no one has established at all that there is fraud related to mail-in ballots. That somehow it's a fraudulent process." "It's already been established," the president replied. "Take a look at Carolyn Maloney's race," Trump suggested to moderator Chris Wallace. "Look at Carolyn Maloney. They have no idea what happened." President Trump was not able to elaborate as Wallace returned the floor to Biden, who said that the president "has no idea what he's talking about." SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- It seems there is more of a focus on sanitation and wiping down surfaces as opposed to ways people can effectively combat COVID-19.We asked ABC7 Special Correspondent Dr. Alok Patel if there seems to be more of a focus on cleaning things. Companies are putting out advertisements on how they're committed to cleanliness."There's like a false hope that businesses are sending out. Like 'Oh my gosh, we cleaned every single day, therefore, you can come here and never get coronavirus,' when we know that's not true," Dr. Patel said.VIDEO: A professional cleaner gives best tips to clean and disinfect your home and officeEMBED More News Videos A professional cleaner gives best tips to clean and disinfect your home and office Dr. Patel said there seems to be a fixation on reports that the virus can survive on surfaces, which is why everyone is concerned about their food packages or mail, but that's not the primary way people will catch it."One thing we have to remember is the primary way you're going to catch this is not...
BRITS desperate regain normality and book a summer holiday await the publication of the list of 'air bridge' countries. But home secretary Priti Patel has urged people not to rush into booking holidays and wait for the government to finalise agreements. 2Priti Patel said on June 28 that deals would be published "in the next few days"Credit: 2020 Elliott Franks When will the government make an announcement on air bridges? Air bridges will mean that people can travel abroad again, eight weeks after Boris Johnson announced a quarantine on all arrivals to the UK. Initially, it was thought that the announcement would be made this weekend, but Priti Patel said on June 28 that deals would be published "in the next few days". No10 is due to today announce the first list of destinations it has struck deals with including France, Spain and Greece.
