Many brands are nodding to the Lunar New Year this year, and our favorite cookware brand, Our Place, is no exception. Hot off the heels of a collaboration with Selena Gomez, the latest Lunar New Year launch on our radar is from the on-trend kitchenware brand, Our Place. Though known for their industry-disrupting, multi-functional pots and pans, the latest release also includes beautiful rabbit-themed tableware designed by artist and illustrator Vanilla Chi. The limited-edition Always Pan and Perfect Pot (the brand’s two hero products) are a deep lacquer red called Firecracker. The duo can do “everything from boiling to baking, crisping to steaming” and are made with nontoxic, nonstick ceramic coating; they go from stovetop to table seamlessly. The design incorporates useful features like pour spouts and locking lids, and includes accessories like wooden spatulas and a stainless steel steamer basket. Both pieces can be purchased together at a discounted price. I really can’t get enough of the mesmerizing artist’s design of...
To anyone wanting to give themselves a healthy makeover for 2023, my advice is simple: avoid kicking off with a detox. At this time of year you see adverts springing up with claims to ‘purify’ or detoxify your body with this or that special tea, supplement or juice diet. These products are not only unnecessary, but when it comes to weight loss in particular, they may have the reverse of the desired effect. I don’t want to demotivate anyone who wants to be healthier — and I have suggestions to help with that, which evidence shows will work. So let me first explain why detoxes don’t. To anyone wanting to give themselves a healthy makeover for 2023, my advice is simple: avoid kicking off with a detox, writes Dr Megan Rossi (pictured)  Our bodies come across toxins on a regular basis — in our food, from pollutants, even in the form of medication. But we have very sophisticated detoxification processes to deal with these. A lot of the burden falls on the liver. It breaks down toxins such as alcohol...

But his budding talent has led one company to offer him a sponsorship, as he "might be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger." The bodybuilding family also includes his brother Oliver, 14, who hits the gym almost every day of the week. Their dad, Steven Johnston, 47, first urged Kerry to try bodybuilding when the couple started going out 18 years ago, but she was too shy. Now, Steven keeps her strict training regime...
The top source of ocean oil pollution is surprisingly not tankers, pipelines, or even offshore rigging– it’s our cars. Source: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park/YouTube According to a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, all of the petroleum that is spilled from leaky oil tankers, broken pipelines, and toppled drilling rigs do not even compare to the amount that washes into the oceans from land-based sources, including motor vehicles. The report found that from 2010 to 2019, land-based sources leaked an estimated 1.2 million metric tons of petroleum each year. They found that 380 tons were spilled per year from pipelines, 200 tons from tank vessel spills, and 66,500 tons from platforms and other activities. “The top source of oil in the ocean is land-based runoff, at an estimated volume up to 20 times higher than was reported two decades ago. Most of this pollution occurs through water from rain or snowmelt carrying oil, primarily from cities and vehicles, to rivers and ultimately into the ocean,” a press release about the report said....
Michael Fawcett has lost weight and gained a few grey hairs since quitting royal service, and the double-breasted suits, Turnbull & Asser shirts and silk 'pochette' squares that were once his sartorial trademark are now confined to their wardrobe. While his old boss, King Charles, travelled to Birkhall to mourn and reflect on his sudden elevation to the throne, the monarch's former aide and sometime toothpaste-squeezer was pounding the suburban pavements near his home in South-West London. Wearing tracksuit bottoms, a T-shirt and scuffed white trainers, the unemployed 59-year-old seemed alone with his thoughts as he walked his labradoodle in the streets around the red-brick home he shares with wife Debbie shortly after 9am on Thursday. Time was when his principal form of exercise involved striding across deep-pile carpets in tasselled loafers, attending to great affairs of state. Now his daily tasks include posting letters, buying milk, and picking up dog mess in a black plastic bag. It wasn't supposed to be like this. For much of his professional life, which spanned almost four decades, Fawcett was being groomed for...
(CNN)When you walk out the door to start your day, you might not know that you are taking part in something that defines us as human -- and something that our ancestors have been doing for 7 million years, according to new research. Researchers looked at a femur and two ulna arm bones of Sahelanthropus tchadensis, one of the earliest known human ancestors, and found signs that they walked on two feet -- also known as bipedalism, according to a new study published Wednesday in Nature. "Our oldest known representatives were practicing bipedalism (on the ground and on the trees)," said study author Franck Guy, a research fellow at Université de Poitiers in France. The remnants of the ancient beings show that bipedalism emerged soon after chimpanzees and human ancestors diverged on their evolutionary tracks, he added. There is even more to be found in these fossils. Their characteristics show that Sahelanthropus tchadensis also maintained the ability to climb trees proficiently, according to the study. Identity of mystery fossils found in Chinese cave revealed by DNA analysisThese ancestors were...
Every day, around a thousand people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. And although those dealt this blow come from all walks of life, they will be united by one terrifying question: is there a cure? The answer isn’t simple because cancer isn’t a simple disease — there are more than 200 types. Though they share a common mechanism — the rapid division of abnormal cells, which then destroy healthy tissue — there are multiple variables, from genetics to where the disease occurs in the body, that help determine your chance of survival. Consequently some forms — such as skin or testicular cancer — have, when detected early, a ten-year survival rate of 98 per cent. For others the prognosis is more bleak. For pancreatic cancer — which is very difficult to detect, meaning it has more time to spread and become resistant to treatment — the five year survival rate is 7 per cent, with 90 per cent of patients dying within two years of diagnosis. Yet with so much global brain power devoted to waging war on...
A five-year-old New Hampshire boy awoke Sunday morning to see a fire on his family’s property and promptly alerted his parents, allowing the family to evacuate the home and save their farm animals. Five-year-old Aksel Jalava of Swanzey woke up at 7:30 in the morning to see flames outside of his family’s home, WBZ reported. The old workshop they use for storage had caught ablaze. Posted by Swanzey Fire Department on Sunday, March 20, 2022 “I [woke] up because I was hungry. And I thought it was an orange light, but it was the fire,” Aksel told the outlet. “I went to tell Daddy… I said, ‘Come and look at this.'” Aksel’s father, Bryan, said there was a calmness about his five-year-old’s tone. “There was just something in his voice, in his calmness, that wasn’t like, ‘I’m hungry,’ or whatever. He was just like, ‘Dad, you got to see this,'” said Bryan, a corporal for the Windham County Sheriff’s Office in Vermont. “It was just a miracle. It would’ve spread to the house. If it was 15 minutes later, the...
Welcome to 2022. As far as years go, 2021 was not an easy one, and many of us are still mourning loved ones we’ve lost. We’ve faced both fear and depression, given the ongoing pandemic, and are now being challenged by yet another wave of disease. No matter the obstacles we face in the year ahead, we must remember that other generations had troubles as well. Our ancestors survived, leaving us with a gift that transcends both time and trouble: The gift of music. Music that inspires. Music that heals. Music that challenges us to do better. Music that gives us the strength to soldier on, and when necessary, to fight back.  My resolution for 2022 is to share as much of that music as I can here on #BlackMusicSunday, in the hope that you will pass it on to others who may just need one simple melody, or lyric to get them through another day. Remember: This series began—back in April 2020—as a way to provide you, dear reader, with a musical break from the misery that was the very beginning of this pandemic. Music...

Here’s a rundown of the 10 most-read The Daily Beast exclusives in the last year:1.Many of our stories about Matt Gaetz’s sex scandal went viral, but none more than this one revealing that the congressman’s wingman, Joel Greenberg, had written a letter to Roger Stone in which he said Gaetz had paid to have sex with a string of women—and a 17-year-old girl. “My lawyers that I fired, know the whole story about MG’s involvement,” Greenberg wrote a year ago. “They know he paid me to pay the girls and that he and I both had sex with the girl who was underage.” 2.Our media team is so good that reporters at other outlets often find out what’s happening in their shop from our stories. There are already signs that the current situation may not be as bleak as previously predicted. The results of five studies published last week – three of which were British – point in the same direction: Omicron may be less deadly than previous variants. The concern is, of course, what will happen in the coming weeks in hospitals. Even if a small percentage of the 120,000 plus daily Covid cases become sick enough to need intensive treatment, that’s still a very large number – perhaps large enough to overwhelm the NHS. Some are still forecasting a ‘tidal wave’ of hospital cases which, according to reports, have already begun to swamp some NHS wards. Health chiefs are yet to rule out Government scientists’ bleak predictions of 10,000 Covid-19 hospitalisations a day by the end of January, and 6,000 daily deaths. Yet speaking to The Mail on Sunday, some of the UK’s leading hospital medics remain optimistic – and insist predictions of January 2020 levels of disaster are unlikely to come to fruition. The prevailing message is that however bad the situation...
“IT matters to us,” says Brandon Flowers on winning SFTW’s album of the year. “We like it,” he tells me. 4'It matters to us,' says Brandon Flowers, centre, on winning SFTW’s album of the year. 4Making Pressure Machine has given the band a new energy that Flowers says has rejuvenated The Killers This stunning seventh studio album arrived just a year on from The Killers’ synth-pop Imploding The Mirage and was born out of the lockdown when the singer was looking back on his life, growing up in Nephi, Utah. And Pressure Machine gave them their seventh No1 in a row when it was released in August. A beautiful and intimate record, it was a more roots-driven Americana sound from the Las Vegas band with real-life stories and soundbites from Nephi locals between each song adding to the authenticity of the record. “The pandemic has allowed everyone more time for a lot of reflection and I was not spared from that. This album definitely began to bloom out of that,” Flowers reveals. “We weren’t hoping or setting out for chart-topping...
A WOMAN explained that her husband removed the door from their 14-year-old son's bedroom in order to enforce his strict "no closed doors" policy. The teenage lad was left with just an empty frame despite the fact that his mum disagreed with the policy. 1The mum explained that her husband insisted their son shouldn't have a bedroom doorCredit: Getty The husband said that he thought while the boy was under their care, they should be able to keep an eye on him. But the mum decided to reinstall the door for her son's birthday while her husband was away on a trip and he was fuming when he returned. Taking to Reddit, the anonymous woman said: "My husband believes that until he is 18, our son shouldn't conceal his room as he is under our care. "This has been one of the things straining our relationship lately, as I think that a teen should have some freedom, maybe not completely out of our site, but you know a door at least. "But my husband keeps insisting on him having almost...

Joe Biden at 2009 Kennedy Center honors with Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen. It’s time to spin some of those old Springsteen records: Daily Kos Elections is out with the 2020 presidential results for all of New Jersey’s legislative districts, where this year’s state elections will be conducted using the current map. You can find all of our district-level data nationwide at this bookmarkable permalink. The Garden State is divided into 40 legislative districts, with each electing one senator and two members of the Assembly; the districts are exactly the same (or "perfectly coterminous") for both chambers. Each party can nominate up to two candidates for the Assembly, and the top-two general election vote-getters win, which is the same system used in Arizona. Members of the lower chamber are elected to two-year terms, while the Senate is up in years ending in 1, 3, and 7. (This system, known as "2-4-4," is used in eight states.) The existing map was drawn up and first used in 2011, but it will be kept around a bit longer than planned. Last year, voters...

To help better understand these key legislative races, Daily Kos Elections is pleased to release new data breaking down the results of the 2020 presidential election for each House district, including detailed calculations for every seat. Democrats retook control of Virginia's legislature two years ago for the first time in a quarter century, aided in part by a new court-ordered House map that undid a GOP gerrymander that had been in place since 2011. Under this map, Joe Biden won 60 districts—the same number as outgoing Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam carried based on his 2017 performance,...

Following the conclusion of the 2020 elections, Daily Kos Elections updated our guide to the presidential election result by state for every election from 1828 to 2020, incorporating data from Dave Leip’s invaluable Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections. The start of that period coincides with the Democratic Party’s founding during the Andrew Jackson era, a time when almost every state had finally started holding popular votes statewide open to all white men. Many states had previously assigned electoral votes to the winner of each congressional district or simply assigned them based on a vote by the legislature. Our spreadsheet displays the vote shares for major parties and notable independents with the winning candidate shaded, as well as the raw vote counts further to the right. We’ve also added another feature we’re calling “partisanship score” that you can see to the immediate right of the vote shares for each year. This metric looks at the percentage point margin between the Democratic and Republican vote shares in a state in a given year and compares it to the national result. Take New York, for instance....

Former President Obama took to Twitter on Friday to share a New Year’s Day message of “optimism for what's to come,” saying that he believes “our best days are still ahead.” “After a year that has tested us in unimaginable ways, we've seen how people from all walks of life have stepped up to create change to make things better,” the former Democratic president wrote.  Obama then shared an article published by The Washington Post Friday describing how a group of prison inmates pooled money together to help a high school student pay for his tuition at the private Catholic school he attended.  “And here’s a story that reminds us of the power of fresh starts, community, and the good that’s in all of us, across the country and around the world,” Obama wrote, along with a link to the Post article.  And here’s a story that reminds us of the power of fresh starts, community, and the good that’s in all of us, across the country and around the world.https://t.co/zsahLYiZPT— Barack ObamaBarack Hussein ObamaTrump's regulation legacy — and what Biden...

The all new Corsa was launched in 2019 and for the first time ever it offered an electric powertrain. 3 3 It’s guilt-free, cheap to run and has a range of up to 209 miles that comfortably suits most people. After test-driving the car, Sun Motors editor, Rob Gill, said: “Good body control, direct steering, low centre of gravity, B mode for harsher braking regeneration. This thing is a lot of fun.” There are loads of reasons why you should get behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa-E, and here’s our top five… 3 The impressive range The Corsa-E can do up to an impressive 209 miles non-stop once it’s fully charged, which comfortably suits most drivers and most journeys. New York Giants: 3 players who have stood our through five weeks By: Alexander Wilson October 16, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditAfter the 2019 season concluded, the New York Giants were in desperate need of bolstering at multiple positions. Management knew that they could not proceed forward with the roster’s state, and free agents had to be a priority. Of course, the hiring of new head coach Joe Judge was the top headline, and he has done a good job putting the team in a positive direction, despite starting the year 0-5. The blame ultimately lands on youth, inexperience, and questionable schematics. Coordinator Jason Garrett has done a poor job activating his offensive weapons, and that is not because of a lack of talent. Golden Tate is best used in space and Evan Engram in the seam, but Garrett has shied away from both of those factors. Nonetheless, it is not a surprise that the Giants’ free agents have been there saving grace up to this point. Three players for the New York Giants...

Click here for a complete list of our election recommendations. It’s a rare thing in municipal elections: Every Antioch City Council seat is on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election. That leaves voters with a chance to install a completely new set of leaders. But we wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, voters should elect Councilman Lamar Thorpe as mayor, Councilwoman Joy Motts in District 1, real estate broker Michael Barbanica in District 2, homeless advocate Nichole Gardner in District 3, and Councilwoman Monica Wilson in District 4. This is the first time the city has used district elections. Other cities making the transition from at-large have generally phased in district elections over two election cycles. But Antioch is doing it all at once. Elections in Districts 1 and 4 will be for two-year terms this year and then four-year terms staring in 2022. This years’ elections for mayor and in Districts 2 and 3 are for four-year terms. It comes at a crucial time for the city. Although city finances are much improved from the extraordinarily lean years after...

I’m excited to announce that Mediaite is launching its first weekly podcast, just a few months before the 2020 presidential election. It will be called, in our best attempt at simplicity, The Interview. Not to spoil the surprise, but it will be just that: A weekly interview with the top personalities in the world that Mediaite holds dear. I will be speaking to the journalists, cable news hosts, media executives and politicians making — and sometimes writing — the headlines. The Interview will air weekly, on Thursdays, in the run-up to the November election. With the race between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden, an ongoing pandemic, protests against racial injustice and a media industry in turmoil, we’ve got a lot to talk about. I’ll be speaking with the biggest names in media and politics about these issues, and how they are personally navigating this wild year. The first episode of The Interview will air this Thursday, Aug. 17, and will feature Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who has emerged this year as one of the most-watched people on...
MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) -- A 17-year-old basketball star was shot and killed in the Bronx Sunday night, the latest victim in an uptick of gun violence across New York City.Police say Brandon Hendricks was gunned down on Davidson Avenue in Morris Heights just before midnight, shot in the neck and pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. The victim graduated from James Monroe High School last week and was described by head basketball coach Nigel Thompson as "our leader on and off the floor for the past 2 seasons.""I'm pretty certain that the bullets that took Brandon's life were not meant for him," he wrote in a social media post.
