The incident comes in the wake of mass shootings that killed more than two dozen people in California within a single week. It was reported just after 6 p.m. on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, where police were alerted by the ShotSpotter program to the sound of gunfire. Officers found spent casings at the scene but no victims. Shortly afterward, however, multiple gunshot victims were reported at Oakland-area hospitals. Three people in Washington state were shot dead at a convenience store in the early hours of Tuesday, with the gunman later killing himself. On Sunday night, authorities said a toxicology report was pending and that they did not know what substance caused the deaths. The conditions of those who were hospitalized were not available at the time of publication.
Last night's bloody rampage in Virginia that left seven dead including the shooter when a man thought to be a store manager opened fire in a Walmart brings with it another grim statistic.  There have now been seven mass shootings of such scale in the US this month alone, leaving a total of 32 people dead. The slaughter of innocent civilians in Chesapeake, VA, this week followed six other incidents just this month in which three or more people were gunned down in cold blood.  On November 19, 22-year-old gunman Anderson Aldrich opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle inside a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five people and leaving 25 injured. Less than a week earlier, a University of Virginia student thought to be Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., also 22, fatally shot three of his former UVA football teammates as they returned from a field trip.  There were also three other mass shootings in Virginia, Maryland and Florida earlier this month. But these tragic attacks constitute just three of 64 mass shootings over the course of the year so far,...

Pete Arredondo has been fired from his role as police chief of the school district in Uvalde, Texas, exactly three months after a mass shooting killed 19 students and two teachers in one of the schools in his jurisdiction. The school board vote at a meeting, which Arredondo refused to attend, was unanimous, according to early reports Wednesday evening. State and federal agencies have opened investigations into the shooting, scrutinizing the timeline of the law enforcement response. Arredondo in particular became a target of criticism over law enforcement's response to the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, especially over the question of why it took authorities more than 70 minutes before they confronted and killed the 18-year-old gunman. Nikolas Cruz's half-sister was questioned on the stand this week about her knowledge of a reality show involving the siblings' half-brother that allegedly capitalized on the Parkland school massacre.  Danielle Woodard, 35, initially avoided the question when the Florida prosecutor asked her if she was aware of the reality TV series that follows the siblings' half-brother Zachary Cruz in the time since the mass shooting.  'What does that have to do with anything, sir?' Woodard shot back to prosecutor Jeff Marcus from the stand while testifying at her brother's death penalty trial on Monday. Woodard, who is currently awaiting trial on carjacking charges, was brought into the courtroom where she testified that her 'baby brother' Nikolas Cruz came from their mother's 'polluted womb.' The prosecutor pressed Woodard, asking: 'Do you think it would be appropriate to capitalize on the murders of 14 children and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by filming, or creating a reality show based on being the brother of a mass murderer?'  The question was met with objection from the defense that was sustained...
The defense attorney for Parkland mass school shooter Nikolas Cruz urged the jury to spare his life, arguing that he was 'poisoned in the womb' from his biological mother's drinking and drug use during pregnancy and that 'his brain was irretrievably broken.' Lead public defender Melisa McNeill told jurors on Monday that 'there is no defense for this crime' committed by Cruz - who killed 17 people at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day 2018 in Parkland, Florida.  But McNeill cited brain damage linked to fetal drug and alcohol exposure as reason not to impose the death penalty.  'Because of that, his brain was irretrievably broken, through no fault of his own,' McNeill told the jury. Cruz, 23, pleaded guilty last October to committing premeditated murder at the high school, about 30 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Cruz killed 14 students and three staff members. Nikolas Cruz's attorney urged the jury to spare his life as she revealed the school shooter was 'poisoned in the womb' and that his brain was...

New York City unveiled three mass vaccination centers for monkeypox Friday with each able to dish out 1,400 doses a day — but appointments at each site ran out within an hour, signaling the high demand for the jabs. The vaccine centers are based in Brooklyn, Bronx and the Queens and began rolling out doses this Sunday. They will also offer them over the next two Sundays. The Big Apple is running the largest inoculation drive for gay or bisexual men in the country, with only Washington D.C. also aiming to jab the group. Those who got at the Brooklyn center yesterday said they had just 'got lucky', adding they knew many others waiting for doses. There is mounting concern that monkeypox could spill over into other groups — including children, older adults and pregnant women — which are more vulnerable to the disease. It does not require sex to be transmitted, and can be spread through physical contact such as touching others or a hug. Cases in America are starting to surge as well, reaching 2,891 over the weekend...

After nearly three decades, dozens of devastating mass shootings, and thousands of deaths from gun violence, Congress overcame a longstanding Republican-led blockade on gun control and finally sent a significant gun reform bill to the president’s desk. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. House passed the so-called Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The Senate—where negotiations to craft the bill took place—first passed the legislation on Thursday night. In both chambers, solid bipartisan majorities approved the bill. In the Senate, 15 GOP senators joined with all 50 Democrats to advance the bill, easily clearing the chamber’s 60-vote threshold for passing bills. In the House, where the GOP is more conservative, 14 Republican lawmakers voted with all Democrats to pass the bill by a 234 to 193 margin. The legislation that President Joe Biden will soon sign into law is hardly the comprehensive gun reform package that Democrats have been pushing to enact for decades. But the bill does make key changes to federal gun policy that advocates and experts believe will meaningfully address the nation’s epidemic of gun violence. Notably, the bill would...
