The Chicago Cubs added first basemen Eric Hosmer. Here’s how the lineup and batting order should look opening day. The Chicago Cubs couldn’t convince Anthony Rizzo to come back to the Friendly Confines, and also couldn’t get Jose Abreu to take a ride up the Red Line to the north side of Chicago. Defense attorneys Tuesday made their opening arguments in the case of a high-profile alleged serial killer, Dr. William Husel. Husel stands criminally accused of 14 murders between 2015 and 2018 for allegedly intentionally giving his patients at Mount Carmel West Hospital enough fentanyl to kill them. His attorneys do not see it that way. “First off, the doctor orders the medicine,” Husel’s defense attorney Jose Baez said. “But what you have to realize [is] in the ICU, there’s one doctor for 30 beds, so the person that coordinates the care is the nurse.” Baez is famous for his successful 2011 representation of Casey Anthony, who was accused of killing her own child. He has also been retained by high-profile defendants including former NFL star Aaron Hernandez and Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. “And there are a series of safeguards that are set up to prevent this from happening, and to actually ensure that the patient’s safety is a must,” he said. “Dr. Husel will order the medication, the nurse will either answer the order if it’s a verbal order, or retrieve...

Yankees: 3 keys to taking down Toronto on Saturday By: Alexander Wilson April 3, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditWith high hopes entering the 2021 regular season, the New York Yankees threw up an unfortunate dud on Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays. With an entire 162 game campaign, we shouldn’t be worried about the Yankees’ future, as they are set to take on Toronto on Saturday afternoon once again. However, reflecting on their Opening Day loss, the Yankees posted far too many strikeouts, totaling 13, with almost all of them coming at the beginning of the batting order. In fact, both Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton struck out three times, with Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres, and Gio Urshela totaling two each. The Yankee pitching wears solid, with Gerrit Cole lasting 5.1 innings and striking out eight batters. Aside from an unfortunate home run in a sixth inning, he looked stellar, finishing with a 3.38 ERA. The bullpen also was adequate, aside from Nick Nelson giving up a run in the 10th, but went...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Alibi Drinkery, the Lakeville bar that’s repeatedly defied Gov. Tim Walz’s executive order, most recently on New Year’s Eve, was vandalized overnight, covered in graffiti. Images taken Sunday show the bar’s windows and walls marked with spray-painted messages against the bar, President Donald Trump and fascism. Michael Padden, the attorney representing the bar’s ownership, said that there is an active police investigation. “There is video,” he said. “It appears six perpetrators were involved. We hope they are caught. No entity at this time has taken responsibility.” RELATED: 2 Minnesota Bars Face 5-Year Liquor License Suspensions For Reopening On New Year’s Eve (credit: Michael Padden) On Friday, after Alibi Drinkery opened to indoor patrons on New Year’s Eve, a temporary injunction from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was granted, converting a temporary restraining order that was granted last month. If Alibi Drinkery opens again before Jan. 10, when the governor’s executive order is set to expire, the bar could lose its liquor license for five years. Yet, on Sunday, the bar posted on Facebook,...
"Hundreds of people gather outside the U.S. Supreme Court to rally in support of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program as the court hears arguments about DACA November 12, 2019 in Washington, DC." The Trump administration has fully reinstated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in compliance with a federal judge’s ruling finding unlawfully appointed acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Sec. Chad Wolf lacked legal authority to limit the program, opening the policy to brand new applicants for the first time since 2017. In a statement posted Monday, DHS said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) would now be accepting new applications, extend shortened work permits and deportation deferrals to two years, and allow beneficiaries to once again apply for permission to travel internationally in certain cases. This is an undeniable victory for undocumented young immigrants. Truly a BFD. Folks, I’m just as shocked as you are right now. The program’s full reimplementation comes nearly six months after the Supreme Court ruled in June that the Trump administration unlawfully ended the policy. But the administration not only defied that ruling for months...
A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to fully restore an Obama-era initiative that protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation, requiring officials to open the program to new applicants for the first time since 2017. Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday that states the department will accept and adjudicate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) petitions from immigrants who qualify for the program but are not currently enrolled in it.  Garaufis also instructed officials to grant approved applicants work permits that last for two years, instead of the one-year period proposed by the Trump administration over the summer. Get Breaking News Delivered to Your Inbox An estimated one million undocumented immigrant teens and young adults who qualify for DACA on paper could soon apply for the program in the wake of Friday's order, according to lawyers who sued the Trump administration.  Johana Larios was about to leave her home to buy diapers for her...

Where’s William Barr? Actually, on Tuesday morning he was in Florida, giving a speech to the National Association of Police Organizations and, of course, posing for photos with elderly retired cops without a mask or even a token gesture toward social distancing. Last week, Barr was in St. Louis to talk about the “success” of the plan to send in federal forces to bolster local police. On Thursday, he’s heading for Indianapolis. The point is, the attorney general has not actually been invisible over the last few weeks. Neither has he been particularly quiet. He’s still out there doing what he always does—playing up the dire threat of nonexistent left-wing terrorists, while completely ignoring the actual threat from very real white supremacist militia groups. And, of course, he’s still tossing in his support behind the idea that voting by mail generates fraud, without bothering with evidence. It’s not like he’s an attorney, after all. Contribute now to take back the White House! But what Barr isn’t doing, or at least, isn’t doing so far, is sending a SWAT team to take Joe Biden...
A subcommittee of the COVID-19 Community Response Coalition issued a memo Wednesday recommending the reopening of bars in Bexar County on Nov. 2, as long as 75% of the bars commit to additional safety measures. Bars have been closed throughout the summer after a surge of COVID-19 cases in Texas. Citing a drop in hospitalizations, Gov. Greg Abbott issued an order earlier this month that allowed county judges to open bars, provided a county’s COVID-19 hospitalizations make up less than 15% of hospital capacity. The coalition’s Policy and Health Alerts Workgroup reviewed the order before making the recommendation to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. The recommendation is non-binding and the decision about how and when bars can reopen is ultimately up to Wolff. Although neighboring counties quickly moved toward opening bars, Wolff declined to opt-in until consulting with local health officials. He is expected to discuss the memo tonight during the county’s daily COVID-19 briefing. While agreeing with the decision to open bars, the group believes Abbott’s order does not include the necessary safeguards against the spread of COVID-19. “The...

Michigan movie theaters and performance venues will soon be allowed to reopen, according to an executive order signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The order, which also amends coronavirus safety mandates in schools, will allow a variety of previously closed entertainment venues, including indoor theaters, cinemas, performance venues, arcades, bingo halls, bowling centers, indoor climbing facilities and trampoline parks, to reopen statewide on October 9. “Michigan took some of the most aggressive action against COVID-19 in the country, and as a result, the health of our families and our economy are faring better than our neighbors in other states,” Whitmer said in a statement. “As a result, we are now able to reopen movie theaters and performance venues with strict safety measures in place. I know these business owners have made incredible sacrifices during this crisis to protect our families and frontline workers, and my administration will continue working to help them get back on their feet.” Capacity requirements apply based on the size of the venue. The Montgomery County Council approved some additional attractions to reopen, and it addressed requests to expand youth sports and reopen schools during their virtual meeting Monday. Bowling alleys and museums can reopen starting at 5 p.m. in Montgomery County as the council unanimously approved an executive order. Also approved is reclassifying soccer as a medium-risk sport. It was previously considered high-risk in the county. The order continues to prohibit sports tournaments unless there is a letter of approval from the county and sets a 50-person limit for all sporting events. Those with teams from outside D.C., Maryland or Virginia are also prohibited. “It’s so difficult that we’re not able to give a particular timeline,” said council member Nancy Navarro. When it comes to those upset about the continued delay of return to in-person school and expansion of sports, she said that slower is better. “A difficult as it is, it is so much better for us to continue in our approach and hopefully be able to mitigate this as much as possible,” Navarro said. Walnut Creek Businesses Get Welcome Boost from City Program WALNUT CREEK — Calicraft Brewing Co. founder Blaine Landberg didn’t expect much support from Walnut Creek officials when he proposed reopening his taproom in the Shadelands neighborhood before the pandemic had subsided. “I was expecting a bunch of red tape,” Landberg said. Instead, the two-month old Walnut Creek Rebound program helped him stay solvent. In consultation with the Downtown Business Association, the Chamber of Commerce and other local groups, city officials launched Rebound in June to help restaurants and small businesses weather the pandemic by moving outside. The program offers restaurants and retailers the opportunity to expand their footprints into blocked-off street parking spaces and private, open-air parking lots and do business outdoors while the state’s ban on indoor dining is in effect. Read More Marin County Parents...

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Despite a bar shutdown order by Gov. Greg Abbott due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several North Texas bars plan to open on Saturday. It’s part of an event called Freedom Fest and bar owners are willing to risk losing their liquor license to make a point. The owners of G Willickers Pub in Arlington say they will open in defiance of Gov. Greg Abbott’s order. They say the order is unfair and that cases of COVID-19 did not go down when bars were shut down again in June. Bar operators like Sonia Fennel of G Willickers face the threat of a 30-day liquor license suspension. She said there will be a digital thermometer greeting customers along with masks and sanitizers when the bar serves alcohol Saturday for the first time in a month. “Our customers need us. Our employees need us. Our owners need us and this is too good to let you know we can’t just sit down and not do anything,” Fennel said. The bars participating in Freedom Fest could open their doors to...
New York Yankees: Projected Opening Day batting order is scary good By: Alexander Wilson July 22, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesWith the New York Yankees finishing the final exhibition game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday evening, we can all look forward to opening day on July 23. The Washington Nationals stand between the Yankees and their first win of the revised regular season, but the team is well prepared to take on the former World Series champs. The Yankees’ sluggers have been hitting well, with Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez seeing the ball adequately and providing an offensive spark because of it. Over the last two exhibition games, Judge has hit three homers, with Sanchez also taking one deep and Luke Voit doing the same. Don’t forget about Giancarlo Stanton, who makes up for high strike-out rates with elevated home run totals. Let’s take a look at the projected lineup for the New York Yankees heading into Thursday’s opening game: 1. D.J. LeMahieu,...
New York Yankees projected Opening Day batting order is stacked By: Alexander Wilson July 5, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesThe New York Yankees began spring training 2.0 on Saturday, July 4. With a condensed 2020, regular season comes injury concerns and much more in an expected tumultuous campaign. The Yankees have dealt with injuries the past two years with their star players, specifically Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. Stanton is expected to return to the lineup as a designated hitter for Opening Day, and he is preparing to take outfield reps during summer camp. Judge, on the other hand, faced off against live pitching with Gerrit Cole on the mound, giving him some reps against one of the best arms in baseball. Judge is expected to practice regularly over the next few weeks, and manager Aaron Boone is optimistic he will return for the start of the regular season in right field. The projected batting order for the Yankees is impressive, similar to what...
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – At least one North Texas bar is standing its ground and will be opening on July 4 for an event despite the governor’s shutdown order. Chris Polone, owner of the Rail Club Live in Fort Worth, said his decision to open is not “to spit on everyone’s face or the government,” but because of a “double standard” he believes is in place due to restaurants and other businesses being allowed to stay open. He said he doesn’t sell food at his bar. “Some of my competitors are allowed to stay open because they sell food,” he said during a Facebook Live. “… Literally the only difference between us and them is you can’t order a burger with your beer at my bar.” Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered bars to close for the second time during the pandemic in effort to slow a surge in COVID-19 cases across the state. Restaurants can stay open at a 50% limited capacity. Polone said he lost over $15,000 last weekend after he had to close. He decided to open...
A Lake View Terrace man faces a court hearing in September for opening his Irish pub in South Pasadena on St. Patrick’s Day during the lock down to deter the spread of COVID-19. Joseph Patrick Griffin, 56, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Alhambra Superior Court on a misdemeanor count of violating the Los Angeles County health officer’s order. But the judge continued the arraignment to Sept. 17, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. During arraignments, defendants can make pleas. Grifffin, who was charged on June 10, faces a possible maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine if convicted, Santiago said. On March 17, Griffins of Kinsale on Mission Street opened its doors, served customers and had live entertainment, Santiago said. “Reportedly, there were dozens of customers both inside and outside,” he said. The county health order, which was issued March 16, prohibited the gathering of 50 or more people within a confined space, limited restaurants to serving food via delivery, take-out or drive-thru and closed certain businesses...
