A new year is upon us, and with it comes another Veganuary. According to the organizers of the annual campaign, one person is signing up every two seconds this January, a new record. But despite Veganuary’s rapid growth, its participants only represent a minuscule percentage of the population—even smaller than the 3 percent of Americans who already call themselves vegan—and by this time next year, many of this year’s participants will likely return to eating animal products. By all appearances, Veganuary’s growth is part of a larger pattern. An increasing number of people are experimenting with a vegan diet out of concern for the planet, the well-being of animals, and their own health. However, many ultimately become overwhelmed and give up. This includes famous celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Jenna Ortega (of Netflix’s Wednesday). Indeed, according to a 2014 study by Faunalytics, 84 percent of people who tried a plant-based diet ultimately abandoned it; a 2021 follow-up study found that 43 percent of participants lasted less than six months. Plenty of hardline vegans may disagree, but I think...
Letting meat eaters drown is ethical because of the suffering they cause to animals, an Oxford academic controversially argues.  That is unless they convert to being a vegetarian upon being saved, but even then it still might be better to let them die.  Dr Michael Plant, a philosopher focusing on happiness, and who does eat meat himself, argues that according to some moral philosophies, it can be justifiable to let people like himself die. His argument stems from a conflict of what he says are two commonly held beliefs. The first is human beings have a duty to rescue each other when doing so comes at a trivial cost.  For example, jumping into a pond to save a drowning child but ruining your clothes in the process.  The second belief, Dr Plant claims, is that it is wrong to eat meat because of the suffering animals can experience in factory farms.  Such farms often keep livestock, like chickens, in cramped, dirty conditions before they are slaughtered.  He says this conflict leaves people who subscribe to the second belief in a...
A gangster convicted for the 1980s murder of an NYPD parole officer, and connected to the death of a rookie officer, is asking for compassionate release from jail because the prison won't accommodate his vegan diet and it's causing him stress.   Lorenzo 'Fat Cat' Nichols, 63, is serving concurrent 25-years and 40-years to life sentences, but has asked a judge to release him on account of migraines he endures and the 'stress' of the prison lifestyle, according to NY Daily News. 'Although I try to stay strong, the stress is weighting me down, and has raised my blood pressure,' the drug lord said in a letter to Brooklyn Federal Court Judge Edward Korman.   Nichols reportedly sent the plea to the judge in mid-August and is currently awaiting a response.  Lorenzo 'Fat Cat' Nichols is responsible for multiple deaths, including that of NYPD parole Officer Brian Rooney, as well as involvement in the death of rookie cop Eddie Byrne RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 2 Next Matt Goss capitalises on Strictly fame as he announces plans... A vegan who drinks his own month-old urine and smears it all over his face claims his sister now hates him because of his disgusting habit. 'Open-minded' Harry Matadeen, from Hampshire, began consuming his own waste in 2016 because he was 'desperate to heal' his mental health problems. He said his urine, which he drinks 200ml of every day, left him feeling 'a new sense of peace, calm and determination' and cured him almost immediately. And the 34-year-old — who sometimes cups his own stream and splashes it on his face — claimed it's the 'secret to eternal youth'. But Mr Matadeen, who has written books about the supposed health benefits of his habit, said he has been rejected by his sister because of his so-called urine therapy. Advocates say urine, which is 90 per cent water, cures everything from autoimmune disorders to chronic pain.  But medics warn there is no proof urophagia has any benefits whatsoever. They say the practice — thought to have originated in ancient Egypt — speeds up dehydration and exposes drinkers to bacteria.  Madonna has previously...
Hundreds of thousands of people have signed up to ditch meat and dairy from their diets this January as part of a Veganuary pledge. And while vegan diets are often associated with a healthy lifestyle, this isn't always the case as supermarkets and restaurants often use the new year to launch plant-based junk foods.   So, it's easy to fall in to the expensive trap of eating heavily processed, high salt foods in January. Speaking exclusively to FEMAIL, London-based celebrity nutritionist Kate Llewellyn-Waters, author of The Immunity Cookbook and the new resident nutritionist on Channel 5's You Are What You Eat explained that many fall into the trap of not getting enough iron - but it's a myth that vegans don't get enough protein.     'Research has shown that vegans, as well as vegetarians, are at a decreased risk of various health conditions, including obesity, hypertension and certain types of cancer,' she explained. A MUM who has faced criticism for raising her baby as a vegan insists all that matters is that she's happy and healthy. Tasj Rose took to TikTok to share a video response to a comment from a follower who suggested child services needed to be called, writing over the clip: "So they can say what? That she's happy and healthy?" 2Tasj Rose took to TikTok to hit back at those criticising her for giving her baby a vegan dietCredit: @tasjrose/Tiktok She captioned the video: "She’s well cared for, happy and healthy and that’s all that matters." However, her response did little to stop equally biting comments from trolls on the video. "If that baby ever develops any health issues because of that, you're guilty of child abuse - you're incriminating yourself," one person wrote. "I don’t agree with this. Just because ur vegan u don’t have to force your baby to be vegan too," another added. In another video, Tasj insisted "there’s nothing she needs from meat that she can’t get from something else". She...
VEGAN activists are trying to ban a nativity procession — because it features a live camel. The Christmas parade is a favourite for families who line the street to see Mary, Joseph and the Three Wise Men. 1Campaigners are planning to hijack today’s event and have started a petition to try to stop the use of the animals But this year, vegans and animal rights activists have got the hump — because the parade includes a live camel and donkey. Campaigners are planning to hijack today’s event and have started a petition to try to stop the use of the animals. They moaned: “Help to educate these morons as to why we don’t park camels and donkeys in the street to be harassed by children.” Organiser Anthony Thompson — lead minister of the True Life Baptist Church — hit back at the activists and vowed the procession will go ahead. He told The Sun: “I can’t understand why people are signing a petition about this. Views may be changing, but we won’t be getting rid of the camel or donkey....

Grisham's memoir will be published October 5 Former President Donald Trump apparently thinks a meat-free diet impairs a person's cognitive function, ex-White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham claims in an excerpt from her new tell-all book published Friday. He told her that switching to a vegan diet 'messes with your body chemistry' and feared it would make him lose 'brain cells.' An excerpt of the book adapted in Politico details Trump's relatively calm first weeks of 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic threw the world into disarray. A young boy had challenged Trump to go vegan in a series of ads across television channels and billboards in exchange for donating $1 million to US military veterans. 'I was communications director at the time and I playfully asked the president if he would ever consider doing that, since the challenge would raise a lot of money for a good cause,' Grisham writes.  She noted that 'he loved his steaks and cheeseburgers' but thought the 30-day window was doable. 'Trump’s response was swift, and his tone was suddenly very serious,' Grisham claims. He...
