Men and women queue outside a municipal office in order to have their racial origins examined. As well as personal documents, they clutch the results of DNA tests and fading family photographs. If they can prove to the authorities that they are descended from a 19th Century black slave, they will be eligible for millions of dollars of official compensation. While this may sound like something from a Black Lives Matter campaign wish-list video, such a scene could become a reality in California and other American states. For in one of the most controversial political initiatives in recent times, the first multi-million-dollar payments could, in the coming months, be distributed as part of a scheme which, in the words of one Left-leaning Californian legislator, would be compensation for 'decades of socio-economic disparity going all the way back to the days of slavery'. BEN STOKES wants to concentrate on England’s triumphs in 2022 — but also admits he has one eye on next summer’s home Ashes. REHAN AHMED is the sort of cricketer that Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum love. He bowls wrist-spin, bats aggressively, has confidence and talent and is young. So young, in fact, that he was born two years after Jimmy Anderson started his England career. 2Rehan Ahmed is England's youngest-ever Test cricketerCredit: Getty 2He was born after Jimmy Anderson made his debutCredit: Getty Ahmed will become England’s youngest-ever cricketer, aged just 18 years and 126 days, when chosen by Stokes for the Third Test against Pakistan, which starts tomorrow morning. His rise has been meteoric and he could be one of the final pieces in the Bazball jigsaw. For years, England have been searching for a mystery spinner, a man who can turn the ball both ways. They have the solid and reliable Jack Leach but Ahmed could potentially add an extra dimension to their attack. What’s more, Ahmed can bat – and he scored 122 off 113 balls for Leicestershire against Derbyshire in one of just six first-class innings before his Test debut. Ahmed even considers his batting better than his...
What is their gripe? Using the word "groomer" is a problem, Porter contended, because "the groomer narrative is an age-old lie" that "positions LGBTQ+ people as a threat to kids." "What is does is deny them access to public spaces, it stokes fear, and it can even stoke violence," Porter claimed. That explanation, however, does not explain how the semantic import of either word stokes hatred or fear like they claim. In this context, a "groomer" is someone who builds a relationship with children to later exploit them, often sexually, while a "pedophile" is someone who is sexually attracted to children. Sexualizing children is morally reprehensible, and sexually abusing children is, of course, illegal. The term "groomer," though, now often describes people who want to impress upon young children an ultra-progressive ideology of sex and gender, even if their parents disagree. Porter did not provide any evidence of violence incited by the usage of "groomer" or "pedophile." WARSAW — A massacre of civilians outside of Kyiv is just “the tip of the iceberg,” according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who cited the apparent Russian war crimes while demanding additional economic sanctions on Russia and arms for Ukraine. “Half-measures are not enough anymore,” Kuleba said after a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss at the United Kingdom’s embassy. “I have heard dozens of arguments why this or that sanction cannot be imposed against Russia. It's time to put all hesitation, reluctance, business-wise arguments aside and think about human sufferings and the need to stop the Russian war machine [before] it kills and destroys more on its way.” U.S. and European powers have imposed severe sanctions on Russia and provided billions of dollars' worth of weaponry to Ukraine, but that aid has been tempered by European dependence on Russian energy supplies and fear that certain military equipment would provoke a retaliatory response from Moscow. The withdrawal of Russian forces from around Kyiv this week permitted the discovery, just days before a NATO foreign ministerial, of mass graves...
IT’S no good getting the runs if you can’t get the wickets. Leach bowled too quickly, not giving the ball time to grip, as West Indies closed in on the follow-on target of 308 with just four wickets down at the close. The seamers bowled straight, with reverse swing, but rarely with anything approaching the menace required. Since late December, videos have flooded TikTok bringing awareness to Lauren’s story and advocating for the Bridgeport Police and the national news media to give her case more attention. This story was originally published at Prism. In late December, J. Wary about the accuracy of stories typically shared on the social media platform, Stokes searched to find a link to a Connecticut-based news site. It confirmed what had happened to Lauren Smith-Fields during her date with a man later identified as Matthew LaFountain, a 37-year-old design engineer. Through a combination of internet sleuthing and connections with local contacts in Bridgeport, Stokes pieced together a string of troubling and frustratingly familiar details. Despite LaFountain being present with Smith-Fields at the time of her death, the Bridgeport police department declined to investigate him as a suspect, saying he seemed like “a nice man.” Smith-Fields’ parents were informed of their daughter’s death...

Green Bay Packers rookie cornerback Eric Stokes’ initiation to NFL life is coming from a variety of directions. Off the field, he must buy snacks for Green Bay’s veteran defensive backs. On the field, Stokes frequently has to defend passes from MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to All-Pro receiver Davante Adams. Stokes is attacking all these assignments with the enthusiasm that helped make him a first-round selection. The Packers selected him out of Georgia with the 29th overall pick in the draft. “I’m pretty much living my dream,” Stokes said. “This is all I wanted, to be here. I always wanted to be in the NFL, so I can’t take a day for granted. Pretty much, when I wake up, I’m always smiling.” He’s maintaining that approach even while understandably taking plenty of lumps during his on-the-job training against Adams this summer. Trying to cover Adams when Rodgers is throwing him the ball is an assignment difficult for most veterans, let alone a rookie. Stokes isn’t shying away. “You can’t be scared to mess up,” Stokes said. The Packers are hoping...

Washington (CNN)As reports continue to rise of US diplomats and intelligence officials being sickened by the mysterious Havana Syndrome, inside the State Department frustration is rising among rank-and-file staffers and diplomats over what multiple officials say has been a tepid response by the department.Of particular concern is a lack of information from leadership, including what some say has been a hands-off approach from Secretary of State Tony Blinken who has yet to meet with any of the State Department victims despite saying he would prioritize the incidents.Fear of the mysterious illness is impacting diplomats' career decisions, sources say, with some foreign service officers deciding against taking jobs that they worry could make them targets of the unexplained phenomenon that has sickened hundreds of US officials over the past few years. Mental health has become a big issue at these Olympics and we should not be surprised.  The Olympics are the ultimate and this one had been five years in the making, the stakes are the highest and exposure is the greatest. Fault lines were bound to appear. My experience is that every case is different, every athlete is different. Things can change and unravel quickly in short periods of time. So, although people want definitive answers, guidelines and protocols, I can't offer you that. Nobody can. Gymnastics superstar Simone Biles has pulled out of several events due to mental ill-health Ben Stokes has decided to take 'an indefinite break from cricket' to look after his wellbeing I have some broad principles which I have used in my rugby coaching career and became clearer and reinforced as director of sport for the British Olympic Association at three Olympics.  The first and most important is to always appreciate you are dealing with flesh and bones, human beings, albeit amazing physical specimens with seemingly super powers. These don't make anybody immune...

Philadelphia homicide detectives serving on the force during the 1980s offered jailhouse informants sex and drugs in exchange for testimonies - true or false - in murder cases, according to an explosive new report. The Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday published a detailed account documenting a police practice known as 'sex for lies,' which one legal expert called a 'shock the conscience' due process violation. A dozen current and former inmates described in interviews and court records how detectives Ernest Gilbert and Larry Gerrard, who have since died, would allegedly bring them to the Police Administration Building, nicknamed the Roundhouse, and allow them to have sex with women in interview rooms in exchange for their cooperation in homicide cases that the pair were eager to close. The alleged quid-pro-quo arrangement between the informants and the cops has led to men serving life sentences for crimes they did not commit, according to some of the inmates who were interviewed for the article. A Philadelphia Inquirer expose claims homicide detectives in the 1980s offered inmates access to sex and drugs at the...
