In a letter Tuesday, parks and resorts Chairperson Josh D'Amaro told employees about a number of modifications to its reservation and ticketing system as well as its annual pass membership perks. "As we step into this bright future it is important that we continuously evolve to help deliver the best guest experience possible," D'Amaro wrote. "Many of you know that I'm in the parks fairly often and I listen to you and to our guests about the things that are working as well as the things that might need some change." These updates to park operations come less than two months after CEO Bob Iger returned to the helm of the company, promising a two-year stint that would spark renewed growth. The moves at the parks are said to be unrelated to...

Revenue is growing for Disney's parks, experiences and products division and the company is seeing steady increases in attendance, occupied room nights and cruise ship sailings. During its most recent earnings Disney touted that its new Genie+ and Lightning Lane products helped boost average per capita ticket revenue during the quarter. These new digital features were introduced to curate guest experience and allow parkgoers to bypass lines for major attractions. The company said it has been able to bring back in-park experiences such as character meet-and-greets, theatrical performances and nighttime events at Disneyland, which has allowed it to increase capacity at its parks, CEO Bob Chapek said at the time. Disney has placed caps on attendance since it reopened after the initial round of pandemic closures in early 2020 and...

Even though I’m a woman of childbearing age, I’ve been privileged enough to never have had to deal with the prospect of an unwanted pregnancy or the choice of whether to carry a pregnancy to term. But as news of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade spread across the country, I found myself returning to a movie I watched my freshman year of college. The film was “The Crime of Father Amaro” (or to use its Spanish-language title, “El Crimen del Padre Amaro”). It stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Ana Claudia Talancon and is based on the Portuguese story “O Crime do Padre Amaro” by José Maria de Eca de Queirós. Bernal plays Padre Amaro, a young priest who begins an illicit sexual relationship with the teenage Amelia, despite his vow of chastity. The relationship leads to a pregnancy, and Amelia ultimately dies after hemorrhaging during an illegal abortion. I saw the film in my Spanish 121 class, in which watching Spanish-language films was a regular part of the curriculum, and it has stayed with me. For years,...

Handout | Getty Images Entertainment | Getty Images LOS ANGELES – In April last year I took a stroll down an empty Main Street in Disneyland with the head of Walt Disney theme parks, Josh D'Amaro. The California park was a week from opening after more than a year of being shuttered due to Covid-19 restrictions, and cast members were hard at work putting the last touches in place before guests arrived.  It was a strange walk down the iconic cobblestone lane. It was quiet, a word that has probably never been used to describe a Disney theme park. There was no background music, no bustle of kids clamoring for a Mickey balloon or a soft pretzel, and no parade of colorful characters ready to pose for photos or sign autographs. As we followed the trolley tracks toward the statue of founder Walt Disney, D'Amaro spoke about the future of the company's parks in optimistic, but practical, terms. The road ahead, he noted, wasn't going to be smooth. Attendance caps, mask requirements and mandatory temperature checks were the cost of...
Disneyland, a rite of passage for many Southern Californians, celebrated its second proper grand opening a year ago this week on April 30. After a pandemic-induced closure of just over 13 months, a park that since 1955 has put forth the argument that there is a better, more triumphant version of reality unlocked its turnstiles to teary-eyed, COVID-weary fans. For Disneyland, what followed the reopening in a time of global uncertainty was great change inside and outside the parks. Just last week, as Disneyland brought back a number of evening shows — including the charming Main Street Electrical Parade, reimagined with a new finale that champions the we’re-all-in-this-together mantra of “It’s a Small World” — the company found itself thrown into the center of our country’s cultural wars. Disney’s public response — and initial lack of one — to anti-LGBTQ legislation in Florida led to debates within and without the company and now has blown up to see Florida’s Republican leadership take retaliatory moves to dismantle long-held operational privileges given to Walt Disney World. Inside the...

Kim Enders, 53, and Dave Enders, 52, along with their 26-year-old daughter, Samantha, were arrested on Saturday, April 9, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said. Also arrested was 52-year-old Jose Torres Amaro, he said. Police began investigating last month following a tip that heroin was being sold out of a house on the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue, the chief said. The youngest Enders and Torres-Amaro were charged with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, while Dave Enders had five fake identifications, Miller said. Jose Torres-Amaro and Samantha Enders were lodged in the Hudson County Jail on various drug-related charges. Torres-Amaro was also charged with money laundering. Kim Enders had a small amount of heroin and drug paraphernalia, and had an outstanding warrant out of Montville Township, according to the chief. Amaro said that the woman jumped out of her car and punched her about six times in the face before driving away. Police said they identified who the car belongs to but that the owner would not cooperate with the investigation. They are searching for the woman who appeared to be wearing medical scrubs at the time of the alleged assault. They said there was an older man in the passenger seat in the car. An Oregon man who went missing on his commute drove off a bridge because of faulty snow-plowing, his family alleges in a lawsuit. Antonio Amaro Lopez, 57, of Portland, was last heard from around 5 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2021, when he called his wife to say he was starting home from work. He never arrived. After other drivers reported they had seen an SUV plunging off a bridge over the Columbia River that evening, the vehicle was found by divers three days later — with Amaro Lopez’s body inside. The wrongful-death suit filed Monday by his wife and daughters cites a police report that said the SUV hit a patch of ice on the Glenn Jackson Bridge and skidded toward the right edge. There, hard-packed snow that a plow had pushed from the lane formed an icy ramp that sent the vehicle over the edge and into the river 144 feet below. The suit contends Oregon’s Department of Transportation was negligent in not clearing the snow. It listed as a contributing factor the bridge’s low outer barrier — 32...

As part of the changes, references to gender have been scrubbed from Disney’s employee dress code handbook, which provides rules on how cast members should show up to work. The guidelines also no longer specify the lengths of men’s hair and have lifted...
Mark Ashman/Disney via Getty Images Disney Parks is making some major changes to its longstanding dress code for employees in an effort to create a more inclusive environment. On Tuesday, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro wrote a blog post saying the company is taking action to make make its workers and guests feel even more welcome at its theme parks. D’Amaro explained that starting in 2019, the company solicited input from its cast members on how to “bring a greater focus to inclusivity and belonging.” One key takeaway was that employees should be able to present themselves in ways that better express their individuality. The most notable policy change to emerge comes in the form of how cast members can show up for work. “Our new approach provides greater flexibility with respect to forms of personal expression surrounding gender-inclusive hairstyles, jewelry, nail styles, and costume choices; and allowing appropriate visible tattoos,” wrote D’Amaro. “We’re updating them to not only remain relevant in today’s workplace, but also enable our cast members to better express their cultures and individuality at work.” For 65 years, Disney had...

As it looks to reopen Disneyland and California Adventure on April 30, the company shared a number of updates with media and shareholders during a webcast Thursday. To start, the parks will operate at around 15% capacity, and only be open to California residents. Mask-wearing and social distancing will be required for guests visiting the park. Disney has announced that it will lay off 28,000 employees in the United States across its Parks, Experiences, and Products unit as a result of coronavirus-related closures and limited-capacity operations. What are the details?Josh D'Amaro, chair of Disney Parks, made the announcement Wednesday in a memo to employees obtained by CNBC in which he said the company has been "forced to reduce the size of our team. "As you can imagine, a decision of this magnitude is not easy," D'Amaro wrote in the memo. "For the last several months, our management team has worked tirelessly to avoid having to separate anyone from the company. We've cut expenses, suspended capital projects, furloughed our cast members while still paying benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible, however, we simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while operating at such limited capacity." "As heartbreaking as it is to take this action, this is the only feasible option we have in light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the...

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure closed in mid-March and remain shuttered while they await guidelines for safely reopening...
