California utility company Southern California Edison has pledged over $5 billion to modernize the state's grid to meet future demand to power mandated electric vehicles. But those projects are far in the future, and critics of California's green energy initiatives ridiculed the state for mandating electric vehicles and then telling people they can't charge them. "Last week, California announced a ban on sale of gas-powered cars by 2035. This week, they're telling people not to charge their electric vehicles," tweeted John Cooper, a spokesman for the conservative Heritage Foundation. \u201cLast week, California announced a ban on sale of gas-powered cars by 2035. \n\nThis week, they're telling people not to charge their electric vehicles.\u201d — John Cooper (@John Cooper) 1661950013 "Good luck getting to work without charging all your EVs California. Newsom is pushing to keep the state's last remaining nuclear power plant open because it's the only reliable zero-carbon energy source. Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware urged the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt strict anti-pollution standards that would end sales of new, gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Carper, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, wrote to EPA Administrator Michael Regan late Thursday, imploring the agency to apply California’s fuel and efficiency standards and arguing that U.S. leadership on green technology will “encourage” businesses to invest in the United States rather than China, according to the Associated Press. The senator reportedly asked the agency to follow a deal reached between California and multiple automakers that would raise the average vehicle fuel efficiency of 50 miles per gallon by 2026. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state will ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. At the time of publication, Carper’s office had not responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for additional comment. His plan would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. "Pull away from the gas pumps," Newsom said in announcing his executive order to state regulators to draw up guidelines. "Let us no longer be victims of geopolitical dictators that manipulate global supply chains and global markets." White House spokesman Judd Deere said Newsoms order will hurt the economy and is "yet another example of how extreme the left has become. They want the government to dictate every aspect of every Americans life." SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will halt sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday, a move he says will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35% in the nation’s most populous state. The proposed rule would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state of nearly 40 million people. “Pull away from the gas pumps,” Newsom said. “Let us no longer be victims of geopolitical dictators that manipulate global supply chains and global markets.” California and the roughly dozen states that follow its lead on auto emissions standards make up a significant part of the U.S. auto market, giving the day’s move huge potential impact for the U.S. automobile industry as well as for long-term efforts against pollution and climate change, which is driven by fossil-fuel emissions. It also is likely to meet opposition from President Donald Trump, who wants to roll back tougher Obama-era auto emissions standards...

California will bar the sales of new gas-powered cars and trucks starting in 2035, Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, announced Wednesday. The move is a bold step for the largest U.S. auto market. California already has aggressive climate change goals and zero-emissions transportation goals, but this would be the first ban on internal combustion engines within the United States. More than a dozen countries, including the United Kingdom, have already made similar commitments to phase out sales of gas-powered cars. Transportation represents more than 50% of California’s greenhouse gas emissions, Newsom said in remarks Wednesday before signing the executive order. The governor added the state won’t be able to achieve its goal of a carbon-free economy by 2045 without accelerating actions to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. Newsom said move to bar internal combustion engines is an economic opportunity for California, which alone has 34 manufacturers of electric cars. SACRAMENTO (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state will halt sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035. On Wednesday he ordered state regulators to come up with requirements to meet that goal. California would be the first state with such a rule, though Germany and France are among countries that have a similar requirement. Newsom’s plan would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state. California already has rules mandating a certain percentage of new car sales be electric or zero-emission vehicles. © Copyright 2020 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.
