Eden Hazard appeared critical of Germany's gesture ahead of their match with Japan, in which the starting XI covered their mouths after being prevented from wearing the 'OneLove' armband to denounce the threat of FIFA sanctions.  The Real Madrid forward claimed that the four-time World Cup winners might have made a better impact had they focused more on winning the game than making a statement in the game, according to RMC Sport.  Players had been warned against wearing OneLove armbands promoting inclusivity at a tournament held in a country with a questionable human rights record, and Hazard admitted he did not want to risk incurring an automatic yellow card.  'Yes, but afterwards they lost the match,' Hazard said, when asked for his thoughts on the gesture made by the German side on Wednesday.  'They would have done better not to do it and to win. We are here to play football, I am not here to send a political message.  'People are better placed for that. We want to be focused on football.'  Several European nations, including England and Wales,...

Streets around stadiums and in Doha city centre were eerily quiet just hours before the world's greatest football festival gets underway. There was little sign of the usual fanfare of other World Cups when fans gather noisily in central locations or visit stadiums to take pictures. Sergio Garcia managed to find his way to the second day of a golf tournament this afternoon - arriving at LIV Golf's Chicago Invitational just a week after he snubbed the BMW PGA Championship in favor of a Texas college football game. ON the eve of the biggest match of her life, it was put to Leah Williamson that the last England captain to win a major trophy is commemorated with a statue outside Wembley Stadium. Arsenal defender Williamson is only 25, the same age as Moore was in 1966,  but she is an impressive leader and communicator. And while her prime focus is on defeating Germany — the dominant force in European women’s football for decades — she is strident and passionate in her belief the Lionesses have had a major impact on wider society at this breakthrough tournament. Williamson said: “I think what we’ve seen in the tournament already is that...
(CNN)England against Germany, a clash between two of the best national teams in the world, will be a fitting finale to what has been a record-breaking tournament at Euro 2022.After the two semifinal matches, a total of 487,683 fans have attended the games so far, more than doubling the previous record of 240,055, set at Euro 2017 in the Netherlands. That's without taking into consideration the historic attendance expected at Wembley Stadium for Sunday's final. LONDON (AP) — Since capping three decades coaching by lifting a second World Cup with the American women, Jill Ellis has taken time to reflect and embark on a different path, with new career challenges. “I’m not saying I would never go back to the sidelines,” Ellis said in an interview with The Associated Press. “But I feel a bigger purpose.” Advice given by the head of a university sports project— “be a voice, be visible, build a community” — led to Ellis taking on the role of president of a National Women’s Soccer League expansion team with the San Diego Wave debuting next year. It also saw Ellis accept a leadership role from FIFA to explore a transformation of the women’s game. The centerpiece of that project is the idea to double the frequency of World Cups — to play the finals of each event every two years. It was a vision first floated during the 2019 tournament in France as Ellis was winning her second title, with little immediate dissent. But resistance has grown, driven by concerns...
Oct. 27—FRANKLIN — The New England Revolution’s incredible season may throw the MIAA’s Super Bowl plans in disarray, Executive Director Bob Baldwin confirmed at Wednesday’s Board of Directors meeting. The initial football tournament format called for the eight MIAA Super Bowls to be held at Gillette Stadium on Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4. The Revolution, who have already locked up the top seed in the MLS Cup, could host the conference final on that Saturday. As the Boston Herald first reported hours before the meeting, playing Super Bowls on that Saturday was unlikely. Baldwin said the MIAA has been working with the Kraft family on an alternate plan to keep the games at Gillette and that the Krafts indicated they would make the stadium available for Super Bowls on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of that week. There is also concern that other important MIAA venues may be restricting access going forward due to COVID. Baldwin mentioned pools that have typically hosted MIAA championships may not allow fans, while the Reggie Lewis Center has notified the MIAA that it...
