In this article DISFollow your favorite stocksCREATE FREE ACCOUNTGeber86 | Getty ImagesThis year's Thanksgiving box office was both feast and famine for Walt Disney. While "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" added $64 million to its domestic tally during the five-day time frame, Disney's latest animated feature "Strange World" failed to lure in moviegoers, generating just $18.6 million between Wednesday and Sunday and a dismal $11.9 million for the traditional three-day opening. That is the worst three-day opening for a Disney animated feature since 2000's "The Emperor's New Groove," which brought in just under $10 million during its debut, according to data from Comscore. The dichotomous weekend comes as CEO Bob Iger returns to the helm of the company, promising to restructure Disney in a way that puts creativity at the forefront. Iger is expected to expand on these plans during a company town hall on Monday. The week of Thanksgiving is typically a robust time at the box office. In the last decade, not counting 2020 and 2021, the five-day Thanksgiving spread — consisting of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through Sunday...

London (CNN Business)Estimating just how catastrophic climate change will be for the global economy has historically proven challenging. But this summer, it's increasingly evident how quickly costs can pile up.Extreme heat and drought conditions are battering the United States, Europe and China, compounding problems for workers and businesses at a time when economic growth is already slowing sharply and adding to upward pressure on prices. In China's Sichuan province, all factories have been ordered shut for six days to conserve power. Ships carrying coal and chemicals are struggling to make their usual trips along Germany's Rhine river. And people living on America's West Coast have been asked to use less electricity as temperatures soar. These events "have the capacity to be quite significant for the particular regions that are affected," said Ben May, director of global macro research at Oxford Economics. The extent of the pain could depend on how long the heatwaves and lack of rain last. But in countries like Germany, experts warn there's little relief in sight, and companies are preparing for the worst.A barge passes exposed rocks...

THE STORY of Silicon Valley can't be told without PayPal bridging the gap from the 1990s to the 2000s. The PayPal saga is one of the most epic tales of a company inventing its own industry, parrying competitors and regulators, coming out on top, and turning dozens of people into technology legends. 6PayPal alumni have gone on to lead some of the most significant companies of the 21st century The "PayPal Mafia" is an elite group of engineers, investors, and visionaries who continue to shape Silicon Valley and the world today. The engineers who got their start at PayPal would go on to have illustrious careers as entrepreneurs, and several alumni of the PayPal Mafia are billionaires - all of them are, at least, multi-millionaires. PayPal was born out of the collision of two online payment companies: X.com and Confinity. Both offered free cash bonuses to try to steal the other's users and nearly spent each other into oblivion - they would eventually join forces in a bittersweet merger, with X.com and Confinity alum duking each other for...
German authorities said they have seized the world's largest superyacht in Hamburg after determining that it belongs to the sister of Uzbek-born Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov. The Federal Criminal Police Office said that, after 'extensive investigations' and despite 'offshore concealment', it had been able to determine that the owner is Gulbakhor Ismailova, Mr Usmanov's sister. The 512ft-long superyacht Dilbar is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta - two banking havens where the global ultra-rich often park their wealth. It was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than 648 million dollars (£493 million), and comes complete with an 80ft pool and two helipads, making it the largest superyacht ever build in terms of sheer tonnage. German police office said German authorities worked in Brussels to ensure that European Union sanctions applied to the owner. It says the yacht, which is being held at a shipyard in the port of Hamburg, can no longer be sold, rented or loaded.  The United States and the EU last month announced economic sanctions against Mr...
In this article MMATSK Telecom's "4D Metaverse" ride at Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.Ryan Browne | CNBCBARCELONA — Mobile World Congress made a big comeback this year — but the term on everyone's lips wasn't "smartphones" or "5G." Instead, it was the "metaverse," a vague concept used to describe vast digital worlds in which users can work, play games or even party. The term has been the talk of the tech world ever since Facebook changed its name to Meta, a rebrand largely aimed at drumming up hype for Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the virtual universe. And at MWC, the world's biggest trade show for the mobile phone industry, the word was repeatedly dropped into keynote speeches and splashed across exhibition stands. "The metaverse is the buzzword of the moment," CCS Insight Chief Analyst Ben Wood told CNBC at the show, stressing that it's still quite a nebulous term.Things got weirdBut if the metaverse is already a hazy concept, things seemed to get even less clear at MWC.SK Telecom's stand at Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.Ryan...

Metallica was hardly an overnight sensation. Formed in 1981, the band toiled for years in relative obscurity, going through the kinds of growing pains that most young bands endure: lineup changes, money woes, and tragedy, in the death of bassist and Castro Valley native Cliff Burton in a tour bus accident. But with the 1991 released the band’s eponymous fifth album (usually referenced as “The Black Album”), Metallica had reached superstar status. Mustard gas is infamous for its use on the battlefield but its key chemical – mustard nitrogen – formed the basis of the earliest forms of cancer-fighting chemotherapy, in the 1940s. Those first chemotherapy drugs, while crude, worked by the same principle that chemotherapy does today: as toxins that turn the body into a hostile environment, in which cancer can’t survive. Thanks to that advance and those that followed many once-fatal cancers are now almost completely curable. Last week, at the American Society for Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting, a further wave of exciting cancer discoveries were unveiled.  There was good news for patients with some of the hardest-to-treat cancers, thanks to immune-system-enhancing medicines that help the body fight cancer, and even hope of a ‘vaccine’ for ovarian cancer. What’s more, these drugs often have far fewer side effects than traditional treatments, such as chemo. Here, we outline a handful of the most remarkable discoveries, and explain exactly what it will mean for patients today. New York (CNN Business)Saudi Aramco had a rough 2020, just like every other oil company. But Aramco isn't any ordinary oil company -- it's the world's biggest, and the pandemic's toll on its business had a decidedly adverse effect on the Saudi-owned business. The company announced Sunday that its net profit fell a whopping 44.4% to $49 billion in 2020. Dealt that significant blow, Saudi Aramco committed to spend less this year than it had anticipated: Aramco said it planned to spend about $35 billion in 2021 on capital expenditures, down sharply from its previous estimate of $40 billion to $45 billion.Nonetheless, the oil company was upbeat about the future: It maintained its $75 billion dividend for the year and the company thinks it will return to pre-pandemic oil production levels by the end of 2021.The profit drop reflects the coronavirus pandemic's effect on global energy markets."As the enormous impact of Covid-19 was felt throughout the global economy, we intensified our strong emphasis on capital and operational efficiencies," Aramco president and CEO Amin Nasser said. Tesla is now more valuable than the world's top seven other car makers with a market capitalization of $615billion - but experts are warning its stock is too high and in bubble territory.  After a tumultuous past few years of production set backs and public scandals which even drove founder Elon Musk asking Apple CEO Tim Cook if he wanted to buy the company for a knock-down price, Tesla is now worth more than Ford, Honda, BMW, GM, Daimler, Volkswagen and Toyota combined.  The company was included in the S&P 500 on Monday at $665 a share which makes it the most valuable new entrant to the stock index ever. It had been valued even higher on Friday's close at $695 a share.   The sudden surge is prompting financial experts to warn that it may not last. Some say it is 'dramatically overvalued' and will plunge, along with the rest of the wider market, as fears grow over a new mutant strain of COVID-19 that has been found in the UK. It is also threatened by Apple's forthcoming electronic car program.  'While...
