Getty Jared Goff fires a pass for the Lions in a 2022 game. The Detroit Lions faced off against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3, and while the game was a close affair throughout, there was only one team who had major regrets about what played out. Detroit coughed up leads of 14-0 and 24-14 before losing 28-24. The implication there? They didn’t finish. This time around, that is going to have to be the focus for the Lions if they want to get the job done. Quarterback Jared Goff knows that, and said that the key to the last game was in the finish. Detroit didn’t get it done that time, but as the season has worn on, they’ve learned how to get it done. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, December 7, Goff discussed what he saw as the difference in the first game and it was simple. The team didn’t finish the job. Getty Amon-Ra St. Brown celebrates a 2022 score vs. Jacksonville. The Detroit Lions are getting an impressive season from Amon-Ra St. Brown, and the youngster is breaking out in a big way as the season pushes on for the team. St. Brown may not be getting a lot of love as a top player and might still be underrated, but to the Lions and those who are paying attention, his performance has been nothing short of impressive. During Week 13’s win, St. Brown erupted for a pair of touchdowns and 114 yards and as he explained to The 33rd Team, the plays were both designed to put him in a good position to succeed near the goal line. Getty Jared Goff takes a hit in the pocket in a 2022 game. The Detroit Lions took the Buffalo Bills down to the wire and nearly found a way to beat a great team, but ultimately, came up just short. From a young roster with holes to a team that is still learning their way, the reasons for that were numerous. At this point, though, a big reason that many are choosing to highlight is Jared Goff at quarterback. Goff has his ups and downs, and at times, struggles to make the big play in key moments to lead in a big win. That happened against Buffalo. With Detroit trying to drive for the win, Goff floated a pass on third and one out of the reach of DJ Chark, who couldn’t catch up to the pass. As ESPN’s Bill Barnwell pointed out, Goff made some bad misreads on the play, and it’s more than possible that if the throw itself had been better, the team may have scored on the play. Getty Jared Goff runs on the field for the Lions in a 2022 preseason game. The first preseason game isn’t typically a time for a starting quarterback to make a major impression, but Jared Goff bucked that trend in a big way. Initially, Goff wasn’t supposed to play at all for the Detroit Lions in their game against the Atlanta Falcons, but Goff surprised everybody by demanding back in. Once he found out he was slated to sit, it simply wasn’t going to happen. Speaking after Detroit’s 27-23 loss to the Falcons on Friday, August 12, Dan Campbell revealed that he was happy with Goff’s night, mostly because of the fact that he simply willed his way on the field when he was supposed to sit. Getty Jared Goff fires a pass in the direction of Amon-Ra St. Brown in 2021. The 2022 offseason is barely a week old, but already, the Detroit Lions are hard at work trying to craft their future and the grind does not stop for players no matter age or experience level. One of the standouts to develop late in 2021 was wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown. Near the end of the year, the lightbulb went off for St. Brown, who looked like one of the top rookie wideouts in his class. His development was due to the chemistry he developed with his quarterback, and now that is going to continue. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Getty Jared Goff throws a pass for the Lions against Green Bay in 2022. It’s been a year since the Detroit Lions moved on from Matthew Stafford, and early returns on the trade are not looking that great to some given recent events. The Los Angeles Rams just punched their ticket to the Super Bowl, beating the San Francisco 49ers 20-17, and while Stafford didn’t have a huge game statistically to lead in the win, that hasn’t stopped some in the national media from thumping their chest about him while also attempting to discredit former Los Angeles quarterback Jared Goff along the way. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions! Goff went the other way in the now-infamous trade, and while it has worked out so far to the Rams advantage, that was to be expected given the fact that the team had more to gain in the short-term with a “win now” roster. Getty Dan Campbell talks with Jared Goff before a 2021 game against the Rams. The Detroit Lions have a big decision to make this offseason with regards to the quarterback spot, and while many see Jared Goff as on the borderline, the team itself might not feel that way at all. Goff has played well for the last few weeks of the season prior to being forced to sit out Week 16 with COVID, and it’s clear that the Lions may have noticed this in a big way. As a result, his future could be coming into much better focus. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions! Getty Jared Goff on the sidelines during a 2021 Lions game vs. Arizona. The Detroit Lions have seen things come into focus a bit for 2022 by virtue of their strong finish to the 2021 season, and one player who seems to have cemented his present and future is quarterback Jared Goff. Goff has played well in leading the Lions to a couple of wins late in the season, and as a result, his future figures to be more secure in Detroit than it seemed before the middle of the season. Getty Jared Goff fires a pass against the Steelers in a 2021 game. Despite a hard-hitting battle in Week 10, the Detroit Lions emerged fairly healthy from their road battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While few of the ailments seem long-term or season-ending, the team is in a holding pattern as it relates to quarterback Jared Goff. Goff was dinged-up with an oblique injury, but played through the pain on the field in the rain. There’s a question of whether or not that will play out again in Week 11. Getty Jared Goff fires a pass for the Lions in 2021 against the Eagles. Jared Goff struggled through another rocky performance on the field in Week 10, and that has led many folks to wonder whether or not the team should look in a different direction at quarterback in the weeks ahead. In spite of that, however, there doesn’t figure to be a change on the horizon. Detroit Lions’ coach Dan Campbell spoke on Monday, November 15, and was asked about Goff’s status moving forward. The Los Angeles Rams are welcoming the Detroit Lions to town for their Week 7 game, and at least one Rams player is ready to get after his former teammate, Jared Goff.  Goff is returning to Los Angeles for the first time since the Rams traded him to Detroit for Matthew Stafford over the offseason. He was the Rams' quarterback for the better part of five seasons, so he'll be seeing a lot of familiar faces on the field.  Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is one of those players. He and Goff were teammates for five years, and Donald told the media that they've been exchanging texts leading up to Sunday's game, making jokes as friends do. But on the field, it's all business. He won't be taking it easy on Goff just because they played together.  Via the Los Angeles Times: “It ain’t going to be weird at all,” Donald said, chuckling. “I told him, ‘Get ready.’ I...
Getty Dan Campbell on the field for the Lions against the Bengals in 2021. The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams will play a football game on Sunday, but the scope of things will seem much bigger than that given what will play out otherwise. Getty Dan Campbell looks on during a Lions game in 2021. The Detroit Lions haven’t played well this season, and the frustration on the field has led to some commentary about how the team is performing in between the lines. Getty Dan Campbell yells at the Lions during a loss to Cincinnati in 2021. The Detroit Lions struggled in a multitude of ways against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6, but perhaps the worst way the team scuffled was on offense. Detroit only put up 228 yards on the day and 11 total points, and it’s becoming quite clear the team is trending in the wrong direction this season on that side of the ball. Getty Tyrell Williams runs over a Bills player after a catch in the preseason. The Detroit Lions have seen plenty of changes this offseason, and one of the spots most impacted by all the moves has been the team’s offense. Detroit has a new starting quarterback to break in, has a brand new trio of unproven wideouts and has a running game which figures to be good, but is also very young and unproven. Conventional wisdom would say that would add up to the experts being very unimpressed with the team’s weaponry. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Recently, NFL.com writer Nick Shook ranked all the triplets in the league in terms of quarterback, wideout and running back. The Lions weren’t dead last at all, and were far from it. Detroit placed 24th on Shook’s list, which was actually quite respectable all things considered. As Shook wrote, he doesn’t think there is a huge...

Getty Jared Goff smiles walking off the field after a Rams' 2017 win over the Texans. The Detroit Lions have shaken up the roster in some pretty dramatic ways leading into the 2021 season, so it’s easy to see how some folks will be concerned about how things are trending for the team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Jared Goff is the new guy in charge of the offense for the Detroit Lions, and he’s already found a comfort zone with his new teammates. “That’s always part of your job as the quarterback, especially for me with new faces, new system,” Goff said. “I’m trying to give them stuff that I like and that I know.” After five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Goff was traded, along with two first-round picks and a third-rounder, to Detroit for long-time Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. The trade reunited Goff with new Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who had a hand in drafting Goff in 2016 as the Rams’ director of college scouting. Since the trade became official in March, the Lions have asked Goff for his input on the team’s new offensive scheme, and they’ve come away impressed with how much he’s taken charge. “You can see how much more comfortable he is and how much more he has taken ownership of this offense,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. One strategy that...
Getty Jared Goff rolls out on a play against the Jets in 2020. The Detroit Lions added Jared Goff to the mix this offseason, and many weren’t sure about the move given how Goff has struggled in a massive way the last few years on the field. Even though that was the case, many see the opportunity for Goff to have a great season in 2021 and perhaps even a career revival in Detroit when he takes over on the field. Getty Michael Brockers pressures Jared Goff during Rams camp. The Detroit Lions added Michael Brockers to the mix for their defensive line, and when that happened, it was easy for some to mock the irony given some recent comments he made about Jared Goff. Brockers had celebrated the move of the Rams to trade for Matthew Stafford with a perceived dig at Goff calling Stafford a cut above his former teammate, but with salary cap realities as a result of that move, life quickly came at Brockers fast. Getty Jared Goff setting up the call for the Rams vs. Detroit. The Detroit Lions are switching quarterbacks for the first time since 2009, but the good news is, the move will come with a significant bit of grace attached. Matthew Stafford is heading to Los Angeles while Jared Goff will make his way east to Detroit. It’s going to be a sea change for both players considering their roots are on opposite sides of the country. Even such, the quarterbacks do have something in common and a way to connect in both cases, and Stafford isn’t hesitating to put that to use ahead of a major change for both men in 2021. While speaking with The Mitch Albom Show on WJR-760, Stafford confirmed that he’s been in contact with Goff thus far via text as he begins to transition to Detroit. Jared Goff clearly took a shot at Sean McVay after he was traded by the Los Angeles Rams to the Detroit Lions.  On Saturday, the monster news that the Lions had traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams came as a massive surprise. Getty Quarterback Carson Wentz of the Philadelphia Eagles. Carson Wentz was trending in Philly on Sunday following a blockbuster trade in the NFC. The assumption is the Eagles might look to deal their one-time Pro Bowl quarterback while using the parameters of the Lions-Rams trade as their guide. It’s not apples to apples, though. Los Angeles actively wanted to rid themselves of Jared Goff whereas Philly hired a new coach to fix Wentz. The Eagles owner and general manager have talked about how much they respect and admire him. Plus, there is the whole issue of getting a team to take on that $128 million contract (although some of it has been paid already, per NFL Network). The Rams caused a stir on Saturday night when they sent first-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023, a third-round pick in 2021, and Goff to the Lions for Matthew Stafford. It was an absurd price to pay for any player even one of Stafford’s caliber. The 12-year veteran has 45,109 career passing yards and 282 touchdowns. Naturally, the comparisons to...
Getty Jared Goff signals for a first down against the Patriots. The Detroit Lions have added Jared Goff in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, and most are acting as the 26 year-old was merely a throw-in for the Lions. That might not be the case whatsoever, though. It’s clear that even in spite of his troubles, Goff is still a very talented quarterback. The youngster has already been to a Super Bowl and has a 6-5 record in the postseason. Those victories are far and away better than anything a Lions quarterback has accomplished since arguably Bobby Layne. As a result, not everyone is so sure that Goff will end up a failure or out of Detroit Super Bowl winning head coach Tony Dungy sees a player in Goff that is still talented, which is why he thinks the Lions made the move to nab Goff when all is said and done. Jared Goff will start Saturday at quarterback for the Rams against the Packers. According to Adam Schefter, Sean McVay told the media Thursday that John Wolford is out after taking a shot against the Seahawks, and that means Goff is back under center as the starter. Jared Goff starts. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 14, 2021 Despite the fact that Goff didn’t start against the Seahawks after having thumb surgery, this is probably the best situation for the Rams. No offense to Wolford, but Los Angeles isn’t beating Aaron Rodgers and company with him under center. It’s just not going to happen.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Los Angeles Rams (@rams) Hell, there’s no guarantee the rams can beat the Packers with Goff out there, but the team’s chances are certainly higher. Jared Goff will start at quarterback for the Rams in their NFC divisional round playoff game against the Packers on Saturday. Goff has not started since the Rams’ Week 16 defeat to the Seahawks. He suffered a broken right thumb in the game and underwent surgery the next day. NFL PLAYOFFS: Divisional round picks against the spread John Wolford, who played in Week 17 and then again in the playoff opener against Seattle, took a blow to the head last weekend. Wolford was not able to return — which required Goff to step up, still nursing his thumb — and the 25-year-old has now been ruled out against the Packers, the team confirmed Thursday. That means a return for Goff, who completed just 9 of 19 passes from the bench last time out but threw for a touchdown and no interceptions in an upset win. More On: nfl playoffs Bills fans deserved this This is a nightmare for the Washington Football Team Bills’ first playoff win in 25 years was a thriller The case for the Washington Football Team Former Jet Jamal Adams is still delivering hard hits — and Los Angeles Rams quarterback John Wolford found that out the hard way. Wolford was knocked out of Saturday’s wild-card game at the Seattle Seahawks in the first quarter with a neck injury after taking a big hit by Adams on a quarterback scramble. The Rams announced Wolford was taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures. Wolford started the game in place of the injured Jared Goff — who was still recovering from Dec. 28 surgery on his right thumb, which he injured during the Rams’ loss to the Seahawks in Week 16. Goff, who was active for Saturday’s game, replaced Wolford. Adams was initially flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty as his shoulder pad collided with Wolford’s helmet. Officials picked up the flag, however, explaining Wolford was a runner and was not sliding...
With John Wolford out, the Los Angeles Rams turned to Jared Goff.  Jared Goff was supposed to be the franchise quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams entering the 2020 season. That status might be pending entering the 2021 offseason. Jared Goff will miss the Los Angeles Rams' regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals after undergoing surgery on his right thumb. Goff could return a week later if the Rams make the playoffs, coach Sean McVay said Monday night. John Wolford will take his first NFL snaps as Goff's replacement when the Rams (9-6) host the Cardinals on Sunday. Los Angeles will clinch a playoff spot with a victory, or if the Chicago Bears lose to Green Bay. "You watch him work, and the way he’s prepared, I know there’s confidence in him with his teammates. He’s put himself in a good position where he could come in and lead the offense." The Rams also will be without leading rusher Darrell Henderson, who is headed to injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. Rookie running back Cam Akers may be able to return from his own high ankle sprain after missing just one game, McVay said. Rookie Bryce Perkins will...
Los Angeles will be without one of their Hollywood stars come Sunday. The Rams are making their playoff push and they’re going to have to do it without Jared Goff, who underwent surgery to repair a a pretty gruesome thumb injury sustained on Sunday vs. the Seahawks. (Warning: Thumbs are not supposed to look like this.) Goff would pop the thumb back in place and finish out the game, going 24 for 43 for 234 yards and an interception in the 20-9 loss to Seattle. The Rams, who have been winning despite Goff’s down production this year, will have a steep hill to climb should Goff not be good to go come Week 17. John Wolford is second on the Rams depth chart, who has never thrown a pass in the NFL. The Cardinals could start a backup QB of their own, should Kyler Murray not be able to make it through the week while nursing a lower leg injury. Jared Goff is playing through what appears to be a nasty thumb injury against the Seahawks. Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams lost to the New York Jets in Week 15 and were dealing with a much tougher task Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately for Rams fans, Goff and the offense could not move the ball and ended up losing once again as their playoff hopes hang in the balance. One explanation for Goff struggling may be his thumb injury that looks both extremely gruesome and painful. See for yourself. But there was one troublesome play that stood out to me in the loss, which not only hearkened back to an interception I watched Rams quarterback Jared Goff throw in a loss to the Miami Dolphins about a month ago, but also made me think Goff — the Rams’ $100 million man — will see more of this wrinkle going forward. And in this week’s edition of the original Yahoo Sports web series “Check the Tape,” I’m here to talk about that wrinkle, in which the defensive linemen drop into short coverage to make plays on the ball.  In the video at the top of the...
Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams were brimming with confidence after their Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jared Goff and Co. started as favorites heading into their Week 12 fixture against an injury-ridden San Francisco 49ers team. However, there was a surprise in store for the Rams fans on Thanksgiving weekend. Backup quarterback Nick Mullens led the visitors to a convincing 23-20 win over their divisional rivals in what was a major upset on Sunday. Rams quarterback Jared Goff had a poor day at the office throwing for 198 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. BOSTON (CBS) — Monday was not a very good night for Tom Brady. Not only did he throw some terrible interceptions that cost the Buccaneers a chance to come back against the Rams, but Brady once again showed that he’s not a very gracious loser. After L.A.’s 27-24 win in Tampa Bay, Brady left Rams quarterback Jared Goff hanging at midfield. As Goff went out looking for a postgame handshake from his quarterback counterpart, Brady instead fled the field for the Bucs locker room. Brady’s most notable handshake snub came after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, when Brady walked off the field before shaking hands with Nick Foles. He snubbed Foles again earlier this season after the Bears beat the Bucs on Thursday Night Football in Week 5. Brady has said that...
Louisville protesters block in Trump Train ahead of rally Restaurant closings: IHOP may close up to 100 underperforming locations amid the pandemic Anatomy of a Play: How the Dolphins beat Jared Goff with Cover-0 pressure Coming into Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, per Sports Info Solutions, Rams quarterback Jared Goff had faced Cover-0 defenses — a high-blitz scheme with no deep safeties — on just three of his dropbacks. On those three dropbacks, Goff attempted two passes and completed one — to 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett in Week 6, on a red zone situation that obviously calls for no deep safety. © Provided by Touchdown Wire So, Cover-0 is not something Goff had seen a lot this season. But in 2019, he completed 7 of 16 passes for 71 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions against Cover-0. That said, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and defensive coordinator Josh Boyer decided to throw more of it right at Goff, and it turned out beautifully — in the Dolphins’ 28-17 win, Goff completed just 35 of 61 passes for 355 yards,...
