    Taco Bell is testing its own meat substitute made from soy and pea protein at restaurants in Birmingham, Alabama. The fast food chain plans to launch Beyond Meat later this year but is currently in the third trial of proprietary meat alternatives made by Yum Brands, their parent company. According to Taco Bell, the latest alternative is inspired by “classic Taco Bell flavors.” This isn’t the first time that Taco Bell has tried out plant-based alternatives. In the total market, the product of pork origin represents a staggering 99% and in 2020, sales of this traditional breakfast food totaled US $ 6,000 million until November, 20% more than in the same period of the previous year. During the 52-week period ending April 18, sales increased 25%, nearly double that of bacon based on animal meat, according to data from Spins, which reports data from natural and organic product retailers.     A new vegan sustainable film could replace single-use plastics in many consumer products, scientists say. The film, created at the University of Cambridge, is inspired by spider silk, one of the strongest materials known to nature.  It has the strength of human-made synthetic polymers in plastic bags and film wraps, but fully decomposes naturally, without harming the environment.   The new product will be commercialised by Xampla, a University of Cambridge spin-out company developing replacements for single-use plastic and microplastics.  Xampla will introduce a range of single-use sachets and capsules later this year, which can replace the plastic used in everyday products like dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent capsules – many of which still come in individual plastic wrappers.     Taco Bell is testing a vegan meat alternative for its menu.   The chain announced Wednesday it’s experimenting with its own proprietary protein made from a pea and chickpea blend. The new protein will be a substitute option for seasoned beef in any menu item at no extra charge during the test, a spokesperson for Taco Bell told Fox News. Taco Bell's new alternative meat taco, the Cravetarian, made with pea and chickpea protein, will be sold as a test run in the chain's Southern California location.     The plant-based meat market continues to expand. Air Meat is a new meat alternative from Berkeley, California that uses fermentation technology. Dr. Lisa Dyson is the founder and CEO of Air Meat and uses NASA-inspired technology to transform CO2 from the air to make an edible protein, Air Meat. According to Food Dive, the company raised $32 million in early 2021 to push the company forward. The Swiss company is jumping on the the plant-based alternative food trend. Nestlé promises the new candy still has the "perfect balance between crispy wafer and smooth chocolate." KitKat V ditches dairy milk, which is used for its regular KitKats, for a rice-based alternative in addition to its new sustainable cocoa, according to Bloomberg.
