A shot 21-year-old man pulled up to a Turkey Hill in central Pennsylvania in a BMW full of bullet holes with an infant in the backseat on Wednesday, Oct. 19, authorities say. A Turkey Hill clerk called 911 reporting that a BMW X2 hatch-back driven by a man had "pulled into the parking lot, exited the vehicle, and appeared to have sustained an injury consistent with a shooting" at 4:42 p.m., the Northern Lancaster County Regional police department stated in a report on Thursday morning. When authorities arrived at what they thought was "a shooting incident at Turkey Hill", located in the 5000 block of Main Street, in East Petersburg Borough they soon realized the shooting probably happened outside of the borough, according to the release. While EMS cared for the young Lancaster City man's non-life-threatening wound, the police examined the bullet-riddled vehicle. They found that it belonged to a third party, the driver’s side "had been struck numerous times from an obvious shooting incident" and they "also discovered that an infant child, found unharmed, had likely been an occupant...

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus will lodge a complaint with the United Nations over Turkey’s new financial assistance deal with breakaway Turkish Cypriots that demonstrates Ankara’s “complete control” over them, the president of the ethnically divided island nation said Monday. President Nicos Anastasiades, a Greek Cypriot, told state broadcaster CyBC that he would also include in the protest letter Turkey’s move to designate the Turkish Cypriots’ unrecognized, main airport as a domestic flight route, effectively turning it into a Turkish one. Many liberal Turkish Cypriots fear that both the financial deal and the airport designation are the clearest signals yet that Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to eventually annex breakaway northern Cyprus. “I will proceed with the complaint again with the United Nations relative to the airport which … in essence is being integrated and considered a Turkish airport,” Anastasiades said. “Secondly, (financial) protocol clearly demonstrates Ankara’s complete control of the Turkish Cypriots.” Turkish officials reportedly said the designation aims to make flights to and from northern Cyprus cheaper. Turkish Cypriots declared independence in the island nation’s northern...

People do shopping at The Egyptian Bazaar and around of Eminonu ahead of full lockdown from Thursday evening until May 17 to stem the spread of coronavirus in Istanbul, Turkey on April 29, 2021.Esra Bilgin | Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Turkey is buckling down for a three-week full lockdown beginning Thursday, as a third wave of coronavirus cases hits the country's health care system.  The country of 82 million had until this point managed to avoid a full lockdown, imposing a variety of partial restrictions that brought its average daily case count down to 6,000 by February. But a loosening of those restrictions in March unleashed a new wave of infections that have given Turkey the highest daily case rate in Europe, hitting more than 60,000 registered cases per day in late April.  The government is requiring all businesses to close unless granted an exception by the Interior Ministry, forbidding intercity travel without authorization, and moving all schooling online. Supermarkets can remain open except for Sundays. Turkey has so far reported more than 4.7 million cases of the virus...
ISTANBUL (AP) — As cases and deaths soar, Turkey’s president has instructed people to stay home for nearly three weeks and shut down many businesses as part of the country’s strictest COVID-19 measures yet. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not announce a stimulus package to offset the economic impact of the new restrictions, which opposition parties decried Tuesday. With Turkey’s double digit inflation, sinking national currency and businesses in trouble, many Turks already have been struggling financially. Gozde Aslan, a newspaper seller in Istanbul, said the lockdown would be difficult to weather. “We have to bring food to our homes, and we live in a period where everything is very expensive,” she said Tuesday. “May God help us.” Erdogan announced Monday that a “full lockdown” would begin Thursday and last until May 17. Residents will be required to stay home except for grocery shopping and other essential needs, while intercity travel only will be allowed with permission. Restaurants are allowed to deliver food. Some businesses and industries will be exempt from the shutdown, including factories, agriculture, health care and supply...

Gordon Ramsay stands by his full English breakfast. Gordon Ramsay/Twitter and FOX Image Collection via Getty Images Gordon Ramsay's English breakfast and thin gravy have come under fire from fans. Critics were saying the breakfast is too expensive and too small. To that, Ramsay told Insider, "if you're worried about the price, you can't f------ afford it." And as for the gravy, he said, "There's no delicious thick gravy anywhere. So for any muppet out there that says my gravy looks thin, that's because it's a proper gravy." Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay put a "Quintessentially British breakfast" on his menu at London's Savoy Grill, but fans were disappointed and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.  Many complained that it was missing components, was much smaller in portion size than a typical English breakfast, and cost too much money. But the "MasterChef" judge told Insider that he strongly disagrees with the "naysayers."  "I stand by it, I swear by it, and it is [the] one meal that I would ever eat...
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that Turkey sees itself as a part of Europe, but he called on the European Union to “keep your promises” on issues such as the country’s membership bid and refugees. He spoke before an EU summit due to be held next month. In recent weeks, EU members have raised the prospect of sanctions against Turkey over its gas exploration missions in the eastern Mediterranean. “We always see ourselves as part of Europe,” Erdogan said in a virtual speech to ruling party members. “We chose to favour Europe as long as they don’t force us to look elsewhere.” He added: “Keep your promises to our country, from full membership to the issue of refugees. Let’s establish a closer and more efficient co-operation together.” Turkey applied for membership in the bloc in 1987 and four years ago signed a deal with the EU to manage the flow of migrants to Europe. However, claims of democratic backsliding have seen its application effectively suspended while both sides have accused the other of not...

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey will start to report its total number of coronavirus cases later this week, the country's health minister said in an interview published Sunday, after Ankara was criticized for only releasing figures for patients showing symptoms of infection. Fahrettin Koca told the newspaper Hurriyet that asymptomatic cases would be included in Turkey’s published data from Oct. 15, which would be shared with the World Health Organization. Last month, the minister revealed Turkey had been publishing only the daily number of patients displaying symptoms of COVID-19. This led to criticism from medical groups and opposition parties that had long questioned the accuracy of the statistics. Turkey’s latest daily figures from Saturday showed 1,649 new patients and 56 deaths. It has reported more than 334,000 patients since the outbreak started, and 8,778 fatalities. Iranian president Hassan Rouhani pictured above  The UAE, which has never fought Israel and has quietly been improving ties for years, said the agreement put a hold on Israel's plans to unilaterally annex parts of the occupied West Bank, which the Palestinians view as the heartland of their future state. But the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the UAE had no authority to negotiate with Israel on behalf of the Palestinians or 'to make concessions on matters vital to Palestine.' Iran, in the ministry statement, called the normalizing of ties between the two countries a...

The Washington Post published a full-page ad calling for the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, a political foe of Turkey’s autocratic president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.  The ad is from the Turkish American National Steering Committee, a group with close ties to Erdogan. The group accuses Gulen of masterminding a failed coup attempt four years ago.  President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected Erdogan’s demands that he extradite Gulen, saying that Gulen would likely be executed if returned to Turkey. The Washington Post on Wednesday ran a full-page ad from a Turkish-American group with close links to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that called for the extradition of one of the autocrat’s political foes from the United States. The U.S. government has opposed extraditing Fethullah Gulen, with President Donald Trump reportedly telling Erdogan that Gulen would likely be executed if returned to Turkey. The ad, from the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC), runs on the fourth anniversary of a failed coup attempt in Turkey that killed 250 soldiers and civilians.
