Making new friends when you’re in your mid-60s tends to follow the same pattern. Proud grandmas share photos of their grandchildren, stories of babysitting dramas and details of soon-to-be new additions. So, at 64, I brace myself for the question I’m inevitably asked: ‘Teresa, do you have grandchildren yet?’ Pinning on my brightest smile I simply answer: ‘I’m afraid not. I would have loved a family but I just never met the right man.’  After years of being asked about my family status — first about children, now about grandchildren — you’d think I’d be used to it.  'My mother was 16 when I was born, my father just 14. More shocking still, they were brother and sister,' Teresa Weiler, 64, bravely shares her story RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 2 Next 'There's no end point': Emotional Kate Garraway breaks down... Queen Margrethe of Denmark defended the 'difficult' decision to strip her grandchildren of their titles today in a bombshell statement - as she insisted her family are her 'pride and joy.' A bitter royal row within the Danish Royal Household has unfolded in recent days after Margrethe, 82, announced on Wednesday that she would be removing princely titles from Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10. As of January 1 2023, they will become Counts and Countesses, and will be known as Their Excellencies, rather than His or Her Royal Highness.  Days ago, Prince Joachim admitted his relationship with his brother Crown Prince Frederik is 'complicated' - and that he hadn't heard from his mother Queen Margrethe II after she stripped his children of their royal titles. Tonight, she released a statement online, writing the decision was 'a long time coming' and it had been made as 'a Queen, mother and grandmother.' BUCHA, Ukraine (AP) — As he listened to his father die, the boy lay still on the asphalt. His elbow burned where a bullet had pierced him. His thumb stung from being grazed. Another killing was in progress on a lonely street in Bucha, the community on the outskirts of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, where bodies of civilians are still being discovered weeks after Russian soldiers withdrew. Many have been shot in the head. The 14–year-old Yura Nechyporenko was about to become one of them. Survivors have described soldiers firing guns near their feet or threatening them with grenades, only to be drawn away by a cooler-headed colleague. But there was no one around to restrain the Russian soldier that day in March when Yura and his father, 47-year-old Ruslan, were biking down a tree-lined street. They were on their way to visit vulnerable neighbors sheltering in basements and homes without electricity or running water. Their bikes were tied with white fabric, in a sign they traveled in peace. When the solider stepped from a dirt path to challenge them,...
The 38-year-old mom who shot her two school-aged sons while they slept last week is now facing first-degree murder charges following the boys' death Friday, with cops revealing she planned the killings for more than a week. Philadelphia police said Tuesday that Trinh Nguyen acted premeditatedly when she carried out the killings of sons JT, 13, and Nelson, 9, last Monday, revealing she penned a note a week prior describing what she wanted done with the kids' ashes.   'Please call 911!' one unsettling message, obtained by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, penned by Nguyen reads. 'My children are Dead in their bed.' Officials Monday also revealed Nguyen had left another signed, handwritten note inside the family home dated April 25 - seven days before the murder - stating what to do with her sons remains. The letter also instructed its recipient what to do with her own remains as well, confirming cops' previous suspicions that the mom had planned to take her own life once the deed was done. Nguyen then provided the address of the family home, in affluent Upper Makefield, where she...

He later smothered their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.   'I was still in my head. THE HOLIDAYS can be a difficult time for parents with little ones as they try to keep the magic of Santa alive while also keeping their budget in mind. Dear Amy: “Teacher in a Quandary” reached out regarding a rare collection of objects that were left behind by one of her students. Amy Dickinson  I graduated from high school in 1998. While I was learning about World War II in my 11th-grade U.S. history class, my grandfather, a veteran of that war, gave me several priceless items from his time serving our country. I chose to bring these items into school to share with my teacher and classmates, and, sadly, I failed to bring them home. For many years my family asked about those items, and I carried a lot of guilt with me for my lack of responsibility with such an important part of history and my grandfather’s story. A few years ago, the high school that I attended began a major renovation, which caused many teachers to move from classrooms that they had taught in for decades. One evening, I was waiting in a hallway outside my young daughter’s classroom, and my U.S. history teacher passed by. Related Articles Ask Amy: My children won’t attend...

Former Obama administration Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “All In” that Americans who have not received a coronavirus vaccine are like “secondhand smoke” in that they can make people sick. Sebelius said, “I think what President Biden has done is balance between what the science says and trying to cajole, encourage, make it easy for people to follow the science. When that turned out not to be as effective, then he turned to more hardened mandates. But what people don’t have a right to do is make other people sick, put other people in jeopardy, risk other people’s lives, risk children’s lives. So I think the president has been walking a line of balancing science and safety and security at every step along the way. Hoping that the mass majority of the American public would follow that lead.” She added, “It’s a lot like secondhand smoke. You have a right to be a smoker. The science is very clear what smoking will do to you, what cancer will be caused, what kinds of health conditions....

Dear Amy: My girlfriend (age 54) thinks it childish to introduce me as her boyfriend, and she doesn’t think I should introduce her as my girlfriend. Amy Dickinson  I’ve met all her family and most of her friends, and she has met mine. We take many trips together and stay at each other’s houses weekly. We are intertwined quite nicely and communicate beautifully. I totally disagree with her regarding this manner of address. It’s certainly not a deal breaker, even though it offends me. I’d respect and would like your opinion on this matter. Disappointed on the Cape Dear Disappointed: Your question is a little unclear about what the actual issue is. If your SO (significant other) doesn’t want to be referred to as your “girlfriend” because she doesn’t want for people to see that you are in a committed, exclusive relationship, then that’s a serious relationship question that you two should discuss. However, I can completely understand why a 54-year-old woman would not want to be referred to as a “girlfriend.” Far from being flirty and youthful, the term...

In the early morning hours of Dec. 4, 2020, the doctor called to tell me my wife Kim had hours to live.    Diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in January 2017, Kim endured a complicated Whipple surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her pancreas, 14 months of chemotherapy, a hernia operation, and two liver resections over the course of three years.     Kim told our children she would be their guardian angel, watching over them.  Her surgeon cautiously told us in October 2019 that he had cut the remaining cancer out of her liver and for a few months we anxiously clung to the hope that she had beaten cancer.   ALLEN WEST: NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER – WHY OUR NATION NEEDS IT NOW MORE THAN EVER But the cancer returned the following spring, this time blocking her bile duct. More grueling and painful treatment followed but without success.    This is one of my favorite photos of me with Kim. On that December morning when I thought we were going to lose Kim, I took our sons outside and had a tear-filled conversation. I told...
Dr Thomas Lee Flanigan (pictured) was known by many for his humor and his Facebook memes, so it wasn't surprising when his patients, friends and family members found out that he had written his own obituary in a way that only he could An Ohio surgeon penned an incredible obituary for himself before his death last week at the age of 48. Dr Thomas Lee Flanigan was known by many for his humor and his Facebook memes, so it wasn't surprising when his patients, friends and family members found out that he had written his own obituary in a way that only he could.  The married, father-of-three, who also served in the Army, died on April 27.  'Well, that's it. I have completed my shift as the great American cliché. In the spirit of what turned out to be my last New Year's letter, my wild and crazy life has again taken a new, unexpected turn with my shocking and unexpected, yet fabulous, exit,' Flanigan wrote in the obituary shared on Legacy.com.  Flanigan wrote that he has 'joined the...
Dear Quentin, I have dated my fiancée for just over three years. Within those three years, I have been severed from a job and spent two years unemployed looking for a new job. I have a new job, making roughly 75% of what I previously made, but it is a more than livable salary. My fiancée makes a modest salary in comparison to my own. Financially, I had spent a lot of years going without in order to pay for my son’s college education and to stockpile savings in order to retire early. According to my financial planner, I am well ahead of my goal to retire at 58 (I’m 51 currently) with an IRA of around $2 million, plus savings and other liquid assets. Currently, my fiancée is trying to get herself out of debt. She drives my old car and shares no utility bills or mortgage payments, but she does buy groceries, as the household is made up of her, her children and me. By supporting her family, I have very little I can do for...
The next Income and Assets campaign corresponding to the fiscal year 2020 begins on Wednesday, April 7 for the presentation of the draft online and ends on June 30, both inclusive. Those taxpayers who want to file the return by phone will have to wait until May 6, while face-to-face assistance at the Tax Agency offices will begin on June 2. In any case, a few days after the start of this campaign, many taxpayers wonder what are the taxation options in the declaration according to the personal and family situation. Joint taxation: when is it possible? One of the first questions is to know the current family situation, whether or not you are married and whether or not you have dependent descendants or ascendants. In this sense, one of the most interesting options is joint taxation of spouses with children. One of the advantages of joint taxation as a family unit is the reduction in the return. In this way, the amount will depend on the type of family unit, being 3,400 euros for those made...
A few nights ago, one of our boys woke up from a bad dream. A "bad man" had entered the house, he said. I assured him that he was safe, deeply loved, and that Jesus was more powerful than any force of darkness. I prayed that God would protect him and he eventually drifted off to sleep. I know many of you have had similar conversations with your own children. As parents, we strive to keep our children safe, to love and protect them, and to preserve their childhood. That’s what made the evening of January 4, 2021, so frightening. I was home alone with my then seven-week-old daughter. We were curled up on a basement couch shamelessly watching a Hallmark movie (my husband and boys were back home in Missouri) when the sound of angry voices drowned out the TV. I walked upstairs to see approximately 20 protestors standing in front of our house shouting through bullhorns. I stepped outside, baby in arms, and asked them to leave, saying we had a newborn and neighbors. They refused, and I...
Bridesmaids, pah! The irony is that India Hicks — one of the most famous bridesmaids of all — never thought she would be needing one. Why would she? As a thoroughly modern woman, she was determined not to get married, nor to bow to convention. As the granddaughter of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, India had been to her fair share of society weddings — and had a starring role at the grandest of them all. Aged 13, she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her godfather, Prince Charles to the then Lady Diana Spencer. What a heavy burden for a young girl (and we aren't referring to that famous 25ft train and incredible 153 yard veil). Her mother, Lady Pamela Hicks, had been a bridesmaid to the Queen, so India was part of a grand tradition. Last week, India, now 53, surprised everyone when she announced her own engagement to former advertising executive David Flint Wood — her partner of 25 years, father of her five children and, yes, the man whose proposal she turned down when they first...
Judge Amy Coney Barrett described some of the attacks against her, such as being called a “white colonist” for adopting two Haitian children, as “cruel” and “hurtful” not just to herself, but to her children. On Tuesday, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) brought up remarks made by a Boston University professor, who recently ranted on social media about “white colonizers” who “adopted Black children.” The professor says “that because you and your husband have two children of color that you’re a white colonist,” Kennedy said. “The implication is that you’re racist and that you use your two children as props.” Barrett responded: Senator Kennedy, it was the risk of people saying things like that which would be so hurtful to my family that when I told Senator Graham this morning that my husband and I really had to weigh the costs of this, it was saying deeply offensive and hurtful things — things that are not only hurtful to me but are hurtful to my children, who are my children, who we love and who we brought home and made part...
My children call her Mrs. Barrett. I call her Amy.  We carpool for sports and coordinate camps during the summer. We exchange insights about our kids and humorous anecdotes. We bring each other meals in life’s crucial moments -- a new baby, a sickness, a surgery, a death in the family. I first met Amy Coney Barrett 11 years ago when my husband and I, accompanied by our two small children, visited Notre Dame when he was being recruited to join the law school faculty. Amy was warm and welcoming, just weeks from the arrival of her fourth child. We talked easily and freely as if we had known each other forever. MAGGIE GARNETT: JUDGE AMY CONEY BARRETT HAS SHOWN ME HOW TO BOTH LIVE MY FAITH AND SERVE MY COUNTRY She was an engaged listener, which struck me because most people, including most important people, are often only interested in talking about themselves. Not Amy. She genuinely wanted to get to know me and learn about me. She was an experienced mother and accomplished professional but not...
California fires, coronavirus and an earthquake collided for a terrible week Which states have the fewest coronavirus restrictions? Dear Therapist: Should My Lover and I Confess to Our Affair? Editor’s Note: Every Monday, Lori Gottlieb answers questions from readers about their problems, big and small. Have a question? Email her at dear.therapist@theatlantic.com. © Bianca Bagnarelli Dear Therapist, I was married for 25 years, had three children, and went through a very messy, traumatic divorce 10 years ago. My ex had become an abusive alcoholic and was very mean, especially to our middle child, a girl with learning disabilities. In the decade after my divorce, I focused on working and raising my children, but I occasionally dated. It was a difficult decade, with no financial assistance from my ex, who lost his job after a series of DUIs. My children are now independent and my life is full with friends, books, and distance running, although I have often felt very lonely. A few years ago, a family friend I have known for 15 years began working out in the...
A COUPLE who have sex every day have revealed they are expecting their 16th child after initially struggling to conceive.  Patty Hernandez, from North Carolina, admitted she initially thought she wouldn’t be able to have kids with husband Carlos, after they struggled for two years to fall pregnant with their first child.  Patty and Carlos pictured with Charlie, who is now one Now the couple are expecting their 16th child next May, with Patty falling pregnant around three months after each new baby.  Speaking to the Mirror, Patty, 38, said: “We started with one and ended up with 16. We never imagined it would be that many. I had trouble getting pregnant with Carlos for almost two years... I guess my body wasn't ready yet.” Patty met Carlos at church when Patty was 25 and Carlos was 24, and “miracle” son Carlos Junior, now 12, was first to arrive in 2008.  The couple don’t use contraception and have given all their children names starting with C, in honour of dad Carlos, who supports the family as a floor cleaner.  Patty...
Growing up as a child in southeast Los Angeles, I don’t remember a single summer in which I wasn’t enrolled in the reading program at the Downey City Library. Multiple times a week, I would skip through the electronic doors holding my father's hand, the air conditioning coaxing us into the entryway where we were greeted by a display case featuring the latest children’s books. I would greedily pick a handful of the new releases before my dad walked me to the children’s section, handing me off to the young librarian who would watch me read as my father studied in his favorite carrel at the other end of the library. This ritual felt like home. On International Literacy Day I am thinking of my parents and what I owe to their complicated relationships to language and the written word. Children of adults with low literacy skills like my mom’s are 72% more likely to be at a low reading level in school. Poverty also plays a large role in whether children develop literacy skills during their early years,...
I never dreamed I would homeschool my kids. I did long for my children to enjoy learning and view the world with wonder. And my husband Clay and I wanted our children to join our travels for work and ministry. For those reasons, almost four decades ago, we launched our family’s homeschool experiment. Today our four grown children are thriving in their adult lives, and I believe that educating, inspiring, and mentoring them was some of the best work I have ever done. UPSTATE NEW YORK SCHOOL DISTRICT DELAYS START AFTER 90 STAFFERS TAKE CORONAVIRUS LEAVE This year, as COVID-19 is making many young parents “accidental homeschoolers,” I feel a mixture of compassion and excitement for them. Yes, this unusual school year may feel like a blur of snacks and math and tears and laughter and exhaustion. But it may also turn out to be a season of enormous growth, both as a family and as individuals. My adult children survived our homeschool experiment and today they are thriving. Our oldest, Sarah, earned a Master’s degree at Oxford University and...
DEAR HARRIETTE: My ex-husband was the product of an extramarital interracial relationship. Both of his parents — the ones who raised him — are white, and he has always denied he was biracial, despite the obvious physical characteristics that say otherwise. We have two beautiful teenage children who have been raised believing they are white. Harriette Cole  We recently took ancestry tests, and what I believed to be true has been confirmed: My children have 25% African DNA. Since our divorce 12 years ago, my children have been raised very open-minded, and for this reason, I don’t believe they will struggle with this new information, but I’m concerned about the questions they will ask, how much information to give them about their grandmother’s choices and how to deal with their father, who I know will be furious when he finds out. Please help! White Mom DEAR WHITE MOM: Your children should know their true identity. Start by sharing with them the results of the DNA test. Tell them what you know and that you suspected their father was biracial, though...
Dear Moneyist, My dad passed away from COVID-19 in April 2020. He was a first responder at a walk-in clinic, and was in great health with no underlying health conditions. His death is still a shock to me as he and I were very close. My sister, our stepmother of five years, her son and I are left behind. My father did not leave a will. It has been over two months, and we have now just received financial information regarding our dad’s estate. My stepmother hired a lawyer who wants us to sign papers to say she gets everything (our family’s money, plus his house and car) and my sister and I basically get nothing (just enough to cover one semester of college). She originally agreed to split everything evenly, and now she is denying any mention of that. She claims she wants all of this to be “fair” and the court system is “fair” when she knows none of this is respectable. She said if we don’t sign our rights over, she will put...
Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has finally opened up about the reason behind splitting from actor Brad Pitt, saying she separated for the well-being of her family. She opened up about the split during conversation with Vogue Global Network, reports mirror.co.uk. “I separated for the wellbeing of my family. It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing. Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds,” she said. Angelina Jolie: Fight for Human Rights and Equality Is Universal The 45-year-old actress was married to Pitt from 2014 for two years. The former couple, who were dubbed as Brangelina, divorced in 2016, but continue to share six children together. “In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people,” she said about her kids. Angelina Jolie Donates $200,000 to NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Says ‘Discrimination and Impunity Cannot Be Tolerated’ In the same interview, Jolie asserted that she ensures that the words “adoption” and “orphanage”...
