LIONEL MESSI is fit and ready to go for Argentina ahead of their crunch World Cup game against Mexico tomorrow. The star has been dealing with a reported ankle issue but should be fit enough to help his country keep their tournament alive. 1It was a miserable game for Lionel Messi against Saudi Arabia as he bids to lead his nation to victory in his last World CupCredit: Getty Argentina were on the receiving end of a shocking opening game defeat against Saudi Arabia earlier this week. Despite being among the favourites for the World Cup, the South American side lost control of the game and now face a high-stakes match against Mexico. Luckily for Argentina, Messi should be on the pitch as he looks to help his side claim three points. Another defeat would likely spell the end of Argentina's World Cup adventure. Getty Kerby Joseph celebrates with the Lions defense in 2022. Most of the 2022 season, the Detroit Lions have had a big issue with being able to put away games, and while the blame is shared by both sides of the ball, it’s clear the defense has played a major role in some of the letdowns. More often than not, the Lions have not gotten just a few plays in games, which has been to their detriment on the field. Finally, though, those fortunes seemed to turn for the better in Week 9. No matter whether or not Aaron Rodgers was having one of the worst games of his career, it can be true that the Lions were very impressive on the game flying around and making plays. A much-maligned defense forced three turnovers, held Green Bay at bay in the red zone and got off the field on a critical fourth down to allow the Lions to snag a win. As Field Yates pointed out, considering the Lions were one of the worst defenses in the league,...
The San Diego Padres' MLB playoff game against the Mets was temporarily suspended Sunday night as the umpires rubbed pitcher Joe Musgrove's ears after New York manager Buck Showalter called for a substance check. BEIJING (AP) — Rocks and ice, meet mobile devices and big data. The 500-year-old sport of curling is sliding into the digital age at the Winter Olympics, with modern technology helping teams sift through game stats and performance data to maximize their chances at a medal. Major pro sports like baseball and football have increasingly used data analytics to identify undervalued players and better inform coaching decisions. Now curling — a sport more often thought of as a pastoral pastime played by amateurs with dad bods and day jobs — is also turning to number-crunching. “Data is king,” said Nigel Holl, executive performance director of the British curling team, an early adopter of curling tech. “The only advantage we can possibly have is: Can we learn quicker and move faster than the opposition and get an advantage in?” Holl said. “And data is a key part of how you can move faster and be ahead of the game.” In curling, teams take turns sliding 42-pound rocks down a sheet of ice toward a scoring area. Players furiously sweep...
New York (CNN Business)Gaming is big business. And snack makers want in. Beverage brands have long been advertising directly to gamers. Red Bull has been active in the esports world for years, Monster Energy made waves when it appeared prominently in the game Death Stranding and PepsiCo has even developed a product, Mountain Dew Game Fuel, specifically for gamers. Food brands, however, haven't courted that demographic as aggressively. Snack makers are "definitely underrepresented," when it comes to advertising to gamers, said Caleb Bryant, associate director of food and drink at Mintel. PepsiCo has been advertising more of its brands, like Cap'n Crunch, in video games. But that's starting to change — snack brands are vying for a piece of the action. That means virtual billboards for Cap'n Crunch are popping up in several games, Lunchable logos are showing up in Roblox, and Heinz-sponsored rest areas can be found in Call of Duty. It's still early days, but the food makers think this strategy has big upside.Read MoreA marketing transformation Kraft Heinz (KHC), which owns Heinz condiments, Lunchables, Oscar Mayer...
TOKYO (AP) — Nintendo’s profit for the nine months through December slipped 2.5%, as shortages of computer chips hurt production, the Japanese video game maker behind the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises said Thursday. Kyoto-based Nintendo Co. recorded a 367 billion yen ($3.2 billion) profit for the period, down from 377 billion yen the previous year. Its sales in the same period fell 6% to 1.3 trillion yen ($11 billion). Game makers have reaped windfall profits from more people staying home during the pandemic. But sales of Nintendo Switch consoles had more momentum in the previous fiscal year, driven by its hit “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.” Console sales are often driven by hit games, although the devices tend to sell better early on and then slowly decline in popularity. Nintendo cut its forecast for Switch console sales for the fiscal year through March to 23 million machines. It had forecast 24 million units, previously slashed from an projection of 25.5 million units. President Shuntaro Furukawa has said the dearth of computer chips has hindered output, complicating planning...
Steve Kerr gathered the Warriors before a recent game with a message: Things are about to change. With Klay Thompson’s return on the horizon, already scarce minutes will be even harder to come by. He offered the players a pair of reminders — 1. Team success comes with individual sacrifices, and 2. Stay ready. That’s the coach’s problem, one of riches, and one for which Kerr has a built-in solution via his own guiding principles, picked up from Phil Jackson, the legendary coach whom Kerr played for in Chicago. Never let a player go stale, and instill the belief that his time can come at any moment. “I know I probably created some angst among our fans over the year by putting random guys in at crunch time,” Kerr said. “But I totally believe this.” With reports that Thompson could make his return Sunday, the roster crunch is about to get real. The Pittsburgh Steelers took a flyer on Mike Hilton five years ago, and the undersized cornerback repaid their faith by becoming one of the most versatile defensive backs in the NFL, a relentless 5-foot-9 tornado who maximized every last ounce of his talent. A talent that ultimately became too expensive to keep. It was the same with guard Matt Feiler and left tackle Alejandro Villanueva, who both walked in free agency for $7 million-a-year deals elsewhere for Los Angeles and Baltimore. While the Bengals, Chargers and Ravens spent money to address roster shortcomings, the Steelers were forced by the economics of the NFL to make unenviable choices to get under the cap. If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering the Warriors the past seven years, it’s that playoff basketball is an entirely different sport than regular-season hoops. Back in the salad days, the Warriors — chock full of what Draymond Green calls “16-game players”, a reference to the number of wins you need to claim a title — would wipe the floor with players and even whole teams who were not ready for prime-time. Success in the postseason requires tenacity, belief, a strong defense featuring relentless communication, and a deep understanding of one’s offensive identity. I believe the Warriors have all of that right now. But success in the postseason also requires a player who can rise up off the dribble and knock down a mid-range shot directly in the face of a fully engaged defender with four other defenders nearby. The Warriors haven’t shown that they have that guy. That said, he might — just might — be lurking on their roster. And no, I’m not talking about Stephen Curry. Related Articles ...

In 2019, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red — and, particularly, co-founder Marcin Iwiński — made the grand promise that its employees would not be forced to “crunch.” Crunch is a ubiquitous term in the video game industry, a stand-in word describing the weeks, months, or years when developers work for long, grueling hours to complete a game. Iwiński said at the time, in an interview with Kotaku, that he wanted the company to “be known for treating developers with respect.” But there’s a dichotomy between that historic public perception (albeit, now lost) and how workers at the company are treated. The Manchester City boss said: “All I can say is that the last month or two months have shown me that all the managers need time. “Already in the present and early in the future they’ll be contenders to fight for the title.   “They play better than the opponent in every game, as a manager you want the results you deserve, sometimes it doesn’t happen. “And in the...

Last year’s Super Bowl, 280 miles (451 km) down the road in Miami, brought that city $572 million in new spending, according to Miami's Super Bowl Host Committee. There have been NFL-affiliated events that have been canceled and non-NFL-affiliated events that have canceled," said Visit Tampa Bay CEO Santiago Corrada.     "We will see economic impact, the question is how much, based on all the things that are missing for us.” Since March, tourism industry sectors in Tampa have had to lay off 50%-75% of their staff and have begun to re-employ people only gradually,...
MANCHESTER UNITED were dealt a huge blow after Scott McTominay went off injured during the first-half of the crunch clash at Arsenal. The Scottish midfielder, 24, has been a mainstay in the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's midfield this season. 1McTominay left the field clutching his stomach in a huge blow to UnitedCredit: AFP But McTominay went off clutching his stomach just over half an hour into the massive game at the Emirates. The United midfielder was replaced by Anthony Martial, who had been dropped in favour of Edinson Cavani for the London showdown. Paul Pogba - who had started in a wide position - slipped back into McTominay's role with the game evenly poised at 0-0. Interestingly, Solskjaer opted for Martial instead of Donny van de Beek - a more like-for-like option. Van de Beek came off the bench during the 2-1 loss to Sheffield United. That game was his first appearance in the Premier League since the December 20 thumping of Leeds. MORE TO FOLLOW... Most read in FootballLive BlogArsenal 0 Man Utd 0 - LIVESolskjaer makes FIVE...

And Park reckons his finest hour was against Chelsea in May 2011 - a 2-1 victory which virtually sealed United's 18th top-flight title. He said: "I believe it was my best in a United shirt – I was everywhere. "I think it was after this game when fans started believing in what I gave the team. "My performance that afternoon, especially in the first half, was incredible.” In an interview with Four Four Two magazine, Park also reveals when then-United manager Sir Alex Ferguson spotted his talents. It was in 2005 when PSV beat eventual finalists AC Milan 3-1 in the Champions League - but were knocked out on away goals. FANCY A PUNT? TODAY’S...
EMMA HAYES has admitted Manchester United are serious title contenders this season ahead of their crunch clash on Sunday. The second-place Blues trail Casey Stoney's side by three points with a game in hand. 1Emma Hayes has admitted Manchester United are serious WSL title contenders this season The two title-chasers face off at Kingsmeadow on Sunday, and a win for the West Londoners would see them leapfrog United on goal difference. Chelsea won the league last term after the campaign was axed on a points-per-game basis amid the coronavirus crisis. But Hayes has admitted United are fierce competitors for the WSL crown this term under England legend Casey Stoney. She wrote in her column for the BBC: "Players are often so used to only having male coaches, so we should celebrate the fact we have so many female leaders in the WSL. "That includes Manchester United manager Casey Stoney. "Casey is a fantastic leader who has taken that team from one division to the next with a great group of players. "She is getting...

Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most highly anticipated video games of the past decade, has already been delayed three times. Employees at CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind the game, have reportedly been required to work long hours, including six-day weeks, for more than a year. The practice is called “crunch” in the video game industry, and it is sadly all too common. It’s also something that the leadership at CD Projekt Red said wasn’t going to happen to the people making Cyberpunk 2077. Video game developers rarely speak openly with the press about their labor practices, but that’s just what CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński did in May 2019. In a conversation with Kotaku, he said that his company thought of itself as more humane than its competitors. While long hours would be permitted for those interested in working them, crunch would not be made “mandatory.” He called it a “non-obligatory crunch policy” and said it was something to be proud of. “We are known for treating gamers with respect,” Iwiński told Kotaku last year. “And I...
PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG has told his Arsenal team-mates to make sure their crunch North London derby against Spurs is a 'turning point' in an underwhelming season. The Gabon striker wrote in Arsenal's matchday programme: "I can’t wait for the derby on Sunday. "I think this is the game that we have to make into a turning point for us this season. "There’s nothing better than this game to give you that opportunity to turn things around. "We have to understand that if we can win this game then everyone will change their mindset. "A big result in the derby can really lift the players, the fans – everyone. "We know it will be a tough game, they are playing well at the moment to...
CD Projekt Red’s long-awaited open-world role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077, set in the near-future dystopian Night City and featuring Keanu Reeves, was first announced to be in development in 2012. Eight years later, the game will finally be released. The game is based on the Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing series authored by Mike Pondsmith, who also served as a consultant on Cyberpunk 2077. It’s been the object of great anticipation from fans, particularly those who loved CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a 2015 fantasy role-playing game that received widespread critical acclaim. But as the hype has mounted for Cyberpunk 2077, so too has skepticism and concern about the game and its development. CD Projekt Red has faced criticism for some of the marketing decisions surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, such as the usage of a hyper-sexualized trans model in a promotional poster. The company has also faced serious scrutiny of its work practices, particularly with regard to “crunch,” a common games industry practice that refers to long hours of overtime lasting weeks or months. In May 2019, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin...

Next generation gaming is here with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – other than that there are no next generation games in them. Souls of monsters The first title, which can truly be called the next gen, it shows – although it is a remake of a PS3 game… It also shows. Original Souls of monsters Incredibly influential game. Its continuation, Dark souls, Was very popular and was slightly improved at first, but is now well established which has made the big series better. “Like souls” is now a genre in practice, although the originals are still surprisingly good nonpareil. Some of the comparisons played Souls of monsters Glad to hear it was redesigned, and also by Bluepoint (who also remade the legends) The shadow of the giant figure), But worries that the game will not stand up to modern standards. Can an old game really, really, really pay for the essentials that are a decade behind its offspring? Absurd Beautiful paint and still a blockbuster acting as the next gen intro? Well, it’s kind of – there’s...
