In past years, Baseball America’s release of its top 10 Orioles prospects has been a time to look ahead to the players Baltimore might someday promote in hopes of improving its major league roster. This year’s edition, which was released Tuesday, doubles in giving a look at which players the Orioles might have to part with to do the same. In all likelihood, executive vice president and general Mike Elias will have to include at least one of the players in the back half of the list to make legitimate improvements to the team’s lineup or rotation. For the first time since 2018, the preseason list is topped by someone other than Adley Rutschman, but the system’s depth remains on display. Here are three takeaways from Baseball America’s list of the Orioles’ top 10 prospects. Remade infield The 2019 preseason list — the first with Elias leading Baltimore’s baseball operations department — included one infielder in the top 10: Ryan Mountcastle, caught at third base amid his fall down the defensive spectrum. Six of the latest top 10 are infielders,...

One day, Richie Nelson was enjoying summer with his wife and young boys.  The next, he was being airlifted to a hospital where he'd undergo emergency brain surgery, to remove the tumor that had been causing confusion and a massive headache for weeks. The 39-year-old dad from Norwood has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer that has turned his life upside-down. Much of the future is unknown for Nelson and his family, which is why his wife, Jenny Bertolini, says these days, they're focused on the here and now. "We don't know what tomorrow brings," said Bertolini, trying her best not to become emotional on a phone call with Daily Voice. "We're sharing our story to show that this came out of the blue for us, and we want to show others the importance of cherishing every moment." More than $72,000 had been raised on a GoFundMe for Nelson's family as of Saturday, Nov. 26. Instant reaction to Pac-12 developments on the field … 1. A fitting conclusion The final conference game of the year provided the perfect ending to a riveting three months. Washington outlasted WSU for a 51-33 victory in the highest-scoring Apple Cup in history, a result that knocked Oregon out of the Pac-12 race, sent Utah to Las Vegas and positioned the Huskies for the Rose Bowl. We’ll address the details momentarily. But let’s first acknowledge the most entertaining Pac-12 regular season in years — one loaded with high-level offense, terrific quarterback play, a slew of pulsating games and (for once) national relevance. The best of the bunch this week unfolded in Corvallis, where Oregon State rallied from 21 points down in the third quarter to shock Oregon 38-34. (More on that momentarily, as well.) With only championship week remaining, the conference is on the brink of its first College Football Playoff berth since 2016. It should have six entries in the CFP rankings next week (again), and it’s guaranteed to have six teams with at least nine victories for the...
David Shaw, the winningest coach in Stanford history and a two-time Rose Bowl winner, announced following the season finale that he is stepping down from his position, effective immediately. Shaw was 96-54 in 12 seasons in charge of his alma mater. “After many prayers and multiple discussions with my wife, one phrase keeps coming to me – it’s time,” Shaw said in a statement released by the school. “There are not sufficient words to describe the love and gratitude I feel for my family, all of my former and current players, my staff, this administration and the entire Stanford family. Thank you all.” Shaw took over for Jim Harbaugh in 2011 and won three conference titles in his first five seasons and was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year four times. But the program has regressed dramatically in recent years, posting 3-9 records in each of the past two seasons. Athletic director Bernard Muir will begin a search for Shaw’s successor. “I would like to thank David for his immense contributions to Stanford,” Muir said. “David has represented Stanford football,...

A man was shot and killed behind a New Milford apartment complex Saturday night and investigators were searching for his killer. The 20-something victim, believed to be from out of town, was shot in the head in the rear of the Bookchester Apartments in the 900 block of Boulevard shortly after 7 p.m. Nov. 26, authorities said. Controversial Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz has slammed her own newspaper's reporting on China and its opposition of Covid lockdowns in the country. On Saturday, the Post tweeted an article about China's record number of coronavirus cases, noting how only a tiny proportion its billion-strong population are vaccinated. 'A coronavirus outbreak on the verge of being China's biggest of the pandemic has exposed a critical flaw in Beijing's 'zero covid' strategy: a vast population without natural immunity,' the post said. Within hours of the tweet, Lorenz, an 'internet culture' columnist for the paper, re-tweeted the report with her own view on the matter, tearing apart the reporting. 'There is no lasting 'natural immunity' to COVID. You can get covid over and over and over again bc there are so many endlessly evolving strains and antibodies wane. Also, choosing not to kill off millions of vulnerable people (as the US is doing) isn't a 'critical flaw',' Lorenz wrote Twitter users were appalled Lorenz would seemingly defend the authoritarian country's lockdowns and implied human rights violations - with one user accusing her...

The Yellow Jackets took an early lead in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate and Georgia fans had to be talked off the ledge with the Dawgs trailing.  Considering that the No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs came into their Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate matchup against rival Georgia Tech as 36-point favorites, the rightful expectation was that the Dawgs were going to pour it on the Yellow Jackets and show no mercy. The start to the game, however, told a much different story. The Jackets got the ball to start the game and marched down the field on an impressive 11-play, 75-yard drive to score and take a 7-0 lead. That was fine if UGA was going to respond but, out of the gate, they failed to do so. The Bulldogs punted on their first drive after a three-and-out and then had to settle for a field goal after forcing a punt on the next drive, causing them to still trail 7-3. That was enough for some fans to get ready to pack it in for the rest of the season, even with Georgia well on...
Getty Xavi wants Endrick at Barcelona. Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has confirmed the Catalan giants are interested in Brazilian wonderkid Endrick and have spoken to the 16-year-old about a future move to the Camp Nou. Endrick is one of the hottest young talents on the planet currently and has reportedly attracted interest from a host of top European clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. Xavi told ESPN that he has already chatted with the youngster and explained the team he is trying to build at Barcelona after taking charge of the club in November 2021. “We have been speaking with his father and also directly with the player. I explained the project we have in Barcelona. We want talent and he is a talent, capable of making a difference,” he said. “He has the goal, he has the dribble, he has a brutal ability to make the difference. He is a player from the present, who is already playing in the Brazilian league, and also for the future.” The Barcelona boss says the decision on...
BRENTWOOD – In a championship rematch between teams featuring highly-touted quarterbacks and offenses that averaged over 34 points a game, it was Pittsburg’s defense that delayed coach Victor Galli’s retirement by at least another game. The Pirates won their second consecutive NCS Division I championship over Clayton Valley Charter, this time by a score of 13-3. “I’m just soaking it in, no matter what happens,” said Galli, who announced a few weeks that this playoff run will be his last as head coach. “Anything else that happens is the cherry on top.” Spearheaded by Odera Okaka and a defense that seemed to know what would happen before the offense snapped the ball, Pittsburg held Clayton Valley to under 200 yards of total offense. Christian Aguilar, who a year ago quarterbacked Pittsburg to a title win against the Ugly Eagles, was under consistent duress. “We did execute some good plays, but we just needed to stay consistent and we didn’t,” Aguilar said. “And they were really fast on defense.” Pittsburg wasn’t much better, scraping together 290 yards from scrimmage and only...
Getty Brandon Aiyuk throwing a ball to celebrate a touchdown for the San Francisco 49ers. Since being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, Brandon Aiyuk has quietly become one of the most underrated young stars in the league.  The 25th overall pick out of Arizona State, Aiyuk racked up 60 catches for 748 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie, 56 catches for 826 yards and five touchdowns in 2021, and has already amassed 46 catches for 587 yards and six touchdowns in 2022 though just 10 games. And yet, Aiyuk is still getting used to being a star in the NFL, as he detailed to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “I think just as the season goes along you start to get more and more comfortable, but I’m just trying to continue to get better,” Aiyuk said. “That’s the thing. I still feel as if throughout the games we’ve played I’ve left a lot of plays out there, so that’s my main thing is just trying to capitalize on...
Despite weaker than expected inflation for October American households are still feeling the pinch with household spending clocked at $433 more a month to buy the same goods and services it did a year ago. While figures are slightly down from the $445 monthly figure in September, Moody's Analytics analysis of October inflation data shows that inflation is still stretching the average budget. Consumer prices jumped by 7.7 percent in October from a year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That rate is down from 9.1 percent in June, which marked the most recent peak, and data has suggested inflation may cool further in the coming months. Wages for many workers haven't kept pace with inflation, meaning they've lost purchasing power. Hourly earnings fell 2.8 percent, on average, in the year to October after accounting for inflation, according to the BLS. SANTA CLARA — To Jimmy Garoppolo, a patient man in an impatient environment, it was simply a matter of time. When Garoppolo was vilified for stepping out of the back of the end zone for a safety and the 49ers were 1-for-10 on third down in an 11-10 loss to Denver in Week 3, there was a collective groan that stretched throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Two months later, Garoppolo is the toast of the town — a quarterback in search of a Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl who looks good enough to accomplish both. It’s a far cry from throwing on a side field after shoulder surgery and being a non-participant until determining the best course of action was to return as the backup to Trey Lance. “I know a lot people don’t want to hear this, but I didn’t go to training camp with these guys,” Garoppolo said Friday. “I know I played a lot of football with them, but not from the timing aspect. Going back to Denver, we were going through training camp that...

The 30-year-old has seen his name mentioned in these talks for several years and has already been traded four times in his career. His hefty contract and reduced role make him a candidate that the Sixers would ideally move for a better fit. However, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, this does not look likely to be the case. The NBA Insider reported, “I have not heard his name come up at all and I have been calling around the league all week.” This occurred during an episode of his podcast, ‘Please Don’t Aggregate This’ where he spoke with PhillyVoice’s Kyle Neubeck. The Sixers insider mostly agreed with Fischer and stated, “I...

Getty Jon Jones Former UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones and top-ranked heavyweight Curtis Blaydes have been linked to a potential collision inside the Octagon, but the latter would rather fight for the undisputed belt than competed against “Bones.” MMA Junkie’s Nolan King reported on November 21 that insiders had filled him in about the UFC’s plan for Jones’ comeback. According to the report, the promotion would like Jones and heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou to fight at UFC 285 on March 5 in Las Vegas. However, because Ngannou is still recovering from knee surgery and renegotiating his contract with the UFC, the promotion is looking at Blaydes as a “safety net” should “The Predator” not make it to the Octagon, King reported. After King shared the news, many in the MMA community theorized that if Jones vs. Blaydes comes to fruition, there will be an interim belt on the line. When speaking with Fanatics View’s James Lynch, Blaydes expressed his interest in fighting Bones. But if he could choose between an interim title fight with Jones or fighting...

Getty Jamaal Williams celebrates a first down for the Lions in 2022. The Detroit Lions came within an eyelash of beating a fantastic Buffalo Bills team on Thanksgiving, and while the loss might have stung, fans still woke up with plenty of reasons to feel thankful. One of the biggest reasons is having a team that could be in the playoff hunt the rest of the way. While the Lions loss to the Bills is temporarily crippling to put them at 4-7, the team could battle back hard to remain in the hunt. After the game, Bleacher Report took a look at some takeaways about the teams, and writer Brad Gagnon was more than a bit bullish on the Lions. As he said, the moral victories may be getting old, but the Lions still looked playoff-caliber against Buffalo. “Meanwhile, the Lions might lead the NFL in moral victories. And while that may not satisfy an even more starved fanbase than the one in Buffalo, it’s worth noting that Detroit looked like a playoff-caliber team Thursday against a high-quality...
Alleged Colorado Springs LGBTQ shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich and his mother have been caught on camera threatening fellow Frontier Airlines passengers after spouting racial slurs.  The video, first reported by KDVR, was recorded by a woman named Maria Martinez after landing at Denver International Airport in July. Martinez's voice can be heard when the video begins as she follows Aldrich and mother, Laura Voepel. Aldrich, 22, is suspected of murdering five people and injuring others at Club Q on Saturday. It has emerged that Aldrich went through a name change and now identifies as non-binary, using they/them pronouns. Just before midnight, Aldrich is thought to have opened fire in the popular LGBTQ Colorado Springs nightclub. He was eventually subdued by US Army veteran Richard M. Fierro as well as patron Thomas Jane and a drag performer. The club's owners say Aldrich arrived with 'tremendous firepower' - an AR-15 rifle, six magazines of ammo and a handgun. Patrons used the handgun Aldrich was carrying to beat them to the ground until police arrived. In the latest video, Martinez says: 'What makes a...

CRANBERRY sauce is an important component of the yearly Thanksgiving dinner - but the labels are leaving people baffled. Eagle-eyed shoppers have realized the Ocean Spray labels on jellied cranberry sauce are flipped. 1The labels on Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce are upside down for an important reasonCredit: Ocean Spray It means the rounded edge that’ll usually find on the bottom of most canned goods is on top of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce cans. According to Ocean Spray, this is actually intentional and to keep the jelly intact, a spokesperson told CNN. In fact, it creates an air bubble on the rounded side (the top) so customers can "swipe the edge of the can with a knife to break the vacuum and the log will easily slide out". The process isn't new either and has been in use since the early 2000s.
