PERHAPS the most remarkable thing about footballer Jake Daniels announcing last week that he is gay – the first current male professional in Britain to do so – is quite how unremarkable it turned out to be. Well, I mean yes, sure, Boris Johnson championed the 17-year-old Blackpool striker, tweeting: “Thank you for your bravery Jake. It would have taken huge courage to come out and you will be an inspiration to many, both on and off the pitch.” 6Jake Daniels has been praised as brave... it shouldn't be the caseCredit: 6PM Boris Johnson showed his support for Jake But the sky did not cave in. And the world continued to spin on its axis. Still, it was a landmark moment for both the game and the LGBTQ+ community when Jake chose to make his statement. He wrote in an article. “Now is the right time to do it. I feel like I am ready to tell people my story. I want people to know the real me . . . it’s been a long time that I have been living with the lie.”...
DENVER (CBS) – After the third driest April on record, Denver and the Front Range need a wet May and so far mother nature is delivering. Because of rouge rain over the airport on April 29th, the month just missed being declared the driest April in Denver’s history. Total precipitation was only 0.06″ last month or about 4% of the normal 1.68″. (source: CBS) In just the first 48 hours of May, Denver officially received 0.88″ of moisture or about 41% of the liquid precipitation the city typically receives during the entire month of May. (source: CBS) The third day of the month on Tuesday will be much direr overall but there will still be rain and snow showers in the mountains mainly west of Vail Pass during the day. Denver and the Front Range has just a 20-30% chance for rain showers late in the day. The “best” chance sill be north of the metro area including around Boulder, Longmont, Loveland, and Fort Collins. (source: CBS) By Wednesday morning, there is a good chance for snow in the mountains...
The uncertainty surrounding his baseball future lingered in David Robertson’s mind. Right elbow soreness derailed Robertson’s 2019 season just seven appearances into a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. He tried to rehab the injury but ultimately required Tommy John surgery in August 2019 to repair his ulnar collateral ligament. Looking back, Robertson says he should have listened to doctors and stopped trying to push through the injury in an effort to avoid surgery. “I went into Philly with really high hopes,” Robertson told the Tribune. “It was a great opportunity, a great spot to be in and when I got there, my body just let me down. “And it was a tough road. There was always that fear it was the end.” Robertson, who turned 37 last month, endured a winding road to get back to the big leagues, where he again is an elite high-leverage reliever. He has been essentially unhittable in the first month of his Chicago Cubs career. Robertson hasn’t allowed a run through 10 innings this season while giving up just one hit in nine...
OJ Simpson said he understood where Will Smith was coming from when he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars, saying he felt the same way when 'every comedian in the country had an OJ routine.'  Simpson, 74, took to Twitter on Tuesday to put his two cents in about the Will Smith/Chris Rock debacle at the Oscars on Sunday night. Smith, 53, slapped Rock, 57, after the comedian made a GI Jane joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith's haircut.  The Juice said he felt sympathetic toward Smith, but still said the actor was wrong to hurt the comedian over a 'semi un-funny joke.'  'Hey, look, it was unfortunate,' he said in a video posted to Twitter. 'I think Will was wrong.  'Look, I understood the feeling. In my life, I've been through a lot of crap when I was raising two young kids and every comedian in the country had an OJ routine, and don't think I wouldn't want to [b**ch] slap a couple of them, but you got to accept that it's human.'   Smith stunned Rock with an open-handed slap...
MARK WOOD asked if his "arm has been cut off" in his hilarious anaesthetic-inspired ramblings after coming out of surgery. Australian footballer Josh Cavallo, who revealed his homosexuality last October, was the target of homosexual abuse during a local championship match on Saturday. He promised on social media that he would continue to fight. A few weeks after he came out, for the first time for a footballer still in action, Josh Cavallo sees the sad side of the coin in his bold gesture, namely the proliferation of homosexual comments against him. On Saturday, with his club Adelaide during a championship match at the Melbourne Victory Ground, the Australians again came off the stand with multiple insults. When the meeting ended, the left-back broke a message on his social networks after the match, expressing his disappointment, but also his willingness to fight. “Hate never wins,” Cavallo promises “I’m not going to pretend I didn’t see or hear of homosexual abuse in the game last night,” he wrote. “I have no words to describe how frustrated I am. As a community, it shows that we still exist. I do not apologize, and I’m been out of football recently (…) for all...
CHELSEA appear to be suffering a hangover after their spectacular win over Juventus less than two weeks ago. The praise they received after thrashing the Italian giants 4-0 means nothing if they fail to build on it with repeat results. 2Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel watches on as West Ham winCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun Chelsea are struggling to relive the heights they hit on that night just 12 days ago, with unconvincing performances and points dropped. A draw with Manchester United and a narrow 2-1 win over Watford have highlighted a few defensive flaws that were non-existent in their masterclass against Juventus. And the lack of killer instinct that undermined their Premier League performances last season has reared its head again. Most concerning for Thomas Tuchel's Blues is that mistakes are now costing points. At Stamford Bridge it was Jorginho's woeful touch that put Jadon Sancho through on goal to put United in the lead, against the run of play. And at West Ham, again the Italian was at fault with a needless and weak back pass, which Edouard...

A Lib Dem peer and former Facebook vice president has today claimed the social media firm's name change to Meta has been a 'long time coming' and is not related to the company's whistleblower scandal. Lord Richard Allen, who worked with the US tech giant for 10 years, says the firm's announcement is about addressing 'confusion' between Facebook the company and Facebook the product. Currently the overarching company behind Facebook is called Facebook Inc and operates the social media site, along with sister app Instagram, messaging service WhatsApp and virtual reality firm Oculus. But founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg last night announced Facebook Inc would be renamed Meta from December 1. The name change comes as Facebook continues to face a barrage of criticism following claims by former employee turned whistleblower Frances Haugen. Ms Haugen leaked internal documents and made bombshell claims that it 'puts profits over people' by knowingly harming teenagers with its content and stoking anger among users. But Lord Allen, a former MP who joined Facebook in 2009 and worked for the company until 2019 as the company's vice...

Civil rights leaders have spoken out about how they tired of Mark Zuckerberg 'talking down' to them, leading them to persuade firms to stop advertising with Facebook.  'You can't reason with the guy,' Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP, one of the groups in the coalition behind the boycott, told Politico this week.  '[Facebook] is a breeding ground for racial hate groups.'  More than 800 brands including Coca-Cola, Starbucks and now Lego have so far pulled advertising from the social media giant, following the 'Stop Hate for Profit' campaign launched by a number of civil rights groups last month.  The groups enlisted the help of the multinational corporations to pressure Facebook into implementing new policies to help block hate speech in the wake of the death of George Floyd's 'murder' and amid a national reckoning over racism.  It is estimated the boycott will only put a dent in the company's fortune, with Bloomberg predicting it will cost Facebook just $250 million of its $77 billion annual sales.  However, with 98 percent of its revenue coming from ads and the company's share price already plummeting in...

The rise in poverty many economists projected as a result of the coronavirus pandemic has been largely avoided, capped by the relief bills passed in March, two new studies posit. But the one time payment of $1,200 per person was just one time, and the extra assistance in unemployment benefits, as well as their extension to contract and gig workers, ends at the end of July with no apparent intention on the part of Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate to extend it. But, says Zachary Parolin, with Columbia University's team forecasting this year's poverty rate, "Right now, the safety net is doing what it’s supposed to do for most families—helping them secure a minimally decent life. […] Given the magnitude of the employment loss, this is really remarkable." Prior to the crisis, they forecast poverty...

If it weren’t for a pandemic-caused postponement, the French Open would have been in Week 2 now, and Rafael Nadal might still have been in contention for a 20th Grand Slam title. Instead, he’s home in Spain, practicing lightly — and wondering along with everyone else in tennis whether the next Grand Slam tournament, the U.S. Open, will be held. And if it is, would he play? “If you (ask) me today, today I will say, ‘No,’” Nadal said with a shake of his head during a video conference call with The Associated Press and other wire services Thursday. “In a couple of months? I don’t know. Hopefully, ‘Yes,’” he continued. “But we need to wait probably until we have more clear information about how the virus evolves and how the situation is going to be in New York in a couple of months. Because, of course, New York has been one of the places that have been very strongly hit by the virus. So let’s see.” Nadal thinks there are two key requirements for the U.S. Open to happen...
