SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned his party this week to change tactics in confronting the Biden Administration and its agenda as he argued, “Republicans must learn to quit underestimating President Joe Biden.” In a post on his personal website, Gingrich wrote, “The clarity of winning and losing creates a clarity of analysis about who is doing well and who isn’t.” “If you apply that simple model to Biden, you realize how well he is doing by his own definition of success,” Gingrich added, offering some rare praise for the president. “Like most Americans, I do not approve of the job he is doing. Like virtually all conservatives and Republicans, I deeply oppose his policies. They are clearly weakening America and strengthening our enemies. And, again, like most Americans, I oppose the woke policies which are undermining and threatening to destroy popular, unique, shared American culture,” added Gingrich in the blog from Wednesday, throwing in the regular bards as well. The former speaker added the right-wing “hostility to the Biden administration on our terms...
Slugger Aaron Judge is the hottest commodity on the market this offseason, and history suggests the New York Yankees may not keep him around. The New York Yankees are reportedly wasting no time as they try to keep slugger Aaron Judge around another season, offering him around $300 million for eight years. While that is one of the biggest offers, other teams, particularly the San Francisco Giants, are expected to drive a hard bargain for the star. However, MLB history doesn’t bode well for free agents staying with their team. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, “The last time the highest-paid free agent remained with his current team was Yoenis Cespedes with the Mets in 2016. And before that, it was Matt Holliday in 2009.” While the Yankees certainly do have the money to pay Judge and it’s possible they’ll keep him around, it doesn’t seem promising as an extensive list of free agents have switched teams. For notable players such as Corey Seager, George Springer, Gerrit Cole, Bryce Harper, Eric Hosmer, David Price, Max Scherzer, Robinson Cano, Zack Greinke,...

By using LED lights, it’s estimated the cost will be around £600 by Christmas Day - around £20 for the four hours they light up their home between 5pm and 9pm until then.  Steve, 32, who lives at home with his wife Sheena, 28, and daughters Ellie, 12, and Brooklyn’s two, believes it’s well worth all of the hard work to make it happen. He says: “We will have around 40 thousands bulbs in total and we are 90 percent LED so the display is really efficient overall.  “We have...
Lavender is a very popular plant for herb gardens as well as general landscaping. It has nice, lacy foliage and attractive purple blooms in the summer, and of course, it smells delightful. Because it is Mediterranean, it is also drought-tolerant and can take both hot summer days (to USDA Zone 9) and chilly winter nights (to USDA Zone 5). Lavender generally can grow to three feet tall and easily spread out just as wide. It likes full sun, and though it will tolerate many conditions, it does best in well-draining, somewhat dry soil. It is a short-lived perennial plant, though it can struggle to survive severe weather conditions, particularly cold and/or wet conditions. Pruning it annually, when new growth appears, will help to keep it healthy. There are many varieties of lavender, with French, English, and fringe being three of the most popular. These are easy to find at nurseries or online, and with one plant, it’s possible to replicate and multiply lavender via softwood cuttings in the spring or hardwood cuttings in the fall. For those in really...
Getty The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are under pressure. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers losing ways continue but head coach Todd Bowles emphasized that no coaching changes are on the horizon. There may not be changes coming but Bowles had some strong words for his coaching staff, indicating there will be adjustments. Despite the offensive struggles, Bowles shot down the idea that the team could take away play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. “I would not consider changing coaching, but we need to change some of the things we’re doing,” Bowles explained during his October 23, 2022 postgame press conference following the team’s 21-3 loss to the Panthers. “We definitely need to change some of the things we’re doing, and we’ve been discussing that. It can’t happen overnight, but we got to do a lot better than what we’ve been doing as a whole.” Bowles: ‘We’re Not Coaching It Well All the Way Around’Given the talent that returned to the Bucs, there is plenty of pressure on Bowles to turn things around, especially in what could be Tom...
Over the summer, the art world was rocked after a “painting” created by an AI won a state fair art competition. While image generators have been around for decades now, they’ve mostly been treated as a novelty—a funny quirk of the internet for people to have fun and mess around with. But the AI art winning the competition crossed a kind of heretofore unseen Rubicon. When it did, it made something very clear to the world at large: the AI art wars have begun. Between bots like Midjourney and DALL-E—not to mention Google’s Imagen—developers and engineers are ramping up their efforts to create the best and most sophisticated text-to-image generators. Now Meta (Facebook’s parent company) has thrown its hat in the ring—but instead of a text-to-image bot that transforms a text prompt into a picture, they’ve created one that can turn your words into videos. The company announced in a blog post last week that it had developed a text-to-video generator dubbed Make-A-Video. The AI-driven system seems to be Meta’s answer to DALL-E and Imagen—only instead of simply making a...
Lowering your sleep age by reducing the amount of disruptions, improving quality of rest and getting an adequate amount each night can help ward of diseases like Parkinson's and extend a person's life by reducing their 'sleep age', a new study finds. A joint research team from Stanford University, in California, and the Danish Center for Sleep Medicine in Rigshospitalet, Denmark, found a clear correlation between the estimated sleep age of a person and their life-span. They used polysomnography tests (PSGs), which gauge multiple biometrics to determine sleep-quality and diagnose potential sleep issues in people, to find a person's sleep age. Elderly people generally suffer more disturbances, and a decrease in quality of sleep can be an early sign that a person will develop a cognitive impairment like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or dementia in the future. A clear correlation between poor sleep and an increased all-cause mortality rate was found. A ten year change is sleep age can extend or reduce a person's life by around 8.7 years, even. Experts believe that a person can help limit sleep disturbances each night, and as a...

As Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said at a table in Camden Yards’ auxiliary clubhouse with a first overall pick beside him, he couldn’t help but reflect on the previous time he had done so. Three years ago, the Orioles introduced Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman as effectively the face of their nascent rebuilding project. When they welcomed Oklahoma high school shortstop Jackson Holliday to Baltimore on Wednesday after officially signing him to an $8.19 million contract, a record for a high school draft pick, they added a player who they hope will add to their foundation, not begin it. “It felt like we were just kind of starting something, and [Rutschman] was a big piece of a big project we were trying to build,” Elias said. “And I look now, and this has a totally different feeling to me adding Jackson’s talent right now. Our organization, I think, is in the healthiest spot it’s been in in a very long time. We’ve got a major league team, to their credit, that’s up here playing a...
Trey Mancini wanted to relax. Honestly, he did. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde could tell the first baseman was pressing at the plate, so he gave Baltimore’s longest-tenured player the night off Monday to unwind and take in a 5-1 win against the Tampa Bay Rays from the dugout, enjoying a view at Camden Yards that Mancini might not have for much longer as trade speculation swirls. “Me being classic me,” Mancini said, “by the third inning I’m going to the [batting] cage.” With this being the final series at Camden Yards ahead of Tuesday’s Major League Baseball trade deadline, Mancini is bracing for the possibility that this will be his final time inside the dugout along the first base side of Camden Yards. He wants to treat it as if this is his final week, in a way, because he doesn’t want to waste this time in front of the home crowd that has cheered him on since 2016 by racking his brain for a way out of a slump that, entering Wednesday, has him hitless in his last 25...
(CNN)President Joe Biden is one of the latest Americans to be diagnosed with Covid-19. According to the White House report, his seems to be a mild case -- the sort we have come to expect in a vaccinated and boosted person, even a 79-year-old. Kent SepkowitzHis illness in this time of vaccines and new treatments provides a sharp contrast to the situation former President Donald Trump faced when, in early October 2020, just a month before the presidential election, he, too, was diagnosed with the disease. His condition is thought by many experts to have been much more worrisome than his staff let on at the time, a posture abetted by Trump's stiff upper lip and insistence he was "doing very well." Leaving to others a consideration of the two men's comparatively different governing styles as well as their levels of apparent faith in scientific facts, their illnesses, just 21 months apart, provide an excellent opportunity to compare the available medical options as well as the frustrations presented by a new disease in its first months to a much...

As the weather warms up, I am officially transitioning myself from wearing sweatpants every day that I’m not in the office over to shorts. This annual change in my life also comes with the realization that not all men’s athletic shorts are created equal. This is especially true when it comes to overall performance as well as comfort. The best men’s athletic shorts should not only be comfortable, but they should also fit well and be made of sturdy, sweat-wicking materials that stand up well to wear and tear while keeping you dry during sweaty workouts. The proper pair of athletic shorts need to be able to handle extreme moisture, heavy friction, and being stretched in a number of different positions. Furthermore, much like joggers and athletic pants, style is also an important component to consider. So, if you plan on wearing these out as part of an outfit, the athletic shorts must also look good with the rest of your ensemble. With so many different brands on the table, here are some of the best men’s athletic shorts...
(CNN)An old-fashioned courtroom miniseries with a somewhat more modern backdrop of sexual politics, "Anatomy of a Scandal" is a crisply told, nicely binge-able mystery that doesn't overstay its welcome. Adapted from a novel, the material certainly doesn't break any ground but proves watchable enough for its various twists, some admittedly more strained than others. While it's a famous man who's on trial (hence the "scandal" part), the six-episode project is defined by two women: The lawyer prosecuting the case, and the wife who wants to stand by her husband but is given reason to doubt him.Infused with a very British flavor despite the involvement of writer/producers David E. Kelley (raising echoes of "Big Little Lies") and Melissa James Gibson ("House of Cards"), the Netflix project focuses on Parliament minister James Whitehouse ("Homeland's" Rupert Friend), whose political and personal status are threatened when he's charged with raping an aide ("Aladdin's" Naomi Scott), a scenario complicated by the fact that the two had been having an affair. The allegation and related revelations come as an understandable shock to Whitehouse's wife Sophie (Sienna Miller), who...
EVERYONE'S favourite smell isn't cookie dough or freshly baked bread – but vanilla. That's the finding from a global study that uncovered the most universally-loved scent. 1Consider baking vanilla cupcakes as a safe choice for guestsCredit: Unsplash Scientists nosed their way around the world to find out if our favourite smells are cultural – or simply innate. And they sniffed out the answer: we're born with it. "We wanted to examine if people around the world have the same smell perception and like the same types of odour," said Artin Ashamian, a neuroscientist at Sweden's Karolinska Institute. "Or whether this is something that is culturally learned. "Traditionally it has been seen as cultural, but we can show that culture has very little to do with it." It turns out that people tend to like or dislike the same smells – regardless of their cultural backgrounds. Researchers asked participants to sniff 10 unique scents, and then rank them based on how nice they were. Sniffing scents were 235 individuals from 10 different communities. A SLEEP expert has revealed how your period may be impacting your sleep. The female body goes through a number of changes over a menstrual cycle, including a rollercoaster of hormones. 1Your period can leave you tossing and turning in bed, experts sayCredit: Alamy And this is just one of the reasons why you find it harder to get good quality sleep at certain times of the month.  “The two key hormones during the menstrual cycle are oestrogen and progesterone, which come from the growing egg cell in the ovary,” said Dr Gareth Nye, a lecturer at Chester Medical School who specialises in maternal and foetal health.  Oestrogen and progesterone go up and down in a cyclical fashion every month. They rise during the first half of the cycle to help prepare the uterus for a fertilised egg, and drop in the second half to cause the uterus lining to break down (i.e. your period). MESA, Ariz. PART of a big family? Then you'll know that trying to organise any kind of get together can quickly get very political. Getty Jerry Jacobs makes a tackle while playing the Bengals in 2021. The Detroit Lions were encouraged by the play of cornerback Jerry Jacobs during the 2021 season, and the stats as well as the weekly grind show a player who is coming on in a big way. Jacobs did plenty of things well in his first season in the league after cracking the Detroit roster, and perhaps the only disappointment came when the rookie was injured late in the season and shelved for the rest of the year with an ACL injury. That ended one of the more positive rookie seasons the team has seen in a while. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions! An intricate sword, buckle and arrows are among a treasure trove of goods discovered in a Viking burial in Orkney, dating back around 1,200 years. The Mayback Viking burial in Papa Westray was first discovered back in 2015, but analysis of the precious items is now well underway. One of the most exciting items is a sword, which is believed to be a Pederson Type D sword – one of the heaviest Viking weapons. Andrew Morrison, from AOC Archaeology, said: 'Given very few Viking Age scabbards have survived, the Mayback example is a very important addition. 'We know of at least 30 of these blades throughout the Viking world. Approximately half have been found in Norway, with others discovered as far west as Dublin, and as far east as Slovakia, Poland, and Russia. 'However, the only other Type D sword is from the Isle of Eigg. That one was excavated in the 1830s.' The sword was found in 2015 during excavations of a cemetery at Mayback, Papa Westray, but has only now been identified as one of the heaviest designs...

"I think it’s important to keep in mind that while your suspicion is justified given your area’s demographic makeup, it is possible that this is just how things shook out, so you should give him the benefit of the doubt, at least initially," the response cautioned. BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots picked up a massively important and pretty convincing win over the L.A. Chargers on Sunday. It was exactly the kind of victory the team needed, and now has New England back to .500 on the season. But on Sunday, after a so-so day on the field, he knew that he was more of a passenger in the Week 8 victory. “I definitely didn’t have my best day, at all,” Jones told reporters after New England’s 27-24 win. “Everyone around me had a great day, and that is what football is all about. I have to find ways to improve in being consistent and making the throws I know...

In the end, the Jaguars came out on top. The Jaguars won 23-20 on a last-second field goal, snapping their 20-game losing streak, which had been the second-longest in NFL history. It was not a well-played or well-coached game, but it was the Dolphins who made the big mistakes in the end. Brian Flores made several questionable decisions and wasted two timeouts with two bad challenges late in the game, and Tua Tagovailoa threw one of the ugliest interceptions you’ll ever see. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 25 of 41 passes for 319 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. Lawrence looks like he’s well on his way to becoming a good NFL quarterback, even if he doesn’t have a good team around him. Neither of these teams have much around their...
BOSTON (CBS) — The New England Patriots have a new member of the NFL Top 100 club, as cornerback J.C. Jackson has made his debut on the list of the league’s top players. The list is made from the votes of players who are asked to name the best players in the league, and Jackson landed at No. 49 on the list after his nine-interception season in 2020. READ MORE: Jonnu Smith Injured At Sundays Patriots Practice; Hunter Henry, Chase Winovich Return “It’s hard to coach a guy to be around the football all the time. And J.C. just has a nose for the ball. He’s just always around the ball. And not only that — when he gets around the ball he has good enough ball skills, great ball skills, to be able to finish plays,” teammate Matthew Slater said of Jackson. “You talk about a ball hawk — a guy’s either got it or he doesn’t. And J.C.’s got plenty of it.” The 25-year-old Jackson was an undrafted free agent by the Patriots in 2018, and he’s increased...
COVID-19’s delta variant is infecting more kids than previous waves of the virus. Unfortunately, it’s happening right as area schools begin reopening for the new school year. Alexandria City Public Schools has already returned from its summer break, and is giving other school systems in the D.C. region a real-world example of how to navigate the challenges to come. Rene Paschal, the principal at Samuel Tucker Elementary, said his summer was at least twice as busy as it usually is. School staff were given more responsibility as kids return to the classes and hallways. That means observing proper masking, which will have to be worn in every school building around the region this year. But it goes beyond that — schools will also be checking temperatures on a regular basis, and “have a lot more monitoring happening so that we’re not having a large number of kids in spaces throughout the day,” said Dr. Gregory Hutchings Jr., the superintendent of Alexandria City schools. Air filtration systems are a big focus in every classroom, too. And there’s keeping up public health...
SALIDA, Colo. (CBS4) – On day two of a preliminary hearing for Barry Morphew, who is accused of killing his wife, Suzanne, much of the morning was spent rehashing Suzanne’s relationship with the man investigators have referred to as her lover, Jeff Libler. In the afternoon, prosecutors outlined Barry’s and Suzanne’s movements in the days surrounding her disappearance. (credit: Morphew family) In September of 2020, Suzanne’s best friend, Shelia Oliver advised Suzanne that she should begin tucking away money to be able to live on her own. At some point, Suzanne set up a secret Green Dot bank account as well as an account with a fund management company, Compass Management. The FBI agent on the stand, Ken Harris, said he didn’t follow up on these accounts. By February of 2020, Suzanne had acquired the spy pen to see if she could catch Barry cheating, but it only served to capture elements of her affair, later discovered by investigators. The spy pen also picked up arguments with Barry about finances, which Suzanne told Sheila most of their arguments revolved around....

Tokyo — American gymnastics superstar and defending champion Simone Biles removed herself from Thursday's all-around competition to focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said. The organization said in a statement Wednesday that "after further medical evaluation," Biles, 24, decided not to take part "in order to focus on her mental health." "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many," USA Gymnastics said. The statement said she'll "continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week's individual event finals." In many of those cases, it was less about getting good value than teams making bold moves. But the Boston Bruins kept Taylor Hall around with a pretty sweet deal. © Getty Images © Provided by NBC Sports Bruins sign Taylor Hall (four years, $6M AAV) Being that it’s four years, the Bruins mitigate some of the risk you’d normally associate with landing a player like Taylor Hall. The price tag isn’t too bad, either, as Hall will carry a manageable $6M AAV ($24M overall). That means Hall’s contract will run through the 2024-25 season. Interestingly, it expires at the same time as Brad Marchand‘s contract, which carries a steal of a $6.125M AAV. Will the Bruins be able to put it all together with Hall joining this core? That remains to be seen, but he was a fantastic fit for Boston. Beyond his scoring ability, Hall’s transition skill came...

The coach is set to publicly reveal his side to face South Africa in Saturday's First Test on Thursday. 2England's Courtney Lawes reckons he has done all he can for Lions selection Gatland has kept the Springboks guessing but after hours of agonising and heated selection meetings, the hard work has been done. Lawes, the versatile England forward capped twice against the All Blacks in 2017, will be one of those learning their fate in a team meeting before Thursday's official announcement. He said: "There’s not much you can do about it, so you’ve just got to enjoy the moment. "Part of playing in a team like this is that there will be some moments which could be good or bad for you. Regulators in Germany are poised to block one of the world's biggest porn sites, according to a report from our colleagues at WIRED UK. The country imposed age verification checks for adult sites recently, which some have yet to implement. The blocking would have to be carried out by ISPs and mobile data providers, who may attempt to fight the orders in court if it comes to that. A more aggressive form of internet censorship has played out this week in Cuba, as authorities disrupted access to major social media and messaging platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp in the face of ongoing civil unrest. Like Iran, China, and other oppressive regimes, Cuba has centralized control over the internet, which means it can block specific sites or wholesale access as it pleases. It's an increasingly common technique, enabled by the ongoing balkanization of the internet. As businesses around the world grappled with an ongoing ransomware catastrophe, we took a look at how hackers have increasingly turned to IT management software to pull off large-scale attacks. Despite signing a new contract with SiriusXM worth a reported $500 million, Howard Stern is routinely criticized for being less outrageous and creating less content than ever before. Earlier this week, the famous shock jock stunned his fans, announcing an epically long summer vacation that will keep him off the airwaves until after Labor Day. The mellowed “King of All Media” already worked a reduced schedule during his last contract, hosting shows just three days a week with plenty of vacations mixed in. But according to Stern, his new five-year deal came with the ability to work even less. https://www.mediaite.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Howard-Stern-On-Summer-Vacation.mp3 “When this last contract was up, I took a look at my life and was like well OK, maybe it’s time,” Stern told his audience before saying goodbye for two months. “But when they (SiriusXM) came up with this plan of instead of doing 112 shows, do 100, I thought OK I could do that and I can still be connected to my fans.” In the decades preceding his tenure with satellite radio, Stern created a community of and...

Getty Barry Sanders before a Lions game in 2016. The Detroit Lions had a winning team when Barry Sanders was running the ball even if they never won the big game, and as an alumni of the team, Sanders wants to see things get turned around as much as the fans. Through the years, the Lions have been the team that simply can’t get things right. They have tried time and again to field a winner to compete with the other pro teams in town, but simply haven’t gotten over the hump for one reason or another. With a new staff, however, it could be time for that to change. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions!
