DENVER (CBS4) – Three Ukrainian refugees bravely shared their stories on Tuesday morning inside U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette’s Denver office. “They experienced the bombing and the first minutes of the war at five o’clock in the morning on February 24,” an interpreter explained. Katerina Khmil, her daughter Tetiana Khmil, and Iryna Rothko all leave families behind, including their husbands and children. They arrived in the U.S. a matter of days ago, after being forced to flee their war-torn home of Ukraine. In total, more than three million Ukrainians have left since the war broke out. “In the beginning, it was total denial,” said Rothko. The women say Ukrainians knew that Russian attacks could be imminent; however, they never thought they’d have to resort to leaving. “One month prior to the war, in school, kids were taught how to hide in the shelter. They were getting prepared for the war,” Rothko said. “That’s how you have to survive,” said Tetiana. “They bomb every single night nonstop.” “It’s heartbreaking watching the women with little kids and older people with the sound of...
Two things stand out from the grovelling legal statement that Prince Andrew issued last night. One is the absence of any suggestion that he might be innocent of the very serious sexual offences that Virginia Roberts (now Mrs Giuffre) has been publicly accusing him of for seven long years. Often, when vast sums of money are paid to settle a high-profile legal case, the person writing the cheque gets to insert a clause that might vaguely exonerate them. It tends to contain words to the effect that they deny wrongdoing. Although there is no suggestion that Andrew is, in fact, guilty, that no such privilege was afforded to him reflects the degree to which he has been forced to concede defeat. Put simply, his tin-eared response to this long-running scandal has seen him slowly, but surely, run out of options to avoid a costly and squalid court case that would further damage the British monarchy, perhaps irreparably. The only option remaining was to accept this abject public humiliation. Friends: The Duke even invited the American to social events Balmoral and...

After Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19 last week, the earliest he can get back in the Packers’ building is Saturday. Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur said on Thursday that Rodgers is doing what he can virtually. “It’s been going great. The communication’s been there,” LaFleur said in his press conference. “He’s been in every meeting. He’s been engaged. So, it’s just he’s not with his guys out on the field. That’s the dynamic that you never know. But we’re very fortunate to have a guy that has got a ton of reps under his belt, has played a lot of ball. So we’re pretty confident that provided he checks out well, that he can go...
EUROPEAN clubs have blasted Fifa’s plans for a World Cup every two years. Fifa president Gianni Infantino wants to turn it into a biennial event from the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA. 3Fifa’s plans to have the World Cup tournament every two years has been blastedCredit: AP:Associated Press 3Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar is one of those leading the fight against itCredit: EPA Yet top clubs including Ajax and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Uefa chief Alexander Ceferin, waged war against the proposals — outlined by Fifa bigwig Arsene Wenger. Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, now Ajax chief exec, emerged from yesterday’s three-hour meeting and fumed: “The clubs are not having it. It is a ludicrous idea. There is a lot of opposition. It would change everything. “Football is all about clubs first and has to be. We must put the players first and this would not do that. The Leagues will also have the same view.” New European Club Association chief and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi added: “The mood of the clubs...
UEFA is increasingly confident its planned Champions League revamp will be agreed by next month - despite opposition from leagues. A virtual meeting over the proposals with the 55 Uefa member associations found no significant issues. 3Bayern Munich beat PSG to win the Champions League finalCredit: Reuters Uefa wants to replace the current group stage of the Champions League with a 36-team single table. Each side will play 10 opponents of varying strengths under the so-called “Swiss system”. The top eight automatically qualify for the knock-out stage and the teams between ninth and 24th the go into play-offs to join them. SunSport revealed in December the most controversial aspect of the proposals, with three of the four extra places being awarded via Uefa’s “coefficient” of previous European results. That could see up to SIX Premier League sides in the competition when the restructure - due from 2024-25 - comes into effect. It opens the way for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United AND Spurs to all share millions in extra Euro revenue from 2024. Uefa is keen to formally launch its proposals to spike the guns...
Every city and county in California is required to plan for adequate housing across income levels. But how many actually issue enough permits to meet their state-mandated construction goals? For the second year, the Southern California News Group has created a report card to show how every jurisdiction in the state is doing. Report card: California cities, counties failing again on affordable housing goals Making the grade Through a process called the Regional Housing Needs Assessment, or RHNA (pronounced “reena”), cities and counties are given goals every five or eight years for how much housing they need to add that would be affordable to residents in four categories: Very low income (0-50% of area median income) Low income (51-80% of area median income) Moderate income (81-120% of area median income) Above moderate income (120+% of area median income) They’re supposed to file progress reports annually to California’s housing department — though not all do. Data from 2019’s progress reports, which the state released in October 2020, is the basis for SCNG’s latest report card. ...

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell doubled down on the league's support for Black Lives Matter activism, including featuring social justice messages on end zones. “The NFL stands with the black community, the players, clubs, and fans,” Goodell said Tuesday. “We will not relent in our work.” “Confronting recent systemic racism with tangible and productive steps is absolutely essential ... We will redouble our efforts to be catalysts for the urgent and sustainable change that our society and communities so desperately need," he continued. He added that “It Takes All Of Us” will be featured on one end line of football fields and “End Racism” will be on the other in every stadium this season. By listening and working and understanding with our players, we built the foundation for tangible change through our Inspire Change initiative,” Goodell said. The...
WEST LOOP — Whitney Young Magnet High School is keeping police officers at the selective enrollment West Loop school following a contentious debate Wednesday. Though all students, alumni and parents who spoke urged the committee to listen to students and set an example by ousting officers from the prestigious school, Whitney Young’s local school council voted 8-5 to keep police officers after more than two hours of discussion. Following unrest stemming from police killing George Floyd in Minneapolis, activists have demanded Chicago Public Schools cut ties with the Police Department and remove officers from schools as part of a larger movement against police violence. City and district leaders have resisted taking widespread action, instead requiring local school councils to make decisions for their own campuses. Alumna Destiny Harris said Black and Brown students are over-policed in every aspect of their lives and the school doesn’t need to have officers policing students while they are getting an education. Officers on campus only perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline, she said. Asha Edwards, a 2019 alumna, said the removal of cops from schools is a...
