Flu hospitalizations in the U.S. remain at the highest level in a decade as 47 states and territories report "high" or "very high" levels of flu activity at the start of the holiday season. Flu-associated hospital admissions for the week of Thanksgiving nearly doubled over the previous week and were the highest observed for that period since the 2010-2011 season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PFIZER-BIONTECH ASKS FDA TO AUTHORIZE OMICRON BOOSTER FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5 "This year’s flu season is off to a rough start," Dr. Sandra Fryhofer, board chairwoman of the American Medical Association, said at a media briefing Monday. "Flu is here. It started early, and with COVID and RSV also circulating, it’s a perfect storm for a terrible holiday season." Roughly 19,500 patients were admitted to hospitals with the flu in the week ending on Nov. 26. The CDC estimates that there have been at least 8.7 million illnesses, 78,000 hospitalizations, and 4,500 deaths from the flu so far this season, including 14 pediatric deaths. Case numbers are...
Mask-free revelry, office parties and even kissing under the mistletoe are making a comeback as polls show Americans by wide margins say the pandemic will not disrupt their lives this holiday season. After the Omicron-variant surge that upended last year's festivities, this Christmas is set to become the first 'Covid-worry free holiday' season since the pandemic arrived in early 2020, according to Cliff Young, of Ipsos pollsters. The group's survey of more than 1,100 Americans found that 86 percent said the country was in a better place than a year ago, and 70 percent said the pandemic was largely not disrupting their daily lives. Still, the US has seen an uptick in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations since Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, and hospital capacity is stretched thin by epidemic levels of the flu and RSV. A survey of more than 1,100 US adults found that 86 percent said the country was in a better place than a year ago The office Christmas party is making a comeback this year, as Americans by wide margins say the...

COVID-19 cases are surging in the Bay Area and California since Thanksgiving, as holiday gatherings appear to have fueled the virus’ spread among a pandemic-weary public no longer masking or lining up for the latest vaccine booster. Cases in the nine-county Bay Area have jumped from an average of 8 daily cases per 100,000 residents in late October to over 13 at the end of November, an 80% increase. Every Bay Area county is in at least the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s second-highest substantial transmission level, and Santa Clara and Solano counties already are at the high level. Santa Clara and Marin counties have risen from the CDC’s low to medium community level, reflecting the virus’ impact on local hospitals. “We are seeing a Thanksgiving effect,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus of infectious diseases and vaccinology at the University of California-Berkeley. But he’s not surprised, as the rise started before the recent holidays. And with Christmas and New Year’s celebrations around the corner “there is no question in my mind that we’re going to see...

With the holiday season, fast approaching members of local law enforcement are cautioning Ohioans about increased holiday theft and how to keep themselves and their property safe while shopping in stores or online. Ohio law enforcement agencies state that they see an uptick in theft reports towards the end of the year. “There are more porch pirates, people who steal newly delivered packages left outside others’ homes, as well as thefts from vehicles and general thefts as the holidays approach,” Euclid Police Department’s community policing specialist and crime analyst Kate McLaughlin said. According to a joint report from the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants and the University of Cincinnati’s Economics Center, the holiday sales forecast predicts a 3.4% increase compared to 2021. Statistics show Ohioans spent $30.3 billion on holiday shopping in 2021, which was a 6.4% increase from 2020. Security Tags says that increased holiday foot traffic, busy employees, chaotic stores, and colder weather, meaning bulkier clothing, makes the holiday season the optimal time for theft. In addition to the increased opportunity, they say, one of the major drivers...

Black Friday isn’t as popular as it once was. Gone are the days of buyers trampling each other in the wee hours for a chance to buy the newest gaming console, a TV at half the price or the latest gadget garnering the country’s attention. The top spot for massive spending ahead of the holidays now goes to Cyber Monday, a virtual shopping spree dominated by Amazon, Apple and other online retail giants. But again this year, small businesses are pushing back with a buy-local campaign dubbed Small Business Saturday. Across the Bay Area, mom-and-pop shops that have struggled to stay in business amid pandemic closures and inventory supply-chain woes — and the continued shift to online retailing — are asking folks to save some of their holiday shopping dollars for them this season. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and supporting them is investing in your local communities,” said Cynthia Bonior, president of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. “In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical now, more than ever, that all of us be champions...

In San Jose, volunteers and staff members at the nonprofit joined forces to provide free hot meals for an expected 300-plus individuals, filling bellies with turkey, mashed potatoes and all the trimming while putting plenty of big grins on faces that might not have otherwise had much to smile about during the holiday. “I wouldn’t have had Thanksgiving,” Chacon says. “I’m homeless so I wouldn’t have anywhere to go.” Seeing people enjoying the occasion together in the dining room — as opposed to just lining up to receive to-go...

The event is free, but “donations are appreciated.”  See Attachment
