BOSTON (CBS) – Talking about pain in your life can be a powerful healer and it’s the idea behind a community-based program addressing mental health and trauma. “Can We Talk” is also helping those battling addiction. “It was crippling,” said Prentice Crowell, talking about his own addiction. He’s been recovering for eight years and now sees how Boston has struggled to clean up the drug hotspot known as Mass and Cass. The tents are mostly gone, but the problems are still very much here. “An addict is always fighting his addiction. You know for me I deal with my addition 24-7. Every day I have to deal with the fact that part of me still wants to use,” he told WBZ-TV. What has been a lifesaver for him, he says, is simply talking. “It’s important that we share our pain,” he said. He does that through “Can We Talk,” a program with others who’ve experienced trauma. It was started by a member of our WBZ-TV family, Rev. Liz Walker. Read: ‘Can We Talk’ Helps Trauma Survivors Share Stories Of Pain,...

Congress must slash bloated military budget The U.S. nuclear weapons and military budgets increased dramatically under Donald Trump and sickeningly, will increase again under Joe Biden. But this year’s check has not yet been signed by Congress. Now is a great time to get on the horn to Sens. Alex Padilla and Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Mark DeSaulnier and ask them to take a leadership role in cutting these hugely bloated budgets. Why are they growing? The United States continues to push the envelope in promoting the development of new nuclear weapons, a pivotal one right here in the Bay Area at Livermore Lab – the W87-1 Warhead. The entire Bay Area sits in the Livermore Lab’s environmental impact zone for plutonium and other radioactive and hazardous materials releases from this research. We don’t need these nuclear weapons, we don’t have money for these weapons, and we don’t want the cancer this research causes. Call and ask that the budgets be slashed. Loulena Miles Richmond...

Sun Racing reporter Jack Keene opens up about his battle with a gambling problem I’m a racing journalist and I have a gambling problem. This will be news to a lot of people and it’s not an easy subject to talk about given my line of work - if I had a quid for every time I’d heard ‘that’s like an alcoholic working in a pub’. I love racing and my career, despite being constantly exposed to gambling. It’s difficult, but if I can get on top of my issues then you can, too. Betting on sports can be a harmless and enjoyable pastime for most people, but for a lot of us it can have terrible consequences. My problems began when...
