Photo by David Livingston/Getty Images CNN CEO Chris Licht has hired extra security for his 17th floor office following mass layoffs that swept the network in recent weeks, according to a report by Puck News’ Dylan Byers, but a representative for the network vociferously denied the story in a comment to Mediaite. Last Thursday, CNN made major cuts to its staffing list as part of a revamp of the network under the leadership of Licht. According to Puck, sources inside the network reported that Thursday, Licht appeared to have an increased presence of security around him and his office on the 17th floor. Earlier in the day, Licht had told staffers that he would be in the executive conference room with the “door open, so that employees could talk directly with him about the new round of layoffs”: Some CNN sources who passed by Licht on Thursday did notice the presence of multiple security guards standing outside of the conference room, and at least one walking around with Licht as he moved about the floor. The website did distinguish that...
Mike Sonne likes to joke that his family members are terrible Canadians. They don’t care much, if at all, for hockey. But they love baseball. When Sonne was a kid, it became a tradition to attend a Blue Jays game on his birthday. After moving from Toronto to Windsor, Ontario, all that separated them from a big-league game was the Detroit River and roughly three miles to the Tigers ballpark. “I was a baseball fan,” Sonne told the Tribune, “and then it became evident that there was so much publicly available baseball data that I could start testing hypotheses and do those nerdy things that I love to do.” His unique baseball journey brought him to the Chicago Cubs. Sonne initially connected with the team through assistant general manager and director of pitching Craig Breslow in 2019. Sonne spoke to the pitching group during an organizational education week held annually in January, when the Cubs bring in external experts to discuss industry trends, what the private sector is working on and how to integrate some of that information into their...
"What better way to celebrate Pride than being ordained?!" she stated. "Many thanks to my church and classis for being willing to stand for queer folks being included in ministry and for allowing me to follow Gods call." In June 2021, Christ Community Reformed Church in New York confirmed on Facebook that "Reverend Kate Newendorp" had been officially ordained. However, Newendorp must eventually have faced some pushback regarding her ordination, because, in October, she wrote on her own Facebook wall, "Also your casual reminder that my validity as an ordained minister is currently under review by my denomination because of the love I feel for my fiancé. "Do better Church, because Im not going anywhere. I was called," she added. Elsewhere, Newendorp has also advocated for unfettered abortion access as a matter of "religious freedom" and for Democrat politicians who do not acknowledge that marriage is between one man and one woman. Her social media accounts have since turned private. And Newendorp is not the only alarming spiritual adviser now on staff at Childrens Wisconsin. "Spiritual care intern" Meg Trimm...

Around 100 fighters from the Central African Republic were recruited by the shadowy military company after quitting their country's Union for Peace (UPC) rebel group. They were trained and sent to the front lines in March but they now say they have lost contact with their military bosses and are surviving by stealing from Ukrainian civilians, sources have revealed. Around 50 of their fellow troops have also 'mysteriously disappeared' and Russia is refusing to say where they are. : A view of a ruined building after Ukrainian army retaken control from the Russian forces in Lyman RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Putin 'has lost 160 generals and colonels among 1,500... Donald Trump is the first ex-president in U.S. history to announce another presidential run when he was facing two major investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ): one pertaining to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Building, the other pertaining to government documents stored at Mar-a-Lago. Trump announced his 2024 presidential run on November 15, and only three days later, on November 18, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he was appointing a special counsel, Jack Smith, to conduct DOJ’s two Trump-related investigations. Legal experts have been stressing that in both cases, Smith already has enough evidence for an indictment. Regardless, Smith is obviously determined to proceed with caution, not unlike Garland. The word “institutionalist” has often been used to describe Garland, and it easily applies to Smith as well — which is why Garland chose him. In the past, Smith was an assistant U.S. attorney and headed DOJ’s Public Integrity Section. But the fact that Garland decided to hire a special counsel for DOJ’s two Trump-related investigations, according to New York Times reporter...
Keep yourself up to date with all the changes on the college football coaching carousel. With the 2022 college football regular season pretty much in the books, that means the coaching carousel will now be in full effect. It was an especially strange season in the coaching department, as several marquee Power Five jobs opened up well before Halloween. Though most opportunities opening up were not at places where it is all that easy to contend for national championships, national titles have been won before at places like Auburn, Colorado and Georgia Tech. We are only just getting started, people… Here is what the coaching carousel has left us with now that the 2022 regular season is history.College football coaching carousel: Who has been fired? More than 3,000 scientists and public health experts hired to assist the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) pandemic response are being let go. Their contracts are set to expire over the coming weeks across the US and they will not be renewed, as part of the country's winding down of Covid spending. The CDC Foundation — an independent body that supports the CDC's work — recruited 4,000 epidemiologists, communication experts , and public health nurses during the pandemic. But only 800 are set to keep their jobs when they are brought on by local health departments because the foundation has spent nearly all of its $289million Covid relief budget. Staff set to lose their jobs expressed exasperation at a failure to renew contracts ahead of a looming 'tripledemic' of Covid, flu and RSV, the latter two of which are already wreaking havoc on hospitals.  Katie Schenk, a senior epidemiologist who worked in Illinois and Washington DC until this summer, said the loss was 'detrimental' to public health and they were shedding staff 'like there's no tomorrow'. But the...

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has employed over a dozen individuals who’ve worked in a range of capacities at China-based nonprofits set up or co-opted by Chinese intelligence agencies, including the Ministry of State Security (MSS) and the intel arm of the People’s Liberation Army. These individuals have served as experts in various policy areas, including international relations, American politics and nuclear policy while working at both the think tank’s D.C. headquarters and at its Tsinghua University center in Beijing. Quentin Tarantino has said film directors 'can't wait' for the hype around superhero movies to die off. The Oscar-winning director, 59, said blockbusters from the likes of Marvel and DC have a 'chokehold' over Hollywood. In his new book, Cinema Speculation, Tarantino says current directors 'can't wait for the day' the genre's popularity declines - and likens current superhero mania to the 60s obsession with studio musical adaptations. Elaborating on the view in a recent interview, he added: 'The analogy works because it's a similar chokehold.' Tom Brady has issued another rallying cry to his team following another abysmal performance in the NFL over the weekend. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 21-3 to the Carolina Panthers in what was a huge Week 7 shock. The defeat came a week after they were beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brady launched into an angry rant then as he cut a frustrated figure and he took to social media a day later to vow that he and his teammates will turn things around. There was no sideline meltdown in Charlotte on Sunday but Brady urged his under-performing team to 'pull ourselves out' of the slump post-game.   'No one feels good about where we're at, no one feels good about how we've played or what we're doing,' he said. The Texas Rangers’ top managerial candidate has always been Bruce Bochy. It was just a matter of convincing him to step back into the dugout. On Friday, the Texas Rangers announced the hiring of Bochy, and it marks what the organization hopes is the beginning of a “championship culture.” It also marks a drastic change from their previous organizational philosophy. Their last three hires — Ron Washington, Jeff Banister and Chris Woodward — were all first-time managers. Thirteen of their 19 hires in the last 51 years have been first-time managers. Bruce Bochy solidified his Hall of Fame career in a Giants uniform. It was in San Francisco that he won three World Series titles and held down his big-league managing job for 12 of 25 uninterrupted years at the helm (the other 13 years with San Diego) until his retirement after the 2019 season. But retirement was temporary for Bochy, who signed a three-year deal to become the Texas Rangers’ manager starting next season. After a three-year hiatus, the 67-year-old will add another chapter to his Hall of Fame career. In Bochy, the Rangers hired leader who can tie together an organization both in flux and spending to contend. They recently signed infield stars Corey Seager and Marcus Semien to lucrative contracts and committed $181 million in payroll last season only to finish with a .420 winning percentage, fourth in the AL West. "Elaine and I are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of our good friend Judge Tom Emberton," McConnell said. "Tom gave me one of my earliest experiences in the rough and tumble reality of political campaigning, hiring me to work on his 1971 gubernatorial campaign. He taught me valuable lessons on public service and running as a statewide Republican in Kentucky. Tom advocated for conservative values across our state and played a key role in organizing Kentucky Republicans at every level, paving the way for me and so many other conservatives to follow in his footsteps." Below is an old political ad from Emberton's 1971 campaign: Emberton ultimately lost the race to Wendell Ford. In 1987, Governor Wallace Wilkinson, a Democrat, appointed Emberton to serve on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Emberton was then reelected to the position twice and also served as chief judge. He retired in 2004. Tom and Julia Emberton had been married for 65 years at the time of his death. They had two children, five grandchildren, and at least one great-grandchild. ...
Two UCLA students were thrilled to kick off their summer as camp counselors for children of university alumni, but instead found themselves in an intense hazing ritual that involved stripping naked in front of coworkers and binge drinking that led to sexual assault.  Samea Derrick, 19, and Lydia Dixon, 20, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against the University of California Regents this week claiming that they were sexually assaulted by two men at the camp. Bruin Woods is a student-run Lake Arrowhead summer getaway camp for UCLA alumni and families that's described on their website as the ideal place for alumni to come together, reconnect as well as make new connections.   But for Derrick and Dixon, instead of networking opportunities during their week-long stint in June, they claim they were subjected to physical and verbal abuse, forced to binge drink and strip naked. Both students left the camp less than a week into the 11-week program.   Derrick told ABC7 that she had gone to both the leadership of the counselor group and those running Bruin Woods...
Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder has made attempts to convince his fellow NFL owners of his innocence while he's currently under investigation by the league. In a long letter sent to each owner in the league, Snyder addressed an article from ESPN claiming he hired private investigators to dig up 'dirt' on other owners in the league as well as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. 'That is patently false and intended to erode the trust and goodwill between owners that I take quite seriously. I have never hired any private investigator to look into any owner or the Commissioner. I have never instructed or authorized my lawyers to hire any private investigator on my behalf for any such purpose. And I never would. He also said ESPN, 'ignored our efforts to correct the many falsehoods in their article before its publication.' Snyder hinted at challenging ESPN, he continued in the letter: 'Falsehoods and lies being spread about any of our organizations hurts our league, our players and our fans, and we simply cannot let them go unchallenged.'  Commanders owner Dan Snyder...

Bundchen and Brady have reportedly hired divorce lawyers and Bucs star Brady was pictured this week without his wedding ring on.  Brady's obsession with football, and his dramatic unretiring from the sport earlier in 2022, are said to be central reason's behind Bundchen's unhappiness. His impassioned speech comes amid divorce rumors after weeks of rising speculation over the state of his marriage to Bundchen.  Bundchen, 42, and Brady, 45, have reportedly hired divorce lawyers 13 years after saying 'I do' in 2009, according to multiple reports.  The supermodel, who has not attended any Bucs games this season, took the lead on hiring an attorney and the NFL star followed while 'figuring out what to do,' according to People. By Dale Kasler | The Sacramento Bee SACRAMENTO — PG&E’s efforts to improve wildfire safety continue to run into headwinds, including aging equipment, damaged power poles and hazardous trees that went undetected by the utility’s crews, according to a consulting firm hired by California officials. In addition, consultant Filsinger Energy Partners said PG&E’s progress on wildfire safety is being hindered by the global supply chain crisis, which is making it harder for the utility to replace infrastructure and equipment that are growing obsolete. Filsinger’s report to the Public Utilities Commission was released Monday afternoon. The commission hired the Denver-based consultant as part of PG&E’s plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2020 — a bankruptcy prompted by the company’s struggles to contend with billions of dollars in liabilities caused by a flurry of massive wildfires. The report released Monday is the first of several Filsinger will write. The report doesn’t make sweeping conclusions but found some of the same shortcomings in PG&E’s fire safety efforts that a court-appointed inspector discovered last year. For example, Filsinger found trees, apparently...

A lawsuit submitted by Blackwells Capital LLC claims that Foley and other members of the company's board of directors 'profited mightily' by selling portions of their Peloton shares 'immediately before Peloton's major stock price decline began.' Still, those executives continue to wield the voting power at the once-popular fitness company, Blackwells claims, even after Foley, 51, stepped down from the board last month. The investment management firm — Peloton's largest shareholder — has now filed a complaint in the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware asking a judge to force Peloton to turn over all of its financial records, restructuring plans, forecasts and board communications from April 17, 2020 through the present. When Blackwells previously asked company executives for these documents, the lawsuit states, the company asked its executives to sign a non-disclosure agreement saying it would not reveal what it saw to other shareholders. The firm...

At one point in the debate, Ryan dragged Vance over his anti-drug nonprofit “Our Ohio Renewal,” which Ryan said took advantage of Ohioans struggling with drug addiction.“You know what I haven’t done?” Ryan asked during the debate at WJW Fox 8’s headquarters in Cleveland. “I didn’t start a fake nonprofit pretending I was going to help people with addiction like JD Vance did — literally started a nonprofit and didn’t spend one nickel on anybody.” “In fact, he brought in somebody from Perdue Pharma to be the spokesperson for the nonprofit,” Ryan continued. “The same drug company, Big Pharma, the big drug company, that had all the pill mills going, got everybody addicted. One million people died, JD. One million people died. And you started a nonprofit to try and take advantage of people in Ohio. And you know what? All you did with it was launch...
