The father of a Missouri teenager who died after he fell 430 feet from an amusement park ride says park officials are 'sweeping his son's death under the rug' because he is black. Yarnell Sampson said at a news conference on Monday that authorities at the ICON Park in Orlando, Florida have continued to let the Free Fall ride stand since his son, Tyre, fell from the ride in March after he slipped out of his seat and crashed into the ground. An autopsy revealed last week that Tyre died from blunt force trauma after he smashed into the concrete below the ride. It also revealed that Tyre weighed 393 pounds, well above the ride manual's weight limit of 287 pounds. He suffered numerous broken bones and internal injuries in the fall, which was ruled an accidental death, and Yarnell said that at his funeral his son's bloated face was unrecognizable. An initial report by outside engineers hired by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services also found that sensors on the ride had been adjusted manually to double the size...

ALAMEDA — The death of Mario Gonzalez, the 26-year-old man who died just over a year ago in Alameda police custody, was caused by restraint asphyxiation, according to an independent autopsy requested by family attorneys and released Wednesday. That autopsy was commissioned by civil rights law firm Haddad and Sherwin on behalf of Gonzalez’s son Mario Gonzalez-Cortez and family members in a civil suit against the city, the officers and the police department’s former chief. A previous Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s autopsy differed on the cause of death, but the two reports do agree that the manner of Gonzalez’s death was homicide, or death at the hands of another person. Mario Gonzalez is restrained by Alameda police officers on April 19 in a video from an officer’s body-worn camera. (Alameda Police Department)  Alameda police Officer Erick McKinley was among several officers who responded on April 19, 2021 in the city’s Scout Park after a resident called police to claim Gonzalez’s presence was scaring his wife. “Van lifer” Brian Laundrie killed himself while on the run from authorities, family lawyer Steve Bertolino said Tuesday. “Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” Bertolino said in an emailed statement to The Daily Beast. “Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.” Laundrie was the lone suspect in the disappearance and death of 22-year-old Gabby Petito, who was in the midst of a cross-country road trip with Laundrie, her fiancé, when she vanished. On Sept. 1, Laundrie, 23, returned to the North Port, Florida, home he and Petito had been sharing with Laundrie’s parents. But Petito, inexplicably, wasn’t with him, and 10 days later, her parents reported her missing. SAN JOSE – Authorities have confirmed that San Jose State University student Gregory Johnson Jr. died by suicide in the basement of his Sigma Chi fraternity house more than 13 years ago. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office determined Johnson’s Nov. 22, 2008, death to be a suicide. His parents, however, had challenged that ruling, saying their son was not suicidal. As a result, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office asked Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner Dr. Michelle Jorden to re-examine the investigation and provide an opinion as to the cause and manner of death. The SJSU Police Department, which investigated the case, turned over its entire file to Jorden, according to the district attorney’s office. The file included crime lab reports and written submissions by Johnson’s family detailing why they disputed the cause and manner of death. Jorden ultimately reached the same conclusion as Dr. Glenn Nazareno, the forensic pathologist who performed Johnson’s autopsy. Nazareno, who has since died, noted ligature marks on and injuries to Johnson’s neck and concluded the manner of death was suicide, caused by ligature...
