OAKLAND — The execution-style shooting of 31-year-old Carolina Carrillo-Mendoza had all the makings of a domestic violence-related homicide. Her ex-boyfriend, Matias Mendoza, 21, was seen with her the previous day at a nearby liquor store and later arrested and charged with murder. But something troubled investigators: it was clear from surveillance video that two vehicles were involved in the killing, and police had only identified one, Mendoza’s car. Detectives later uncovered a deeper motive behind Carrillo-Mendoza’s killing: gang members, nervous she knew the details of a triple-homicide in Richmond four months earlier and suspicious she was dating rival gang members, plotted to lure her to a secluded area of the Oakland hills. She was shot between the eyes on the 4800 block of Redwood Road. By the investigation’s end, authorities had tied six homicides — two in Oakland, one in Stockton, and the triple-homicide in Richmond — to the Sureño subset known as SSL-502, a gang made up predominantly of Guatemalan-Americans. Four of the alleged gang members were charged with at least one count of murder each. The first major development in...
America's worrying rise in murder rates is felt most acutely in Kansas City, Detroit and St Louis, says a study that blames soft-on-crime policies and efforts to defund the police for a nationwide uptick in homicides. Researchers found that Kansas City, Missouri, saw the steepest rise from July to September this year, when it saw 15 murders for every 100,000 people, compared to the same periods in the previous two years. Its crime problem was on show again this week, when police opened homicide probes after two people were found dead in an apartment in the Santa Fe Hills neighborhood and another woman was found dead from gunshot wounds in her car. Rounding out the top five homicide hotspots were Detroit, Michigan, St Louis, Missouri, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Denver, Colorado, was the best performing of the 50 big cities in the study. It comes as public safety and law and order remain key issues for voters in November's midterm elections, and soft-on-crime policies and calls to defund police forces could hurt Democrats in some crime-ridden cities. America's...

San Antonio police have revealed Erik Cantu, the 17-year-old shot by rookie cop James Brennand, was not driving a stolen car.  Brennand confronted Cantu as he thought the car was stolen, before abruptly shooting the teen multiple times and leaving him on life support.  Brennand has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault by a peace officer and is seen in a new mugshot after turning himself in to police. China has set up dozens of secret police stations around the world, including one in New York City, to hunt down and retrieve dissidents.  A new report from Safeguard Defenders, a human rights watchdog, revealed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has at least 54 'overseas police service stations' in 30 different countries, including the US.  New York's station, located on East Broadway between Chinatown and the Lower East Side, was open on February 15, according to the Chinese-language news site FJSEN.  Like many of police stations around the world, the New York site is promoted as a place to assist Chinese nationals through bureaucracy, but since the programs launch in April 2021, China reported that it had 'persuaded' 230,000 Chinese nationals to return home.   Although the CCP claims the stations are meant to keep an eye on 'fraud and telecom fraud' committed by citizens living aboard, the human rights group condemned the stations.   Laura Harth, the Safeguard Defenders' campaign manager, said it was shocking to learn that China was carrying out police operations in foreign countries.  'I think it shows...

BALAKLIYA, Eastern Ukraine—“Our father who art in heaven,” begins the words of the Lord's Prayer scratched into the side of a wall in a police station turned torture chamber in the recently liberated city of Balakliya. The floors of the cells are still stained with blood, and the stench of human waste and rotting food is overwhelming. At the top are a series of scratches marking the days passed, and next to them, a simple cross. For six months, this police station, as with many others in the region, was the center of a brutal Russian occupation regime based on violence and fear. Ukrainian officials claim to have found at least ten of these interrogation centers spread throughout the liberated territory.
The daughter of murdered Georgia mother Debbie Collier's MMA fighter boyfriend allegedly wrote a disturbing note threatening the entire family with violence just last year after he'd been accused of beating up Collier's daughter.  Collier, 59, was found dead, naked and her body burned, tied to a tree on September 11 in Athens, Georgia. No one has been arrested for her brutal killing and there is no indication that either Bearden or her boyfriend, Andrew Giegerich, are being considered suspects. However, a handwritten message contained in police evidence files shows what is believed to be Giegerich writing 'If you or your family ever come near me again I will hurt them' in a note to Bearden in 2021, according to the New York Post. Giegerich - who was jailed on September 16 for violating probation and has a history of domestic violence incidents - reiterates: 'Have a nice life you lying ass b***h. Don’t ever contact me again!!!' He has been ordered to show proof of treatment for substance abuse within 20 days of his arrest, but was released and seen...
