On the contrary: A franchise can be a safe place to park money and ride out a bear market. 'I'm resting pretty easy if I'm an owner,' said Tim Clarke, a senior analyst at PitchBook, which researches private financial markets. 'That's how people are viewing assets of the professional sports industry. They're just not going...

SYDNEY (AP) — Manchester United is reported to be interested in joining its English Premier League city rival and become a team owner in Australia’s A-League. Nine newspapers reported Tuesday that Manchester United officials were in discussions with Central Coast Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth, who has been seeking a buyer for the cash-strapped club for the past year. Matches would be played at either North Sydney Oval or Brookvale Oval in Manly, the report says. Football Australia has been asked for comment and plans to respond later Tuesday. Manchester United’s desperation to solve their defensive crisis is about to cost them a lot of money. The club are poised to overpay for James Tarkowski.  James Tarkowski has the potential to be a quality Premier League centre back, but Manchester United should be setting their sights on better players. The idea of paying £50 million for the Burnley star should be laughed at by officials at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for fans of the Premier League club, that’s not the reality at United. Instead, the club seem poised to pay at least that much for the Burnley defender. According to The Athletic, United are prepared to make a move for the English centre back in the coming days. Tarkowski should be able to come in and provide some stability. The problem is that he just doesn’t have the talent to be anything more than a good player. He’s not the sort of transfer target...
