A nearly two-decade effort by Californians to cut their emissions of planet-warming carbon dioxide may have been erased by a single, devastating year of wildfires, according to UCLA and University of Chicago researchers. The state’s record-breaking 2020 fire season, which saw more than 4 million acres burn, spewed almost twice the tonnage of greenhouse gases as the total amount of carbon dioxide reductions made since 2003, according to a study published recently in the journal Environmental Pollution. Researchers estimated that about 127 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent were released by the fires, compared with about 65 million metric tons of reductions achieved in the previous 18 years. “When we look at the contribution of the 2020 wildfires, it becomes almost like a new sector of emissions in the economy,” said Michael Jerrett, a professor of environmental health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and a lead author of the research. “Really, we’re about double the reductions.” Climate & Environment As forests go up in smoke, so will California’s climate plan As wildfires become...
Russia has pounded Ukraine again with 'kamikaze' suicide drones, causing chaos in Kyiv as buildings erupted into fireballs and panicked citizens fled for safety or even tried to shoot them down. The Iran-supplied Shahed-136 weapons rained down on the capital in successive waves of 28 drones, Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko said.  Five smashed into the capital itself while 13 or more were shot down in the wider Kyiv region, all of them as they flew in from the south, said a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Yurii Ihnat. One strike appeared to target the city's heating network, hitting an operations centre while another slammed into a four-story residential building, ripping a large hole in it and collapsing at least three apartments on top of each other, killing three. The Shaheds, which Russia has rebranded as Geran-2 drones, pack an explosive charge and be fired one after the other. With a range of more than 600 miles, the explosive-laden drones can 'loiter' above potential targets for hours before being slammed directly into enemy soldiers, vehicles or buildings from above -...
New York Jets second-year wide receiver Elijah Moore responded to a tweet about his lack of targets in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers. New York football is officially back and thriving. Not only are the Buffalo Bills thriving, but also the Giants and Jets. Speaking of the Jets, they traveled to Green Bay to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, and they walked out with a 27-10 win (and a Cheesehead for cornerback Sauce Gardner). The passing offense took a bit of a back seat due to the success of the running game (179 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries). But, as ESPN’s Rich Cimini pointed out, second-year wide receiver Elijah Moore did not receive a single target from quarterback Zach Wilson in the game. Moore responded to the tweet, saying that “if I say what I really wanna say…I’ll be the selfish guy,” but brings up that he is “grateful” that the team is winning. Moore does say, however, “just know that I don’t understand either” regarding his lack of targets. If I say...

Scouted selects products independently. If you purchase something from our posts, we may earn a small commission. For nearly all of my adult life, I have used the same liquid shampoo and conditioner without ever giving it a second thought. My hair was adequately clean, so I simply assumed that there wasn’t much value in trying out any other shampoo since most of them felt pretty much the same when I used it. However, as the thick plastic bottles began to pile up, I wanted to see if there was a way to reduce my own environmental impact while still maintaining the same level of cleanliness. The Ethique Shampoo Bar proved unequivocally that the answer to that question is yes. The Ethique Shampoo Bar is exactly what it sounds like: instead of being a liquid, like most traditional shampoos, Ethique is a solid bar. So, as opposed to just pouring the shampoo into your hand and lathering your hair, you wet the bar and scrub your hair with it and then lather it through with your hands. While the transition...

New York (CNN Business)Wall Street analysts are typically — to quote an old REM song — shiny happy people. They don't often issue overly skeptical research reports on the companies they cover. And they tend not to ask executives tough questions on earnings calls, leaning toward a more "Great quarter, guys!" approach. So when analysts do issue highly bearish coverage of companies, it's worth paying attention. And lately there have been a brave few who have dared to be more critical. Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba, for one, recently set a $1 target for shares of Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), the stock that enjoyed a dramatic rise and equally stunning fall last week after GameStop (GME) chairman Ryan Cohen decided to sell his stake in the home goods retailer. In his most recent report, Chukumba warned of worries the chain's vendors could demand more onerous payments from the company, which could put Bed Bath & Beyond into a "death spiral." Russia has been hitting ground targets in Ukraine with a surface-to-air missiles, reports have said, the latest sign of growing logistical issues faced by Moscow. The Soviet-era S-300 missile system, first deployed in 1979, was originally designed to defend against air raids and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces. But reports from Ukraine have said the system has been used by Russian forces to attack ground targets, with the British Defence Ministry saying this suggests Vladimir Putin's forces are experiencing 'critical shortages' of ground-attack weapons. Reports said the missiles were equipped with an atypical explosive projectile that destroys everything in the vicinity of impact, with commentators accusing Russian forces of yet more war crimes for striking civilian areas with weapons capable of such indiscriminate destruction. On Thursday, Vitaly Kim - governor of the southern Mykolaiv region - said it had been targeted with seven S-300 missiles, with one person wounded and impacts on infrastructure, energy facilities and storage areas. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration dropped Nicaragua from a list of countries that can ship sugar to the United State at low import tax rates as the U.S. intensifies economic pressure on the authoritarian government of president Daniel Ortega. The U.S. hands out sugar import quotas annually by country and imposes relatively modest levies on shipments that come in below the cutoff. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative put out a list late Wednesday allocating quotas to 39 countries from Argentina to Zimbabwe for just over 1.1 million metric tons for raw sugar cane. The quotas cover the budget year 2023, which starts Oct. 1. Nicaragua, which got a quota of more than 22,000 metric tons in budget year 2022, was excluded from the 2023 list. Nicaragua last year exported $83.5 million worth of sugar to the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to trade for a catcher, one of these two targets makes since given Willson Contreras is a pipe dream. Contreras, rival on the arch rival Cubs, is not going to become a Cardinal overnight. It would be unwise for Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins to deal their prized backstop to St. Louis. With Contreras a free agent this offseason, St. Louis will wait their turn. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Tua Tagovailoa hit speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill with two long completions during the Miami Dolphins’ minicamp practice Thursday. And afterward, Tagovailoa hit back at critics. The third-year quarterback, aware that there are often questions — particularly on social media — about his arm strength and deep passing ability, went on the offensive about his abilities following the practice. “Yeah, if you saw the third-to-the-last play we had, I don’t know if I could throw the ball downfield still, but by my account I think that might have been a touchdown to Tyreek,” Tagovailoa said. “So however you want to write down any of that to social media or whatever outlets you guys are with, you do so.” Tagovailoa’s two highlight passes to Hill during Thursday’s practice each traveled at least 45 yards in the air. The first was good for 55 yards and a touchdown; the second went for 56 yards. Tagovailoa had no completions of 50 yards or longer as a rookie in 2020 and three last season, though two — a...

A WARNING has been issued over a dangerous dolphin that has reportedly separated swimming children from their parents off the coast. It has also isolated pets from their owners in the water, prompting wildlife experts to urge the public to avoid the dolphin at all costs. 1Wildlife experts say a dolphin off North Padre Island, Texas, should be avoided 'at all costs'Credit: NOAA Biologists report that aggressive behavior by the dolphin has increased as of late because of repeated interaction with humans. "The situation for a habituated dolphin off North Padre Island, Texas is dire, threatening both human safety and the animal’s life," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote in a Thursday news release. "For more than a year, biologists, law enforcement, and residents of the area have discouraged people from feeding, swimming, or interacting with the dolphin. A carjacker allegedly targeted an 81 year-old woman as she fed the homeless in a supermarket, then dragged her with her car when she tried to stop him.  Nina Steinman, of Redlands in California, was handing out food to the homeless at Stater Bros Markets on E Colton Avenue around 3.30pm on Monday - something she had been doing since January While she was performing the charitable act, a carjacker, who police say is Carlos Sanchez Jr., 24, 'forcefully took the keys from her and got into the driver's seat.'  The market was the last stop she had to make as she pulled in to hand three men food and homemade iced tea when Sanchez reportedly approached her car.  'I said I don't have anymore food, it's all gone, but I can give you some iced tea,' she told KTLA.  Steinman says she attempted to stop Sanchez by holding onto the driver's side door handle, but the suspect quickly back up the vehicle with the trunk still open, pulling Steinman several feet across the ground.  'Let me tell you, I’m...

Many D.C. politicians are—to paraphrase Winston Churchill—riddles wrapped in mysteries inside an enigma. Not so with Lauren Boebert. She’s twaddle wrapped in bacon inside an Arby’s. The congresswoman tends to wear her emotions on her sleeve, along with about 6 pounds of arrogance—apparently garnered from giving birth to offspring in weird, unsanitary places. If voters in Colorado’s 3rd District, which Boebert somehow represents, still don’t know enough about the freshman congresswoman to reject her then we need to do something drastic, because her sins are legion. (She’s a horrible boss to her embittered employees, for one thing.) With that in mind, the same rakish rapscallions who just successfully Moskva’d North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s thankfully brief congressional tenure are now taking aim at Boebert’s weak-ass claim to her seat. Insider:The group that posted a viral sexually explicit video of a nude Rep. Madison Cawthorn in bed with another man is now focusing on Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado for its next takedown, Insider has learned.'I think we're going to go after Lauren Boebert in Colorado in a similar way,'...
SEVEN in 10 maternity units are failing to meet crucial NHS safety targets, a damning report reveals. Hospitals were ordered to get mum and baby units up to scratch after 2020’s Ockenden review of hundreds of needless deaths due to poor care. 1NHS maternity services in England have been hit by scandal and warned to improve safety urgently (stock image)Credit: Getty But NHS bosses admit that only 37 out of 123 NHS hospital trusts – 30 per cent – are compliant with all 12 priorities laid out by top midwife Donna Ockenden. Sara Ledger, of campaign charity Baby Lifeline, said: “This slow speed of change is not fair on families and not fair on the professionals looking after them.  “The actions set out by the report are immediate and essential and everything needs to be done to make them happen at pace.” A report by England’s chief nursing officer, Ruth May, this week said three quarters of hospitals passed at least 10 out of 12 safety checks. (CNN)TikTok posts about actor Johnny Depp's defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, have turned a stay-at-home mom based in Scotland into an accidental influencer. Or, perhaps more aptly, a DeppTok influencer. Sophie Doggett, whose TikTok was previously populated by videos on everyday things such as herself or her pets, posted to her TikTok account on April 25 a clip of Heard's lawyer asking a question of a witness and then immediately objecting to the response. It is one of many moments in the trial that has been seized upon by people like Doggett, as clips of testimony and references to the case have pervaded TikTok in a way that no trial has before. That's partly because the proceeding, set to resume Monday, is being livestreamed during the age of TikTok, and also because of the high-profile celebrities the case involves.Doggett, who paired the clip to playful music, said she gained 30,000 followers seemingly overnight from the post which has, to date, been viewed more than 5 million times. Asked about her follower count before the viral post, she...
PARIS (AP) — Eighth-ranked Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the upcoming French Open as he continues his recovery from surgery on his right hand. The Italian announced in late March that he was having minor surgery. He wrote on Saturday on Instagram that he’s making good progress but not quite ready to return yet. “My hand is feeling great and I am working hard to build up my match fitness,” he wrote. “My team and I have made the decision that going straight back into 5 set matches on clay at Roland Garros would not be sensible, therefore I will delay my comeback to compete in the full grass season.” The French Open starts on May 22. Berrettini reached the quarterfinals last year at Roland Garros, losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in four sets. He then lost to Djokovic in four sets in the Wimbledon final. ___ More AP Tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. THIS is the dramatic moment a Ukrainian drone strike wiped out Russian targets on Snake Island. Ukraine released a video today of an alleged military drone hit on Kremlin landing ship supplying a TOR anti-aircraft missile system to the island in the Black Sea. 2An aerial view shows an explosion at Snake IslandCredit: Reuters 2This satellite image taken by Planet Labs shows thick black smoke rising after an alleged Ukrainian drone strikeCredit: AP The aerial footage appears to show the destruction of a large Serna-type landing craft in an air strike. In the video, a drone appears to be locking onto a target before unleashing its powerful cargo on the unsuspecting Russians. Thick black smoke was seen rising overhead in satellite photos in the aftermath of the strike. Ukrainian official Anton Gerashchenko said: “Enemy units remaining on Snake Island remain without air cover and will be destroyed and burned out like cockroaches or locusts." Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment a pair of Russian tanks suffered a direct hit from bombs stealthily dropped from a Ukrainian drone. Expertly flown by an operator believed to be from Ukraine's 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion, the drone swooped above two Russian infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) at an estimated height of around 400ft, before letting loose its payload. Five seconds later, the anti-armour grenades detonated and engulfed the IFVs in a pair of huge fireballs. Ukraine's armed forces have used drones to great effect amid the Russian invasion, expertly conducting small-scale airstrikes and using drone-mounted cameras to analyse Russian troop movements to prepare ambushes. It is unclear where the drone strike took place, though Radio Liberty reported in February that the 503rd Naval Infantry Battalion was deployed in the Donbas region of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, where fighting has intensified amid a major Russian offensive. It comes as the Land Forces of Ukraine today reported an estimated 23,000 Russian soldiers have been killed thus far in just nine weeks of war. A Russian armoured vehicle is seen centre seconds...
Russian state media went after CNN’s chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward for reporting on the devastation from the invasion of Ukraine. BBC journalist Francis Scarr followed up his reporting on the Russians’ laughable false-flag anti-Nazi operation by tracking the latest broadcast from Russian TV presenter, Olga Skabeyeva. Skabeyeva used her program to liken the situation in Ukraine to the U.S.’ pullout from Afghanistan — as Scarr provided subtitles of her saying “Washington abandoned its local allies who then had to cling onto the chassis of American transport aircraft.” “Back then, CNN propagandist Clarissa Ward managed to get out of Kabul,” Skabeyeva continued. “Right now, Clarissa’s in the zone of our special operation and has already managed to come under some shelling. It’s not the best sign for Washington’s allies in Kyiv.” Skabeyeva’s swipes were directed at Ward’s latest news package where her team followed Ukrainian paramedics who were attending to wounded citizens around Kharkiv. Ward’s group had to take cover when the Russians shelled the area again, and the outing marks the latest in a series of shocking reports Ward...
A DAY after Ralf Rangnick announced an influx of up to ten new players could be needed in Manchester United’s rebuild, the club’s top two scouts were sacked.
