A restaurant owner from Anne Arundel County has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing an Army veteran while he was driving under the influence, the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's office said on Tuesday, April 19.  Guarav “Sonny” Rawal, owner of Champs Pizza in Glen Burnie, was intoxicated, using his phone and excessively speeding when he slammed into the back of Anthony Jean-Louis' car last year.  The impact caused Jean-Louis to lose control, overturn and crash into a nearby guardrail, killing him on impact. Jean-Louis served in the US Army from 2001 to 2016, according to his obituary.  “Mr. Jean-Louis was senselessly killed by an out of control driver and his family has suffered from this unimaginable event," said State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess. "The most appropriate sentence for this defendant is his removal from our community to protect others."   Police responded to the crash near the southbound side of Route 10 in Glen Bernie on February 8, 2021, the office reports. Upon arrival, officers saw that Jean-Louis' Jeep had "extensive rear end damage" and Rawal's black Mercedes-Benz had "extensive front end damage,"...

Fox News’ Bill Hemmer questioned if “cancel culture has been canceled” while discussing Louis C.K.’s win at the 2022 Grammy Awards. “Louis CK secures a win at the Grammys, his first in years after he was cut off from comedy over sexual misconduct,” Hemmer said. “Jimmy Failla to tell us if cancel culture has been canceled!” Failla later joined Hemmer and Dana Perino on America’s Newsroom to analyze the win, suggesting that the public has now issued “sentencing guidelines” for disgraced public figures. “Everybody dismisses is us when we say this. When we say to entertainers, ‘Stay in your lane,’ we aren’t trying to silence them, we aren’t trying to marginalize their views,” Failla said to Hemmer and Perino on Monday. “We’re telling them they can help the country more by giving us a common culture that brings us together.” Perino went on to note that the public “tried to cancel” Moran Wallen when he was caught on video using the N-word, but that they couldn’t because “the fans love him.” She then pointed to C.K., who won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album, arguing that...
Louis C.K. won a Grammy for best comedy album on Sunday, his first nomination since being accused of sexual misconduct in 2017 by multiple women. He won the award for 'Sincerely, Louis C.K.,' his first post-scandal comedy special.  C.K., however, was conspicuously absent from the festivities, with host LaVar Burton forced to accept the award in his absence - an awkward scene caught on the award show's broadcast.  The odd moment added to an already beleaguered Grammys, which had already seen Kanye banned from performing, a boycott from The Weeknd and Drake withdrawing his nominations. In 2017, a New York Times report uncovered troublesome and long-simmering rumors about Louis C.K.'s behavior - with at least five women sharing stories of sexual misconduct by the previously celebrated comedian. Among them were comedians Dana Min Goodman, Julia Wolov, Abby Schachner, Rebecca Corry and an anonymous fifth source, who told the Times that the comedian had masturbated in front of them without their consent.  C.K. eventually responded with a statement in which he admitted the allegations were true.   Scroll down for video  Host LaVar Burton was...
Just a week after Will Smith's infamous Oscars meltdown, multiple controversies surrounding the Grammys mean that the music industry's top awards show is another veritable powder keg set to blow. The Grammys, set for Sunday night in Las Vegas with Trevor Noah hosting, will have to navigate a delicate situation with Kanye West, who was banned from performing but is expected to attend with five nominations on the line. Marilyn Manson is also up for an award after he was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, and comedian Louis CK is likewise nominated as he makes his comeback from harassment allegations several years ago. And in stinging snubs, the Weeknd is still boycotting the awards and Drake said he wanted no part in competing for a Grammy, withdrawing his two nominations.  The timing of the Grammys -- exactly one week after Will Smith stunned the world by slapping Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars -- adds an extra layer of unpredictability to what is already usually one of the more bizarre nights on the awards circuit.  Kanye West was...

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's editorial board is weighing in on the latest scandal involving former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens (R), who resigned from his leadership post back in 2018 amid sexual misconduct allegations and multiple campaign finance violations. This time around, the former disgraced governor is at the center of domestic violence claims as a result of allegations from his own ex-wife, Sheena Greitens. The newspaper notes that on Monday, March 21, court documents allege that her ex-husband "was physically violent toward her and their children and engaged in such 'unstable and coercive behavior' that she and others around him limited his access to firearms." Now, amid Greitens' latest Senate bid, the St. Louis-based newspaper is calling on the Republican Party to see him for who he really is. The editorial board explained why the latest allegations are actually worse than the initial scandal he faced. "The new allegations are in some ways even more disturbing than those voiced by Greitens’ former mistress during his 2018 impeachment hearings," the editorial board. "Among Sheena Greitens’ many claims is that...

In November 2018, the Department of Justice announced that four St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers had been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with an assault on undercover Black St. Louis police detective Luther Hall. The assault on Hall, a 22-year veteran of the force, took place during Black Lives Matter protests on Sept. 17, 2017. Officers Dustin Boone, Bailey Colletta, Randy Hays, and Christopher Myers were charged with four counts of “willfully violating” Hall’s constitutional rights. Not only did the four officers brutalize Hall, who suffered long-term injuries, but text messages preceding the protests reportedly showed the four officers being enthusiastic about the prospect of violating protesters’ civil rights. The officers also reportedly worked diligently to obstruct justice after they realized that Hall was a law enforcement officer, including destroying his phone.  In September of 2019, Hall filed a civil rights lawsuit against the officers as well as Mayor Lyda Krewson, Lt. Col. Lawrence O’Toole, and recently promoted Sgt. Joseph Marcantano. Hall’s lawsuit not only alleged that Krewson made a glib remark about Hall’s “cute face” being damaged by police, but that Marcantano—although he was involved in...
