Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for Warner Bros. Discovery CNN will not be more “centrist” amid its massive changes under the corporate umbrella of Warner Bros. Discovery, CEO Chris Licht insisted. In an interview with the Financial Times, Licht opened up about the changes to come to the network and revealed his own strategy for rebranding CNN, a brand struggling to find a new identity as Licht has been charged with revitalizing the network and cutting costs. “One of the biggest misconceptions about my vision is that I want to be vanilla, that I want to be centrist. That is bullshit,” Licht said. “You have to be compelling. You have to have edge. In many cases you take a side. Sometimes you just point out uncomfortable questions. But either way you don’t see it through a lens of left or right.” Since Licht took over CNN as CEO, numerous notable shifts have gone through, including the departure of Brian Stelter and the swift cancellation of the CNN+ streaming service. Licht replaced Jeff Zucker, and the Financial Times report shows there is still...

President Joe Biden on Thursday defended his controversial summer trip to Saudi Arabia as a journey that was 'not about oil' as his administration prepares options to counter the stunning production cut that OPEC+ has announced. The cut in production comes just three months after Biden fist-bumped Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, on a trip the kingdom used to its PR advantage after international condemnations for the murder of dissident Jamal Khashoggi. 'We are looking at alternatives. We haven't made up our minds yet,' Biden said as he left the White House for a trip to New York. He also defended his Saudi trip, insisting as he did at the time that his talk with the world's No. 2 oil producer was not about the topic. Biden flew there after a visit to Israel, and discussed the war in Yemen among other topics. by Michael McKenna   There has been a lot of talk during this election cycle about “voter enthusiasm;” which side has it, what are its causes, and what might it all mean for the final result. Much of it is propaganda that should be ignored, but there are some numbers and data that can help illuminate the terrain. All that attention is appropriate, given that each and every election depends entirely on who shows up to vote. Let’s start with the propaganda. Lots of attention has been focused on the Morning Consult’s time series on voter enthusiasm, which, at the moment, gives the Republicans a slight edge in voter enthusiasm, with 65% of the self-identified Republicans indicating that they are very excited about voting this year. The Democrats are trailing a bit, with only 62% of their folks saying that are excited about voting. If you don’t like those results, wait a minute or two. Morning Consult has been asking about voter enthusiasm for about 18 months now, and the answer has bounced around quite a bit. Way back...

According to a recent study, pregnant women are more likely to suffer the heartbreak of a miscarriage during the summer. Calling for 'medical guidance and public health messaging' to 'consider the potential effects of heat on the health of pregnant people and their babies', researchers behind the eight-year project tracked the pregnancies of 6,000 women in the U.S. Miscarriage rates peaked in June, July and August — the traditional summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, analysis by a research team led by Boston University showed.   The highest seasonal difference was logged in August, when miscarriage rates were 44 higher than in February.  The trend was strongest for miscarriages that occurred before eight weeks, when a foetus is still the size of a raspberry. According to a recent study, pregnant women are more likely to suffer the heartbreak of a miscarriage during the summer (stock image) Experts believe extreme heat or lifestyle factors during warmer weather could be to blame — but they said further research is needed. When it comes to eating healthily, it seems there's a new piece of advice every week. Take eggs. Once demonised for being high in cholesterol, they gained hero status when protein-rich diets became the holy grail for weight loss. No wonder we're so confused. But a new study could be the definitive guide that we've all been looking for. Researchers from the U.S. have created the Food Compass, which, they say, is the most comprehensive system ever devised to assess the nutrition content of what we eat. The team in Boston spent three years looking at more than 8,000 foods and drinks, from melon to a McDonald's, and used cutting-edge science to rank them according to 54 different attributes. They gave each food a score between 1 and 100 — the higher the score, the healthier the food. Foods scoring between 100 and 70 are encouraged, those between 69 and 31 should be eaten only in moderation, while anything under 30 is bad news. THOUGH they're marked on the exterior with 'THROW AWAY – DO NOT EAT,' silica gel packets can be a handy tool to have on hand for a number of home hacks. "The jewelry-like silica gel beads are a desiccant," the experts explained, "a category of materials used to keep products dry by attracting water to their surface." Because the gel beads adsorb water (attract it to the surface), but don't absorb it, you can use them to draw moisture away from other materials without creating a mess of waterlogged baggies. For example, you can store your birth certificates, passports, and other important documents with silica gel...

From technology to access to  all the gadgets imaginable to make life run smoother, there's so many advantages to living in the modern world, but sometimes it's easy to wonder if things have gone a little too far.  Bored Panda has rounded up a selection of images from around the world shared by the Humans of Capitalism Instagram account, which aims to expose the dystopian side of the world we live in.  They've been snapped by people who saw something strange and it made them question the reality we're living in, and even their faith in humanity.  For instance, one motorist spotted a group of men stopping to take a selfie at the scene of a car smash, while elsewhere a woman posed to snap a picture while standing on the roof of a sinking car, proving that for some there's nothing more important than social media likes.  In a similar vein, others despaired over a woman who paused to take a seductive picture while sprawled over a crucifix, while someone else's heart sank at the sight of a bulletproof...
Mario Tama/Getty Images President Joe Biden responded on Sunday to the bipartisan deal on a set of gun safety measures reached by 20 senators. Biden said the bill “does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction.” The bipartisan proposal, led by Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Krysten Sinema (D-AZ), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and  John Cornyn (R-TX), would enhance background checks for people under 21 and increase funding for mental health and school safety. In his statement, Biden thanked the senators who reached the agreement: I want to thank Senator Chris Murphy and the members of his bipartisan group—especially Senators Cornyn, Sinema, and Tillis—for their tireless work to produce this proposal. Obviously, it does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction, and would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades. With bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delay, and no reason why it should not quickly move through the Senate and the House. Each day that passes, more children are killed in this...
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday claimed the Biden administration has exhausted efforts to reduce energy costs for American citizens. Gas soared to a tenth day consecutive record high of $4.91 per gallon on Tuesday. Prices have more than doubled since former President Donald Trump left office. Speaking at the Senate Finance Committee, Yellen said “the administration has done everything that they can” to reduce energy prices. Yellen did not mention Biden’s war on American energy, which includes driving up private and public financing costs of oil drilling, halting drilling on public lands, and canceling the Keystone pipeline. Instead, Yellen claimed the energy price shocks were due to the coronavirus and the war in Ukraine. “We currently face macroeconomic challenges, including unacceptable levels of inflation as well as the headwinds associated with the disruptions caused by the pandemic’s effect on supply chains, and the effects of supply side disturbances to oil and food markets resulting from Russia’s war in Ukraine,” Yellen claimed. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen concedes Biden has no plan to lower gas prices: "the administration has done everything that they can." Gas prices have more than DOUBLED since...

The juror began his TikTok video by saying he wanted to remain anonymous. When someone questioned why they should believe him, he replied: 'The world is a better place with curiosity and being speculative. Being speculative about information is one of the best things about science! Just being a skeptic in general, and questioning everything has led to a lot of scientific and personal truths.' He then proceeded to explain their deliberations, describing Heard as a poor witness and saying they found Depp far more credible. 'What would you say was the moment that you were like NOPE.. if she's lying about this she's lying about everything?' asked one TikTok user. He replied: 'I would say the donation/ pledge to charity.' Reishi mushroom is all over the health world. Most likely, you’ve seen it stamped across a tin of mysterious superfood powder in the health aisle or listed as an ingredient in your new tincture or elixir. So, what’s up with reishi mushroom, and why is it so friggin’ popular? Well, the reishi mushroom is … well … a mushroom, but it happens to be one that’s got quite a long lineage. Reishi mushroom has been noted in ancient and alternative medicines thousands of years old. This fungi has some powerful health benefits and also happens to be high in those body-loving antioxidants. Let’s take a deep dive into this wonderful ingredient! What is Reishi Mushroom? tassilo111/Pixabay Alright, reishi mushroom is a mushroom, but where does it come from, and how are you supposed to consume it? Blocked blood vessels cause millions of heart attacks and strokes around the world every year. However, doctors are now clogging blood vessels deliberately as a way to treat conditions as diverse as arthritic knees and prostate trouble. The procedure — arterial embolisation — involves completely shutting off blood supply to parts of the body by injecting materials to act as a dam. Embolisation was first developed in 1970, when an American doctor called Charles Dotter used a clot from a patient's blood to block an artery in his stomach to halt life-threatening gastric bleeding. Since then, the method has evolved to use materials such as tiny plastic beads or metal coils to form a permanent blockage to shut off blood flow. Its big appeal is that it can often be performed under local anaesthetic and has relatively few side-effects — it also allows access to parts of the body that surgeons sometimes cannot reach. Is Prince Andrew really so cretinous and conniving that he would allow his mother to risk her impeccable reputation to aid his delusional fantasies of a comeback? Sadly, the answer is, absolutely, without any doubt. Yesterday, in front of the world's media, the disgraced Duke of York used a frail 95-year-old to return to the public stage where he is convinced he belongs – and I wasn't even slightly surprised. After all, in the days after his father Prince Philip's death a year ago, I revealed how he immediately began plotting to use the tragedy to take the spotlight and then did appear in front of the TV cameras, ignoring the wishes of his relatives and royal courtiers. It takes a uniquely twisted individual to use the bereavement of a parent to plot a resurgence. Sadly, the answer is, absolutely, without any doubt. Pictured: The Duke of York walks The Queen into Westminster...
Although Prince Philip embodied traditional beliefs and values, in many ways he was also a man ahead of his time.  Among his thought-provoking and sometimes radical views were the absolute necessity of protecting the environment and the unique importance of the individual spirit if we want to tackle social ills. A Question Of Balance, from which we take these extracts ahead of Tuesday’s memorial service for him, was one of many books setting out his wide-ranging views.  Even though it was written 40 years ago, the Prince’s opinions still have a powerful resonance today.  I make no claim to being a philosopher, but every now and again I am invited to address an audience on any subject of my choosing. All the arguments have to be dredged up from personal experience and study, and this forces me to reflect and to order my thoughts. Every philosophical discussion presents arguments for and against, which have to be weighed. This is particularly so at a time when people seem only too ready to take their point of view to extremes. I believe...
President Joe Biden pivoted from high gas prices and the Russian invasion of the Ukraine on Tuesday to a more personal issue - veterans' health care. Biden was in Fort Worth, Texas, to meet with veterans and their caregivers and push for more help for members of the military who face health problems after exposure to burn pits.  'We don't know enough yet about burn pits and the connection between these diseases that our veterans are suffering,' the president said but noted he was committed to pushing for more funding for the issue.  It's a personal issue for Biden, whose son Beau died of brain cancer in 2015. Biden has said he believes there could be a connection to the burn pits Beau was stationed near during his time in Iraq and his illiness. 'We don't know for sure if a burn pit was the cause of his brain cancer, or the diseases of so many of our troops,' Biden said in his speech. 'But I'm committed to finding out everything we can.' 'But we only have one truly sacred...
The temperature in Mariupol will drop below freezing once again tonight. And the residents of the besieged Ukrainian port will have to endure this in their makeshift underground shelters without heating, without electricity and without water, as the Russians have cut off supplies. President Biden's chief medical adviser erupted at the Republican lawmaker early in the hearing for attacking him 'without a shred of evidence' and blaming him for threats to him and his family's safety.   He also blamed Paul 'distorting' his messages for a recently thwarted plot to kill Fauci and numerous other Washington, DC officials and political figures.  'What happens when he gets out and accuses me of things that are completely untrue, is that all of a sudden that kindles the crazies out there, and I have life -- threats upon my life, harassments of my family, and my children? Well, I've seen phone calls, because people are lying about me,' a visibly angered Fauci said.  He and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Wallensky are testifying on the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic toward the end of its second year in front of the Senate panel. Paul, among Fauci's most vocal critics,...

Brown added that not everything needs to have a political motivation and that the agenda of seeing racism in everything is garbage. "Everything ain’t political, OK?" he continued. "A bunch of people are getting paid to push this racist s**t. That’s all it is.” He added, "These motherf***ers ain't got no lane they're in — they really don't got nothing to say. The only thing they get paid off of is talking about how racist it is. Them motherf***ers got good cars, good houses, good everything telling you how bad it is. Motherf***er, it don't look bad. You're driving a Benz, you're goddamn flying all over the world, you have speaking engagements, you motherf***ers got black ties and security and s**t. How you motherf***ers so bad off?" Them motherf***ers got a black SUV. Them motherf***ers riding in style. ... So how in the f*** is...
Succession has told us just enough about Logan Roy’s history to know that however he’s abused his kids, it’s no worse than what he endured as a child. We know that he and his brother, Ewan, grew up in the care of their uncle, Noah. Logan still blames himself for the death of their sister, Rose—and whatever happened to him and Ewan afterward, it seared a lot of angry, red scars into his back. Logan’s scars appear in Season 1’s “Austerlitz,” which finds the Roys reunited at oldest son and certified black sheep Connor’s ranch. (The reason for the gathering? An interview-slash-photo opp designed to boost Waystar’s stock with a little publicized family therapy.) After a less than productive discussion with three rightfully frustrated children and a freshly relapsed Kendall, we observe Logan swimming laps in the pool. Marcia wraps him in a towel as he emerges—covering the keloids that cut across his back like lashes from a whip. I thought of that moment at the end of this week’s episode, “Chiantishire,” as Kendall floated face-down in an infinity pool....
A 20-year-old who had COVID-19 said it's left her with a rare condition that makes food taste like 'garbage and sewage' - almost a year after she first tested positive for the virus. Natalia Cano, from Mendham, New Jersey, caught coronavirus in January 2021 while she was working in a food store, and she said it completely changed her sense of taste and smell. A few weeks after she recovered, she noticed that things that used to taste good started to taste like 'garbage,' 'gasoline,' or 'mold' - a condition called parosmia.  Food became so disgusting to Natalia, that she said she developed an eating disorder and would throw up any time she tried to eat.  Now, more than 10 months after recovering from the illness, she said she is still suffering from the condition, and she doesn't know if it's ever going to get better.   She broke down in tears as she opened up about it on TikTok, and the video quickly went viral - gaining millions of views in a matter of days.  A 20-year-old who had COVID-19...

Meanwhile, three in four people who claim to be easy to shop for during the holidays said their secret is simply being “easy to shop for.” Sixty-eight percent believe the thought behind the gift counts more than the gift itself. No matter the case, respondents said the most universally enjoyed gifts are chocolate (58 percent), holiday gift baskets (50 percent) and...

With a healthy roster, the Golden State Warriors have championship aspirations this season, but their goals are being drastically hampered by Andrew Wiggins’ decision to skip the vaccine. Despite the ramifications, team leader Draymond Green won’t push Wiggins to get jabbed. “That would be like Andrew, who everyone knows previously just had a kid maybe five months ago or so now, that would be like me telling him, ‘Yo, your wife is going into labor. How dare you leave this team and not go tend to your wife?'” Green told reporters Thursday. Although remaining unvaccinated can be harmful to others, Green’s overall point is that he still considers the Covid jab decision to be a personal matter. The NBA cannot mandate the vaccine without acceptance from the Players Association, which is one of the wealthiest and most powerful unions in the country. Even players who did get vaccinated, such as Green, do not want to step on their teammates or union for skipping the jab. “We’re dealing with something that to me feels like has turned into a political...
In the weeks before D-Day – June 6, 1944 – when more than 150,000 Allied troops stormed Normandy’s beaches, the War Cabinet had been locked in talks over a terrifying new threat. The fear – unfounded, as it turned out – was that the Nazis were preparing to unleash biological bombs containing powdered botulinum toxin on the invading armies. This micro-fine dust, once it enters the body through the eyes, nose or throat, travels deep into the nerves and muscles. The paralysis it causes starts at the head and moves down the body, affecting the limbs and, eventually, the lungs. Victims at first suffer fatigue and vertigo. Grotesque drooping of the face and slurred speech follow. The eyes may roll uncontrollably. Finally, breathing becomes laboured and, without mechanical ventilation, suffocation is inevitable. It is a horrible way to die – and an offshore wind could have carried it out to the thousands of landing craft, causing devastation well beyond the 4,400 confirmed dead that day. Today, as hard as it might be to believe, that biological weapon of war is...
The display has a 120 mHz refresh rate, which provides less visual fatigue and that the experience when sliding your finger across the panel is maximum, with an unusual fluidity. Its main competitor, Apple, has to take note in this regard, although it is expected that the iPhone 13 already has a screen of these characteristics. Speaking of devices of more than € 1000, it is already non-negotiable. If there is one thing that stands out about this device, it is that a second screen has been incorporated. It is located on the outside, and has a 1.9 inch size. The idea of the engineers and the Samsung development team has been excellent, this screen shows the time in addition to the notifications. Something that will help you not have to unfold the screen so often, helping to preserve its integrity. As for the battery, a 3300 mA battery. It has been a challenge and it is not surprising that this figure is not as high as that of other devices of the same brand. Do not forget, it is...
08/14/2021 On at 18:39 CEST The Spanish Maverick Viñales has been left out of the Austrian GP after the harsh sanction imposed by Yamaha. The Japanese brand assured that Maverick Viñales had carried out “an irregular operation on his motorcycle that could have damaged the engine and posed a risk.” Viñales has continued to be present at the Austrian Grand Prix, watching the training sessions from off the track, and during qualifying Saturday he gave Sky an interview to talk about what happened. The Spanish pilot was sincere, for the first time, and acknowledged being “sad, very sad, because it is a very strange situation, that is the clearest fact and for me it is difficult to be in this situation, although I feel fortunate to have people around me who at the moment make me go through this situation better “. The Yamaha had already exploded against his team in the German Grand Prix where he ended with the worst result of his life, causing a subsequent break between the Japanese...
Californians were supposed to be enjoying a carefree, vaccinated summer season before it was marred by the delta variant and catastrophic wildfires. And now there is one more really important thing you need to start focusing on: a consequential election. What once seemed like a distant bid by Republicans to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom is now a real possibility, and every registered voter in California will have the opportunity to help decide whether the sitting governor stays or goes in the coming weeks. But in a recall election, it could end up that just a tiny fraction of the state’s roughly 40 million residents pick the next governor of the most populous state in the country, unless voters show up. In 2003, when California booted Gov. Gray Davis, only around 9 million of the state’s 15 million voters participated, and just 4.2 million picked his replacement — and this time, no world-famous actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger are on the ballot. But don’t worry if you haven’t been paying careful attention to how this all works. We’ve got you covered. Here’s...
