Gloria Estefan appeared to take a light-hearted jab at Jennifer Lopez on Tuesday night while confirming that she turned down a chance to appear with her at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show. The 64-year-old Cuban–American singer suggested on Watch What Happens Live that J.Lo, 52, might have been upset if she joined the already crowded group of performers, which included Shakira as a co-headliner and guest appearances from Bad Bunny, J. Balvin and even Lopez's child Emme. Host Andy Cohen brought up the Super Bowl performance in response to the Lopez's complaints about being forced to share the stage with Shakira in her new Netflix documentary Halftime. No thanks: Gloria Estefan, 64, confirmed Tuesday on Watch What Happens Live that she turned down an offer to sing at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show, which Jennifer Lopez headlined with Shakira Estefan confirmed that she had been approached about joining the Latin music–themed show, but she turned down Super Bowl organizers because it was already overstuffed. Kevin Winter/Getty Images Jennifer Lopez was not happy to share the Super Bowl stage with Shakira during the 2022 halftime show. “We have six fucking minutes. We have 30 seconds of a song, and if we take a minute, that’s it, we’ve got five left. But there’s got to be certain songs that we sing, though. We have to have our singing moments,” Lopez said in her new Netflix film Halftime. “It’s not going to be a dance fucking revue. We have to sing our message.” Lopez was, of course, referring to her and Shakira’s joint halftime show performance for the Super Bowl LIV, which she was discussing with Shakira in the room. “This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl. It was the worst idea in the world,” she continued. “They said 12 minutes. I got kind of a good confirmation that we could have an extra minute or two, so now we’re at, like, 13, 14 minutes. I think, Shakira, what we should have is you should have half the time...
WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S.-sponsored show of alliance with Japan and South Korea stumbled Wednesday when American diplomats couldn’t convince their Asian allies to share a news conference stage. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was due to hold the press conference at the State Department with her counterparts, Choi Jong Kun of South Korea and Mori Takeo of Japan. Instead, Sherman sat at a table alone, taking question from reporters from those countries. In explanation, she cited “some bilateral differences” between those two Asian allies of the U.S. “that are continuing to be resolved, unrelated to today’s meeting.” Neighbors Japan and South Korea have no shortage of disputes — the Wikipedia entry on just that runs to 122 footnotes — on Japan’s wartime occupation of Korea and other historical matters, Japan’s handling of radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, trade conflicts and other matters. The United States has been working to build multiparty alliances in the Indo-Pacific as a deterrence to China’s own territorial claims there. The canceled three-party press conference appeared an unusual — and unusually public...

LAWRENCE (CBS) — Medal of Honor recipients flew on Wednesday to Lawrence High School, just one of several stops to speak with and hopefully inspire young minds. The Medal of Honor recipients flew in on a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter. With them, the nation’s highest and most rare military decoration, only bestowed upon the bravest heroes. READ MORE: Person Killed After Touching Live Wire In Northboro The two recipients took the stage in the Performing Arts Center of Lawrence High School, telling their stories of both sacrifice and profound pride in their service. Their hope was to impact even a single student to think twice about what an honor it is to serve, and appreciate the ones who already have. “Ultimately, I hope it sparks an interest to go back and look at all the people that served before me, before them, to make our country great. For every medal that was awarded, there’s five, 10, 15 other people who have done heroic actions that nobody’s going to ever hear about,” said Sergeant Major Matthew O. Williams, one of the...
Since Meghan first stepped into the royal limelight, Oprah Winfrey has determinedly set about wooing her, from doing yoga with Meghan’s mum Doria, to providing gifts, flattery and mentorship — not to mention a powerful plug for her brand of oat-milk lattes on Instagram. But while these acts of courtship show a clear link between Oprah and Meghan, what has been less obvious is the extraordinary way in which so many of Meghan’s friends and staffers are drawn from the Orbit of Oprah, known as the Queen of All Media. Prince Harry and Meghan have drawn a father figure, charity executive, a PR and several celebrity mentors from Oprah’s circle of friends. On a more practical level, friends of Oprah, 67, have loaned them two mega-mansions. Just coincidence? Maybe. But the links are numerous and deep. Since Meghan first stepped into the royal limelight, Oprah Winfrey (pictured arriving at Harry and Meghan's 2018 wedding) has determinedly set about wooing her For instance, Meghan’s pet author who wrote the couple’s biography Finding Freedom is a royal correspondent on Oprah’s eponymous...
A sheriff in Michigan has proposed that the alleged militiamen charged with plotting to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer may have been planning to make a legal citizen's arrest. Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf in May took the stage at an anti-lockdown rally with William Null, who with his twin brother Michael Null is among the 13 charged in the kidnapping plot. 'It's just a charge, and they say a 'plot to kidnap' and you got to remember that. Are they trying to kidnap?' Leaf told WXMI-TV on Thursday. 'Because a lot of people are angry with the governor, and they want her arrested. So are they trying to arrest or was it a kidnap attempt? Because you can still in Michigan if it's a felony, make a felony arrest,' Leaf said.  Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf has proposed that the alleged militiamen charged with plotting to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer may have been planning to make a legal citizen's arrest William Null (left) and his twin brother Michael Null (right) are among the 13 charged in the plot ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans proceeded with the third night of their national convention, but many Americans — particularly those in the path of Hurricane Laura — were focused on more immediate concerns. Here are some key takeaways: CRISES DRAIN CONVENTION ATTENTION A political convention is the most scripted, tightly controllable of events, especially when it is mostly virtual and much of it is prerecorded. That is, until events beyond the control of convention planners make the political ritual seem almost inconsequential. As Republicans gathered for the third day of a convention to renominate President Donald Trump, a massive hurricane was taking aim at the Gulf Coast, wildfires continued to scorch California and the National Guard was being deployed to a city in the battleground state of Wisconsin after a white police officer shot a Black man. And all the while a deadly pandemic continued to claim the lives of nearly 1,000 Americans a day. In true Trump style, though, campaign officials said the show must go on. Officials said the president had been regularly briefed and may visit the Gulf...
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot apparently backed out of a virtual conference at the last minute to avoid being on stage with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Lightfoot cited a scheduling conflict when she announced that she would not be attending a roundtable discussion on Wednesday with Crain’s Chicago Business. Sources, however, told the Chicago Tribune that she was concerned about appearing next to Frey, who has been widely criticized after George Floyd, a black man, died in Minneapolis police custody in late May. The event had been touted as a discussion between former Obama adviser David Axelrod and the "mayors of two Midwest cities" about COVID-19 and the recent wave of civil unrest. Lightfoot did not want to discuss those issues with Frey during the virtual event despite both cities battling unrest and issues within their police departments. Frey, a Democrat, has been blasted by activists for his opposition to the defunding of the Minneapolis Police Department. He was chased out of a Black Lives Matter event earlier this year after he refused to say he supported defunding the police. Lightfoot...
