The soccer star, who has been battling colon cancer since last year, was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday for a reassessment of his chemotherapy treatment, according to the hospital. A local newspaper reported Saturday that his chemotherapy had been suspended and he was receiving end-of-life care, setting off alarm bells across the soccer world. But in an Instagram post Saturday, amid the World Cup fervor, Pelé appeared to refute the latter claim, saying he wanted to “keep everyone calm.” “I’m strong, very hopeful, and following my treatment as usual,” he wrote. “I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you, coming all over the world, keeps me full of energy.” The hospital also published a statement Saturday, saying the soccer player was “still undergoing treatment and his health condition remains stable.” “He is responding well to care for a respiratory infection, and his condition has not changed in the last...

Getty Mitchell Robinson of the New York Knicks looks on during the second half against the Philadelphia 76ers. After letting up 145 points in a loss in front of their home crowd just five games prior, the New York Knicks enacted revenge against Oklahoma City Monday night by putting on a two-way clinic and returning the favor by besting the Thunder at the Paycom Center by a final score of 129-119. While many members of the Knickerbockers made their presence felt in the contest, big man Mitchell Robinson was arguably the player most fans were found paying close attention to, especially after leaving the game early in the third period after apparently re-aggravating the right knee injury that had him sidelined for eight consecutive games. Despite the fears and concerns that came as a result of his unceremonious exit, when asked by a reporter about Robinson’s knee during a post-game media session head coach Tom Thibodeau gave a major update on the situation, suggesting that it likely won’t lead to any sort of setbacks in his recovery. “Just...
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, bringing with it opportunities for festivities with family and friends. But this year’s holiday happenings also risk attracting some unwelcome guests, as respiratory viruses and the coronavirus could find fertile ground to spread, especially in crowded indoor settings. “Our winter virus season is here early, especially for our kids. We are seeing stress on our clinics and hospitals that care for kids, especially infants and kids under 12,” Dr. Tomás Aragón, California’s public health director and health officer, said recently. “It’s important to remember that kids get infected from other kids and adults, so everyone needs to do their part.” While it’s impossible to eliminate the risk of catching COVID-19, the flu or RSV, health experts say there are several now-familiar steps that can be taken to boost protection. “I know that I continue to look forward to this holiday and gathering with my mom and siblings and extended family and friends,” California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said. “And then I also think about, for the sake of...
California officials are urging preventive measures to thwart the spread of respiratory illnesses and alleviate a health system already contending with the triple threat of COVID-19, influenza and RSV. For weeks, public health leaders across the most-populous state have sounded the alarm about the challenges posed by simultaneous circulation of the three viruses. With Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season around the corner, ways in which residents address these health challenges can help chart the state’s course through the next few months, officials say. “We are dealing with three threats at once,” California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said this week. “In every category that we track — whether it’s test positivity, case rate numbers, wastewater surveillance, clinical surveillance, hospitalizations — we’re seeing increases for RSV, flu and COVID.” California California child dies of flu and RSV as cases soar, hospitals threatened Flu season’s positivity rate in Los Angeles County is at 25%, up from 13% a week ago, as RSV and COVID are still in circulation. The coronavirus continues to play an outsized role in the mortality rate in Los Angeles County, new data from the Department of Public Health show. According to an analysis from the county health department, COVID-19 was the second-leading cause of death in the first six months of 2022, illustrating the outsized impact the pandemic has had on mortality rates despite widespread availability of vaccines and the arguably less-severe Omicron strain. By contrast, COVID-19 was the leading cause of death in the nation’s most populous county in the first six months of 2021, a span that includes the deadliest surge of the 2½-year pandemic. And for the comparable period in 2020, COVID-19 was the second leading cause of death, even though the coronavirus did not begin to spread widely until March. From January through June of this year, the COVID-19 mortality rate of 30.1 deaths for every 100,000 residents was second only to coronary heart disease, which had a rate of 47.5. Lagging behind was the death rate for diabetes, which was 15.5, and flu and pneumonia, which was 7.1. The...

Rapidly spreading viral infections have pushed pediatric hospitalizations and daily emergency room visits to record levels in Orange County, prompting officials to declare a health emergency. The county, like the rest of California, is facing a viral triple whammy: continued circulation of the coronavirus; seasonal rise of the flu; and heightened spread of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, a respiratory illness that can cause babies to struggle to breathe. County health officials warned over the weekend that elevated spread of respiratory illnesses, specifically RSV, was severely impacting capacity in the region’s pediatric hospitals. There’s also worry that the coronavirus — which has been in somewhat of a lull for weeks — could surge again this fall and winter, as has happened each of the past two years. California California sees increase in RSV, a respiratory illness that can be dangerous for babies RSV normally peaks in winter, but cases have increased in October as some California children’s hospitals are becoming overwhelmed. “While there isn’t a vaccine against RSV, we want O.C. residents to know there are many...

Players want to be out there. But we need to think about our long-term health. ‘I think we all know the difference between getting rocked and getting concussed. There is definitely a difference. I’ve had a few on the field and there’s a difference between getting nailed and going to the sideline, maybe your jaw or neck is hurting a little bit and actually having a concussion. Low-income Americans are roughly three times more likely to see a doctor if they are enrolled in Medicare, a study suggests. Researchers found that 14.7 per cent of poor 64-year-olds delayed seeking medical care while 15.5 percent avoided are altogether due to cost, while only 6.2 percent of Medicare enrollees delayed care and less than 6 per cent avoided it.  The federal healthcare program for roughly 63 million seniors is effective at removing some of the financial barriers to healthcare for seniors that people with private health insurance still face.  People with long-term disabilities as well as end stage renal disease patients are also eligible for Medicare coverage.   But there has been a push on Capitol Hill to widen that eligibility to include people 60-64  Proponents of the change argue that it would expand access to crucial preventive and life saving care to millions more people. CHILDHOOD vaccine rates are at their lowest for a decade, NHS figures show. Health chiefs warn historic diseases like measles, mumps and polio could bounce back in the UK. 1Children get most routine vaccinations before the age of five to protect them from serious diseasesCredit: Getty Britain now falls well short of the 95 per cent coverage needed for herd immunity from the deadly bugs. Dr Vanessa Saliba, from the UK Health Security Agency, said drops in jab coverage are “extremely worrying” and urged parents to bring their kids forward. Uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine dropped to 89.2 per cent last year – the lowest since 2011. For the six-in-one jab, which tackles polio and tetanus, coverage was the lowest since 2008 at 91.8 per cent. Cases of polio have already sprung up in London as the immunity rate falls. The number of children jabbed fell across 13 out of 14 vital immunisations offered on the NHS. Read more on vaccinesDEJA VU?
